Talk about momentum! Last week the council approved the $321 million project to develop the railyards with a stadium & concert venue. And now this week the revitalization of Old Sacramento's waterfront
This coming Saturday COULD be the last day of business for one of Old Sacramento's most respected restaurants, the Rio City Cafe. Owner's Stephanie and Mark Miller put in their 30-day notice after the restaurant's popular river deck was shut down by the city because of safety concerns. Here's where this story picks up....
What the attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump says about political violence. How California is struggling to ensure guest workers have safe housing. Finally, Evangeline's in Old Sac celebrates 50 years of business. Trump Assassination Attempt and Political Violence The attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump at a rally in Pennsylvania is not the first instance of political violence in the United States. But nearly one-third of Americans believe such violence is justified. Dr. Garen Wintemute, emergency medicine physician and Director of the California Firearm Violence Research Center joins Insight to talk about the implications of political violence, and what the weekend's shooting could mean for the country's future. California Guest Worker Housing Violations is a CalMatters California Divide Reporter covering inequality. Her latest piece found that the number of agricultural guest workers has risen dramatically in California. But state regulators have struggled to ensure that farms are providing safe housing to their workers. Felicia is joined by Antonio Bravo, an agricultural guest worker from Mexico who detailed unsafe conditions while working in Salinas. CalMatters is a nonprofit newsroom that partners with public media stations across the state. Evangeline's Turns 50 A famous gift and costume shop in Old Sacramento is celebrating 50 years of business this year. Evangeline's Costume Mansion first opened in 1974, and has provided generations of Sacramentans with eccentric novelties, toys, Halloween costumes and more. Evangeline's owner Deborah Chaussé talks about the story's history, and how they're celebrating this anniversary throughout July.
Old Sacramento is known as Sacramento's "Front Porch." The entire sector is protected as a National Landmark and for good reason. Much of California's early history is seated here. The town saw immense growth during the California Gold Rush and with that came death as well. Cholera epidemics swept through and fire and floods destroyed the place more than once. Old Sacramento had to be raised eighteen feet to prevent flooding, leaving behind underground tunnels. These tunnels are said to be filled with spirits and several of the historic buildings that still remain have unexplained activity. Join us as we explore the history and hauntings of Old Sacramento. The Moment in Oddity features the FLIP Research Vessel and This Month in History features the Cuyohoga River Fire. Our location was suggested by Brian Pertl. California's newest state park is named Dos Rios in Stanislaus County. Also, the U.S. Supreme Court heard arguments in a pivotal case about homelessness. Finally, an exhibit about the unique history of women and tattoos in Old Sacramento. New State Park ‘Dos Rios' in Stanislaus County California's newest state park Dos Rios will open on June 12 in Stanislaus County. Located along the Tuolumne and San Joaquin rivers about eight miles west of Modesto in the Central Valley, it's the first state park acquired since 2014. California State Parks Director Armando Quintero joins Insight with more about what the public can expect to see, what is still being developed, the input from tribal communities, as well as how this floodplain restoration project will restore habitat for threatened and endangered wildlife. Supreme Court Hears Landmark Homelessness Case The U.S. Supreme Court is expected to hear arguments Monday on what some are calling the most important case about homelessness in decades: Johnson v. Grants Pass. The case comes from a 2018 lawsuit challenging an ordinance approved by the small city in Southern Oregon that made it illegal for unhoused residents to camp on public property in the city. A ruling is not expected until June, but the case could have wide-ranging implications. Leslie Gielow Jacobs is an Anthony Kennedy Professor at McGeorge School of Law and joins us with a breakdown of Monday's oral arguments. Marisa Kendall is a Homelessness Reporter for CalMatters and explains the arguments on both sides. Marisa also provides a breakdown of a recent state audit which found that California fails to track its homelessness spending or results. Women Tattoo Exhibit at Sac History Museum An ongoing exhibit at the Sacramento History Museum called Tattooed & Tenacious chronicles the stories of tattooed women throughout California's history. The museum's Executive Director Delta Pick Mello and Experience Manager Alexandra Kowalski talk about the exhibit - which continues until July 28 - as well as how it coincides with Photography Month Sacramento.
