Born in Nigeria, Iroro grew up watching nature documentaries from all around the world, planting the seeds for her future love of biology. Her big breakthrough happened when she signed up for a research course in Uganda which was led by a UK organization. After years of searching, she finally found what she was looking for – hands-on biological research with bats. After her Master’s in the UK, Iroro returned to Nigeria to study the status of bats for her Ph.D. During what seemed like a normal field day, Iroro made the discovery of a lifetime. She successfully trapped a short-tailed roundleaf bat, a species that hadn’t been seen in the country for 45 years. However, her elation was soon squandered. Later that same evening, they could tell something was wrong. In the distance, they saw a fire heading their way and they had to leave the forest…fast. Since that moment, Iroro has been working diligently learning everything she can about this rare bat, and collaborate with local communities to keep them alive. A proposed concentrated animal feeding operation (CAFO) in Burnett County, Wisconsin, is slated to house 26,000 hogs and produce millions of gallons of liquid manure every year. Residents fear the irreparable damage a facility of that size could do to their air, land, and waterways, as well as to their property values and the local economy, and many fear there's nothing they can do to stop it. As part of TRNN's special collaboration with In These Times magazine for “The Wisconsin Idea,” TRNN Editor-in-Chief Maximillian Alvarez traveled with Cameron Granadino (TRNN) and Hannah Faris (In These Times) to Burnett and Polk counties to speak with farmers and residents in the area about their underreported struggle to protect their communities from the factory farming industry. In this interview, we speak with local farmer and beekeeper Kristy Lynn Allen about the damage the industrialization of farming has done to agriculture in general, and about the damage the new CAFO would do specifically to farmers like her. Allen is the founder of The Beez Kneez, LLC, and serves as president of the local chapter of the Wisconsin Farmers Union. #BigAgriculture #Farming #IndependentFarmers #FactoryFarming #Rural Pre-production:Maximillian AlvarezSimon Davis-CohenHannah FarisCameron GranadinoStudio:Cameron GranadinoStephen FrankPost-production:Cameron GranadinoStephen FrankKayla RivaraThe Wisconsin Idea is an independent reporting project of People's Action Institute, Citizen Action of Wisconsin and In These Times.Help us continue producing radically independent news and in-depth analysis by following us and making a small donation: Donate: https://therealnews.com/donate-ytSign up for our newsletter: https://therealnews.com/nl-ytLike us on Facebook: https://facebook.com/therealnewsFollow us on Twitter: https://twitter.com/therealnews
Thanks to an enormous international effort, there are currently nine rhino embryos in production, and now the team are under pressure to birth a calf before the remaining females perish. It may seem like a lot of pressure, but Dr. Thomas Hildebrandt is confident and says it's his moral obligation as a scientist to save the species.

As the wise angel Lady Gaga once said: 'I'm on the Edge!' - and then Survivor said 'same, bro.' We're out here on the Edge of Extinction and we have some very mixed feelings. We're working through our wide range of opinions on Survivor's 38th season and having a hoot along the way. Not only are we talking extensively about the theme and the adjustments we would have made, but we're also touching on returning players, new advantages, and how the big twist effected our impressions of the winner. We're starting the whole episode off with a chat about merge buff colors, kicking off the episode to be a great time. Plus, we're vibe checking Jeff per usual, speaking our truth about Rick Devens, and swooning over Wardog (if you don't believe us, look him up on instagram -- the man is a 10). Six endangered North Atlantic right whales died in June, four of them last week alone. This brings Georgia's official state marine mammal even closer to extinction. Researchers estimate that just 411 North Atlantic right whales remain. Six of them dying in one month — among them, three of breeding age — is significant.
We have conquered the Edge of Extinction and are here to talk all about the season that left everyone a little speechless. Jarrod, Rossi and surprise guest Colin sit and chat about their favourite players, how well the edge of extinction played out, and debate how many idols would be appropriate. We also make sure to share our thoughts on the upcoming season and its Mount Rushmore statues, question the unbalanced editing of the players, and offer up better solutions how to handle the game's unpredictability. We also speak about the legacy that Reem and Rheem have already formed and seriously ponder if a first boot player managed to make it to the jury. You know, sometimes it takes a while for a podcast to become iconic and sometimes you instantly know when one is, download now to figure it out.★ Support this podcast on Patreon ★
We're back to kick off another season of Survivor with the premiere recap of 'Edge of Extinction'. Was a 60 minute premiere too short to cram 14 new players, 4 returning players, a new twist and countless stories into? Did Colin already forget most of these players 6 days later? Did Rossi forget most of these new players 20 minutes later? Why are the returning players so random this time around? Is the twist designed just to guarantee a returning player wins? What are our brilliant theories on how this twist can actually work? Who is Reem, what is Rheem, and are they a new sponsor to the show? We were given the choice to give up on Survivor or stay in the game, and time and time again we keep coming back, so enjoy our recaps while they last?★ Support this podcast on Patreon ★
Thom van Dooren‘s new book is an absolute must-read. (I was going to qualify that with a “…for anyone who…” and realized that it really needs no qualification.) Flight Ways: Life and Loss at the Edge of Extinction (Columbia University Press, 2014) is a beautifully written and evocative meditation on extinction. The book offers (and implicates us in) stories about five groups of birds – albatrosses, vultures, Little Penguins, whooping cranes, and Hawaiian crows – that build upon one another and collectively enable us to explore and re-imagine what, where, and how extinction is, and why that matters. Van Dooren emphasizes the importance of storytelling to understanding and inhabiting the world, and the book's five “extinction stories” each bring to life the entanglements of avian, human, and other beings to ask readers to consider a series of questions that can best be explored, understood, and engaged through attentiveness to these entanglements. “What is lost,” van Dooren asks, “when a species, an evolutionary lineage, a way of life, passes from the world?” How does this loss mean, and what does it mean, within the particular multispecies community formed and shaped by that way of life? And how might storytelling, conceived as an act of witnessing, help draw us into new relationships and accountabilities within our multispecies communities? Flight Ways is deeply concerned with the ethical questions that emerge – and that must be sustained – in the course of thinking through these crucial questions, and it is committed to moving us away from a position of human exceptionalism as we work with and inside of that ethical troubling. Deeply interdisciplinary, van Dooren's book brings together approaches in animal studies and the environmental humanities, but it speaks to and from many more fields.
