Two Kerry men hanged for murder over 140 years ago, are being pardoned by the President this afternoon. Sylvester Poff and James Barrett were hanged in 1883 after being convicted of the murder of Thomas Browne at his farm in Dromulton, near Currow. The Castleisland District Heritage group campaigned for a posthumous pardon for the two men who they say were victims of a miscarriage of justice. As a result of the group’s campaign, the Department of Justice engaged Dr Niamh Howlin, an expert in 19th century trial law and an Associate Professor in the Sutherland School of Law, UCD, to carry out a review. Her review of the case found the convictions to be unsafe. Jerry spoke to Johnnie Roche, chair of Castleisland District Heritage, who is travelling to Dublin for the official pardon of Poff and Barrett at Áras an Uachtaráin.

Mein heutiger Gast kam 1993 als Alice Florence Clarissa in Frankfurt am Main zur Welt, die Mutter Deutsche, der Vater Ire. Die Familie lebte bald in New York, später in Oakville, Kanada. In the 1990s, artists such as Aphex Twin, Oval and Autechre made waves by taking electronic music to squelchy new places. Their music lurched from rhythmic to arrhythmic to ambient, often in the same song, punctuated with pops and squawks. As it turns out, artists had been making that music for millions of years. But, until recently, no one was listening. "You can find things in your own backyard that no one's paying attention to," says David Rothenberg on a warm December day behind Haldane High School in Cold Spring. The day before, a rainstorm had flooded parks, shut down roads and swollen the pond we were standing in front of. At our feet, a wireless speaker was broadcasting a concert that could have been recorded in the chill-out tent at the Glastonbury Festival, circa 1995. The music was coming from a microphone that resembled a hockey puck that Rothenberg had thrown into the water. Some of the rhythmic clicks were the sound of microscopic bubbles being released as plants photosynthesized sunlight into food. Some of the irregular pops were from insects. But the origins of about 90 percent of the sounds are a mystery, even to scientists. "It's humbling," says Rothenberg. "You can still go to the woods behind your house and hear things that no one can identify." Tracking down the music of the natural world isn't a recent hobby for Rothenberg, who lives in Philipstown. A jazz clarinetist, he has written several books that document his global travels to study the music of birds, bugs and whales. When the pandemic struck, Rothenberg's thoughts returned to an anthology he co-edited, The Book of Music & Nature. In one essay, David Dunn, a composer and sound artist, described recordings he had made of vernal ponds. "I have finally reconciled myself to the gut feeling that these sounds are an emergent property of the pond: something that speaks as a collective voice for a mind that is beyond my grasp," Dunn wrote. "Now when I see a pond, I think of the water's surface as a membrane enclosing something deep in thought." Intrigued, Rothenberg began tossing his microphones into ponds but heard nothing. The artist Zach Poff revealed the answer: Rothenberg was using mics designed to hear whales at a distance. Poff offered to build him a close-contact mic. What happened next is the subject of Rothenberg's book, Secret Sounds of Ponds, published this month. It is filled with links and QR codes that take readers to pond recordings and an online store to order underwater mics for pond explorations. Rothenberg knows, thanks to European researchers, that the loudest sounds in local ponds are made by the males of an insect called a lesser water boatman. It's not clear how the bugs can be so relatively loud, or why they're making sounds in the first place. Rothenberg notes that if you fish them out of the pond, they instantly fall silent, which may be a clue. Scientists do know how they're generating the sound: By rubbing their penises against their bodies. As unusual as the lesser water boatmen may be, their calling card has been identified. In a recording made at Lost Pond at Manitoga, there's a flourish of clicks every 40 seconds that sounds like a woodpecker using echolocation. At Savoy Mountain State Forest in Massachusetts, a dense rhythmic thrum slowly increases in intensity and speed over the course of a few minutes, like a DJ dialing up the beats. When Rothenberg sent the recordings to scientists for help, they essentially shrugged. First, there aren't many scientists studying freshwater bioacoustics. Second, those in the field focus less on individual sounds and more on the cornucopia. Can we identify whether an ecosystem is flourishing or struggling by listening to it? Does pollution or disease have a sonic signature? On that December day, the sonic signature of James Pond behind Haldane was leaning toward minimalism, in part because of the cold. Hoping to find a busier groove, Rothenberg reeled in his mic, only to find a confus...