Join the conversation as your host, Natalie Mariani-Kling delves into Sacramento history by talking with Kevin Fat, a 3rd generation member of the Frank Fat's Restaurant Group family. Frank Fat's in downtown Sacramento stands as the oldest family owned restaurant in the city, having opened in 1939 and still being owned and run by members of the Fat family. Kevin talks about the history of Fat's, how his grandfather first came to America from China at age 16 and even with a language barrier, his personality, integrity and love of people helped him forge relationships that would help him open his namesake restaurant. Little did he know his restaurant, which opened in a neighborhood akin to skid row, would become populated by all the politicians and movers and shakers in Sacramento decade after decade. Kevin also shares the role his mother, Lina, had in growing the family business into multiple restaurants and becoming the Executive Chef of Fat City Bar and Cafe and China Camp. The latter helping to revitalize Old Sacramento. Her self-taught culinary skills left an indelible mark on the menus.Today Kevin oversees Fat's three current restaurants, Frank Fat's and two locations of Fat's Asian Bistro and Dim Sum Bar in Folsom and Roseville. On May 27th, 2023, history was made as N-MEN: THE UNTOLD STORY pulled the covers on a hidden part of Sacramento, and skateboarding history. Written, produced and directed by James Sweigert, this film puts Sacramento skateboarding on the map and gives long overdue credit to the N-Men, a 1975 response to the Z-Boys from Dogtown. Synopsis: In 1975 a diverse crew of Sacramento skateboarders met at a paved embankment underneath the I-5 freeway in Old Sacramento. They had no idea their underground movement would have a global impact on the world of skateboarding. 11 years in the making, this film gives us a raw, intimate look inside the N-Men, a Sacramento skateboard crew who have grown into an all encompassing family throughout Northern California and beyond. Several of these men and women went on to become world champion skateboarders. The film explores the N-Men's influence on the greatest skateboarders of the past 50 years and their contribution to competitive skateboarding including creating the X-Games for ESPN and having played a part in collaborating with Tony Hawk to get skateboarding into the Olympics for the first time in 2021. Their story has never been told, until now. The film features a treasure chest of never-before-seen footage and photos of the Northern California skate scene which the filmmaker spent a decade mining out of basements, attics and garages. The film features voice over from actor Josh Brolin, also executive producer, and features interviews with professional skateboarders including Tony Hawk, Tony Alva, Christian Hosoi, Stev Caballero and many more Cheryl Bryant Bruce M.D. (thecelebritydoc.net)

This is the one of the versions for the old-time Tune of the Week, differing from the famous Uncle Dave Macon song. My arrangement comes from Erich Schroeder (BHO's vrteach). I wish he was still active here and I really enjoyed learning a tune from his recording. The title, as we learn in the discussion thread, is probably not the real one. But if it were to be, I'm reminded of Old Sacramento where you walk on the historic old plank road as you visit the shops and museums and go on the old Delta King steamboat on the Sacramento River. At least, I nostalgically hope we can still do that....

