In this special in-between episode, we're going to explore the spiritual practice of gratitude and its significance in our everyday lives, especially during challenging times. We're going to talk about four ways to choose gratitude. One of the things that's always been really challenging for me as a believer is separating my gratitude and thanksgiving from my circumstances. And I wish after all these years of walking with God that I had improved in this area, I think maybe I'm growing in this area, but the reality is I know my own heart, and I know that when things are in a joyful place circumstantially, In fact, I wrote in my journal this morning, Lord, help me to have as much joy for you in the hard times as I do in the good times. And I wanted to bring us to, you know, we hear all about choosing gratitude and about being thankful to God. So that's what we're going to talk about today as we move into the Christmas season and transition into our Advent series on John. We're going to look at 10 verses in the Bible where God instructs us to choose gratitude, no matter what circumstances we're facing. Start with Mark 1:35 as your inspiration." **(23:00 – 0:00)* * PART 1 Intro: Living as a "new self" is not just an inward change but should be visible to others. Gratitude should be an outpouring of this new life in Christ. 1. Overflowing with PEACE: Gratitude Rooted in Unity (v.15) Paul calls us to let Christ's peace rule, promoting unity and gratitude within the body of Christ. Application: Gratitude fosters unity, while bitterness and self-centeredness tear it down. What actions come out of a Thankful heart and influence our unity? - promotes humility, readily forgives, lifts up others, etc 2. Overflowing with WISDOM: Gratitude increased as We Grow in the Word (v.16) When the word of Christ dwells richly in us, it transforms our minds, shaping us into grateful, wise people. Application: A heart filled with Scripture is naturally inclined toward thankfulness. The better we know God and understand what He has done for us, the more thankful we will be. 3. Overflowing with PURPOSE: Gratitude expressed in All We Do (v.17) Living in the name of Jesus, on His mission, means every act—big or small—is done with thankfulness to God. - Application: We can honor Christ in all things when we remember that everything we do is an offering of thanks. A person who sees their work, family roles, and daily interactions as opportunities to thank and glorify God. How does a Thankful Heart encourage us on the mission of Jesus? -reminded of what Jesus did for use -want others to share in the blessing **(00:00) END PART 1** **(27:00 – 5:00) BEGIN PART 2** Why Thankfulness Matters - It reflects a heart aligned with God's will and purpose. - Gratitude transforms our perspective, shifting focus from circumstances to God's goodness. The Command to Be Thankful 1. Biblical Foundations - 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 - 16 Rejoice always, 17 pray without ceasing, 18 in everything give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you. - Psalm 107:1: “Oh give thanks to the LORD, for he is good, for his steadfast love endures forever!” - Emphasize thankfulness as a command, not an option. 2. Thankfulness as Obedience - It's part of submitting to God's lordship. - Disobedience in thankfulness can lead to bitterness or discontent. Thankfulness in Difficult Circumstances 1. Biblical Examples - Job 1:21: “The LORD gave, and the LORD has taken away; blessed be the name of the LORD.” - Habakkuk 3:17-18: “Though the fig tree should not blossom... yet I will rejoice in the LORD.” - Philippians 4:6-7: “Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God.” 2. God's Sovereignty and Goodness - Trusting God's plan even when it's not clear. - Thankfulness as an act of faith and trust. The Fruit of Thankfulness 1. Influences Your Relationship with God - Deepens your relationship with God. (Psalm 50:23: “The one who offers thanksgiving as his sacrifice glorifies me.”) - Promotes joy and contentment (Philippians 4:11-13). 2. Your Thankfulness Influences Others - Thankfulness is contagious and glorifies God before unbelievers (Matthew 5:16). - It fosters unity and encouragement within the church body (Ephesians 5:19-20). 3. Practical Challenge - Write a letter of thanks to someone who has blessed you. Closing Thoughts 1. Key Points - Thankfulness is God's will for you. - It's not dependent on circumstances but rooted in who God is. - It transforms your heart and your witness. 