In today's show, an introduction to the wool series, Betty and Trev respond to a podcast episode called ‘Wearing Hair' from ‘Articles of Interest' by Avery Trufelman. We discuss the concept of wearing human hair textiles as an alternative biomaterial as spearheaded by the Dutch company ‘Human Material Loop' asking… is it vegan to wear human hair? We go on to unpack some of the inherent ethical issues with sheep's wool as a material and critique the wool advocacy of author and knitting influencer, Clara Parkes.  Music played: Hair – The Cowsills: https://archive.org/details/the-cowsills-hair. Lachlan Tigers – The Bushwackers Band (1977): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FjorT4nQvs4 . Flash Jack from Gundagai – The Bushwackers (2020):  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wWJprPwyUqQ. Freedom of Species Spotify Playlist: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/3TJQujKYjGFoFP6LhBbaTS?si=6ghUWmzkQpyv...  Listen to ‘Wearing Hair' from ‘Articles of Interest' here: https://articlesofinterest.substack.com/p/wearing-hair Human Material Loop and information about human hair textiles: https://humanmaterialloop.com/ . https://zsofiakollar.com/human-material-loop/ Other links and references: https://edgarsmission.org.au/animal/baarack/ . Kumar Kumawat, T., Sharma, A., Sharma, V., & Chandra, S. Clara Parkes became many knitters' guiding light and best friend when she launched Knitter's Review in 2000. One of the early standouts in the early online knitting landscape, the site developed a devoted following for its in-depth, objective yarn reviews and lively forums. Several years after the site's inception, she began writing books, starting with The Knitter's Book of Yarn, which was followed by The Knitter's Book of Wool and The Knitter's Book of Socks. As she explored the yarn industry, Clara carefully maintained a journalist's independence, taking readers along with her as she learned how the yarns we love come to be. After her first three books, which were large-format, full-color, and featured a number of designs, her following works have been memoirs of her literal and metaphorical travels or in-depth narratives reporting about the yarn world. In 2012, she launched the Great White Bale, a combination small-batch yarn experiment and behind-the-scenes tour of the remaining American wool industry, for which she purchased a very special bale of wool and reported on its progress through the process of becoming yarn. In recent years, she has created several online communities: The Wool Channel, which is devoted to celebrating wool, and The Daily Respite, which offers a moment of wonder and calm each morning. Clara invites knitters and readers to join her in exploring the ways in which wool is a force for good in the world, and how crafters can join in its support. Today is April 5, 2023. Today we talk about the socks I am knitting. I am in love with the malabrigo yarn camaleon. Today we talk about the burnout I am feeling from knitting. I also talk a little about Vanishing Fleece by Clara Parkes. This inspired the idea of knitting a sock from your country. The sock from beginning to end, must be collected and knitted in your country. I will be doing an instagram pictures of those of you that send me pictures of your socks that have been collected and knitted in your country. I think it will be awesome to see socks from around the world. I am available to knit socks if you would like me to.  I also can test out yarns for socks.  Just reach out for either of these and lets get talking. If you're a person who has despaired over ever finding a nice 100 percent wool sweater and decided to knit your own, odds are you've heard of Clara Parkes. Parkes, who started out in 2000 with a newsletter reviewing yarn, now has six books under her belt, including the New York Times best-selling Knitlandia. Her seventh book, Vanishing Fleece, is a yarn of a different kind—the unlikely story of how she became the proud proprietor of a 676-pound bale of wool and, in the process of transforming it into commercial yarn, got an inside look at a disappearing American industry. Parkes journeys across the country from New York to Wisconsin and Maine to Texas. Along the way, she meets shepherds, shearers, dyers, and the countless mill workers who tend the machinery that's kept us in woolens for more than a century, but which for the past 50 years has been on the verge of collapse.Go beyond the episode:Clara Parkes's Vanishing Fleece: Adventures in American WoolPeruse her reviews of yarn and other woolly wares on the Knitter's Review websiteWatch yarn company Brooklyn Tweed's gorgeous video series on how woolen-spun and worsted-spun yarn is made—and how greasy fleece is scoured into clean, fluffy combed woolSome of the woolly companies mentioned in this episode: Allbirds wool shoes, Farm to Feet wool socks, Catskill Merino yarn (the source of her 676-pound bale), Lani Estill's carbon-neutral Bare Ranch, ElsaWool breed-specific yarnsTune in every week to catch interviews with the liveliest voices from literature, the arts, sciences, history, and public affairs; reports on cutting-edge works in progress; long-form narratives; and compelling excerpts from new books. Swiss sheep aren't known for their wool. But they still play a vital role in the Alpine ecosystem: that of agile and incredibly efficient lawnmowers. Which is exactly why Claire Jeannerat and her husband Damien began farming in 2014. From their farm in Crans Montana, they raise rare and indigenous breeds of sheep and goats that are highly adapted to the Alpine environment. On any given day, the animals can be found nibbling everywhere from grassy pastures and the occasional neighbor's garden to the steepest of Alpine slopes—all of which Claire shares with the world through her much-loved Instagram account, The Swiss Shepherdess. Claire and her husband are among the last farmers in Switzerland to continue the ancient tradition of transhumance, which involves moving the flocks by foot over multiple days and long distances to and from their summer pastures high in the Alps. Wool Channel founder Clara Parkes catches up with Claire just a few days before she and Damien embark for the season. They talk about what led Claire to leave a successful career in hospitality and hotel management to become a full-time first-generation farmer. And Claire shares some secret tips from the new project she's begun with her twin sister Kate. Called "How Being More Goat Can Support Your Resilience and Wellbeing," the 60-minute interactive webinar combines Kate's professional training as a resilience expert with the invaluable life lessons Claire has learned from her animals—in particular, the goats. Details and tickets for the July 27, 2021 session here.Voices in Wool is made possible by members of The Wool Channel. She is proud to be publishing the works of many wonderfully creative authors, including Heather Ross, Denyse Schmidt, Clara Parkes, Natalie Goldberg, Kaffe Fasset, Lotta Yansdotter, Lena Corwin, and Livia Chetti. She is also the author of several books, including Knitting in America, Kids Knitting, and Weekend Knitting. We talk about what Melanie looks for in a proposal, what sets her books apart, and how important an author's audience is now to the success of a book. Melanie explains how she works with each author to develop their idea and to produce a beautifully crafted, informative, and high quality finished book. Melanie and I try to look into the future of craft publishing and figure out what we see there. Please note that this show used to be called the While She Naps podcast.
