Beyond the Mat is a movie that appears NOWHERE in the 1999 box office charts, mainly because it only screened once in 1999 in Los Angeles on October 22, thanks in no small part to Vince McMahon fuckery (though it did get a limited release in March of 2000). Beyond the Mat was directed by Barry Blaustein, an accomplished comedy screenwriter, and it features the real-life stories of wrestling legends Terry Funk, Mick Foley, and Jake the Snake Roberts, Though it wasn't a commercial hit, it received a mostly favorable critical response, and has gone on to become a beloved documentary, especially among wrestling fans. Joining John and Julia to discuss it is Ross Benes, author of the upcoming book 1999: The Year Low Culture Conquered America and Kickstarted our Bizarre Times. His book will be available everywhere in April. You can learn more about Ross and his work on his website: www.rossbenes.com

Join us as we sit down with J. Brown, Founder of the Abhyasa Yoga center in New York (now closed), he is also a writer and podcast host of industry-leading J. Brown Yoga Talks. For more than 25 years J has been developing techniques to teach people how to practice yoga in a deeper and more fulfilling way. We hear how the profound grief from the loss of his mother prompted J to make a promise to himself about living a better life - and how yoga became the vehicle for that intention. His exploration of various yoga styles, from the physical rigor of Ashtanga to the precision of Iyengar, set the stage for a transformative path. From the studios of New York to the spiritual havens of India, J's experiences with the teachings of Swami P. Saraswati offered a paradigm shift. Learn how he ultimately found his way to the tradition of TKV Desikachar and T Krishnamacharya, and adopted a more introspective and therapeutic approach to yoga, focusing on breath-centered movements and present-moment awareness. His narrative powerfully underscores the importance of adapting yoga to suit individual needs, turning it into a powerful tool for deeper self-care and spiritual inquiry. Navigating the commercial pressures of the yoga industry, J candidly discusses the challenges of maintaining authenticity, especially in the wake of a global pandemic. We reflect on the evolution of the yoga industry in America, the significance of fostering genuine community, and the launch of his new yoga center in Easton, Pennsylvania. This episode provides a rich, multifaceted view of yoga's impact, making it a must-listen for anyone seeking to deepen their own practice. jbrownyoga.comthebirdhouseyoga.comLiked what you heard? "If yoga, breathwork and meditation are the way to establish the internet connection and improve the clarity of that connection, BEYOND THE MAT is the way to upgrade the operating system, upgrade the browser, download new updates and create a new map by which to explore the boundless internet of human potential."This Episode outlines a game-changing and proven approach to holistic self-mastery tailored for those navigating the pressures of urban life, corporate demands and general overwhelm. We discuss the necessity for us to embrace practices and modalities that take us "beyond the mat", to empower us in our efforts of wellness and personal growth, complementary to, not replacing, essential technologies such as Yoga, Breathwork or Meditation, but using those as starting points for journeys of self-awareness and self-knowledge that are informed by psychology and neuroscience but remain approachable and digestible enough for us to become the debuggers of our own complex operations systems. "Beyond the Mat" is a project that leverages the foundational benefits of Yoga, Breathwork, and Meditation to address the deeper complexities of our personal narratives. It enhances self-understanding and upgrades our internal dialogue, giving all yoga practitioners a new dimension in wellness practices. We end our look at the world of wrestling with an actual documentary, made by an actual documentary filmmaker. "Beyond The Mat," well produced, well financed documentary that not only had unprecedented access to the WWF (still a Federation at the time), but had an actual theatrical release (yes, Jim actually saw this in the theater). So, lets close out this chapter in style.

The day after we talked about a classic animated film set in the ocean---Finding Nemo---Ryan posts a solo gab about another highly-enjoyable seafaring adventure comedy called Moana. The Disney blockbuster is formulaic, but it's fun and fantastically well-made. So, yes, this monologue spends 10 minutes yipping about Moana, but the real thrust of this 509th episode of Have You Ever Seen is a breakdown of Dwayne Johnson's career in film. Is The Rock actually "the biggest star in the world", as his wrestling colleagues have been saying for years? Ryan deluges you with facts and figures to analyze just how true or not that "biggest star in the world' statement is. Go to "sparkplug.coffee/hyes" and you can save 20% off your next order by using that "hyes" promo code. This episode---like our other 2023 podcasts---is available on YouTube. These solo shows are always just the same audio you can download from your podcast avenue of choice, but occasionally Ryan and Bev sit down for some on-camera chat time for the episodes we do together. “You need humility to become great… You got to be a humble beast. You got to be a beast where you need to be a beast— but be humble in spirit when it comes to winning and be humble in losing.” —Mark Cox When we become a successful entrepreneur, it is easy to fall into the trap called ego. We've created something from nothing. We might not have had a lot of money to start with but we have a lot now. We've beaten the odds and used our intelligence and charisma to navigate the world around us. But the success we've achieved means nothing if we lack these two things: humility and grit. The success of our business is mainly dependent, not on our skills, but on our integrity and values. This means that we should be the embodiment of humility and grit— the willingness to do the hard yards to achieve success and the courage to own our failures. In this episode, Daniel sits with Beyond the Mat author, Mark Cox to talk about what becoming a humble beast means for entrepreneurs. They also talk about the importance of going to the process of growth rather than relying on instant gratification, why we should hire a mentor, why we should not blame our inadequacies for our failures, the ego trap, and the 5 values we should strive to live by. On today's show, we are talking about yoga with Daisy Thayer! According to the National Institutes of Health, there is scientific evidence that shows that yoga supports stress management, mental health, mindfulness, healthy eating, weight loss and quality of sleep. Yoga provides a retreat from our busy and chaotic lives, while providing many mental and physical benefits. Yoga develops inner awareness. It helps us to focus our attention on our body's abilities at the present moment, while also helping us to develop our breath and strength of mind and body. Surveys have shown that people who practice yoga are more aware of their bodies than those who don't practice yoga. People also tend to be more satisfied with and less critical of their bodies, promoting more positive body image and self esteem. Join us as we talk about the power of yoga with Daisy!
