This is the Brew Time podcast. Brew-length episodes of content tips that you can listen while drinking your tea (or coffee). Plus, the occasional interview with people who are doing content differently. If you're new to the show, I'm Fiona. I'm a content writer for BCorps, Startups and independent businesses. Go and check out episode 2 with Jo Milmine where she talks about doing business without a website and not following what everyone else is doing.
I'm joined in this podcast by Jo Milmine, award-winning podcast host of Shiny Bees and business coach from Business Without The Bollocks. Jo joins me for a brew and we discuss: Doing business without a proper website How using a previous career can help with your content Why your hobbies can help attract the right customers. Being yourself and not trying to do what your competition is doing. How to use a podcast to market your business Why not doing as your told can work for you and marketing with less content is a strategy that can work. Building an audience that is engaged and committed to what you sell. Giving people what they need is more important than giving them what you want. And why not following the rules and even breaking them can make for great content that converts. Jo Milmine consistently puts her values and ideals at the heart of her business and that gives something good back to the world. And we have a debate on the great British brew. So....it's been a while since we've gabbed at you, hasn't it? Our apologies for the delay in getting this episode out; Allison was away at TNNA and our kids are in the final push for the end of the year, so it’s been a bit manic. So for this episode we thought it might be best to have a catch up. Shout outs, news and events: 1) HUGE shout out to everyone who joined us for our first ever WWKIPDay event. It was great to see so many new faces and we hope to see a lot of you back at knit night. Sorry we forgot to take pictures! Ack! 2) Shout out too to Karie Westermann, who has funded her Kickstarter for her book, This Thing of Paper. Karie has more than doubled her fundraising goal and we couldn’t be more pleased for her. Kudos Karie! 3) Another shout out to our friend Carmen from A Yarn Story in Bath. This week in the UK people are voting on whether or not the UK should stay in the EU. Carmen wrote a blog post about how a Brexit could potentially affect her business. Take a look. 4) Our awesome podcasting pal Jo Milmine of the Shinybees podcast won this year's Best UK Podcast award. We're well chuffed for her. Our Podcast Diva for episode 11 is Jo Milmine. Jo went from being a military officer in the Royal Air force to becoming an award winning podcaster. Since August 2012 Jo has hosted the Shiny Bees podcast, a show about knitting and yarn mixed with snippets of Jo’s life sprinkled with comedy. “Don’t mess with the knitters!” The Shiny bees podcast won the award for the Most Engaged Audience at the UK Podcasters’ Awards of 2015. The main criteria for this award is community engagement, so it’s great to get a chance to find out from Jo how to build and engage a podcast community and how she keeps them coming back for more. And you don’t need to know about knitting to pick up some useful hints and tips from Jo. I know very little about knitting - as will become apparent in this episode – and it gave me a fascinating insight into a whole new world. Who knew there was such a thing as a knit along! “There’s something from audio podcasts that you don’t get from video – it feels like a more intimate medium because you can’t see the person, so you’re engaging your imagination as to what they look like… It’s like reading a book versus watching a film." In episode 11 of Podcast Divas you find out about: How Jo went from life as a military officer in the Royal Air force to podcasting Where the name Shiny Bees came from The challenges of podcasting in rural South Africa How talking to fighter pilots and other military skills come in handy for podcasting Educating, enabling and entertaining your audience Which came first – the podcast or the business Why Jo was a wantrepreneur for a while Wine tasting for yarns The power of a niche podcast Building a business off the back of a podcast Building a community around your podcast Why podcasts are perfect for knitters How to engage with your audience Getting to know your audience in person Why it’s good to be a bit of a geek How to use meet-ups to grow your community Three ways to monetise your podcast How to turn listeners to members and keep them there Jo’s plans for future monetisation Knitting while you podcast "For people to love things the way you love them, and to hang around with those people, it’s something really special.” Microphones Started with a Samsung Meteor Now uses a Yeti Wants a Heil-PR40 “Our internet was beamed from on top of a mountain…to a little aerial on our house" Links mentioned in episode 11 Ravelry – a social media site for knitters (5 and a half million of them!) Patreon – crowd funding site for donations for podcasters “Caring for people and having time for them is the key to engagement.” An episode of the Shiny Bees podcast If you want to listen to an episode of Jo’s show, Jo suggests episode 55 about Susan Crawford’s 4-year heritage knitting project. This is a fascinating inspiring story of social history, fashion, design, ethnography and Shetland archives. “I think ‘If I was them what would I want?'” Other Podcast Divas to listen to Martine Ellis at I Make podcast Louise Scollay at Knit British “If they’re sitting, they’re knitting.” Where to find Jo Shiny Bees - Website The Golden Skein – Jo’s membership site for high quality, limited edition yarns from around the world.

Rachel is still working on a series of accessory designs for The Fibre Co, in their lusciously chunky Tundra yarn (60% llama/30% merino/10% silk). But while on travels around the US visiting loads of yarn shops in the guise of checking out potential places to live, she fell down and got a kit for the Aranami Shawl by OlgaJazzy (Rav link) from Knit Knack in Arvada, CO, including some gorgeous Frabjous Fibers Wonderland Yarns. Celebration: We are celebrating our 20th Episode (yay!), the Indie Maker community in London and the UK (hooray!), and also got to talk to Sue Blacker of Blacker Yarns about their very special 10th Birthday Celebration yarn, Cornish Tin. This yarn is made from a blend of ten different fibres, and comes in a 4-ply or DK weight. Sadly, it is only available in very limited quantities - for those of you going on the Yarn Crawl on Saturday, both Nest and Knit with Attitude will have Cornish Tin available, in advance of it's official release on 18th September! Blacker Yarns very kindly provided us with a sample of the yarn to play with AND a full skein of the 4-ply in Wheal Rose Red to give away to one lucky listener! To enter, leave a comment on this post and tell us what pattern you'd knit with this yarn. We will pick a random post as a winner. Entries are open until 11:59 pm BST on 10th September, 2015. Thanks for joining us again! You can find us on Ravelry, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Pinterest, or go leave a review for us on iTunes.
