This week Phil Moore, church leader and author of the excellent Straight to the Heart Bible Commentary series, joins Matt to discuss his most recent book, called The Forgotten Manifesto of Jesus, in which he shares stories and lessons learnt from the revival in Iran and its overflow in other nations. Post Covid 19, Phil moved on from leading a large and thriving church in SW London to focus on taking the gospel personally into the streets, bars and council estates in his neighbourhood, where he's looking to meet those who would not be likely to come to church. He has been inspired, mentored and taught by the leaders of the underground Iranian church who have drawn him back to some of the key teachings of Jesus in the gospels about mission. Phil challenges the church in the West to adopt a humble posture, to learn from where the church is growing and to consider radically different models of disciple-making that we have been used to.To contact Phil, visit https://philmoorebooks.com/contactAs mentioned at the end of the episode, we have our Neighbours and Nations Day on the 23rd November. It's the first time in three years that we have won away at Franklin's Gardens although after going 18-9 down early in the second half it was great to see the boys ‘dig' themselves out of a hole and ‘sow the seeds' of a victory with a penalty and a converted try before the break ultimately making Miles ‘soil' his pants at the death by efficiently managing the game out in the second half.We revel in this bonus point 33-27 victory and continue our strategy of involving our listeners in the pod by hearing from two roving fan reporters who sent us outside broadcasts from the game. This result leaves us second in the table with 9 points but we're not getting too carried away as its early days and we still remember what happened last season after our good start. We also preview the visit of the fancy dan boys from SW London with help from our good friends at the Harlequins podcast and finish off by discussing some of the issues raised by Steve Lansdown in his Q&A last week as well as revealing the result of the annual BBTG paddle board derby and find out who has their hands on Kingsbridge Cup. Pete is joined by Lee and Miles for a cheeky beer and a bit of rugby banter.

We're serving an ace episode of RunPod this week because Jenni has gone to Wimbledon - the most prestigious tennis tournament in the world to record with the legendary sports commentator Andrew Cotter. When Andrew isn't commentating on a Centre Court match and enjoying overpriced bowls of strawberries, you can find him running through leafy SW London parks and climbing up hills with his gorgeous dogs Olive and Mabel. Running is Andrew's saviour between work, and if anything is going to motivate you to run today, it's probably the dulcet tones of a Scottish Broadcaster... NB: this is a LIVE recording, so please forgive the joyful crowds, occasional tennis ball, and the sound of sprinklers… that grass has got to stay green somehow!

In this, the penultimate episode of Series 22 of Walk the Pod, Rach takes her podcast for a walk because she doesn't have a dog. Take 10 minutes out of your day to walk in nature, and to pay attention to what's directly in front of you. Your host Rachel Wheeley is a comedian and human in the world, trying to figure out how to be happy here. In this episode Walking the cycle path in SW London and contemplating various things: the best name for a squirrel, loneliness and the stress cycle. And although I wasn't remembering it correctly, delightedly to have brought you this wonderful quote from Heather Havrilesky from this Ask Polly column from December, 2018. "This is the beauty and the horror of being a writer — or trying to be anything, really: You can feel important or unimportant. No one cares. No one is watching. You can have fun or you can suffer. No one is grading you. No one is invested. You can proclaim yourself ahead of schedule, or you can spend your whole life telling yourself that you're running behind. No one is there to measure. You can suspect that you're insecure and outdated, long-winded and short-sighted, high-strung and lowbrow. Or you can conclude that you're charismatic, a teensy bit talented, never boring, and reasonably worthy. You have choices. You are the decider. Because the truth is, no one else gives a flying f*ck." Completing the stress cycle Now that the threats to our safety are remote and intangible, how do we clear our systems of stress induced cortisol? Here are a few suggestions: Do some physical exercise Pet a dog Hug a friend Snog your partner/partners Hug your children Laugh Have a conversation with somebody Have a good cry Do something creative: make or cook something Have a bath My newsletter on the