The stereotype of ‘rock bottom' kept me drinking. I believed the lie that if my drinking didn't look like a dire stereotype then I did not qualify for sobriety. This lie stopped me from seeing what alcohol had already taken from my life. Today we'll talk through chapter six of my book The Sober Shift, where I'll help you reframe the concept of ‘rock bottom' so that you can find a softer place to land. In this episode of Superpowers for Good, Julie Colombino-Billingham, Founder and CEO of Deux Mains, an affordable luxury goods company manufacturing ethical products in Haiti, shares her inspiring story. Julie's work demonstrates how business can be a force for good, especially in one of the most economically challenged countries in the Western Hemisphere.Julie didn't arrive in Haiti to start a business. After the devastating 2010 earthquake, she deployed as a trained disaster responder to help with relief efforts. What began as a short-term mission turned into a life-changing journey. “The women of Haiti were so strong, so brave, and so courageous,” Julie explained. “I really just wanted to be like them…I ended up staying and living there for five years and starting this business.”Deux Mains, which means “two hands” in French, is a testament to the power of collaboration and perseverance. The company manufactures luxury handbags, wallets, and other leather goods using deadstock leather and materials from responsible tanneries. These products, crafted by Haitian artisans earning a fair wage, are now sold in major retailers like Nordstrom and Kohl's. Despite the country's instability, Deux Mains continues to thrive. “The business is not only growing but flourishing under the leadership of my Haitian colleagues,” Julie said.Beyond exporting chic handbags, Deux Mains has a significant local impact. Last year, they manufactured and distributed 10,000 pairs of leather school shoes for Haitian children. The factory, powered entirely by solar energy, employs 45 full-time staff and serves as a model for sustainable development in Haiti.Julie's story is one of transformation—both personal and collective. Her journey highlights how listening to the needs of a community can inspire lasting change. “A woman said to me, ‘Hey, white lady, I don't want water. I need a job,'” Julie recalled. That moment shifted her perspective from short-term aid to creating long-term economic opportunities.Deux Mains proves that ethical fashion can make a global impact while empowering local communities. Julie's vision serves as a powerful reminder that meaningful change begins when we listen, act with purpose, and invest in people.tl;dr:Julie Colombino-Billingham founded Deux Mains after witnessing Haiti's resilience following the 2010 earthquake.Deux Mains creates ethical, sustainable luxury goods while employing Haitian artisans earning a living wage. The company's solar-powered factory produces products sold globally, including in Nordstrom and Kohl's.Julie credits her success to listening deeply to community needs, focusing on long-term economic impact. The episode highlights Julie's superpower of listening, offering actionable tips for cultivating this skill. How to Develop Deep Listening As a SuperpowerJulie's superpower is her ability to listen deeply and empathetically, enabling her to understand and act on the real needs of others. Reflecting on her early days in Haiti, she shared a pivotal moment: “A woman said to me, ‘Hey, white lady, I don't want any water. I need a job.'” That simple yet profound statement transformed Julie's approach, shifting her focus from short-term disaster relief to launching Deux Mains, a business creating sustainable jobs for Haitians. Listening, as Julie explained, “revolutionized my experience and my participation.”Julie shared a story that exemplifies her superpower in action. Early in her time in Haiti, she grew frustrated with the mess in the factory, asking, “Why is everything always a mess here?” Her Haitian business partner, Jolina, calmly replied, “We don't have any garbage cans.” This moment reminded Julie to step outside her own frame of reference and truly listen to her colleagues. By addressing such a simple, overlooked need, she cultivated a culture of collaboration and respect that continues to define Deux Mains.Tips for Developing Deep Listening:Believe that everyone in the room has valuable insights to contribute.Step outside your own perspective to understand others' realities.Ask open-ended questions to uncover underlying needs and concerns.Build trust by acting on the feedback you receive.Practice humility when faced with solutions that challenge your assumptions.By following Julie's example and advice, you can make deep listening a skill. With practice and effort, you could make it a superpower that enables you to do more good in the world.Remember, however, that research into success suggests that building on your own superpowers is more important than creating new ones or overcoming weaknesses. During today's episode, Richard explained his compelling vision for a community built on intentional mutual benefit—a concept that resonates deeply with me.Richard's new book, Birthing the Symbiotic Age, is the culmination of over two decades of work, blending personal experience, community organizing, and a belief in the interconnectedness of humanity and nature. He challenges