In this very special episode, Donna reunites with her longtime friend – actor, singer, and advocate Paul Petersen! Paul joins Donna and Dr Adam to reminisce about his role on The Donna Reed Show, talk with Donna about their decades-long friendship and to tell listeners about the important work of his organization, "A Minor Consideration", founded to protect the welfare of young performers. You will not want to miss this very special reunion! Paul Petersen was one of the biggest teen idols of the ‘50s and ‘60s. He started his career as a Mouseketeer on The Mickey Mouse Club and played alongside Sophia Loren and Cary Grant in the film "Houseboat", playing Cary Grant's son. From there, he took on his star-making role as Jeff Stone on The Donna Reed Show (1958-1966). Hit records “My Dad” and “She Can't Find Her Keys” followed, and he even wrote a series of spy-adventure novels! Paul was a good friend and confidant to Donna during her '60s career, escorting her to various events including the Deb Star Ball, and they supported each other through the turbulence that can come with having a teen career. It was Paul's empathy for the plight of child stars, having been one himself, that led to his founding "A Minor Consideration" in 1991, an organization that supports young performers and advocates for legislation to protect them while they work in the entertainment industry.

Want to hear a big number? How about $3.8 billion. That's the amount of crypto that hackers managed to steal last year. That's a new record. The company behind that report, Chainalysis, also found that one specific hacking group was responsible for a huge chunk of that stolen crypto. If you guessed that hacking group was Lazarus, connected to North Korea, you'd be correct.  Lazarus allegedly stole $1.7bn in 2022, compared with only $400 million worth of crypto the year before. It further solidifies the notion that North Koreans are likely using the cryptocurrency sector as a way to raise funds in the face of international sanctions.  But what does all of this mean for the crypto market? And what can we do to prevent more hacks from happening? Bloomberg reporter Jeff Stone joins this episode.  Listen to Bloomberg Crypto on the iHeartRadio App, Apple Podcasts or  Spotify. What can I say about Paul Peterson. He was one of the most engaging, forthright and entertaining interviews we have done. This one is a must listen! From meeting Walt Disney and being one of the first few Mouskateers to becoming the star of a number one ranked television show and having a top 10 hit on the Billboard charts, Paul Peterson has done and seen it all. In addition, he has written several books that tell the story of child actors in the early days and the abuse they endured. He created an organization called “A Minor Consideration” that brings their plight to light. Paul played Jeff Stone, son of Dr. Alex and Donna Stone on The Donna Reed Show in the late 50's and early 60's. The Reed Show was only on for 8 seasons but was a ratings hit for the then young ABC television network. Although very similar to other sitcoms of the day, The Donna Reed Show was also different. Consider the fact that Donna WORKED! Gasp…what is this world coming to. She was a nurse on the show. But with a cast like Carl Betz, Paul Peterson and Shelley Farbares it was destined for success. Listen to our interview with Paul and hear how he launched a singing career and ended up with a hit record. “My Dad” went to #6 for Paul while Shelley's hit “Johnny Angel” made for two teen idols on the same show!! Paul touches on all this and more in our 30 minute interview. He is fascinating and talented and the backstage trivia he gives us is well worth the “Wait, I Know This” seal of approval. Take a listen and let us know your thoughts. We will most definitely have Paul back later to talk more about his work with child actor rights.