subject Thank you for walking with me, Poddies. Conflict is normal in a healthy relationship, and relationships have definitely been feeling the strain in lockdown as we're in each other's company 24/7 and the division of responsibility in the family around childcare, supervision of schoolwork and domestic duties becomes strained. Parents are used to putting the children first but our guest today believes that the primary relationship is between the adults. The couple relationship can get lost if parents become a child-rearing unit. This episode looks at how we can communicate our needs in an effective way, Pam Custers is an experienced Psychotherapist and Coach with a history of working successfully with individuals, couples and families. Skilled in Relationship Counselling and coaching for those wishing to have a flourishing relationship in both their personal life. She runs a thriving business in Wimbledon, SW London called The Relationship Practice. Listen to this episode with Pam if you want to learn: Why the relationship between parents is so important and needs greater focus, in fact needs to be privileged over all else. (Note: this does not mean neglecting the children!) How important it is for parents to present a united front to the children and how failure to do this can impact your parenting How the ‘hot spots' of family life can become a battle ground between a couple when there is no united front How the burden of decision-making around family life can get taken on by one parent (often women) and breed resentment and the other parent can feel left out of an intense relationship between the other parent and the child How a good relationship is co-created How to be a team that together construct the home Why having a united front is so important in holding boundaries What to do to build a strong team, including having a ‘family' meeting each week where the couple takes time to plan their week, compare the diaries and work out priorities. The idea is to construct the day/week to set up for success. This pre-empts the emotional resonance of the week. These practical ideas mean that each partner is really supporting the other and puts the couple on the same page.(see the module on Setting up for Success in our positive parenting courses) recognising that a united front needs to be continually worked on and compromise is essential How dealing well with conflict depends on connections in our lives (and at the moment we are relying solely on our partners for all those connections) and how it is important to create some moments of separation, to demarcate between work time and home time Why now is not a good time to have a big re-think about our relationships and it is a good time to show your partner some compassion, cutting them some slack How it can help to ask the question of your partner “how can I support you to support me?” About the four horsemen of the apocalypse, the worst of which is contempt, and how if this is present it might be time to get professional help because there will be needs underlying the negative lens through which partners are viewing each other that are not being met And as usual we finish with our SUMs. We are celebrating some Surprising Uplifting Moments, some good things coming out of this pandemic. As a child, Jas Hothi thought everyone was like him. It wasn't until his teens that he realized he was different from others. And it became even more apparent when his career took off while in the corporate world. His big "AHA" came when he had the best year ever in sales recruitment, having made "Employee of the Year." Most people would love to have that kind of accolade. But for Jas, something wasn't right. He was unfilled and just kept wondering why he wasn't happier. Discovering that he was a highly sensitive introvert was a powerful realization for Jas. Sensitive introverts don't always know they're different because, as he puts it, "we become used to our own reality." Also, when you become used to what you know, anything different is frightening. It turns out, for Jas, the Universe was nudging him in another direction, and he knew he had to trust his intuition. Show Notes This episode is a real down-to-earth conversation with Jas as he shares his courageous journey to step out of his comfort zone (without a plan) to recalibrate his life. He learned to trust his intuition, honor, and accept who he was and allow that to guide him to make new and positive choices. Although he has many interests and passions, he's committed to sharing what he's learned to help other highly sensitive introverts acknowledge and understand their unique gifts so they can better navigate the world. Copywriting with Martin Booth Copywriting is second nature to Martin Booth. He learnt his trade