Dumb Nerds: Comedians Talking About Smart Topics They're Too Dumb For
The fanciest and longest episode yet! Guests Muriel Montgomery and Nick Casalini (Hella in Your Thirties Podcast) are a wonderful, married couple/talented comedians who moved to Los Angeles from Chicago three years ago. They all bond over their various day jobs of waiting tables while doing comedy at night. While Cassi worked tacky, chain restaurants like Denny’s and The Cheesecake Factory, Muriel and Nick worked at much cooler and classier places that included wine and cheese pairings! Nick and Muriel teach Cassi how to properly open a bottle of wine at a table and how to tell a good bottle of wine from a disgusting bottle of wine that might have spider legs and squirrel parts in it. Yikes! Muriel and Nick then spoil Cassi by presenting delicious cheeses with different wines of various qualities to try and see which cheese pairs best with what type of wine. It’s a delicious, drunk, fun blast of an evening. Please drink and eat cheese along with us! See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
We're running a monthly series called "Food for Thought," in-depth conversations with groundbreakers who run farms, restaurants, wineries, breweries and bars around California and are shaking up the way we eat and drink. Our second talk is with a couple of "empire builders" in the region's restaurant scene: Chris Jarosz of Broderick Roadhouse fame and Garrett Van Vleck, one of the partners in the Shady Lady crew. Neither of them are top chefs or award-winning bartenders, but they sure know how to build brands and turn concepts into drink and dining hotspots. Listen to Jarosz and Van Vleck talk about how their pasts, presents and futures, where they're rolling out the next phases of their dining empires, and how they manage all these places without losing their sanity. Today our guest is actress/comedian Katie Nathan and she comes on to talk about figure skating’s most dramatic and unnecessary event, the infamous Tonya Harding-Nancy Kerrigan debacle! Tonya Harding conspired with her husband, Jeff Gillooly, to take Nancy Kerrigan out of the running to compete in the Olympics by whacking her above her right knee cap. The job was poorly done, Nancy recovered in 10 days and was able to compete in the Olympics and win the silver medal. Meanwhile, Tonya went on to compete in the Olympics too and had to perform along side Nancy while the feds were breathing done her neck to figure out what happened. Tonya buckled under pressure, made a big embarrassing show and finished in 8th. The world watched this whole thing go down in real time. What a weird, trashy world we live in! Tonya denies that she had any involvement in harming Nancy while Jeff Gillooly, now Jeff Stone, takes responsibility for his actions, assures Tonya was involved, along with his team of criminal buffoons, Shane Stant, Shawn Eckardt and Shane’s Uncle and getaway driver, Derrick Smith. In 2017, 23 years after this infamous event happened, Margot Robbie is gearing up to play Tonya in the movie, “I Tonya” and everyone involved in the 1994 event, including Nancy Kerrigan, desperately want to get away from it all. Katie and Cassi take some detours to talk about why tourist sites in Hollywood are the worst, Joe’s Crab Shack, Disneyland, the documentary “Searching for Sugarman” and why owning up and letting go of your mistakes will make you a happier, healthier person. Enjoy! See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
With summer just a few short months away (if you're in the Northern Hemisphere), why not watch a movie about a group of dirty hippies robbing banks to finance their carefree lifestyle? This week we watched 1991's Point Break and figured that it warranted a discussion. Should you choose to listen, we recommend that you wax up your board, put on a wet suit that's a size too small and go sit in your bathtub. Make sure that your bathtub is full of salt water though, or else what's the point? Once you're settled in, grab yourself an antique fish tank filled with Corona and listen in as we discuss important subjects like burgers at Joe's Crab Shack, the good and bad of surf culture, and Gary Busey's sugar cube diet. Download and stream the episode here, on iTunes here, or on Stitcher here. Thank you for listening! The song playing at the end of the episode is “I Will Not Fall” by Wire Train. You can buy their music here. Contact the show at bulletsbombsbeer@gmail.com.

Sixth grader Marley Dias loves to read. But the books she was assigned in school never seemed to have protagonists who looked like her. So she started a nationwide book drive to collect 1,000 books featuring black girls as main characters. By the time her self-imposed deadline came around (February 1st), Marley had amassed a book collection she says is important not just for black girls, but for everyone. "We all know that America is er very, very, very diverse," she says, "but we're not really seeing it in the literature that we're pushed to read." Marley says reading books about black girls' lives makes her feel like her own experiences are part of a bigger, more universal story. "I know who I am," she says, "but you still want to see it in other places, so you don't feel like something that's rare and that's never really been around." In our Juicy Fruit segment this week, we talk about how a lynching postcard made its way into the table decor at a Joe's Crab Shack in Minnesota (and how referring to a lynching as a "public execution" ignores the historical context of the act). And we also send love to a young gay couple, Marquez Tolbert and Anthony Gooden, in Georgia. They're recovering from injuries sustained when Gooden's mother's boyfriend poured boiling water on them as they slept. Georgia doesn't have a hate crime law, so their assailant Martin Blackwell won't be charged with a hate crime, though he allegedly told them, "Get out of my house with all that gay," after the attack. According to a police report, Blackwell told officers, "They were stuck together like two hot dogs … so I poured a little hot water on them and help them out […] They’ll be alright. It was just a little hot water.” In fact, they suffered severe burns that required skin grafts and are still in physical therapy and counseling. Gooden was placed in a medically-induced coma for several weeks, and Tolbert has to wear compression garments for two years to help him heal. The couple has a GoFundMe page to raise money for their medical treatment.
The boys discuss why making the world a better place isn't your responsibility or theirs. Racial tensions flair in a Joe's Crab Shack. Napster creator to make movie theater goers very happy. A long awaited argument unfolds as well.
This week, we warm up for our regular episode by talking about the terror attacks in Paris, TD Bank, Veterans Day, video games, the Smithsonian Museum, dead Kermits, teaching your kid the wrong stuff, and whether or not to tip at Joe’s Crab Shack. It’s all right here on the PREGAME!
On this week's episode there's a whole lot of stuff! What kind of stuff? Well, we talk a little about the new Fallout 4! There's a Kickstarter aimed at bringing us new episodes of MST3K, but we're a little wary. It looks like there may be a fast and easy form of male birth control by 2017! Is tipping on it's way out? Joe's Crab Shack seems to think so! There's a whole lot of controversy over Starbuck's new Winter cups! ...or is there? All this plus our Wi-Five of the Week! See, I said there was a lot of stuff!
