Scott talks to Ashtanga yoga teacher Ty Landrum about yoga and how it ‘ruined his life' in the best possible way. ________ We'd like to invite you to join our growing monthly Stillpoint Yoga community. We teach in-person in London Bridge and live stream online Ashtanga Yoga assisted self practice and guided classes, with weekly yoga clinics and philosophy sessions guided by Scott Johnson and the Stillpoint teaching faculty. We also have a growing library of on-demand content. It's a beautiful way to navigate these times… Also, consider joining our Patreon community. We share these podcasts every 2 weeks and would love your feedback, input and support. You can even join a monthly live call to share your thoughts. _________ Ty is renowned for his understanding of philosophy and academic knowledge. He never liked school, but after being awarded a wrestling scholarship Ty decided he'd go to college. While there, he found himself wrestling with the problem of the general disorientation he experienced within his day-to-day life. Philosophy seemed to offer clues to the answers he was searching for, and so he continued to study, and now holds a PhD in the subject. He attended his first yoga class while he was at college. He was experiencing depression, and his friend encouraged him to go to a class with Jennifer Eliot. Ty experienced something immediate and visceral in that yoga class, something he'd been grasping for in his studies but newer fully realised. It changed his way of relating to philosophy, and it equipped him with the tools he needed to process the deep grief he had been carrying following the loss of two important people in his life. In this sensitive and intelligent conversation, Ty shares about the clumsiness of academics, the wisdom of the body, and the primacy of human touch. He talks about the revelation of meeting Richard Freeman with his syncretic approach to philosophy. He discusses different wisdom traditions that, despite superficial differences, are united in their overall goal of spreading compassion. For Ty, yoga has been a path to intimacy, communion and relationship with all aspects of his life. You can find out more about Ty's work here. ‘Ty is one of the most intelligent and wise Ashtanga teachers in the field of yoga at the moment. The way he weaves yoga asana and philosophy together through stories, wisdom and language is beautiful and I wanted to capture how he got there. This conversation actually weaves like its own story, capturing the real spirit of how yoga has evolved in Ty's life. Bring a note book. There is so much to notice...' Richard Freeman and Mary Taylor need no introduction. In this episode, we talk about the dissolution of our minds, bodies, and practices in the face of time. How do we let go of the physicality of the practice? We were curious after 50 years of yoga, how they've maintained their enthusiasm in the face of age. What we heard was extremely enlightening, and surprisingly heart-opening. Your whole body and mind are an offering. You are never throwing it away… But rather, allowing it to shine no matter what state it's in. Practice itself is an offering. The whole idea of offering is sacrifice. It means you're giving something of value to others. And when you really do this deeply, it effects your body and mind in a profound way. To give it all away as an offering to others is the whole purpose of the practice. These two beautiful souls have an incredible way of grounding their spiritual experiences in the present moment and anchoring them in reality. We may be seduced by dissolution, but if we follow Arjuna's example, we will continue to do our dharma, without being motivated by any sense of accomplishment, on our quest for unity — to live in love. We invite you to spend some time with us, watching nature unfold and reality drip through the cracks, with Richard Freeman and Mary Taylor. Their insights and presence is a true joy to be treasured in the face of impermanence. “The basic mistake is that we've reduced ourselves and we've reduced others to just ideas about ourselves and others, and that's really sad… What we are is way beyond the ideas we have about who we are.” - Richard Freeman We spoke about Lojong meditation practice (often translated into English as “Mind Training”) from the Tibetan Buddhist tradition. Mary explains that when religion is working well it allows us to feel our vulnerability. Trusting in something bigger than oneself is a vital part of becoming more of a whole human being.” - Mary Taylor We spoke about the difference between “taking refuge” and “surrendering,” what the Bhagavad Gita and the Wizard of Oz have in common, as well as how they've keep love alive within their relationship after all these years… and how you can too! Time is running out, apparently it's a good thing, because it gives us the motivation to pull ourselves off center stage and find out who we really are, why we're in this body, and what we can do to help others. “The practice that's appropriate for you in any given moment is the one that helps you be authentic. To join together the disparate parts of who you are and show up. And show up, not in order to be the star of the show, but to show up to be a servant. To be there and be of service to others.” - Mary Taylor If you'd like to keep learning and going deeper into the esoteric teachings inside the Bhagavad Gita, we would invite you to register for Richard and Mary's upcoming online course: Living Yoga: Embodying the Teachings of the Bhagavad Gita I'm offering a couple of amazing bonuses when you join the course through me! - harmonyslater.com/richard-freeman-mary-taylor-living-yoga Registration opens this TUESDAY, September 