as a journalist. Now he runs Leboo Media in Kingston, south west London. A Career in Sports Journalism Martin's background is in journalism. Particularly, sports journalism. He spent more than 20 years on the staff of various national newspaper titles on the sports pages. He worked for the Daily Express, Sunday Mirror and News of the World (when it closed down in 2011). After that, Martin moved into the betting industry both in business and consumer markets. After his contract with that industry expired he just knew he should be doing words. The Go-to Copywriter When someone around him in his various job postings wanted something doing with copywriting or words (LinkedIn profile, a strategy for horse-racing, etc) Martin was the person they turned to. He realised this was his sweet-spot. 18 months ago, he started networking around his home in Kingston, SW London, and picked up several contracts. He went from there. What sort of material does he write? You name it, Martin will write it. "I keep hearing I'm supposed to find a niche and specialise." He writes: webpages blogs case studies emails articles white papers annual reports brochures leaflets big documents audio scripts video scripts plus a lot of proof reading! Who are his copywriting clients? Nor does he work for any particular sector of clients. Recently, he has written for: charities carpet cleaners bike makers garden suppliers solicitors planners data security specialists someone who makes mayonnaise property experts mortgage providers At this stage in his businesses development, he is happy to say, "come one, come all". His niche is words. What has mayonnaise got in common with journalism? http://thenext100days.org/wp-content/uploads/2018/11/Mayonnaise.mp4 LISTEN - your initial briefing Who is your audience? Who are you trying to get this over to? Shorthand Martin One icebreaker Martin deploys is shorthand... Listen to the story and re-produce it faithfully (hence shorthand) for the client in a commercial context. from wsj.com LeBoo Media - it's French isn't it? http://thenext100days.org/wp-content/uploads/2018/11/LeBoo-french.mp4 When a client says their audience is 'anyone really', who must delve deeper to help them. is it people in a particular area? age group? demographic? Then you can write for the audience. So the message is phrased and targeted to the right people. It is always better to absorb feedback from customers' clients. Speak to happy customers and adopt that as part of the copy. This message: I needed this The company provided that Therefore I'd recommend them The Manchester United Transfer Story - promote the headline grabbing story that will attract readers. Martin wrote a book last week 10,000 words, loads of illustration, for the centenary of a design company. He loved it. The research. Listening to people who have worked there. He enjoys getting the tone of voice. So Martin is a ghostwriter in waiting. The designer in question designed Welwyn Garden City? [a cemetery with light?] Copywriting versus Journalism So much comes down to clients. It's about establishing trust. Client: leverage their satisfaction. What fails has Martin observed? how often do you go on a website and YOU HAVE NO IDEA WHAT THEY DO and the benefit they bring to you. absolutely critical we are, we do - rare do they use YOU heres how we are positioned to solve your problem Martin would love it if everybody used the word YOU. LeBoo - Getting the Message Across The first word on his website is You've... Focus on benefits All his networking group sell 'peace of mind'. Mortgage, IT support, copywriting = peace of mind. Ease that burden.
Not Hygge, but hug hotels. Winter wilderness wellness hotels. While some hotels lend themselves to the summer months, others come alight when the days are short and cold. Hotels which lend themselves to the silver grey winter months of November to end of March, which have fire places with real fires, which spread across one side of the room, and four posters which don’t look out of place in large windowed rooms with cornicing and rosary which hasn’t been put in to add some character. Stately homes with long corridors, high ceilings, oversized dining rooms, where premium rooms are in the main house, and any modernized room is considered sub standard (and usually cheaper). Hotels where Mr And Mrs Smith were probably first inspired to compile their portfolio as the quintessential romance is only matched by the discretion of the staff. Here are my favourite hug hotels of 2019 within a driveable distance of SW London (ie close to home but not too close to home), and why they deserve a visit this winter be it with or without your Mr/Mrs Smith. You won’t want to leave.. Bailliffscourt Hotel and Spa, Climping Arundel Gothic mullioned