Shadow Politics with Senator Michael D. Brown Guest, Josh Horwitz, a Distinguished Professor discussing how to reduce gun violence through public health research In the District of Columbia, it has become clear that any person who wants a gun can get one. Despite some of the toughest gun laws in America, our streets are awash in guns. Murders and carjackings are up and at the root of the problem are guns. I will discuss with Josh solutions that can reduce the amount of guns readily available on the street and help us stem the increase in this public health emergency. Please join us for this important discussion on gun violence and how we can stop it. Tune in for this interesting discussion!

We got a crap-ton of super interesting voicemails about our story on 1800 S. Broadway, the once and future weed lounge. So producers Paul Karolyi and Xandra McMahon are taking your calls and talking it out. And if you don't know what this is about, check out part one and part two of our story on real estate developer Josh Horwitz's effort to carry on his father's legacy by opening a weed lounge in a contentious spot on South Broadway. Do you have something to say about 1800 S. Broadway or smoking weed in public? Leave us a voicemail with your name and neighborhood and we may play it on the show: (720) 500-5418 Xandra mentioned a story she reported a few years back about weed tourism. If you haven't heard part one of our look at 1800 S. Broadway and the dawn of public weed consumption in Denver, scroll back in your podcast feed to last Friday or click here. When the city of Denver opened applications for marijuana hospitality businesses last year, the new program attracted a diverse mix of go-getters, from the owner of a private marijuana club who wanted to go public to a Cap Hill mansion whose owners thought weed would help attract more tourists. Among them was an enterprising young real estate tycoon, Josh Horwitz. He applied to open a weed lounge at 1800 S. Broadway, the exact spot where Habibi Hookah Cafe undermined the trust of the neighborhood with excessive late-night partying and violence. The neighbors are organizing to stop Horwitz and City Councilman Jolon Clark is opposed to his permit, but no one has heard his side of the story. Until now. This isn't the first time Denver has tried to set up a regulatory framework for marijuana hospitality businesses. They tried before a few years ago, but the rules were so restrictive that only one business ever opened. You can learn more about that and Denver's long on-again, off-again relationship with weed in today's CCD newsletter: https://denver.citycast.fm/newsletter/ What do you think should be done about 1800 S. Broadway? Let us know on Twitter @citycastdenver Looking to advertise on City Cast Denver? Dr. Josh Sharfstein talks with Dr. Shannon Frattaroli of the Johns Hopkins Center for Gun Violence Prevention and Policy, and Josh Horwitz of the Coalition to Stop Gun Violence about ERPOs and what went wrong in Indiana, and what needs to be done to implement laws effectively that keep firearms from people at high risk of harming themselves or others.

As part of our election series, guest host Dr. Colleen Barry talks with Josh Horwitz, executive director of the Coalition to Stop Gun Violence about what’s at stake for gun policy in this election. They also talk about how 2020 is shaping up to be a grim year for homicides and gun violence, the rise of gun sales and suicides, which gun policies garner majority support and which are more contentious, and how the pandemic’s focus on public health prevention methods could impact future gun policy.
The insurrectionist idea — that armed citizens have the ultimate right to take matters into their own hands and take up arms against whatever they define as an oppressive government — was once a fringe one. In 2020, however, the idea has been promoted and popularized by the gun lobby and its allies in the far-right movement. Josh Horwitz, executive director of the Coalition to Stop Gun Violence, joins JJ and Christian Heyne, Brady’s VP of Policy, to talk about how insurrectionism threatens democracy, how Trump's rhetoric is directing a vigilante army through his Twitter feed and press conferences, why racism is present in all of this, and why voting is so important. On February 14, when a 19-year-old former student opened fire on the campus of Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, killing 17 people, 14 of whom were students, the tragedy appeared to be following the pattern that many Americans had sadly come to expect. Politicians of both parties, including the President himself, offered thoughts and prayers for the victims in interviews and on social media. Democrats trumpeted the need for what they view as common sense gun control practices like limiting high-capacity magazines and bump stocks. Republicans stressed the need for better mental health screening and campus security, the familiar refrain that the best protection is a “good guy with a gun.” Then, three days after the shooting, when the tragedy would typically have begun to fade from the country’s consciousness as had happened with the dozens of school shootings that have seized the public’s attention in the two decades since the Columbine High School massacre, something different happened. On February 17, at a gun control rally held in front of the Broward County Courthouse, Stoneman Douglas senior Emma Gonzalez gave an impassioned plea for students to stand up and demand action that was viewed over 2.8 million times after a CNN camera crew put the footage up on YouTube. But Gonzalez was just getting started. Along with classmates Alfonso Calderon, Sarah Chadwick, Emma González, David Hogg and Cameron Kasky, she started the organization Never Again MSD with the goal of ending school shootings in the US permanently. Speaking on major news programs from “Face The Nation” to “60 Minutes,” the students reinvigorated the gun control movement, as people of all ages were impressed by their intelligence, their passion and their refusal to be silent. With Never Again MSD’s first major demonstration, The March For Our Lives happening in Washington, DC and across the country on Saturday, host Jesse Lent talks to Josh Horwitz, executive director of the Coalition To Stop Gun Violence, about how the Parkland students have changed the political calculus of the gun debate in this country and how his organization is supporting their efforts.