2. Challenge - Memorize 1 Thessalonians 5:18 this week. - Start a blessing journal, remember what God has done. **(5:00 – 1:00)** Doctrine of the Month - Doctrine of Man Humanity's Purpose - *“Have you ever wondered why you were created? What is the purpose of life from God's perspective?”* - *“Today, we're exploring humanity's purpose according to the Bible. From the beginning, God designed us with intention and meaning.”* - *“Let's look at Scripture to understand why God created us and what our lives should be about.”* #### **2. Humanity Was Created to Glorify God (1 minute)** - **Primary purpose: To glorify God** - *Isaiah 43:7*: *“Everyone who is called by My name, whom I have created for My glory; I have formed him, yes, I have made him.”* - Emphasize: *“We are made to reflect God's glory in our words, actions, and attitudes.”* - **What does glorifying God mean?** - To glorify God is to honor Him and display His character. - *1 Corinthians 10:31*: *“Therefore, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.”* - *“Every aspect of life—work, relationships, and even recreation—can glorify God when done with the right heart.”* --- #### **3. Humanity Was Created for Fellowship with God (1 minute)** - **God's desire for relationship**: - *Genesis 3:8*: *“And they heard the sound of the Lord God walking in the garden in the cool of the day.”* - *“This verse shows that from the beginning, God desired close fellowship with humanity.”* - **Sin broke fellowship, but Christ restores it**: - *John 17:3*: *“And this is eternal life, that they may know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom You have sent.”* - Explain: *“God's purpose is for us to know Him intimately, not just as Creator, but as Savior and Father.”* --- #### **4. Humanity Was Created to Serve and Steward Creation (1 minute)** - **Stewardship of the earth**: - *Genesis 1:28*: *“Then God blessed them, and God said to them, ‘Be fruitful and multiply; fill the earth and subdue it; have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over every living thing that moves on the earth.'”* - *“This means we are caretakers of God's creation, managing it responsibly for His glory.”* - **Good works as part of our purpose**: - *Ephesians 2:10*: *“For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them.”* - Connect: *“Serving others and fulfilling the tasks God gives us is part of our God-given purpose.”* --- #### **5. Humanity Was Created to Enjoy God Forever (30 seconds)** - **Eternal joy in God's presence**: - *Psalm 16:11*: *“You will show me the path of life; in Your presence is fullness of joy; at Your right hand are pleasures forevermore.”* - Explain: *“Our purpose includes delighting in God, both now and for eternity.”* - Summarize: *“God didn't create us out of necessity but out of love, to share His joy and glory with us forever.”* - Recap the key points: - *“We were created to glorify God, enjoy fellowship with Him, steward His creation, and ultimately experience the joy of His presence forever.”* - Call to action: - *“Take time this week to reflect on these truths. How can you glorify God in your daily life? How can you grow in fellowship with Him?”* - Encourage with Scripture: - *“As Colossians 3:17 reminds us, ‘And whatever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him.'”* **(1:00)** - “Thank you for listening today! The Word of God is our True North. It allows us to see all things in light of the design of God. Without this grounding standard, we would simply wander through life, unwilling and unable to avoid destruction. We would never be able to truly thrive in the lives our God has given us. We would never really know the answers to life's questions. We would not have the motivation to move in the right direction. We would not be able to seek purpose and meaning. We would not know how to direct our children or support our community. CCLI Copyright License 11107056 CCLI Streaming License CSPL085064l