windows, gardens and electric car charging. Close to the coast and with an excellent spa with alternative therapies as well as the traditional (reflexology, light therapy are amongst the alternatives). Princess Diana allegedly visited with Hewitt. I visited on many occasions. Excellent winter wellness hotel, which feels more like a house party place - and lots of opportunity for beautiful walks if you leave the bedroom. [https://www.prideofbritainhotels.com/](https://www.prideofbritainhotels.com/) Maison Talbooth Dedham, Colchester Don’t let the Colchester address put you off. This is Constable country, the rooms are named after seminal authors and poets and are very stylishly decorated. Breakfast is at the hotel, but take lunch and super at the nearby Talbooth restaurant owned by the same people. The food is excellent, the setting idyllic. Intimate, cosy, special. Milsomhotels.com Brimstone, Lake District Cumbria While the other hotels do cater for children, this is modern adults only hotel, but they have fireplaces in the bedrooms and the food and facilities are exceptional. Bath, bed and fireplace all in the same room bedrooms, with own terrace and fifteen minutes from Lake Windermere. Brimstonehotel.co.uk Barnsley House, Cirencester, Cotswolds Adults only again 17thcentury Manor House, four miles from Cirencester, fireplaces, uber stylish spa, the stable suites are the ones to ask for. In today's podcast episode I'm honoured to be joined by Sophie Brigstocke. Sophie won Doula of the Year in 2017, so this is a real treat - my second Doula of the Year guest! As well as being a doula, Sophie also runs Nurturing Birth where she trains doulas alongside her co-founder Florence Etienne-Jackson. Together they have trained over 3000 doulas, so she knows a thing or two about birth and supporting women as they approach motherhood. It was really tricky to pick a title for today's podcast because we talked about so much. But it's all birthy and all very interesting! Some of the things we talk about include; Sophie's epic 10-day labour - YES you read that right... 10-day labour! her ECV and her difficult birth experience planning her subsequent VBAC her elective emergency c-section Preparing for motherhood and parenting We talked a lot about how we can use pregnancy to prepare for motherhood. Often the focus of pregnancy is preparing for the birth, but preparing for motherhood is also important because there are things that can be done during pregnancy to lay the foundation. Sophie shares with us that a lot of couples come unstuck with a new baby and they say they would have liked to have had help to prepare their relationship for the arrival of the baby. And yet, when classes were put on, no-one signed up. The benefit of hindsight, eh? the case for ditching parenting books and tuning into your baby why the mother is the expert on her baby the importance of tuning into the mothering instinct what women can do during pregnancy to prepare why psychological preparation is important maternal mental health Let’s take the emphasis OFF what we need to BUY materialistically. Let’s think a lot more about what we need to invest in for our mental and emotional well-being. Sophie tells us that "in terms of a good head space, preparing for the birth has a big impact. Your birth informs your postnatal period in a big way. I felt like my body had let me down. The positive feelings from having a good breastfeeding journey made such a difference” We also talk about breastfeeding and touch on some common breastfeeding myths. And any birth conversation is not exactly complete unless oxytocin is mentioned! Sophie feels that "oxytocin isn’t talked about enough. It has an important role in early parenting too; it’s part of breastfeeding." About Sophie Brigstocke Sophie is a birth and postnatal doula, Doula Mentor at Doula UK, Breastfeeding Supporter and Baby Massage Teacher. She was awarded “Doula of the Year” at MaMa Conference, 2017. Sophie started working with mums and babies in 2004 when she trained as a baby massage teacher with Peter Walker, something she regularly teaches with busy courses around SW London. She also trained as a Therapeutic Massage Practitioner at the London College of Massage, specialising in Pregnancy and Post-Natal treatments. She offers Closing the Bones postnatal massage and ceremony to new mothers, as well as babywearing support. You track Sophie down at Nurturing Birth. Webinar for Birth Workers In today's episode, I announced that I'll be running a live webinar for birth workers. I've been getting lots of enquiries from birth workers who would like mt to share how I help women to prepare for a fearless birth. So I thought I'd run a webinar. If you'd like to join me on the webinar, then you can sign up here.