21st! Here we explore the backbone that forms the basis for yogic life. These days many think of yoga as a purely physical practice. Still others are interested in yogic philosophy but are not really sure where to begin. Well, whether it is investigating the keys for leading a yogic life or studying the foundations of yogic thought, the starting point is the ten principles of yama and niyama, the yogic code of morality. We shall review both the practical applications as well as the theoretical roots. In this episode, we have the pleasure of talking with Kiesha Battles of I Am Yoga and co-creator of the "Yoga Ethics for Transforming Racism" program with Kristine Kaoverii Weber of Subtle Yoga. "It's the conversation that we hope that people are open to having because with this Yoga, you know it's more than doing, it's taking action and what we are trying to do is take that action of just sharing more of the tools and the practices that can benefit us in this world. We both have this understanding that there are many paths to Yoga, and not all of them focus on the ethical principles. So what we want to do is share with people that they are there." Her Yoga journey began when she found a flyer in the hallway of her graduate program in Asian Studies. She started out studying the Iyengar method and after moving to Charlotte, began practicing more Vinyasa and Power Yoga. She's completed two 200-hour Yoga Teacher programs, the first being with Kristine and the second with her mentor Maya Breuer. She's also completed a 300-hour program with Maya and is currently in another with Embodied Philosophy. Presently, she is the Yoga Director at Charlotte Family Yoga and founder of I Am Yoga where she leads Yoga Teacher Training programs and provides Accessible Yoga. Kiesha is a full time Yoga teacher with over 20 years of experience. Before COVID, she was teaching 20 classes a week to over 300 students. During COVID, she found herself with more time on her hands by not driving from class to class. This intersection paired with the momentum of the Black Lives Matter movement provided the opportunity to co-create with Kristine. Kiesha's study of Yoga Philosophy began when developing her research paper for Kristine's 200-hour Training Program on "Why Don't African Americans Do Yoga." This research led her to Maya Breuer, her "Grandmother of Yoga." She attended her Yoga Retreat for Women of Color and began private studies with her afterwards on Living Yoga. She studied intimately with Maya for years going deeper and deeper with the Yamas and Niyamas(Ethical Principles of Yoga). She then began practicing with Kelley Palmer in Charlotte who was integrating the Yoga principles more directly. This partnership with Kristine reminds Kiesha of Yin and Yang. Not only by the styles they teach, Kristine teaching more of an active style and Kiesha teaching Yin, but by who they are as women. Each present the Yamas or Niyamas as it relates to racism, humanities, and ethics, paired with a physical practice. All proceeds go towards scholarship foundations for BIPOC organizations; Black Yoga Teacher Alliance and I Am Yoga. After 1 month of offering the program, they have been able to contribute $3k to each organization. She believes this program gives the participant a path to change and understand racism through the lens of the ethical principles of Yoga. "What are your values? What are the values that you hold true that you would stand your ground for, that you would fight for, that you would be willing to die for. For some people in our path, it could be God, it could be Spirit. For some people it's love and for some people it's country. But what are you holding true as a value outside of who you vote for?" Maya Breuer has been influential in Kiesha's work and from her she found T.K.V Desikachar's book "The Heart of Yoga" which has done the same for her. Candace Jennings, her partner in I Am Yoga was influential in developing her 200-hour Yoga Teacher Training. Kiesha enjoys working with everybody as she believes working with everybody provides her an opportunity to learn. She wants to Heal Charlotte because she is a loyalist. She moved to the Carolinas during her adolescent years and is now so embedded in the community here, she wants Charlotte to be well. In Charlotte, she's inspired by Candace Jennings, her business partner and bodyworker, her Mom as she has found healing in the extra time spent with her after surgery, interactions with her friends during COVID, and Key Baldwin, her Reiki Master. Dr. Tony Peters is another bodyworker in Charlotte who Kiesha appreciates. "If you are looking for healing, ask for it, there are so many resources out there and there's no one right way of healing." Embodying the Yoga Sutras: Support, Direction, Space with Ranju Roy & David Charlton This book is both profoundly practical and imbued with the classic yogic philosophy. Practice and philosophy are intertwined at every level, for, as the authors write, “how you place your thoughts is as important where you place your limbs.” This vibrant approach to an ancient tradition is accessible and contemporary will be an essential reference and guide for experienced practitioners and teachers. Ranju, born in Udaipur, Rajasthan, is of mixed Indian and English heritage and was brought up in England. He worked for 12 years in England’s National Health Service as an art therapist and family therapist and has considerable experience in counseling and therapy with individuals and groups. Although he travels extensively in India, he lives in Wellington, England, where he and his wife, Lindy, run their own studio, Yoga Mala. David grew up in London and originally studied