the idea that we are separate, saying, “We're actually all connected…within our families, neighborhoods, local communities, nations, and worldwide.”This intentional mutual benefit, as Richard describes it, is a culture where every action, thought, and decision considers its impact on others. It's about making connection a core value, from small personal interactions to global systems. Richard explained, “Symbiotic culture…is a culture in which intentional mutual benefit between human beings and with nature becomes the norm at all scales.”He draws from practical experience, sharing stories of community transformation. Richard recounted his involvement in initiatives like the Nevada Micro-Enterprise Initiative, which provided low-income entrepreneurs with seed funding, mentorship, and technical assistance. These efforts exemplify his belief that mutual benefit can underpin economic and social systems, creating a “virtuous economy.”This vision aligns beautifully with the principles of impact crowdfunding, where investors and entrepreneurs unite to create positive change. Richard's work shows how embedding intentional mutual benefit into our economy has the power to transform not only individual lives but entire communities.Richard's book, Birthing the Symbiotic Age, offers a roadmap for rebuilding our culture with love and connection at its heart. As he said, “When we engage the world, we are coming from that deeper connected perspective.”For those interested in this vision, Richard's book is available at richardflyer.com. By embracing his ideas, we can take steps toward realizing this symbiotic age together.tl;dr:Richard Flyer shares a 20-year journey to create a symbiotic culture of intentional mutual benefit. He explains how his book, Birthing the Symbiotic Age, challenges the myth of separation in society.Richard highlights community-building efforts, including crime reduction and micro-financing initiatives. He describes his superpower: recognizing the intrinsic divinity or goodness in every individual.Richard provides actionable advice for fostering connection and building a culture of mutual benefit. How to Develop Recognizing the Divinity in Others As a SuperpowerRichard's superpower is the ability to see the divinity—or intrinsic goodness—in everyone. He explained, “The superpower is to see the truth that we're all made in the image of God…underneath all of the apparent polarization.” This perspective allows him to bridge divides and unite communities, focusing on the shared humanity that connects us all. Richard emphasized that this principle applies universally, regardless of one's spiritual or secular beliefs, making it a powerful tool for fostering connection and collaboration.Richard shared a transformative story of overcoming his personal biases to unite his community. In Reno, Nevada, he recognized his antipathy toward religious organizations was limiting his ability to include them in community-building efforts. To address this, he spent a year visiting various religious and spiritual groups, from Christian churches to Buddhist sanghas. This experience helped him see individuals beyond their labels, fostering greater understanding and collaboration. This shift enabled him to unite diverse groups to address shared challenges.Tips for Developing the Superpower:Attend events hosted by organizations or people you may disagree with to foster understanding.Practice small, intentional acts of kindness, such as holding the door open for others.Consciously remind yourself of the shared humanity in everyone, even those with opposing views.Reflect on personal biases and take steps to overcome them for greater connection.By following Richard's example and advice, you can make recognizing the divinity in others a skill. With practice and effort, you could make it a superpower that enables you to do more good in the world.Remember, however, that research into success suggests that building on your own superpowers is more important than creating new ones or overcoming weaknesses. It integrates insights from community development, economics, spirituality and faith traditions, and living systems to help people move beyond polarization toward shared purpose and practical collaboration. Rather than advancing ideology or top-down solutions, Symbiotic Culture emphasizes connecting the good already present in local communities—linking people, initiatives, and institutions so they can work together more effectively through shared values and virtues such as trust, mutual responsibility, and care. The work holds that lasting social renewal is both practical and spiritual, beginning not with systems alone but with people learning how to live, work, and solve problems together in meaningful ways.Website: richardflyer.comBiographical Information: Richard Flyer is an author, community-builder, and faith-rooted cultural strategist whose life's work bridges science, spirituality, and civic renewal. Trained as a biologist, he studied pilot whale and dolphin communication at UC Santa Cruz and San Diego State before earning an M.S. in Biology. His grounding in living systems science later became the foundation for Symbiotic Culture—a framework that integrates spiritual insight with practical tools for regenerative community life.Richard's career spans health, education, and grassroots leadership. He pioneered