What does it take to rebuild the foundation of public health in the United States, and why did it take 30 years to get here? Director of the Division of Jurisdictional Support, CDC's Public Health Infrastructure Center, Stacey Madison Jenkins breaks down the Public Health Infrastructure Grant (PHIG), a $4.6 billion investment reaching more than 100 health departments nationwide. Designed to strengthen the core of the system, not just respond to crises, PHIG is funding workforce expansion, modern data systems, and the everyday capabilities that keep communities safe. Jenkins explains how a nationwide shortage of 80,000 public health workers pushed the system to the brink, and how targeted investments are already putting thousands of professionals back into the field. From improving food safety inspections in Texas to doubling clinic capacity in Oklahoma and modernizing disease tracking in Nebraska, the results are tangible, local, and often invisible when they're working well. This work is supported by funds made available from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), National Center for STLT Public Health Infrastructure and Workforce, through OE22-2203: Strengthening U.S. Public Health Infrastructure, Workforce, and Data Systems grant. Corrections gets judged by headlines it didn't write, so I'm taking you behind the scenes of a month that reminded me why this profession deserves real respect. From Correctional Officers Week events to national recognition, I share the moments that felt like the “best of corrections” and the lessons we can bring back to our own agencies. We start at the One Voice United conference (link below), where I join Pete Bludworth (Corrections Unfiltered) and Sarah Robuck (Lexipol and Corrections1) to talk about our jobs and our voices. If we don't tell the truth about what correctional officers do, nature abhors a vacuum, and the public story gets filled with TV myths, one-sided news, and silence about the good work happening inside facilities. We also dig into wellness in corrections, efforts to get lawmakers to walk through prisons before setting policy on staffing and funding, and a powerful account from New York's union leadership caught between political pressure and officers pushed past the breaking point. Then we pivot to the stories many people never hear: the role correctional staff played during 9/11 recovery, and how corrections shows up in emergencies with resources and readiness. I also talk about practical support for staff, including a vendor focused on home loans for public servants that explicitly includes corrections, and the National Medal of Honor for Corrections banquet, where courage and service are honored on a national stage. One of the vendors I met at OVU (link below) is a company that is working to get public service heroes, including correctional officers, into houses. American Hero Home Loans uses its Hero Advantage+™ to connect eligible heroes with trusted real estate, lending, title, settlement, insurance, and home service partners. We close with training and leadership: field training insights from the Southeast Field Training Officers Association (SEFTOA - link below). I also share with a new leadership class my framework for handling change by reframing fear and walking through the next door of their life with skill and confidence. If you care about corrections leadership, correctional officer wellness, and changing public perception of corrections, this one's for you. Subscribe, share it with a coworker, and leave a review so more staff can find these stories. One Voice United & The National Medal of Honor for Corrections https://onevoiceunited.org/American Heroes Home LoansCorrections Webpage:ahhlusa.com/correctionsAHHL Flyer:https://canva.link/theprisonofficer Joe FerraroFounder & CEOAmerican Heroes Homes and Lending631-767-9073joe.ferraro@ahhlusa.com or joeferraro@annie-mac.comAngela HarrenDirector of Business Development & MarketingAmerican Heroes Homes and Lending612-423-4423angela.harren@ahhlusa.comSoutheastern Field Training Officers Associationhttps://seftoa.org/For my new book: Weight of Justice: Leadership Lessons from Inside America's Toughest Prisons: A Correctional Officer's JourneyMichael Cantrell's books: https://www.cantrellwrites.com/Amazon: https://amzn.to/4utqUSOSend us Fan Mail PepperBallFrom crowd control to cell extractions, the PepperBall system is the safe, non-lethal option.Command PresenceBringing prisons and jails the training they deserve!Disclaimer: This post contains affiliate links. In this episode, Madelyn O'Farrell speaks with Santosh Sankar about the broken skilled trades pipeline and its impact on America's push to reindustrialize. Santosh traces the problem back to the 1983 “A Nation at Risk” report and subsequent policy shifts that de-emphasized vocational education, fueled stigma around trades, and dismantled employer-school partnerships. He highlights looming shortages in critical industrial roles such as welders, pipefitters, millwrights, industrial electricians, and CNC machinists, noting that most current hiring is just replacing retirees and that training timelines make quick fixes impossible. The