This week on the podcast Mikki speaks to Chiel Poffé about his research in exogenous ketonesChiel is one of the lead researchers that has investigated ketone esters and their role in both sleep and recovery for endurance athletes. Mikki and Chiel discuss ketones as the fourth macronutrient, what their role is in the body, and what application they have for the athlete.Chiel's research was one of the first to look at exogenous ketones for recovery (and subsequently products such as SFuels use ketones as part of their recovery fuel). More recent research that Chiel is involved in assessed their application beyond this, looking at both sleep and performance. It appears the appetite affects of ketones can enhance the ability for athletes doing back to back trainings and Long days meet their energy needs when appetite would otherwise be suppressed. They also discuss ketones during ultra endurance events and the results of their research on cognitive function.Chiel Poffé is Postdoctoral Researcher Exercise and Muscle Physiology at University of Leuven in Belgium, his research interests in this field include exogenous ketones, recovery, and adaptation and how these can be used to enhance these aspects of an athletes training cycle.Chiel is most active on Twitter: https://twitter.com/chiel_poffe?lang=zh-Hant Contact Mikki:https://mikkiwilliden.com/https://www.facebook.com/mikkiwillidennutritionhttps://www.instagram.com/mikkiwilliden/https://linktr.ee/mikkiwillidenSave 20% on all NuZest Products WORLDWIDE with the code MIKKI at www.nuzest.co.nz, www.nuzest.com.au or www.nuzest.comCurranz supplement: MIKKI saves you 25% at www.curranz.co.nz or www.curranz.co.uk ooff your first order

For this week's episode, Sarah talks with researcher Tracy Poff who is doing her PhD on Medical Intuitives. After visiting a medical medium for an unexplained illness in her family, she felt compelled to study transpersonal psychology and then pursue her doctorate in medical intuitive practices. We talk about what exactly that is, how to discern a good one when meeting someone for the first time, and a general discussion of how intuition can inform all our decisions to make us more in tune with ourselves - a favorite topic on The Side Woo. About Tracy L. W. Poff Tracy L. W. Poff is a student of Life whose work in the world is to infuse everyday living with the light of divine context. She holds an MBA in Finance from The Wharton School, and an MA in Spiritual Psychology from the University of Santa Monica. Straddling the worlds of intellect and intuition, Tracy is a soul-centered guide whose quest and teaching is to know thyself. She is currently a Ph.D. student in the Transpersonal Psychology program at Sofia University in Palo Alto, California, and the focus of her doctoral research is medical intuition, also known as medical clairvoyance. Medical intuition is a perceptual skill that uses non-local awareness, or extrasensory perception, to assess health conditions of another person. The phenomenon of medical intuition is a fresh area of study within academics and through her work, Tracy hopes to deepen understanding and raise awareness of our intuitive capacity as human beings. One of the unspoken truths about interim CFO roles is that they sometimes don't lead to an actual CFO role—a fact that has turned more than a few seasoned finance executives into chronic nail-biters. For Jared Poff, who ultimately cleared all hurdles as an interim chief to land inside the CFO office at Designer Brands (formerly DSW), the job title ended up leaving a lasting impression. “I sat in the interim role for nearly 6 months, and they were absolutely the most grueling 6 months of my career—outside of COVID, maybe,” recalls Poff, who was recruited to Designer Brands back in 2015 with the expectation that he was going to be groomed by the company's then-CFO to take over her role within the next few years. For Poff, a former Cardinal Health finance director and more recently treasurer at retailer Big Lots, the plan was to join Designer Brands as treasurer and take a year or two to beef up his accounting and controllership experience before entering the C-suite. The fact that he was swapping a treasurer role at Big Lots for a treasurer role at an organization which at the time was only half the size of Big Lots didn't seem to matter, as Poff viewed the Designer Brands opportunity as one that offered a viable on-ramp to the CFO office. However, Poff tells us that within months of joining the company, Designer Brands' board put in motion a CEO change at roughly the same time that its then-CFO got recruited to fill another CFO opportunity. “I was named “interim” because the board was not 100 percent comfortable that a first-time CFO was a good match for a first-time CEO,” remarks Poff, who remembers wondering whether his career calculus may have been faulty. “I was treasurer, I was controller, and I was CFO, and because I didn't know whether I'd be keeping the CFO position, I couldn't hire for the other two roles,” reports Poff, who came across a list of 70 possible CFO candidates that was circulating among board members. “It was as if I were interviewing for the position every day, but I did get the nod,” comments Poff, who recalls his early days at Designer Brands as a period of accelerated learning. Says Poff: “I would do it again in a heartbeat—when it's trial by fire, you just learn everything.” –Jack Sweeney