Some things just fit into place when it comes to podcasting. Kind of like how you can easily snap together a pile of Legos into a nifty completed construction project. This week J.J. learns more about how to do just that with new accessible tools that will make him a Master Builder in no time with Matthew Shifrin , a consultant from Lego. There is also a ton of news, a few long time listeners in "Sound Off" and the "Last Word" is for the dogs. Look through your blocks for that elusive small blue two studded piece, it was just in our hands a minute ago we swear, while consuming BBQ 192. That could be a really daunting task if you didn't have guidance or a great set of instructions on how to go about the act of building your architectural wonder. Matthew Shifrin, Consultant with Lego, tells J.J. about his enjoyment of building things out of blocks with his family and how that grew into his desire to share that process with others. Listen as Mathew explains how a family friend provided him with a large box with hand-embossed Braille instructions on how to create a castle. And how that experience aided him in showing the team at Lego how they could improve the ability for future Master Builders out there to construct their own creations. Also, venture over to Matthew's Legos For The Blind website to learn more about his Lego sets Matthew is involved with other aspirational projects including Project Daredevil which seeks to provide immersive experiences using the body in ways that have not been realized before. Tip: Turn Off Automatic Updates Apple releasing iOS13, and the soon to be released on September 24th dot 1 update, might not be worth the effort as both releases have some hefty bugs. Sure, you can roll back to iOS 12, but remember Apple locks out the ability to do so not too long from the release of a new version of iOS. Sometimes it is just better to let others work out the problems while you wait for a verified stable version to come down from Apple Park. Head to Settings, General and then Software Update. From there look for the option to turn off automatic updates. Now repeat these same steps when you are ready to get your desired upgrade. Also, you may want to do the same in the App Store. Joe told the story about having Instacart broken for 72 hours while the company worked to fix the Voiceover compatibility they broke in one of their recent changes to the app. If your iDevice is your primary way of interacting with the world... you should do this to ensure that you don't lose your access to critical apps and settings. Sound Off: Our first email is from Rebecca Skipper. "I loved the last three episodes, but I have a lot to say. I had a very hard time using CBS All Access on IOS or TVOS due to unlabeled buttons. I was able to sign in and watch Star Trek Discovery using Firefox and Amazon Prime. You can watch CBS All Access content through Amazon Prime. I am really annoyed at the fact that we can t get audio description right now for CBS All Access! I put up with this because I am a Star Trek fan, but I want every series and movie described! The issue with Dominos really disappoints me, and I do not understand why companies can t treat customers and potential employees as individuals who are fully capable of working for them or buying their products. I ve read lots of articles recently suggesting that a company s branding and bottom line improves when they are dedicated to diversity and inclusion. We should keep in mind that there are more people with invisible disabilities so we shouldn t just focus on the obvious physical disabilities. I m glad we have devices left with the home button and fingerprint censor, but I am disappointed with the McDonaldization of the cell phone market. It seems to me that Apple is telling us what we will get rather than giving us choices! I m sticking to my SE for as long as I can an have an iPhone 7 as a backup. I still like Apple because of Voiceover, and I even have an iPod Touch because of the headphone jack. This doesn t mean that I will go out there and buy a phone I don t want. In my view, Microsoft does a much better job in promoting consumer choice. I think the visually impaired community has a responsibility to support disability friendly businesses and products when possible. This is why I will stick with Microsoft and Apple even with my disappointment over no refresh on the iPhone SE. Rebecca Skipper" Juan had a little convention feedback and information on Ride Hailing outside the U.S.. "Hello Blind Bargains, Once again thanks for an amazing podcast. I really enjoyed the convention wrap up show. I enjoyed hearing about how things happened at the conventions, like how you needed to press a button to make the elevator's talk, or how you had to go to an underground parking garage to get Uber. When I went to Mexico, Uber is an option, but you cannot get it right outside of airports or some hotels, as these places have their own taxi services, and if you do want to get Uber, you must go across the street. Also, here in California, we have the chirps And coocoos, which are sometimes confusing to understand street light direction, and we also have streets with other sounds. In Woodland, my home town we have to press the button for more than five seconds to invoke the sound guidance, which