conversation explores why these industrial trades are hard to automate, the cultural and structural barriers to attracting new talent, and the urgent need for employer-led, modernized vocational training models—potentially even “vocational training as a service”—to close the skills gap and unlock the promise of America's industrial renaissance. Highlights from their conversation include: Historical Roots of the Skills Trade Pipeline Crisis (0:26) How 1980s Education Policy Undermined Vocational Trades (1:09) Optics, Stigma, and Cultural Bias Against Skilled Trades (5:30) The Big 5 Industrial Trades Driving Reindustrialization (6:28) Aging Workforce, Replacement Demand, and Automation Limits (7:53) Rethinking Vocational Ed Capacity, Equipment, and Instruction (11:30) Role of Employers in Rebuilding Training and Apprenticeships (15:28) Vertically Integrated Training Models and Credentialing (15:50) Investment Case and “Vocational Training as a Service” (19:04) Regional Labor Constraints and Final Thoughts on Opportunity (21:27) Dynamo Ventures is a venture firm backing founders upgrading the physical economy. Chris Bayless is a former Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) Special Agent who spent more than three decades working some of the most dangerous undercover investigations in the United States. An original member of ATF's Enhanced Undercover Program beginning in 2000, Bayless spent years infiltrating violent outlaw motorcycle gangs including the Outlaws, Grim Reapers, and organizations connected to the Hell's Angels, helping build major federal RICO prosecutions against organized criminal enterprises. Raised in a suburb of Chicago by two school teachers, Bayless was influenced early by mentors in law enforcement who shaped his path toward public service. After attending Manchester University in Indiana, where he studied Environmental Studies and Criminal Justice, he joined the ATF in 1987 in the Chicago Field Division. Throughout his career, Bayless worked major federal operations targeting violent crime in cities such as St. Louis, Oakland, Phoenix, Cleveland, and Albuquerque. His undercover work placed him deep inside biker gangs and other criminal networks, requiring years of operating under assumed identities in high-risk environments. Beyond investigations, Bayless served in the ATF Peer Support Program, helping fellow agents process trauma following critical incidents, including the aftermath of Waco. After decades of operating in violent environments and living in constant hypervigilance, he was eventually diagnosed with PTSD near the end of his career. Today, Bayless teaches at the ATF Academy, helping train the next generation of agents while reflecting on lessons from his career about trauma, resilience, faith, and redemption. Outside of law enforcement, he spends time restoring WWII Army Willys Jeeps and navigating life after decades of undercover work. For years, the conventional wisdom held that the United States retained a decisive lead over China in the technologies and industries that will define the 21st century. The 2025 report of the US–China Economic and Security Review Commission to Congress challenges that view, and its conclusions make for sobering reading. Ahead of the Trump–Xi summit where trade and technology are on the table, the Commission finds that China has not only caught up with but in multiple sectors now leads advanced economies including the United States. From electric vehicles and solar panels to quantum computing pathways and pharmaceutical supply chains, Beijing’s combination of state direction, entrepreneurial competition, and sustained investment has produced results that Western policymakers are only beginning to reckon with. In this episode, the Lowy Institute's Richard McGregor speaks with Randy Schriver and Mike Kuiken — vice-chairs of the Commission — about what their report found and what it means. They discuss China’s model of directed innovation, the case for a consolidated US economic statecraft entity, the multiple “choke points” China now holds over industrialised economies, and what sustained engagement in the Pacific, including by Australia, must look like to be effective. They also assess the military situation around Taiwan and the second-order implications of the ongoing conflict with Iran. Randy Schriver served as Assistant Secretary of Defense for Indo-Pacific Security Affairs in the first Trump administration. Mike Kuiken is a Distinguished Visiting Fellow at Stanford University’s Hoover Institution and a former senior adviser to Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer. This week on the GovNavigators Show, Adam and Robert sit down with Daniel Gaush, Acting Director of the International Cooperative Administrative Support Services Service Center at the U.S. Department of State, for a fascinating look at one of the federal government's largest and least understood shared services operations.Daniel explains how the ICASS system coordinates administrative support for more than 300 federal entities across embassies and consulates worldwide, everything from HR and motor pools to security, facilities, and logistics. He shares stories