For a Jesus Follower in Difficult Circumstances, God: “is gracious and merciful, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love; and he relents over disaster” MESSAGE SUMMARY: God wants to make you and your life into a “pearl of great value”. However, some of us are upset about our life difficulties or issues in our relationships. You need to allow God to use your life circumstances. If you are obedient and submissive to God, He will turn your situations into a life of beauty. Alternatively, when you encounter these negative situations in your life, often, you can become bitter. On the other hand, you can submit and obey the Lord, thereby, permitting the Lord to turn your life and life situations into pearls of beauty and into a life of great value. Also, you will have more of Jesus' presence in your life. As Paul tells us in Philippians 1:21: “For to me to live is Christ, and to die is gain.". Remember, the Prophet Joel tells us, in Joel 2:13b, about the character of God: “he is gracious and merciful, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love; and he relents over disaster.". TODAY'S PRAYER: Keeping the Sabbath, Lord, will require a lot of changes in the way I am living life. Teach me, Lord, how to take the next step with this in a way that fits my unique personality and situation. Help me to trust you with all that will remain unfinished and to enjoy my humble place in your very large world. In Jesus' name, amen. Scazzero, Peter. Emotionally Healthy Spirituality Day by Day (p. 129). Zondervan. Kindle Edition. TODAY'S AFFIRMATION: Today, I affirm that because of what God has done for me in His Son, Jesus, I AM FORGIVEN. If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness. 1 John 1:9 SCRIPTURE REFERENCE (ESV): Joel 2:12-13; James 4:4-10; Isaiah 1:18-20; Psalms 61:1-8. Hearing God's Voice MESSAGE SUMMARY: Introduction (from 4/23/2017 Sermon): The Gospel is based on both the Old and the New Testaments. The Gospel must go forth in the power of the Holy Spirit – the Gospel is a Spiritual message. Today's Message: In John 10, Jesus is speaking about the “shepherd”; the shepherd: 1) enters through the gate; 2) has the gate opened by a watchman; 3) sheep listen to his voice; 4) calls each sheep by name; 5) leads his sheep by going ahead of the sheep; and 6) has a voice by which he is known to his sheep and they follow him. In the first century, shepherding was an intimate profession; and the shepherd was always with his sheep. The shepherd talked to his sheep, and the sheep knew the shepherd's voice. Also in John 10, Jesus talked about the “false shepherd” who is a “thief and a robber”. The sheep do not follow the “false shepherd”. Jesus says that the “thief (false shepherd) comes only to steal, kill and destroy”. In John 10:7-10, Jesus says that He is the “gate”, and He is the way (gate) by which we are saved from our sins and eternal death; and we are provisioned for a full life as His followers. Like the sheep that follow the good shepherd, if we follow Jesus, we will all hear His voice. How do we know the voice of Jesus? Consider that: 1) we must enter only through the gate – Jesus; 2) we must be a sheep of the Good Shepherd and follow Jesus through an intimate relationship with Him; 3) we must learn to listen (for example, today we listen through the inward witness of the Holy Spirit – the Holy Spirit is charged with communicating the will of God to mankind and to sync our mind with the mind of God); 4) we obey as we listen – in the New Testament, the words “hear” and “obey” are the same words – God will speak directions for our lives; and 5) we don't harden our hearts to the voice of the Lord – listen to His voice and obey. As the Lord says: “Be still and know that I am God.” (Psalms 46:10). 1 John 1:9 SCRIPTURE REFERNCE (ESV): John 10:1-18; Ezekiel 34:22-34; John 5:25-29: Ezekiel 43:2;1 King's 19:12; Isaiah 30:21; John 10:27-30; Hebrews 3:7-15. TODAY'S AFFIRMATION: Today, I affirm that because of what God has done for me in His Son, Jesus, I AM RIGHTEOUS IN GOD'S EYES. God made Him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in Him we might become the righteousness of God. 2 Corinthians 5:21 SCRIPTURE REFERENCE (ESV): Joel 2:12-13; James 4:4-10; Isaiah 1:18-20; Psalms 61:1-8. Turkeys and Eagles – Part 6: We Don't Need to Be Wimpy Christians MESSAGE SUMMARY: Series Overview: This Series has been looking at Paul's letter to the Ephesians to point out “Turkeyisms” – things by which have duped us into believing or behaving in ways which aren't what Christianity is all about. This Series has pointed out some changes in our thinking needed so that we can be like “Eagles” -- o be the people that God wants and intended for us to be. This Sermon will focus on Ephesians 6. Sermon: Turkey Thinking: “There is no real devil; the devil is just a concept to explain evil.” (The devil's best trick is to get us to believe there is no devil.); Eagle Thinking: “The devil and his cohorts never sleep.” Ephesians 6:10 – “Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of His might. Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil.”