hyperbaric oxygen therapy programs in Nevada hospitals, taught in community colleges and detention facilities, and led nonprofits including the San Diego Food Bank, Neighbors United, and the Nevada Microenterprise Initiative. Internationally, he served with Sri Lanka's Sarvodaya Shramadana movement, supporting a national network of over 5,000 communities. His work draws inspiration from Jesus and the early church, Gandhi's village republics, and Václav Benda's idea of the Parallel Polis. For Richard, following Jesus is not about dogma, but about daily practice—learning to embody love, reconciliation, hospitality, and neighborliness in a divided world. He sees in Jesus not only the center of his faith, but a bridge across traditions, calling people into deeper connection and shared responsibility.Today, through Symbiotic Culture, Richard mentors leaders across faith, civic, and cultural spheres. In Birthing the Symbiotic Age, he offers a vision for a Global Commonwealth of 50,000 empowered communities—a parallel society rooted in love, justice, and mutual flourishing. He lives on O‘ahu, Hawaii with his wife Marta, drawing renewal from the islands, time with family, and the simple joy of Connecting the Good wherever he goes.LinkedIn Profile: linkedin.com/in/richard-flyer-6820727Personal Twitter Handle: @Richard_Flyer Personal Facebook Profile: facebook.com/richard.flyerInstagram Handle: @richard.flyerSupport Our SponsorsOur generous sponsors make our work possible, serving impact investors, social entrepreneurs, community builders and diverse founders. Aquinas is the great synthesizer of the natural law, but who exactly is he drawing from? Today, Dr. Randall Smith joins Ben Eriksen to discuss the various philosophers and theologians who influenced Aquinas' thought. Dr. Smith argues that Aristotle did not greatly influence Aquinas' conception of the natural law; instead, he believes that Cicero, Maimonides, and Philo of Alexandria were more pivotal. This enlightening conversation reveals the great depth of the natural law tradition and how we can contribute to this tradition in the modern era. Mommy Wine Culture is a trend manufactured in boardrooms by Big Alcohol. I explore this deeply in the second chapter of my book, The Sober Shift, and today on The Weekend Reset I'll give you an overview of what I found in my research so that you can clearly see how we as moms have been manipulated to believe that alcohol could ‘help' us with motherhood. Alcohol was never here to help us. It was here to get us addicted in order to grow Big Alcohol's profits. Once you see this, it is so much easier to say goodbye to alcohol for good. Persuade and Influence for More Effective Selling Have you ever presented a perfectly logical argument, only to have it completely ignored? Most of us believe that if we just explain the facts clearly enough, people will change their minds. But the reality is that decision-making is rarely purely rational; it is deeply rooted in psychology, emotion, and trust. This week on A New Direction with Coach Jay, we are shattering the myth that persuasion is just about having the “gift of gab” and revealing the actual science behind why people say “yes.” I am thrilled to be joined live by negotiation expert Andres Lares, author of The 4-Step Process to Influence People and Decisions. As the Managing Partner at the Shapiro Negotiations Institute, Andres has spent his career dissecting the mechanics of influence. He doesn’t just share theories; he provides a practical, tactical blueprint that you can use immediately. Whether you are leading a team, closing a sale, or simply trying to navigate family dynamics, Andres is going to walk us through how to move from being ignored to being indispensable. In this episode, we are diving deep into the “Persuasion Cycle.” We will explore why credibility is the currency of influence, how to ethically leverage emotion, and why logic only works after you've established a connection. Andres will break down his proven 4-step framework, teaching you how to prepare for high-stakes conversations and how to structure your communication so that your ideas aren’t just heard—they are accepted and acted upon. This is about ethical influence that builds long-term relationships, not manipulation. Don't leave your success up to chance—join us! If you want to stop guessing and start influencing, you cannot afford to miss this conversation. Let's take A New Direction together! Andres Lares book, “Persuade: The 4-Step Process to Influence People and Decisions” is an outstanding read for anyone in sales or negotiations. This book is backed by their own research, as well as research of others. It is timeless and practical. Is it a sales tool kit? Yes! And so much more! In Persuade, Andres and his colleagues from their research outline the 4 Step process to increasing your sales, closing, and influencing others. This book is not just about business, it applies to everyone who is ever been in negotiations…that may even include your children, spouse, or significant other. The 4 Step Process builds on each in the form of a pyramid. So, the base level is “Build Credibility”. Wait! Before you assume credibility there is more to it than what you may be thinking. If you said the word, “trust” as part of that equation you would be correct. But Andres Lares et al. break it down on how