The Martian (2015) review lands on Born to Watch this week as Whitey, Gow and Will blast off to Mars for Ridley Scott's hugely entertaining tale of survival, science, potatoes and one very unlucky astronaut. The Movie Review Podcast, where we do not take the movies or ourselves too seriously, is tackling one of the most rewatchable science-fiction films of the last decade, starring Matt Damon as Mark Watney, a man forced to do what none of us could possibly manage: stay alive on Mars using his brains, determination and an alarming amount of human fertiliser.Directed by Ridley Scott and adapted from Andy Weir's novel, The Martian starts with a simple but brutal premise. During a mission to Mars, astronaut Mark Watney is struck during a violent storm, presumed dead and left behind as the rest of his crew evacuates the planet. One problem: Watney isn't dead.Now stranded millions of kilometres from Earth, he has limited food, no immediate way to communicate with NASA and years to wait before another mission could possibly reach him.Easy.The boys dive into why The Martian works so well despite essentially being Cast Away on Mars. Matt Damon has to carry huge sections of the film alone, yet Watney never becomes boring. He is smart, vulnerable, funny and constantly solving problems, usually just before another problem arrives and threatens to kill him.That's one of the things Whitey loves most about the movie. Watney doesn't magically get everything right. Things go wrong. Calculations fail. Equipment breaks. Plans collapse. Every solution seems to create another problem, giving the film an authenticity that keeps the tension alive.Will has recently read Andy Weir's novel, so we also get into the differences between page and screen. The book dives much deeper into the science behind Watney's survival and adds context for how qualified he is to handle the mechanical and botanical challenges thrown his way.Then there is that cast.Jessica Chastain, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Jeff Daniels, Kristen Wiig, Sean Bean, Michael Peña, Kate Mara, Sebastian Stan, Benedict Wong and Donald Glover help turn what could have been a one-man survival story into something much bigger.The boys have different picks when it comes to the standout performances, with Damon naturally getting plenty of love, while Jeff Daniels and Chiwetel Ejiofor also come in for some serious praise. Donald Glover might arrive late, but he certainly makes an impression.The episode also asks whether The Martian might represent the last truly great Ridley Scott movie. That opens the door to a run-through of Scott's extraordinary career, from Alien and Blade Runner through Gladiator, Black Hawk Down and American Gangster, before looking at some of his more recent efforts.Then there is the music.For a bloke trapped on another planet, Watney has access to plenty of tunes; unfortunately for him, Commander Lewis appears to have left him with a collection heavily weighted towards disco. It becomes one of the movie's best running jokes and naturally gives Born to Watch plenty to work with.The Good, the Bad and the Ugly gets into everything from Damon's performance and Watney's relentless problem-solving to the genuinely stressful HAB sequence, NASA's decision-making and a couple of moments where the science-fiction starts leaning a little more heavily on the fiction.The film also sparks plenty of discussion for its surprisingly positive outlook. Rather than turning Watney's rescue into a simple American hero story, The Martian becomes a global effort. And we've gotten to see some of them. We start with "The Weight" which is an action drama starring Ethan Hawke and Russell Crowe. Bill Bregoli saw it and he'll tell you all about it. Then we've got "Wild Horse NIne" which has been burning up the film festival circuit. It's got Sam Rockwell and John Malkovich as CIA agents hanging around Easter Island. Bill McCuddy will fill you in. Neil Rosen will tell you about "New York: A Documentary Film" which is from director Ric Burns and is on PBS. We also talk about the new seasons of "Slow Horses" and "The Gentlemen." And we've got another serious film called "Fjord" staring Sebastian Stan. September is just around the corner and with the start of the new month comes the fall film festival circuit. Taylor Antrim served as a guest host on today's episode and was joined by fellow Vogue editors and cinephiles Liam Hess and Lisa Wong Macabasco. They discussed the slate of fall film festivals ahead. Liam will be attending Venice—the first and most glamorous of the bunch—and then Taylor and Lisa will both be headed to Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) as well as New York Film Festival (NYFF). “We do get the opportunity sometimes to see some of these festival films before they come out in the festivals because they're trying to drum up support from Vogue and other, other outlets,” Taylor explained. As such, they began their conversation by shouting out some of the films they've already had the chance to see. First on that list was the New York centric film Paper Tiger, by James Gray starring Adam Driver, Miles Teller, and Scarlett Johansson. “There's a lot of wigs and suits and accents that are a little over the top,” Lisa noted of the thriller that takes places in Queens, New York in the eighties. After watching the film, Taylor found himself asking his group chats “Is Adam Driver a great actor or not?” The cohort weighed in on this quandary.  They weighed in on All of A Sudden, Ryusuke Hamaguchi's French language debut, Fjord, Cristian Mungiu's legal thriller starring podcast favorite Renate Reinsve and Sebastian Stan,  Hope, an action film starring two-time Vogue cover star Ho-yeon, and Gentle Monster, a vehicle for an incredible performance from Léa Seydoux. In a final lightning round, they each shared the two films they are most excited to see at the festivals. For Liam, he is looking forward to catching Possible Love by Lee Chang-dong and Primetime, a striking portrayal of television host Chris Hansen. Lisa is excited for Bucking Fastard, starring the Mara sisters as twins, and Misty Green, Chris Rock's directorial return promising a commentary about race in Hollywood. Taylor rounded it out with Ink from Danny Boyle, a biographical film about Rupert Murdoch's acquisition of The Sun, and Magazine, an indie pick from Vogue contributor Alexandra Pechman.  