from a 24-year career spanning Morocco, China, Afghanistan, and Washington, including negotiating trade agreements, touring a Chinese nuclear reactor, and managing support operations in wartime environments. The conversation explores the promise and pain points of shared services: balancing costs, managing interagency consensus, handling global crises, and adapting to major structural changes, such as the integration of USAID functions into the State Department. Daniel also reflects on the unique culture of the Foreign Service and offers advice for the next generation of Americans considering international public service careers.Show Notes:Final Report from The President's Council to Assess the FederalEmergency Management AgencyWhat's on the GovNavigators' Radar?May 13: House Oversight & Government Reform Committee Hearing: DoW Financial Management: Examining Progress and New Audit Approaches May 14: House Oversight & Government Reform Hearing: Reducing America's National Debt: Rooting Out Federal Waste, Fraud, and Overregulation May 14-15: ACT-IAC's Emerging Technology & Innovation Summit
Send us Fan MailOn any given night, more than 750,000 people are homeless in America - but that number doesn't even begin to tell the full story.Today's conversation sits at the intersection of advocacy, lived experience, and storytelling - because ending homelessness isn't just a policy challenge, it's a human one.Our first guest, Donald Whitehead Jr., is one of the leading voices in the fight to end homelessness in America. As Executive Director of the National Coalition for the Homeless ( https://nationalhomeless.org/ ), he brings more than 25 years of frontline and leadership experience across housing, recovery, and social services. But Donald's work is also deeply personal - having experienced homelessness and addiction himself, he now helps shape national policy, elevate lived voices, and push for a more equitable system rooted in dignity and justice.Joining him is Valerio Zanoli ( https://www.valeriozanoli.com/ ), an award-winning filmmaker and social entrepreneur who believes cinema can be a force for change. His latest documentary, HOMELESS ( https://homelessdocumentary.com/ ), goes beyond statistics to humanize the experience of homelessness - exploring the stories, dreams, and resilience of people too often overlooked. The film has already been featured at global forums and praised for its emotional depth and social impact ( https://buffalo8.com/project/homeless/ ).Together, they represent two powerful lenses on the same issue: one from the front lines of advocacy and systems change, the other from behind the camera - shaping how the world sees and understands homelessness.Let's Make a Difference Project - www.letsmakeadifference.info#Homelessness #HousingCrisis #EndHomelessness #SocialImpact #DocumentaryFilm #HousingFirst #PublicPolicy #AffordableHousing #MentalHealthAwareness #EconomicInequality #LasVegas #UrbanCrisis #NonprofitLeadership #StorytellingForChange #HumanStories #SocialJustice #Inequality #HomelessInAmerica #PolicyDebate #ImpactFilmSupport the show

Alessandro Chesser is a 40-year-old Silicon Valley entrepreneur. He's married with two kids and was the first in his family to attend college. His grandfather immigrated from Sicily and worked as a school janitor so his family could have a better life. Skip forward a few generations, and Chesser is noticing the way wealthy investors hide their money to avoid paying taxes. He's outraged and wants to upend the tax system, which he thinks is unfair to the everyday American worker. In Chesser's mind, the realistic solution isn't to reform the tax code, but to make it easier for average Americans to access one of the best-kept secrets of the superrich: trusts.Trusts have become big business in the US. They are now an industry worth trillions of dollars. But no one knows the exact number, because the trust industry is extraordinarily private. Trusts can last forever (literally), but there is no public registry for them. In fact, they are one of the main reasons why watchdog groups consider America to be the most secretive financial jurisdiction in the world. This week on Reveal, journalists Sally Herships and Leah McGrath Goodman investigate America's shadowland of trusts. As the nation's wealth gap keeps growing—and Americans brace for Tax Day—we uncover what's at stake as US states race to become the most trust-friendly jurisdictions in the world. The monitoring cameras inside Iran's most fortified nuclear facilities just went dark. The IAEA has been locked out. And from 60% enriched uranium to a bomb… it's now a matter of days. But while the world watches the Middle East, a completely different kind of threat is already operating inside American cities. In this episode, Sam Westrop of the Middle East Forum breaks down the architecture of the Red-Green Alliance, a tactical partnership between the radical left and Islamist extremist networks targeting American sovereignty from the inside out. We examine the river of money flowing through U.S.-based front charities, the municipal capture happening in Michigan, and what Maximum Pressure 2.0 actually needs to look like.