mechanical engineering. Before pursuing yoga full time, he worked as a software engineer. Always interested in yoga and Eastern philosophy, he completed an MA in Buddhist philosophy in 1993 and has traveled widely in India and Southeast Asia. Welcome to a year of Life is a Festival! It has been 12 months and 40 conversations since I launched this project, and what a project it has become! In fact today’s episode opens with the announcement of some incredible news for the show: I have been asked to perform a live version of Life is a Festival for Spotify’s end of year parties in London and Stockholm next month. This exciting honor bubbled up as life’s treasures often do, thanks to the support and belief of you, my community. I will publish those interviews together as a special Holiday episode so keep you ears open for that. Today’s episode is perfect for an anniversary. If there’s one resounding theme of Life is a Festival, it is integration. Indeed, integrating festivals, psychedelics and even our regular yoga practice into our daily, sometimes prosaic, experience is the key to living life as a festival. As my mother used to say, only Hanuman the Monkey Man can leap from peak to peak. The rest of us must wander down into the deep valleys in order to ascend to lofty heights. But perhaps we might someday become like Hanuman, if we can only remember our true power. This is brief but mighty. I am interviewing my yoga teacher, Janet Stone. With her expertise in all aspects of the eight limbed path, Janet manages to pack a curriculum of knowledge into 40 minutes of casual conversation. Now in her 18th year at Yoga Tree in San Francisco, Janet teaches around the world including pretty much every yoga festival in the world from Bali Spirit to Wanderlust. On the podcast we talk about how to take yoga off the mat and assimilate asanas into our daily lives. We discuss the importance of humor and service, including Janet’s passionate dedication to the environment. Finally Janet tells the story of Hanuman, whose deep devotion to Sita and Rama gave him the power to leap all the way to the island of Sri Lanka. From Burning Man to the bake sale, Janet Stone teaches us to live life like a festival both on the mat and off it. When you think of a widow - I bet an elderly woman comes to mind. Death is a seldom talked about topic and widows and widowers seem to get lost by the wayside. At any age, what do you do when you suddenly lose your spouse? Is it more difficult when you are of an age that people don't expect that to happen? What are the challenges that no one talks about? Will things ever be the same? Where does one go for support? My guest has been through it all. She became a widow at a young age and is no stranger to death. Hear her story of moving through grief and coming out on the other side. You are not alone. Kirsten Joy Burch started her professional career as a medical assistant / office nurse in Dallas and Denton, she ran business operations for a large hospice in Missouri, and came back to Dallas for a career in finance & sales operations in the software industry during the booming late '90s. A wave of death came into her life around 2011, and she lost her step dad, godfather, and father from emphysema, pneumonia, and small cell carcinoma. Two months after her father died in her arms, her husband developed brain cancer. He was 40. She quit her corporate job to become his caregiver. Counseling and Yoga Therapy was her tool to stay functional. A short while after her husband passed away, she began a 26 month intensive studying the science and philosophy behind why the yoga was working so well for her; She was healing, and regaining mental capacity steadily. Kirsten studied ParaYoga with Rod Stryker, and was initiated into the tradition October 2014. She continued her studies in ParaYoga, and the her Ayurveda Lifestyle Counselor certification in 2015 with Arpita Shah of Om Yoga Journey and have certifications in Yoga4Cancer, and Yoga for Anxiety & Depression. Episode 125 of the podcast comes to you LIVE from Bhakti Fest 2018. Dive in deep to many core topics of life in the modern world as seen through the spiritual and sometimes scientific viewpoints of Deepak Chopra, Shiva Rea and Jai Uttal. These three are icons of Eastern Spirituality as it's practiced in the West. Between the three of them they have touched countless thousands of people striving to understand their place in this wild world and how to better their relationship in it. I moderated the panel in front of a packed house that was full of beaming energy and tons of love. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did! Intro rant - The poison as a result of injecting dogmatic religion into spiritual gatherings. Jai Uttal - Jai Uttal (born June 12, 1951) is an American musician. He is a Grammy-nominated singer and “a pioneer in the world music community with his eclectic East-meets-West sound.” He is a “sacred music composer, recording artist, multi-instrumentalist, and ecstatic vocalist, [who] combines influences from India with American rock and jazz to create a stimulating and exotic multicultural fusion that is truly world spirit music.” Shiva Rea - Movement is life for Shiva Rea, M.A, global prana vinyasa teacher, activist, and innovator in the evolution of vinyasa yoga around the world from large-scale festivals and conferences to unplugged retreats. She has taught thousands of students, teachers, and movers and shakers how to integrate yoga as a way of life. As founder of Prana Vinyasa & Samudra Global School for Living Yoga, she integrates the roots of vinyasa, yoga, ayurveda, and tantra in creative and life-transforming online courses, workshops, retreats, and trainings. Her studies in the Krishnamacharya lineage, kalarippayatu, world dance, yogic arts, and somatic movement infuse her approach to living yoga and embodying the flow. Shiva has collaborated across many fields and is known for offering the synthesis form of Vinyasa Flow throughout the world, bringing the roots of yoga alive for modern practitioners in creative, dynamic, and life-transforming ways for over 25 years around the globe. Deepak Chopra - Chopra studied medicine in India before emigrating to the United States in 1970 where he completed residencies in internal medicine and endocrinology. As a licensed physician, he became chief of staff at the New England Memorial Hospital (NEMH) in 1980.