Rachel is still working on the Coffee Date with Mark Ruffalo shawl, and the rows are getting really really long. And she's been doing a bit of spinning. She’s now back to working her way through her WIPs and on a couple of baby and toddler sweaters. Book review: Women’s Weekly Guide to Crochet by Tracey Todhunter Tracy Todhunter, a long time crochet designer and teacher, has a new book out that is perfect for those, like us, who are not the most accomplished crocheters. Please get in touch with us and let us know how to get that to you, and congratulations! What We're Working On: Allison is going great guns on her baby sweater, and has finished the sleeves. She's also been cranking out a new crocheted shawl from Joanne Scrace's new book The Shawl Project Book 1. Rachel has finished her Freshwater Shawl by Andrea Mowbry and Annie Rowden, in fantastic Triskelion Yarns Elen, and is spinning up some of her March Lab Goddess Fibre Club Wensleydale. She's also just discovered that her recent Yarn Chicken winning streak will come to a stunning halt if she continues with her current shawl design project, so there's some frogging in her immediate future. Book Review: Coffee with C. C. In this episode we review C. C. Almon's new book, Coffee with C. C.: A 7 pattern caffeine inspired knitting collection. Disclaimer: Rachel was the tech editor for this project, so take her comments with however many grains of salt you need. The collection includes six sock patterns, ranging from plain vanilla (French Vanilla Cappuccino socks) to more elaborate (I Love You More Than Pumpkin Spice socks), and also includes a shawl pattern. The patterns include lots of textured stitches and interest, but straightforward constructions so they are perfect for new or less experienced sock knitters looking to expand their skills! The hard copy of the book can be purchased from the JavaPurl Designs website for $18 plus shipping, and the eBook is available through Ravelry for $16 plus shipping. *** As always, please let us know what you think through comments on the show notes, send us an email at hello@yarninthecity.com or via Twitter, Facebook and Instagram. We're going for the day with the London Guild of Spinners, Weavers and Dyers. Spaces are filling up quickly so check on our Ravelry board for all the details. Note from us: we realized after recording this episode of the podcast that we teased you unnecessarily by hinting at news to this year's Great London Yarn Crawl and we're sorry we forgot to mention it! This year's GLYC will take place on Saturday, 10th September and we're once again looking for volunteer yarn guides. If you'd like to help out, please email us at hello@yarninthecity.com with "I'd like to volunteer for this year's GLYC" in the subject line. Thanks! What we’re working on: Rachel is almost done with her Honey Cowl in handspun and is dyeing like crazy for EYF. Allison finished the Tulip Cardigan she had picked up again in the last episode, and is so close to being done with her Heggelia mitts! And is anxiously planning what new thing she’ll cast on next. Two of our favourite things: yarn and books Yarn Review: the new Tamar Lustre Blend by Blacker Yarns. Book reviews: Crochet Yeah! By Joanne Scrace and Kat Goldin of The Crochet Project, and Penguin by Anna Maltz. Correction: we mistakenly mentioned Navia as the yarns used in Penguin. Yarn support was actually provided by The Island Wool Company. We apologise for the error! And a giveaway! Leave a comment below telling us what you'd make with a single skein of the new Tamar in fingering weight. Name the pattern and leave your Ravelry name and we'll keep the contest open until end of day on Monday, March 14th. Happy New Year, and welcome to 2016! News and Events: 9th January - We'll be renewing our memberships of The London Guild of Weavers, Spinners and Dyers at their January meeting. This is great organisation and with excellent content and speakers at their monthly meetings. Membership is only £25 for the year. 10th January – Joanne Scrace (notsogranny) is teaching her Crochet Shawls class at Knit With Attitude. 13th January (mistakenly listed as the 10th of February in the podcast) – It’s the first Late Night Knitty Lock-in of 2016 over at Wild & Woolly. Check out the details on their website. 17th January – the Waltham Abbey Wool Show, at the Waltham Abbey Marriott, Old Shire Lane, Waltham Abbey, Essex EN9 3LS (Update: Porpoise Fur will be at WAWS, so come say hello if you're at the show!). 30th January – Woolly Wormhead, hat designer extraordinaire, is teaching two classes at Knit With Attitude. In the morning she's teaching a Knitting in the Round Masterclass that will include all sorts of tips and tricks, and in the afternoon it’s all about Turning Sideways. 6th-7th February - Rachel is teaching two classes at A Yarn Story: Learn to Spin: Drop Spindle on Saturday afternoon, and a two part workshop on How to Knit a Sexy Sweater on Sunday; the morning session will cover swatching, and the afternoon is all about pattern modifications. 