*AUDIO FIXED* For the next two weeks, we're tackling the APEST gifts that Paul describes in Ephesians 4:11-13. We believe everyone who praises Jesus as Lord has been given one or two these gifts to be used for the sake of the church and the mission of God in the world. We begin the episode by describing what APEST are and why they're important. Our hope is that this discussion is a blessing for those who are just starting to understand their gifting as well as for those who are looking to go deeper. To help us understand the gifts, we're joined by folks who have been given those gifts, including Robbie Poff this week. Below we've listed the descriptions for the apostle and prophet gifts. To take the test, go to fivefoldministry.com Apostle gift Apostles catalyze and commission. They are catalysts who start new works, and they commission others to join God in the renewal of all things. They are pioneers, always moving into new territory. They help people discover and live out their calling. APOSTLES extend the gospel. They are always thinking about the future, bridging barriers, and establishing the church in new contexts. Apostles help people and communities live out the answer to Jesus's prayer, “Your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as it is in heaven.” Strengths They have big ideas–a lot of them. They see opportunity everywhere. They have a history of starting things They tend to attract a lot of people to their vision. They can easily envision how to build organizations and people. Weaknesses/immaturities They can't discern between good ideas and “God ideas,” between the constant flood of innovative thoughts and the ones that God is giving them to do. They jump around from one idea to the next, unable to stay focused on one thing. They can't “turn it off” (i.e., take a day off). They tend to have very little patience with needy people or those who won't “get on board.” Prophet Prophets - expose and embody. They also embody a counterculture community, calling people to live under God's reign. They have a passion for social justice and seek to cultivate a liberating environment, liberating people from personal sins, speaking truth to power and social sins. They reveal the heart of God and the heart of the people. Prophets call the church to God's new social order and help the congregation to stand with the poor and oppressed. They bring correction and challenge the dominant assumptions we inherit from the culture. Strengths They often enjoy spending time alone with God and sense his heart clearly. They are able to stand back from circumstances and get a clear picture of what's really going on underneath the surface. This clarity oftentimes enables them to come up with creative and innovative solutions that others don't see. They are outside-the-box thinkers, and tend to disrupt the status quo. Weaknesses They talk about their perspective as though it was simply “the truth.” Because they think they are the ones who really “get it,” they can form elite cliques in churches that destroy unity. They have to point out every inconsistency or problem they see. They can't hold their tongues. They have a hard time accepting people right where they're at. They tend to live in their heads, because their idealism is cleaner than the real-world messiness of ministry.
We're following up from NLCF's Shaped through Prayer series this week and diving a topic that we didn't get to hit on during the series and is massively shaping to our prayers: Unanswered prayers. To help us sort through the question of why doesn't God always answer our prayers, we're joined by two of NLCF's pastors, Robbie Poff and Wendy Chinn. They share about the challenge of staying close with God even when we aren't seeing Him do what we asked. Questions for reflection: -How have you seen God meet and grow you in prayer over the past season? -Are there things you've experienced that have caused you to back away from God in prayer? -Is there a prayer that scares you to pray? Or a request that pushes the limits of what you can honestly believe is possible?
Coming off NLCF's Shaped for Relationships series, Kristal Poff joins us for a conversation about a type of the relationship we didn't get to dive into during the series: friendship. Kristal highlights how crucial friendship was in Jesus's life and ministry. She also offers some helpful ideas about vulnerability and challenge in our friendships. Questions for reflection: What would it look like to take a step toward greater vulnerability in your friendships? Who can you let in on more of who you are? When you consider encouraging and challenging your friends, consider this: are you doing this for their good or for your own?

Exogenous ketone esters are a hot topic in cycling, but the best way to use this expensive substance to get faster is still up for debate. In our previous discussion with Dr. Chiel Poffé, we learned that ingesting ketone esters with bicarbonate may enhance racing performance under certain circumstances. In the second part of our conversation with Dr. Poffé, we learn about his research into using ketones as a recovery aid. Exogenous ketones are lauded by many for their endurance performance enhancing properties, but their impact on blood acidity is detrimental to performance and can even counteract their otherwise positive effects. Dr. Chiel Poffe and his partners conducted a study to learn if Bicarbonate Unlocks the Ergogenic Action of Ketone Monoester Intake in Endurance Exercise, and what they learned was surprising. Tune into this episode to learn the science behind ketones and bicarbonate, and how to introduce them into your training regimen to get faster.