Zach Lahn is a first-time political candidate running in the 2026 Republican primary for Governor of Iowa. Never having held elected office, he launched his campaign from his family farm, positioning himself as a self-funded outsider independent of party leadership and corporate donors. His candidacy is rooted in a belief that Iowa needs leadership grounded in rural life rather than professional politics. Lahn's platform is socially conservative and economically populist, with a strong focus on agriculture and land ownership. He opposes foreign and corporate control of Iowa farmland and advocates for family farms over large agribusiness monopolies. Economically, he is critical of corporate consolidation and globalism, supporting antitrust action and policies that favor small businesses. On social issues, Lahn is anti-abortion, opposes gender-affirming medical procedures for minors, and emphasizes traditional family structures and parental control in education. He also runs on a tough-on-crime platform, with a focus on fentanyl trafficking and strong support for law enforcement. In this episode of The Holy Grail of Investing, Christopher Zook sits down with Joe Lonsdale, a leading investor at the intersection of AI, defense, and national competitiveness, for a timely conversation on what is real (and what is hype) in the AI revolution. Joe shares why he views AI as a major industrial revolution driven by productivity, not an "existential" technology destined to replace civilization. He breaks down the AI value chain, from energy and chips to data centers, models, software infrastructure, and the applications delivering real economic value, along with where he sees the best risk-reward opportunities. The conversation expands into the strategic stakes of the AI race, including how defense, space, energy, and critical minerals fit together and what it takes to build world-class companies in sectors shaped by both innovation and policy. Joe also reflects on founding the University of Austin, and why courage and open debate matter more than ever in a rapidly changing world. This week, the hosts revisit the cultural chaos of early 2000s reality television through the lens of the documentary Reality Check: Inside America's Next Top Model on Netflix. What a time to be alive! From the era that brought viewers Flavor of Love, I Love New York, Jersey Shore, The Real World, and Paris Hilton's reality TV dominance, the conversation explores how shock value, humiliation, and boundary-pushing became entertainment staples. At the center of the discussion is Tyra Banks' assertion that she was simply producing the content audiences wanted more of. The hosts critically examine that defense, questioning whether demand absolves creators of accountability. They unpack how reality television shaped beauty standards, normalized problematic behavior, and blurred the line between competition and exploitation. From controversial challenges to moments that feel deeply uncomfortable in hindsight, the episode explores what responsibility producers hold when entertainment has real-world impact.*Please be advised this episode is intended for adult audiences and contains adult language and content. When America's Next Top Model arrived on our screens in 2003, it was an instant hit with viewers around the world. The reality TV competition, hosted by supermodel Tyra Banks, saw young aspiring models compete for the chance to win a lucrative modelling contract. Although the show ended almost a decade ago, it's back on our screens in Netflix's new documentary series, Inside America's Next Top Model. The three-part show revisits the modelling competitions' most shocking moments and includes interviews with former contestants and judges that paint a picture of a toxic and harmful filming environment. In today's episode, Irish Times contributor Rachel O'Dwyer and model and actress Amber Jean Rowan join Róisín Ingle to share their thoughts on the show and how the young women who took part were treated. Rowan also discusses her experience on The Model Agent, an Irish reality show which she took part in at just 15 years old. But first Irish Times opinion editor Jennifer O'Connell is here to discuss some of the biggest stories of the week including the newly released EP by U2, the arrest of Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor and the ongoing search in Co Wicklow for missing Irish women JoJo Dullard and Deirdre Jacob. Upwards of 80% of critical minerals are processed in China - even when they're mined elsewhere. If a global conflict broke out tomorrow, America likely couldn't supply its own defense industrial base.In this episode, Ashley Zumwalt-Forbes joins Logan and Alex to share what she learned deploying $16 billion in grants and tax credits as Deputy Director for Batteries and Critical Materials at the Department of Energy - and why she's now back in the private sector running two critical minerals SPACs worth over $500 million. The conversation covers how China built a state-backed monopoly that Western companies can't outcompete, why the Biden and Trump administrations use different tools to try and accomplish the same goal, and what Project Vault and the recent Critical Minerals Ministerial signal about where policy is heading. Ashley also delivers a warning: the flood of capital into critical minerals will lead to capital destruction, and the industry's reputation may suffer for years.