13th-14th February – Cécile Balladino is teaching her Eclectic Gipsyland crochet at Loop. These same class is offered on both Saturday and Sunday. This is not a beginner’s crochet class so you will be expected to already know how to crochet. 19th-21st February – Unravel is happening at Farnham Maltings. We will be there with two stands – one for Porpoise Fur and also a Yarn in the City stand where we will be debuting the London Craft Guide! 26th-28th February – Joeli’s Kitchen Retreat in Manchester. Featuring classes (some spaces still available for classes with Kate Atherley!) and a mini marketplace on the Sunday that will include Countess Ablaze. What we’re working on: Rachel's last FO of 2015 was a lace shawl design that's been submitted to Knittyspin (so there aren't any pictures of it to show). She's also been working on her Dark & Stormy cardigan by Thea Colman, and is on Sleeve #2. She has also picked up her long-standing bead and colourwork project, the Marie Curie Mittens by Emily Bujold, and did a few more rows on the #14 Bus. As you do... Spinning-wise she's been working on some colourful mini-skeins for a design project that will debut at Unravel, and on her Dark Lady BFL from the December instalment of the Porpoise Fur Lab Goddess Fibre Club. Allison finished the Basic Rib Socks for her Dad while in Miami. She's now working on the Gradient Pullover by Amy Miller in handspun merino/silk, and is hooking up a sample for Unravel of the Candy Bag by Cécile Balladino, one the projects upcoming from the London Craft Guide. Book News and a Giveaway: The London Craft Guide is coming! After much more back and forth on the design and layout than we ever would have imagined, we are now in the final stretch for the book to be sent to the printer’s by the end of the month. We will be officially launching at Unravel, but those of you who preordered the book will have your copies sent out as soon as we have them in hand. Thank you so much for your patience! Keep watching our blog and Instagram feeds as we start to show off some of the amazing projects and shops from the book over the coming weeks leading up to Unravel. Speaking of which: anyone making plans to go to Unravel at Farnham Maltings? Thanks to the lovely organisers of this fantastic local festival we have a pair of day tickets to giveaway. To enter, leave a comment in the show notes and let us know what you’re looking forward to seeing at the show. Entries will be open until February 1st, and we'll announce the winner on the following podcast. (Contest note: this pair of tickets is for a single day’s entry to the show and does not include any travel to Farnham.) Good luck! Start as you mean to go on: The idea for the theme of this podcast came to us after seeing the usual New Year’s resolutions, year-end wrap ups and general commentary on social media in the last week or so. We’ve been struck by the emerging themes, and by the prevalence of all of us to try and shape the direction of our creative endeavours and activities. We’ve seen a few different things that look like fun, or inspired us and we wanted to share them with you: Instagram #2015bestnine for @allidecks, @yarninthecity and @porpoisefur 1. #2015bestnine – what were your most liked Instagram photos? 2. Finding your word for the year – Karie Westermann had a lovely blog post about this and Allison talked about finding your word in relation to some work she's done with Tara Swiger's Lift Off workshop. We've also found this great Find Your Word resource. 3. The Maker’s Year – A Playful Day 4. The year of #yarnstashlove – Louise Zass-Bangham/Inspiration Knits (and #fibrestashlove, which we are shamelessly stealing from Louise for our own devices) We’re interested to know what plans you’re making for yourselves this year – or if you are? Are you one of those planners or not at all? Send us a note or let us know in the comments on the show notes. A small bit of housekeeping: in an effort to be more predictable for you all, we’re going to try out a more formal podcasting schedule this year. We've decided that it will be easier if the podcast episodes go live on a specific day, so you know when they'll be posted. So, apart from this episode (which is obviously not going up on the right day), we will launch an episode of the podcast on the first and third Sundays of the month. As always, please let us know what you think by tweeting, liking, or loving our posts when you see them go up on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram – or even better, leave a comment in the shownotes or send us an email at hello AT yarninthecity DOT com. You can also find us on iTunes or Stitcher Radio (and please consider leaving a review for us!), or download us directly from the Yarn in the City website. Knit night is back for 2016, with a later end time too! You can find us on Wednesday nights upstairs at The Goat on the Rise pub on Battersea Rise, a stone’s throw from Clapham Junction station in SW London. We meet from 7pm to around 10pm. The food is great and the knitters are friendly. Join us! Music credits (all available on NoiseTrade) Howlin' At Nothing (Live in Denver), S. O.