Also on today's episode, Chloe is joined by Marley Marius to talk about the big news of the week: the reported return of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle to the UK. Sebastian Stan confirmed he is playing Harvey Dent in The Batman Part II during a French press interview about Avengers: Doomsday. While not officially confirmed by Marvel, the news broke via a social media post from March 26, that is just now gaining notice, with the actor himself telling Instagram user @comicconmomsi, "I can tell you that...I start work on the next one in a couple of months, I can tell you that," in a video message. That tracks with the projected August production starting date for Secret Wars we've discussed previously.While rumors and speculation are typically not our forte here, the rumor mill surrounding The Batman II cast warrants some attention. In May, we discussed headlines from sources like Variety and The Wrap that seemingly confirmed Sebastian Stan had been cast as Harvey Dent, as he had long been rumored to be, with Scarlett Johansson and Charles Dance announced as Dent's wife and father, respectively. In hindsight, those headlines resulted from Matt Reeve's social media post where he confirmed and welcomed a number of actors as part of the film but did not actually reveal any roles. The review embargo lifted today for The Mandalorian and Grogu, and the bag is more than a little mixed. Critics are either praising the film for its fun action adventure nature of the bounty hunter and his foundling or others are saying the film does not live up to the iconography that Lucasfilm and Star Wars is known for as well as having too small of a story for the big screen. With this being the first Star Wars film in seven years, a lot is likely riding on the performance of Din Djarin and Din Grogu. Ebon Moss-Bachrach has been quietly dishing details on not only Avengers: Doomsday but Secret Wars across his various media appearances in recent days. On Josh Horowitz's Happy Sad Confused podcast, the Thing actor admitted the Doomsday script he read didn't have a finished third act saying, "I don't think it had an ending,” and described the production as so compartmentalized and "interstellar" that he'd repeatedly go back to Joe Russo to have the multiverse threading re-explained. Then in a separate chat with the Dog Day Afternoon Broadway team, a play based on the 1975 film the actor is performing in, he casually dropped that Secret Wars filming kicks off in August 2026, right after his stage run wraps in mid-July.HBO set August 16 as the premiere date for Lanterns and dropped a new trailer that complicates the show's dark, earth-based mystery pitch with shots of Kyle Chandler's Hal Jordan in the classic Green Lantern uniform and what appears to be an off-world setting. The trailer also confirms Nathan Fillion is reprising his role as Guy Gardner and reveals Laura Linney in an undisclosed part opposite Aaron Pierre's John Stewart. Matt Reeves used a series of X posts last week to officially welcome Brian Tyree Henry and Sebastian Koch to Gotham for The Batman: Part II. They join the previously confirmed additions of Scarlett Johansson as Gilda Dent, Sebastian Stan as Harvey Dent, and Charles Dance as Harvey's father Christopher. Henry, a Marvel alum from Eternals who also memorably appeared in 2019's Joker, marks his second trip into the DC sandbox, while Koch is known for his prestige work appearing in films like Bridge of Spies. Michael continued another strong run at the box office this weekend and has now crossed $700 million dollars worldwide while the Devil Wears Prada 2 also continued its solid streak, crossing the $500 million dollar mark internationally. Mortal Kombat 2 crossed the $100 million dollar mark in its second weekend. Horror film Obsession opened very well with $23 million dollars worldwide, a big opening for a film from a first time director acquired out of a film festival. Marvel is making some changes to leadership in its comics division. The company has promoted Brad Winderbaum, already its chief of television and animation, to head of Marvel television, animation, comics and franchise. At the same time, David Abdo, former manager of Disney's music division, will transition to serve as Marvel's general manager, comics and franchise, reporting to Winderbaum. With the new top leadership coming in, that means that Dan Buckley, the longtime Marvel Comics head, is departing. Buckley will remain at Marvel through mid-2027 to support the leadership transition.HBO's Harry Potter series will already be recasting a role as production begins on season 2. Actress Gracie Cochrane, who portrays Ginny Weasley in the upcoming season 1 will not return for Season 2 of the series due to 'unforeseen circumstances,' Cochrane and her family revealed in a statement.Disney+ has begun development on Ella Enchanted, a TV series based on the 2004 Miramax fairytale film of the same name that starred Anne Hathaway, who will return to produce the series. Anyone But You writer Ilana Wolpert will serve as showrunner.A final look trailer for Prime's Spider-Noir, starring Nicholas Cage, was dropped today.

There's a lot on the line this year with Avengers: Doomsday, so the franchise giant must see the sense in returning to their iconic presentation time and space. The haunting trailer shows the titular character and flashes of violence happening to and around him. We're also getting the whole Harvey Dent family in The Batman II with legendary actor Charles Dance in talks to play Harvey's father. Dance is known for his role as Tywin Lannister on Game of Thrones and joins a powerful family with Sebastian Stan and Scarlett Johansson already slated to play Harvey and Gilda Dent, respectively.