can maybe burn or freeze your hand. I think the street sounds should be more understandable to everyone, and say which street you are crossing out loud. I wanted to ask you, when downloading NVDA will it come with all the add ons from past versions, like dictation bridge or do you have to remember to download these separately? Also, , can someone script NVDA to work with proprietary apps in a job setting? I also wanted to mention about the last word, that when I go buy a burger to go, I like reaching to the bottom of the bag and finding extra french fries. Also, in Old Sacramento; a tourist section of Sacramento, they used to have a tradition in one of the popcorn shops where they will give you a crumb bag. They would make bags out of the bottom of the popcorn pile, and sell it to people for $.75. I am not sure if they still do this. Keep up the good work! Thank you, Sincerely, Juan Manuel Avila" Keep the NVDA Blog bookmarked to learn more about the changes on the way in the upcoming 2019.3 update. Next, Stan Littrell dares to mention the spice that has no name for J.J.. "a couple comments on your latest bbq Since Envision AI was selling at a 75 percent discount over the regular lifetime buyout price I decided to make a purchase. I would never even get a subscription before this. I feel that this app represents just one more tool to put in the tool box. I still use Seeing AI for certain tasks. I think that Envision AI is a great up and comer to have in the tool kit. I still enjoy using the Galaxy IDMate for barcode scanning because it is easier to line up and find the barcodes. Since I already have the ID Mate it doesn't make sense not to use it. I use these other apps for testing purposes. I like the fact that we have options that we can use. We are now in everything pumpkin pie spice mode. I love pumpkin pie but I don't think that I will ever understand pumpkin pie spice flavored spam. That sounds so nasty." It's grilling season! I love grilling burgers, hot dogs, chicken and my personal favorite, ribs! I love being in the hot sun hanging out and having a beer with my friends. But you must know that in order for you to be a grill master, you must take responsibility. Such as: clean your grill, make sure the food is prepped properly and teach others about grilling. For those who are a spectator when it comes to grilling, please know that there are certain rules that apply. There is an etiquette that you must understand and respect. Unfortunately, my sister has no idea what grilling etiquette is about. Listen to this episode and you'll understand. There is an unprecedented surge of first-time female candidates, running for political office nationwide in Election Year 2018. But here in California, the bluest state of them all, women candidates are still hitting a wall. Women account for only 26 of the 120 state legislators -- and they actually lost seats in the past two elections. In a round of caucus meetings back in January, Democratic Party activists in three competitive Southern California House races overlooked EMILY’s List-endorsed candidates and threw their support, by wide margins, to men. Even after the #MeToo movement, female candidates in California are still forced to contend with lots of disadvantages — fewer political connections, competitors with higher profiles, a lack of desire for bare-knuckle politics, and supporters unaccustomed to writing women large checks. But the 2016 election has energized women in unprecedented numbers to step up to run - what will the results be in 2018? We met at Arcade Underground in Old Sacramento to talk with two women running for political office, and two women who recruit and train novice candidates. They explained the upsides and challenges for women candidates running in California, what has changed for better and for worse after Election 2016, and what they predict will happen in this current election year. PANELISTS * Regina Bateson - Democratic candidate for Congress in California’s 4th Congressional District * Kula Koenig - president of the Sacramento chapter of Black Women Organized for Political Action * Rachel Michelin - executive director of California Women Lead * Amanda Renteria - former aide to Diane Feinstein, Hillary Clinton and Xavier Becerra who is running for Governor of California PODCAST PLAY-BY-PLAY * O to 4:25 min - Intro to California Groundbreakers * 4:25 min - Panelists introduce themselves -- and talk about the women who inspired to get them into government and politics * 10:50 min - What made Amanda Renteria decide to enter the Governor's race at the very last minute * 13:25 min - Why Regina Bateson decided to stay in the race when the California Democratic Party chose not to endorse her * 16:35 min - Why California women lost legislative seats in the past few elections, and what their prospects are in 2018 * 21:40 min - Do women of color have political clout in California now? And what should the state's political parties be doing to get them into office? * 25:15 min - Women "making waves" while running for office - what is the significance of doing that in Election Year 2018? * 33:40 min - What are the pros and cons of being young, first-timer candidates in this race? And are they shaking up the "old guard" and "boys' club?" *44:05 min - How to bring young women into political campaigns and have them run as candidates * 47:25 min - How women can be outspoken but avoid verbally stepping into political brouhahas * 50:15 min - How first-time candidates can get their message heard when running for any political office is expensive * 57:35 min - What was the lowest point during your political career that shook you to the core, and how did you bounce back? * 1 hr, 3:40 min - How do you fire up politically-apathetic youngsters to vote, let alone run for office? * 1 hr, 12:10 min - How to make sure the surge of women running for office isn't just a trend but instead a change that lasts for the long run