. How does one know if they are being tempted by the enemy? We know we are being tempted by the enemy when we are influenced to do something against Jesus -- the enemy wants to make us a weak Christian. However, we can't blame the temptations of our flesh on the devil. We need to always be clothed in the full armor of God to be full-time soldiers of Jesus against the devil. Turkey Thinking: “There is no spiritual warfare; Christianity is love, joy, and peace. Christianity is not about war.”; Eagle Thinking: “If I am serving the Lord, then I am always engaged in a spiritual battle.”. In this battle, we are not battling our fellow humans. One of the enemy's best strategies is to get us fighting each other, especially in the church. The devil wants us to divide and conquer. We must put on the full armor of God so that we can stand firm against the devil. The “full armor” means we are to both seek and speak God's truth while establishing a relationship with God. We are to live a righteous life in the full awareness that God has forgiven us. In standing firm and with our relationship with God, we are to share the Gospel. We are to “take up the shield of faith” by trusting in God in our warfare with the devil. The evil one wants us to doubt our Salvation from God's Grace and our faith that ensure eternal life with Jesus. Finally, we are to “take up the sword of the Spirit” – the Word of God. In Ephesians 6, the sword is the only element, of God's full armor, that is for both offense as well as defense. Paul then tells us “to pray in the Holy Spirit” – praying while fully focused on the Lord; prayer is the most powerful weapon we have in our fight against the devil. God wants us to be strong in Him” and not wimpy Christians in our warfare with the evil one. TODAY'S PRAYER: Lord, Sabbath rest is truly an unbelievable gift! Thank you that there is nothing I can do to earn your love; it comes without any strings attached. As I close my eyes for these few minutes before you, all I can say is, thank you! In Jesus' name, amen. Scazzero, Peter. Emotionally Healthy Spirituality Day by Day (p. 133). Zondervan. Kindle Edition. TODAY'S AFFIRMATION: Today, I affirm that because of what God has done for me in His Son, Jesus, I AM RIGHTEOUS IN GOD'S EYES. God made Him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in Him we might become the righteousness of God. 2 Corinthians 5:21 SCRIPTURE REFERENCE (ESV): Ephesians 6:10-20; Matthew 13:19-21; 1 Peter 5:8; Ephesians 4:12. We assume gratitude is simply a response to something good. Is it possible to have gratitude in the face of difficult circumstances? Beyond just a polite response, the Bible talks about gratitude in much deeper ways that actually give us tools to hold grief, anxiety, and stress along with gratitude. This episode is audio from a sermon Brent gave at his church.

Locked On Giants – Daily Podcast On The San Francisco Giants
The San Francisco Giants are finding ways to lose. When they pitch well, their offense doesn't pick them up. When they put together an early lead, the bullpen can't hold it. When they explode offensively, the Giants allowed a huge number or runs by the opponent. The talent is there for the Giants to be at least .500 so far this season, but the reality is they're 11-16 after getting swept in Mexico City. The offense and the defense hasn't been the problem. The SF Giants have above-average offensive numbers across the board, and the overall fWAR by their position players is among the best in MLB. On the pitching side, however, the Giants are simply allowing too many home runs on their fly balls, and allowing a high batting average on balls in play. The good news: these numbers are slow to stabilize and will likely regress to at least something more like league average over time. The bad news: the early results have cost them several wins, and they're five games under .500 and about to play the reigning champs on the road.Mike Yastrzemski hurt himself on a crucial play in the final game. He made a heroic effort trying to catch a pop fly that ended up just out of his reach and counted as a lucky double. The Yaz injury stinks for him and for the SF Giants as a whole, as he was playing really good baseball. In other news, today is Gary Sánchez opt-out day: he can opt out of his Minor League deal with the Giants if he's not added to the major league roster today. It's unlikely he's added, and the details as to why are discussed on the show.Find and follow Locked On Giants on your favorite podcast platforms:
