This week, Dr. Drew talks to Jason Wahler and Keenan Diamond about addiction and the recovery process. They explore exposure therapy, the surrender process, and provide updates on how the cast of Laguna Beach is doing. They also discuss what families should look for when selecting recovery facilities. Additionally, they talk about Sobrsafe, a transdermal technology that detects alcohol through passive skin contact, and its various use cases. https://sobrsafe.com/
Ashley Wahler, celebrity hair stylist and TV personality, and wife to Jason Wahler (known for his appearances on Laguna Beach and The Hills) joins Amy on today's episode. Ashley talks reality TV, her husband's experiences with addiction, and learning how to be a partner to someone in recovery – including facing her own codependency issues and educating herself on alcoholism as a disease. When you are in the depths of dealing with someone with addiction, it is a lonely place to be. Jason's addictions led to them losing everything, and led Ashley to lose who she was – feeling depressed and soulless, and living with someone in the depths of their disease with no tools to fix it. Ashley learned that struggling alone is not an option and that recovery is a disease that touches the whole family. She is now helping and supporting others with the Family Recovery Foundation who offer free zoom meetings with a licensed therapist to any family dealing with addiction. PLUS – Ashley dishes on her hair stylist secrets: her favorite hair dryer, why you shouldn't be using dry shampoo, how hot your hair tools should be, and how much hair shedding is normal! The latest episode of “Addiction Talk” promises to be a thought-provoking conversation between three guests who are at the forefront of addiction recovery research and advocacy. Cure Addiction Now Founder Nancy Davis, Director of Drug Discovery Institute Paul J. Kenny, and MTV's Laguna Beach and The Hills star Jason Wahler will be discussing the latest breakthroughs in addiction recovery, including the usage of the widely popular medications Ozempic and Wegovy (semaglutide) to combat addiction cravings.
Laguna Beach's Alex Murrel Johnson, otherwise know as Alex M, returns. Yup, Laguna Beach. One of the granddaddy's of them all, or as we like to say, one of the best reality shows to ever exist. Alex explains what it was like to be a student at Laguna Beach High School when MTV came knocking on its door with the concept for a reality show that followed the lives, and interrelationships, of some of Orange County's more “interesting” students. Alex explains what it was like to “film” with very few reality shows, other than shows like The Real World, existing at the time. She also discusses how she felt with her “bit*h” edit once she watched the show back as the season aired. Alex also discusses what it was like to gain instant fame overnight and how life changed once that fame, and money, started to roll in. Of course, we also discuss her Laguna Beach colleagues Lauren Conrad, Jason Wahler, Stephen Colletti and Kristin Cavallari. We discuss what our fav Laguna Beach students were like way back when, and the status of each of these relationships today. Alex discusses what life was like once her time on the show ended and she moved to LA, where she initially spent a lot of time hanging out in the clubs with other friends, including some of our favorite Hill's cast members, Audrina Patridge, Heidi Montag, Brody Jenner and Spencer Pratt. During her time in Los Angeles she also partied with Celebs like Paris Hilton, Aaron Carter and ex boyfriend Backstreet Boy Nick Carter. Alex discusses just how much reality TV has changed since the early days of MTV. Finally, we answer the age old question, just how “real” was Laguna Beach / The Hills. TV personality, husband, and board member of the Red Songbird Foundation, Jason Wahler, joins this week's episode of "Rooted in Recovery" to share his journey from addict and reality TV star to sobriety and mental health advocacy. Jason Wahler, a native of Laguna Beach, CA, began his addiction journey during his teenage years, which led him to abandon his dream of becoming a baseball player. In his early adulthood, MTV started shooting “Laguna Beach: The Real Orange County,” which not only fueled his ego but also intensified his alcohol and drug abuse. After a traumatic experience, Wahler embarked on the rocky road to sobriety in 2010. After a relapse in 2015, Wahler knew he had to surrender to recovery for himself and his family. Wahler helps others on their road to recovery through the Red Songbird Foundation, founded by Hilary Roberts, and maintains his grounded presence in his new home base of Nashville, TN. With everything going on with Bethenny Frankel's lawsuit regarding the injustices of Reality TV, real vs fake, contracts and much more, we figured it was a great time to share this chat with one of the originals, Jason Wahler from Laguna Beach, The Hills and The Hills: New Beginnings. Of course, Jason takes us back to the beginning when he was just a high school student whose friends - Lauren Conrad, Kristin Cavallari, Stephen Colletti, and Lo Bosworth - were cast on a TV show about their high school, otherwise known as Laguna Beach High. We discuss how Jason got involved in the show, how that show, Laguna Beach, spun off into The Hills and how, overnight, he could no longer go to the gas station or mall or mailbox without being recognized. With fame, the issues he was already struggling with became exacerbated, and he quickly spiraled out of control. There were public arrests and intoxication which eventually lead to rock bottom. Jason shares what that was like and how he eventually sought the help he needed through Dr Drew and other available resources to eventually make this his “life's work”. Jason answers all of our questions, once and for all, about what specific scenes, events and happenings in The Hills were real and which were not real. We cover it all. So interesting to see how this chat holds up in light of everything going on with Bravo, Production, Bethenny and Andy Cohen today. @jasonwahler @behindvelvetrope @davidyontef BONUS & AD FREE EPISODES Available at - www.patreon.com/behindthevelvetrope BROUGHT TO YOU BY: AQUATRU- aquatrue.com (20% Off Plus a 30 Day Money Back Guarantee. My guest today is the incredible Jason Wahler. You probably know him from MTV's Laguna Beach, The Hills or Celebrity Rehab but he is also a father, a husband, and an addiction and mental health advocate. I always feel so at home talking with fellow addicts and our conversation was totally soul-filling for me. Jason tragically went through a very public struggle with addiction. Between the ages of 18-23 he checked into 12 different treatment centers and was arrested more than 8 times. In this episode Jason recalls how he knew he had hit rock bottom the day his daughter was born. While his wife was giving birth on the 4th floor of the hospital, he was down on the 1st floor detoxing. Jason has seen it all and is now using his story to help others in the most beautiful way possible. We discuss the misconception that “relapse is part of recovery” and nerd out on the effects that addiction has on the brain. There are so many nuggets of wisdom and hope in his story and we even dig into co-dependency, setting boundaries and how the families of those struggling with addiction can best help their loved ones. Jason Wahler joins Audrina Patridge, Brody Jenner, and Frankie Delgado in the VIP room to discuss Season 1, Episode 4, “Lauren and Jason Pt 2.” Jason gives some behind-the-scenes scoop from the episode, like who really bought those flowers for Lauren and the real timeline of when he and Lauren really get together. Hear about Heidi's job at Bolthouse (yes, that frustration and job were real). Jason also gets extremely candid about his battle with addiction and how it played out in those season 1 episodes with Lauren. Lauren and Jason Pt 2 Synopsis: Lauren and Jason reignite their relationship and Heidi begins to wonder if quitting school for Bolthouse Productions was a mistake.