Looking back on 2018, the largest issue of the year was the series of floods that damaged the North Shore, a small neighborhood in Koloa on the south side, and Anahola. Eight months later, those communities are still recovering from that incident. In fact, on January 3, the new mayor issued the sixth iteration of an emergency proclamation, which extends the flood-relief process. Part of that emergency rule prohibits the operation of transient vacation rentals on the north side of the island in the Lumahai, Wainiha, and Haena areas in particular. For the folks on the northern side of the island that depend on their vacation rental revenue, it’s a very challenging time. On the flip side, the new county government seems to be strongly focused on not only housing, but also on clamping down on the enforcement of illegal vacation rentals. Recently, they issued a $130,000 fine to an operator by the Wailua River who’d been operating an illegal vacation rental. That in mind, if you’re thinking about buying property on Kauai with the intent of renting it as a short-term vacation property, I strongly encourage you to make sure it’s a legal vacation rental. One in eight homes on Kauai is a vacation rental, and the government sees that as something that contributes to the high price of housing and destroys our communities. I don’t necessarily agree with that. However, the county strategy is to become much stricter on enforcement. In terms of affordable housing, one of the ideas the mayor mentioned in his radio interview was of leasing county or state land to large developers so that they can defer those costs and bring in housing that’s much more affordable for the median income of Kauai households. As we move further into 2019, we still have three relatively new projects Down the South Shore, the folks from Brookfield continue to build out PiliMai, which are some of the nicest, most modern condos that run along the Kiahuna Golf Course. The 2-bedroom units there are running in the $700s, and the 3-bedroom units run in the $800s.  On the east side, DR Horton continues to build out their project in Honolulu, which provides some of the most affordable housing on the island in terms of new construction. These large 3- and 4-bedroom homes are in the $500,000 range, though they’re on small lots.  On the North Shore, we have the North Shore Preserve, which is a swath of land owned by Jeff Stone and the Principal Corporation. These are spectacular lots with one-of-a-kind, mind-boggling views of Hanalei Bay and Valley High. They will be selling for between $5 million and $6 million. Overall, this last year was very successful for tourism. For those with vacation rentals, tourism revenue was up 9.2%, the highest level in 25 years on Kauai. However, this does create the problem of over-tourism; there are more tourists here than our infrastructure can support. “The new county government seems to be strongly focused on not only housing, but also on clamping down on the enforcement of illegal vacation rentals.” The focus for the future will be on improving our roads and wastewater systems so as to be able to support more visitors, or else to find a way to minimize the number of visitors coming to the island. An example of that point is the airlift onto the island. In fact, Southwest Airlines launched its first certification airlines earlier in February; as soon as they’re finished with that process, you’ll be able to get affordable flights from Southwest. For those of you with Southwest frequent flyer miles, it might be a great opportunity to get an inexpensive or free trip to the islands. The county doesn’t really have control over that, which is part of the drive behind the county’s push to improve infrastructure, roads, and so on. These are some of the key issues relevant to us on the Garden Island. Hopefully you get to visit us soon! If you have any questions about local issues or about buying or selling real estate, please reach out to us. Our marvelous team would love to be of service to you. Aloha!

Teen heartthrob, actor, pop star, author, activist… what's struck me most about this man I’ve adored since childhood is what a lovely and fine human he is. Paul Petersen began his career as a Mouseketeer, then appeared in Houseboat with Sophia Loren and Cary Grant, achieving stardom playing Jeff Stone from 1958 to 1966 on The Donna Reed Show. A pop star as well, Paul had hit records with She Can't Find Her Keys, Amy, Lollipops and Roses, and My Dad. And boy do I have a story! Turning to writing when acting work became scarce, Paul published 7 novels in one year. An overachiever at everything's he's done. Following the suicide of former child star Rusty Hamer, Paul founded A Minor Consideration, to improve working conditions for child actors and to assist in the transition between working as a child actor and adult life, whether in acting or in other professions. Most recently, reaching out to Erin Moran, just prior to her death. Thanks to his efforts, innumerable lives have been changed... and, saved. This is one of my favorite conversations... ever, filled with wisdom and compassion. I respect and adore this man. Today our guest is actress/comedian Katie Nathan and she comes on to talk about figure skating’s most dramatic and unnecessary event, the infamous Tonya Harding-Nancy Kerrigan debacle! Tonya Harding conspired with her husband, Jeff Gillooly, to take Nancy Kerrigan out of the running to compete in the Olympics by whacking her above her right knee cap. The job was poorly done, Nancy recovered in 10 days and was able to compete in the Olympics and win the silver medal. Meanwhile, Tonya went on to compete in the Olympics too and had to perform along side Nancy while the feds were breathing done her neck to figure out what happened. Tonya buckled under pressure, made a big embarrassing show and finished in 8th. The world watched this whole thing go down in real time. What a weird, trashy world we live in! Tonya denies that she had any involvement in harming Nancy while Jeff Gillooly, now Jeff Stone, takes responsibility for his actions, assures Tonya was involved, along with his team of criminal buffoons, Shane Stant, Shawn Eckardt and Shane’s Uncle and getaway driver, Derrick Smith. In 2017, 23 years after this infamous event happened, Margot Robbie is gearing up to play Tonya in the movie, “I Tonya” and everyone involved in the 1994 event, including Nancy Kerrigan, desperately want to get away from it all. Katie and Cassi take some detours to talk about why tourist sites in Hollywood are the worst, Joe’s Crab Shack, Disneyland, the documentary “Searching for Sugarman” and why owning up and letting go of your mistakes will make you a happier, healthier person. Enjoy!  See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Unsportsmanlike Conduct: The Ballad of Tonya Harding and Nancy Kerrigan

On this date in 1994, American figure skater Nancy Kerrigan was attacked by a man hired by the husband of her main competitor, Tonya Harding. Here are some things you may not have known about the skaters and the attack. Nancy Kerrigan was born in 1969 in a suburb of Boston. She began skating at the age of six and won her first competition at age nine. She placed fourth in the junior competition at the U.S. championships in 1987, and made her senior debut the next season. She placed third at the 1991 U.S. Championships and earned a trip to the world championships. There she earned the bronze medal behind fellow Americans Kristi Yamaguchi and Tonya Harding. She finished third at the 1992 Winter Olympics. Tonya Harding was born in Portland, Oregon, in 1970. As a child, she claims she was physically abused by her mother. She began skating at age three and landed her first triple lutz at age 12. She dropped out of high school during her sophomore year to concentrate on figure skating. In 1991, she landed her first triple axel in competition on her way to winning the national championship. She was the first woman to complete a triple axel in a short program, the first woman to land two triple axels in one competition and the first woman to complete a triple axel/double toe loop combination. She finished fourth at the 1992 Olympics but failed to qualify for the 1993 World Championships. Which brings us to 1994. Nancy Kerrigan was attacked by Shane Stant following a practice session at the U.S. Championships at Detroit’s Cobo Arena. She was struck a few inches above the knee with a telescopic baton. Her leg was bruised, but not broken, but she was still forced to withdraw from the event which determined the two-person U.S. Olympic team. Harding won the title and a berth to the Olympics in Lillehammer, Norway. It was later discovered that Stant was hired by Harding’s husband Jeff Gillooly and her bodyguard Shawn Eckhardt. Kerrigan was named to the Olympic team despite not competing in the national championships. Kerrigan earned the silver medal at Lillehammer, while Harding finished eighth, after restarting her free program due to a broken lace on her skate. Kerrigan retired from competitive skating following the Olympics. Gillooly, Eckhardt and getaway driver Derrick Smith were sent to prison for their parts in the attack. Harding pleaded guilty to conspiring to hinder the prosecution of the attackers. She received three years probation, 500 hours of community service and a $160,000 fine. In June of 1994, Harding was stripped of her national championship and banned for life by the U.S. Figure Skating Association. Harding later claimed that she didn’t go to authorities before the attack because Gillooly had threatened to kill her. Following his release from prison, Gillooly changed his name to Jeff Stone. Eckhardt changed his name to Brian Sean Griffith. He died in 2007 at the age of 40. Our question, who did Nancy Kerrigan bump from the 1994 Olympic Team? Today is Armed Forces Day in Iraq and Epiphany. It’s unofficially Apple Tree Day, National Bean Day and National Shortbread Day. It’s the birthday of musician Syd Barrett, who was born in 1946; actor and comedian Rowan Atkinson, who is 62 and actress and comedian Kate McKinnon, who is 33. This week in 1994 the top song in the U.S. was “Hero” by Mariah Carey; the No. 1 movie was “Mrs. Doubtfire” and “Slow Waltz in Cedar Bend” by Robert James Waller topped the New York Times Bestsellers list.