to develop trust. And it’s not just with words; it is also non-verbal as well. The next stage that comes next is “Engage Emotion”. Fact is, we don’t make our decisions with logic. That has been demonstrated time and time again. If you want to really get to the meat of getting people to make a decision you need to understand their emotions, but you also need to understand yours as well. This is where Persuade really differentiates itself from other “sales how to” books. The research is quite robust. The third level is demonstrating logic, and the top level is “Facilitate Action” or the close. I believe this to be one of the best books I have read. Personally, I have used this on my sales teams and found it to be so beneficial to build confidence and increase their ability to close more. Giving up alcohol originally felt to Mary Alice Stephens like leaving so many things behind - ‘Fun Mary', date nights with her husband, friendships that centered around wine, and a father who expressed his love through alcohol. Now fourteen years sober, Mary Alice can look back and confidently say that the leap was so worth facing her fears. Mary is the author of the new book Uncorked: A Memoir of Letting Go and Starting Over. In the book and in our conversation she shares the wisdom she has gleaned from almost a decade and a half of sobriety, the things she still reaches for in her sobriety toolkit to stay confidently sober in her current life, and wonderful advice on how to navigate your first sober holiday season. The biggest lightbulb moment for Mary was the realization that her behavior wasn't ‘her'. It was the alcohol. Placing the blame squarely where it deserved to be gave Mary the freedom to make a different choice, and she is not looking back! So much of my sobriety is rooted in gratitude. Not inauthentic gratitude that feels forced, but the true deeply rooted gratitude I feel as I'm present for each beautiful everyday moment of life. With each passing year I find that my well of gratitude deepens. And the women I've interviewed who've been sober for 10, 15, 20 years? They've confirmed it - your gratitude in sobriety will only continue to grow. It does not max out. So if you're in early sobriety and you're not feeling the gratitude yet? Keep going. You have taken a brave leap of faith, and it is going to get better, and better, and better. Does sobriety during the upcoming holiday season feel overwhelming? Sign up for my 10-Day Holiday Series! One of the biggest things I leaned on in early sobriety was yoga - especially sessions led by Kristin McGee. She was instrumental in helping me move through that first stage of sobriety, and today she's here!! Kristin will share with us the importance of connecting with your body in order to tap into your inner voice. Then, we'll talk about dating without alcohol, the wild reality of alcohol in the wellness space, the power of navigating grief through movement, and her transition away from Peloton to start her own brand. Kristin recently launched Kristin McGee Movement. Go check it out! Follow Kristin on Instagram @kristinmcgeeDoes sobriety during the upcoming holiday season feel overwhelming? Your sobriety isn't a committee decision. It's OK if your family and friends don't understand.Yes, it's scary. If your family has always bonded over alcohol, it can feel lonely to be sober during the holiday season. It's a challenging shift to put yourself first and not people-please to make others comfortable during the holidays. But believe me, you can do it. Today, I'll discuss how you can still be involved in holiday festivities, how to invite your family members to support you, and ideas for starting new traditions that don't include alcohol. And remember...you're not alone. Need even more holiday sober support? I created a (free!) 10 Day Holiday Series to support you every morning. Click here to sign up! Registered Nurse and Sobriety Coach Kate Vitela is here to remind you that no matter where you are on your sobriety journey, you are always allowed to change. Kate shares the story of how alcohol became a way of life for her as a young nurse and how her attempt at switching to cannabis wound up unraveling her life in a way that led to full sobriety. She also shares about her experiences with AA. Originally a program that changed her life, Kate felt after a couple of years of sobriety that she no longer wanted to identify as an ‘alcoholic'. This choice led her to unexpected backlash that led her to step away from the program and develop her own. Kate is now a sober coach and sober podcaster focusing on a message that blends science, spirituality, real stories, and humor to create a recovery approach that's authentic and empowering. There's a problematic message in our society that tells us that we only need to quit drinking if our drinking looks ‘that bad'. You know the kind - Meg Ryan in When A Man Loves a Woman or Nicholas Cage in Leaving Las Vegas. This message can cause so many challenges for women on their sobriety journeys. It can make them second guess themselves about whether or not they need to quit drinking, even as their personal relationship with alcohol becomes more and more negative. But what if you reframed this message? What if you stopped asking if you were ‘that bad', and started asking if alcohol was that bad? How would this change your perspective?
