Julie Rosenberg talks to us today about her artisan foods marketplace, Julie's Beet. Her shop carries “culinary gems from around the world” and specifically seeks out brands that we won't find in the big stores. Her goal is to only sell the best of the best and to inspire people to consciously purchase their food, knowing the story behind it, and relishing in the flavors. The simple action that we can all take after today's episode is to shop at Julie's Beet and support artisan chefs and Julie. Five additional simple ideas that Julie shared are: Keep it local. Seek out foods that are grown in our local area, and are in season. Go off the beaten path. Rather than going to Starbucks, find a local coffee shop instead. At the Farmer's Market, choose one new thing to try, or tell our kids that we'll let them pick any one new thing to try. Have a good olive oil, salt and spice blend on hand at home, and use these to elevate meat or vegetables into artisan foods. Take time to read the story behind our food, before we buy it. How can the principles and practices of yoga help you be more effective as a leader? Julie Rosenberg, M.D. is a physician executive who works in the pharmaceutical industry where she oversees a multi-million-dollar global drug development program. In addition, Julie has devoted the last 16 years to the in-depth study and practice of yoga. She received her advanced teaching certification from Down Under Yoga in Boston in 2015, under the tutelage of Natasha Rizopoulos. In 2017, she was selected by Number 1 executive coach and leadership thinker Marshall Goldsmith from among 16,000 applicants as one of the MG 100 coaches. Enthusiastic and passionate about helping leaders ensure good health and to strengthen their professional leadership skills, Julie has become a highly sought-after keynote speaker, patient advocate, and Stakeholder Centered Leadership Coach to corporate executives and physicians. In today's conversation, we celebrate National Yoga Awareness Month (September) and discuss Julie's new book, Beyond the Mat in which she outlines the principles and practices of yoga, and how she has applied them in her personal and professional life; as a 25-year cancer survivor, overcoming vocal limitations and becoming a successful speaker, and as an international executive with a demanding travel schedule and large team to manage. We explore how yoga applies to leadership, the power of personal flexibility, the problems that many corporate executives and physicians face, and how to handle uncertainty and avoid burnout, even in the most difficult of situations. What makes Julie unique is that she comes from the corporate executive world and understands the challenges and demands of corporate life, and uses her expertise in yoga in that environment, bringing mindfulness and calm, in order to achieve greater results and empower leaders to operate from a place of enlightenment and confidence rather than anxiety and fear. Everyone can be an enlightened leader – Julie shares how. Key Takeaways The goal is to bring yoga off the mat and into your everyday life. Breath work helps build stamina and resilience. Seated poses and breath work throughout the day can prevent you from leaving the office stiff, tight and exhausted – and allows for greater agility in general. Pausing throughout the day helps improve your resiliency and be more grounded and less reactive. Do not underestimate the practice of gratitude – it is a science and can be expansive and help modulate your response to situations that otherwise make you unhappy. Enlightened leadership is a journey rather than a destination. The most difficult habit for successful leaders to practice is taking care of oneself and developing and cultivating a sense of self awareness. We think we know more about ourselves than we do.