Brian Johnston discusses how to impact our culture with the message of life. He’s joined by Joe Langfeld of Human Life Alliance. Human Life Alliance provides excellent cultural impact communication tools for people everywhere to use where they see fit. It’s very good to have spoken to Joe about culture and how Human Life Alliance is addressing the culture and communicating in an image inclined world of memes. What an excellent resource they are. It's important to understand the nature of culture. Brian lives on the banks of the Sacramento River. It's the largest river in the state of California. Where the Sacramento river is joined by the American, at the confluence of those two rivers, is where the town of Sacramento was founded. That's because it was the farthest inland you could actually come up from the sea, through the bay, and come inland with a seagoing ship to Old Sacramento. Culture is a lot like a river. Culture flows. It is the result of contributing factors and streams that are upstream. Little rivulets go to little rivers, to bigger rivers. Creeks, tributaries contribute to a larger river and that's the case in your culture. These rivulet sometimes are contaminated. But sometimes they're very, very pure and I want you to understand that cultures are also that way. There are things in our culture that aren't good for you and you know that. But the most important aspect of this stream, this river we live by and where we draw water from - our culture, is the fact that it has banks. That's what defines the river. Now at times it may overflow its banks but those banks will, once the waters have receded, reemerge. The banks of the river define and delimit the river. The banks for a culture are the laws of a culture. In 1973, the Supreme Court threw out the laws regarding abortion. Every state in the nation had protective laws for those babies but the Supreme Court threw them all out. The laws are critically important. Laws define your culture. If you care about human beings and the cultural values we want to establish to protect those who are the seemingly insignificant - if you know that they are indeed significant, then you need to pay attention to the laws. The laws are there to help protect the flow of culture, to make sure that it doesn't over run its banks and destroy people and lives and property. That's really what happens when laws are broken. That's what happens literally here in Sacramento if these levees break or are overtopped. It brings great harm. So it is true with our laws. Our laws are there to protect and this being an election year, I want to remind you - wherever you are in the nation to go to: nrlca.org because National Right to Life pays attention to these laws on the federal, on the state and on the local level. Here you can find your state's affiliate. It is important because it allows you to be involved in building up the banks of our culture, building up the levees, building up the protective nature of what's flowing through our lives so that people are not harmed. We have to pay attention to the laws. We have to pay attention to politics. You may not believe it but, just a handful of votes turns many elections and that is much more common on the local level from city council or supervisors in the county to the school boards. Planned Parenthood targets school boards. Very often it's a school district’s policies that determine whether they give access to the children. So it is very important in this election year to get involved with National Right to Life to make sure that the protections that need to be in place for our culture and the way to do that is to understand the need for good and just laws and understand your need for civic involvement. I mentioned the school board because if you get involved in local school boards and find out who the pro-life candidates are, who wins sometimes by 5 or 10 votes, are some of the smallest jurisdiction in your state. Everyone who votes for pro-life school board members is going to vote for a pro-life city council member and anyone who votes for those two is going to vote for the pro life County Supervisor and for the pro-life State Assembly and State Senate and for the pro-life candidate for Congress and pro-life candidate for governor and yes for the pro-life federal offices all the way to the president. So by getting involved in helping your community be aware of the cultural war and the cultural values and being aware that they can make a difference where they are, that the laws are important, the laws are the banks of the cultural river. You can make a difference right where you are go to nrlc.org.
This discussion was recorded on November 30, 2017. We partnered up with the Crocker Art Museum for its "Conversations that Matter" series to have a conversation about the future of the neighborhood that surrounds it -- Downtown Sacramento. It has been a little more than a year since the Golden 1 Center opened. The arena brought in a host of hot-ticket concerts and kicked off a slew of new development around it. Next up: development of the Railyards, revitalizing the riverfront, and making Old Sacramento more of a draw for the locals. But what are the plans for housing? For handling the homeless issue? For turning the still-too-many stretches of derelict buildings into something more pleasant? For parking and public transit? And making sure Downtown doesn't turn into an overpriced playground only a few can afford to enjoy? We're talking in the Crocker Museum's Friedman Court with a group of people in charge of handling these issues about what has changed in Downtown Sacramento, what has improved and what still needs work. PANELISTS * John Dangberg, assistant city manager for the City of Sacramento - he was the city's top person in charge of the Golden 1 Center's construction project, and now is focusing on more redevelopment of Downtown and development of the Railyards. * Brooksie Hughes, Old Sacramento District Director for the Downtown Sacramento Partnership - she's tasked with making Old Sacramento a more hip, happening place where locals equal, or even outnumber, out-of-town visitors. * Bay Miry - vice-president of development for D&S Development - first he helped turn R Street into one of the city's hottest nightlife destinations, now he's turning a section of K Street from eyesore to gateway to Golden 1 Center. * Richard Rich - Railyards and Riverfront project manager for the City of Sacramento - a former "imagineer" for the Walt Disney Company, he's turning his imagination toward how Sacramento can revitalize the riverfront. We're running a monthly series called "Food for Thought," in-depth conversations with groundbreakers who run farms, restaurants, wineries, breweries and bars around California and are shaking up the way we eat and drink. Our second talk is with a couple of "empire builders" in the region's restaurant scene: Chris Jarosz of Broderick Roadhouse fame and Garrett Van Vleck, one of the partners in the Shady Lady crew. Neither of them are top chefs or award-winning bartenders, but they sure know how to build brands and turn concepts into drink and dining hotspots. Listen to Jarosz and Van Vleck talk about how their pasts, presents and futures, where they're rolling out the next phases of their dining empires, and how they manage all these places without losing their sanity. An affordable housing project for seniors in San Francisco's Mission District was just taken to court. Affordable housing for low-income residents in Orange County was waylaid for several months. And a homeless shelter for teenagers originally planned for San Francisco's Marina District had to move elsewhere. They're just a few examples of how the California Environmental Quality Act, or CEQA, is used as a way to block housing and other types of development. But CEQA’s defenders say the landmark law, passed in 1970, has given California cleaner air, less congestion and sewage, and made it a more desirable place to live. Home developers say that, depending where you are in the California, the onorous fees, codes and CEQA-specific reviews mean they pay at least $50,000 before even putting a shovel in the ground. So do we love CEQA for keeping California from being congested and over-built? Do we champion it as it is because it gives people the power to block development they want? Or should we tell state government to reform CEQA or even scrap it? This is the final part of our Crazy Housing Market Series, held on April 28 in the basement of Graciano's Speakeasy in Old Sacramento which, based on CEQA regulations, maybe wouldn't get the go-ahead for construction today. PANELISTS * Tom Buford, senior planner with the City of Sacramento * Chris Norem, director of government and legislative affairs at the North State Building Industry Association * Howard Penn, executive director of the Planning and Conservation League * Tina Thomas, founder of the Thomas Law Group in Sacramento and original co-author of the environmental-law textbook "Guide to the California Environmental Quality Act" PODCAST TIMEFRAME O to 5:15 min - Intro to California Groundbreakers 5:15 min - Panelists introduce themselves 11:15 min - The layman's description of CEQA, how it works, and what it covers? 14:40 min - How does CEQA affect housing? 16:15 min - What real estate developers and homebuilders think about CEQA, and how they want it to change 20 min - An environmentalist's POV of CEQA and how it should change/not change 26 min - How CEQA has shaped the City of Sacramento, and how it's shaping its future landscape 31:55 min - How does our CEQA act compare and contrast to what other states and the Feds have on the books 34 min - The process for how anyone can file a CEQA-related lawsuit 46:20 min - Does CEQA affect where developers build, and not build? 47:40 min - How CEQA has turned into an industry 49:25 min - How can cities and developers create accurate Environmental Impact Reports on empty plots of land? 1 hr, 1:25 min - How Mayor Darrell Steinberg has affected CEQA and made changes to it 1 hr, 15:15 min - How are local jurisdictions doing in streamlining CEQA 1 hr, 24:25 min - What's the sweet spot for CEQA being streamlined, and the public still having their say?
We've got Old Sacramento and now the Barn, but what else do we have along the Sacramento River? Why can't we have the hike/bike trails, the boat launches, the water taxis, and work/live/play options along the waterfront? Both West Sacramento and the City of Sacramento say they're making waterfront revitalization a priority, but what's do-able and what's not? For our second event at The Barn in West Sacramento on September 22, we asked questions to people who know the Sacramento River well about what's in the works for the short term -- and what needs a lot of work to happen in the long term -- on both sides of the riverfront.