[7] He met Maharishi Mahesh Yogi in 1985 and became involved with the Transcendental Meditation movement (TM). He resigned his position at NEMH shortly thereafter to establish the Maharishi Ayurveda Health Center.[8] Chopra gained a following in 1993 after he was interviewed on The Oprah Winfrey Show about his books.[9] He then left the TM movement to become the executive director of Sharp HealthCare's Center for Mind-Body Medicine and in 1996 he co-founded the Chopra Center for Wellbeing.
*Spoiler Alert* There will be crude language and queef jokes in this episode. There will also be a whole lotta heart, wisdom and substance. I’m diving deep in this episode with my dear friend and yogi mermaid, Shannon Brasovan. In this interview, we explore what it means to live your yoga in ever-widening circles of impact - examining our personal lives as well as our capacity and impact in our communities and beyond to the global stage. As we follow that thread, we touch on a number of important and pertinent themes in this moment of our life and culture like understanding the karmic ripples of our choices, examining our privilege and complicity in racism, the gifts within our shadows, and the necessity of gratitude. Shannon is the CYO (Chief Yoga Officer) for Practice Indie Yoga, a local Indianapolis yoga studio who is a part of NapTown Fitness- a fitness network helping people challenge the body, inspire the mind and entertain the soul through wellness. Éowyn Ahlstrom first encountered meditation and yoga more than twenty years ago and has been practicing avidly ever since. She has made mindfulness practice a central priority in her life, attending many silent meditation retreats and yoga practice courses, as well as deeply studying both ancient and modern texts regarding these practices. Éowyn currently serves as the guiding teacher for the mindfulness communities of the Lancaster First Unitarian Church and the Gardner Unitarian Universalist Society, both in central Massachusetts. Based at Listening Wellness Center in Barre, she teaches regionally and is a part-time faculty member at the Center for Mindfulness. At Listening Wellness Center, Éowyn has developed an innovative, in-depth, nine-month program to re-integrate yoga and meditation, entitled Living Yoga, Living Mindfully. Her approach to practice and teaching is holistic, with a strong emphasis on embodiment. Prior to full-time teaching, she was on staff at the Insight Meditation Society for seven years, serving in the areas of communication and development. Silent retreat remains a priority for Éowyn, who devotes at least one month each year to that way of practice. Most recently, she is working on a book about Yoga and Meditation. As Rosie mentions in her bio, she was raised in East LA in the 90’s. As you may not know, that was a high-time for gang violence in Los Angeles. “Reading and researching back to that time, there were about 450-500 different gangs around my area. I was raised in an environment of fear. Hearing gun shots daily, was a very normal thing.” Not only growing up in the pure neighborhood chaos, but Rosie was also personally raised in an alcoholic household. Not knowing at the time of course, but all of which has turned her into an insanely independent, radical human being! She takes us back to her days of stressful events, anxiety-ridden habits and her depressed surroundings. Like most of the kids/teens her age in the area, Rosie got caught up in drugs and alcohol, skipping class and unethical behavior. “I was quickly becoming a product of my environment.” At the young age of 6, Rosie witnessed her first drive by shooting. Having to self-regulate to calm her nerves, she reminisces on how she remembered her breathing technique in that moment and how it soon became a part of her daily habits. Having developed anxiety and panic attacks, this breathing-form became a norm…rapidly. Fast forwarding into her late-teens/early 20’s, Rosie took it upon herself to get healthy. No extra “push” no pressure, just the shear desire to be better. “A friend of mine suggested I run a marathon, but I hated running. I thought to myself 'The only time I remember running, was away from something…most likely the authority.'” Going to school full-time, working full-time and indulging herself, headfirst into yoga teacher training, Rosie was a busy young girl to say the least. Rosie’s whirl-wind background is extremely inspiring and powerful. She has made something out of nothing, and continues to go above and beyond in her life and work. “We are all born with limitless potential, we all have a place in this world, it is part of our journey to be radically curious, radically inspired and be radically loved.” In This Episode You Will Learn: Overcoming fear Curiosity Perseverance Trauma Anxiety Stress Depression Breathing technical Self regulation Meditation Yoga Resources: Radically Loved Podcast Radically Loved Yoga Teacher Mentorship Program Looking for radical life changes?
