Coinciding with her new book, Kerstin Thompson Architects: Encompassing People & Place, published by RMIT in conjunction with Thames & Hudson, this interview traces some of the landmark projects in KTA’s practice since the early 1990s. Thompson, who graduated from RMIT, regularly receives awards for everything, from her understated homes to even simple amenities, such as a toilet block adjacent to a freeway. Often driven by this history of a building, there’s a strong thread of ideas running through every project.

For MPavilion 2018's opening week, we were privileged to hear from two architects who have forged ahead in a traditionally male-dominated space. Carme Pinós and Kerstin Thompson were invited to have an informal discussion as part of Parlour's 'In Conversation' series. The chat was billed as an informal chat between two practitioners... only with an audience in attendance. The two architects charted public space, ideas of neighbourly intimacy, and Kerstin's penchant for seeing life happen behind lit windows at night. Good design is essential for creating sustainable, inclusive, healthy and beautiful places, but can we actually measure ‘good design’? And if so, how should this influence how we design places? The Office of the Victorian Government Architect brings us a fast-paced MTalks panel discussion exploring the tangible and intangible benefits of good design for health, education, public spaces, transport and neighbourhoods. For each of these themes, a design champion in government-led projects and a design expert from the Office of the Victorian Government Architect’s Victorian Design Review Panel will respond to these burning questions. Jill Garner, Victorian Government Architect, and Andrew Mackenzie, from City Lab, will lead the conversation, and curtail any runaways or over-timers, while the following luminaries of the built-form sphere will present their cases. Geeignete Kindermode und bedürfnisgerechte Alltagstextilien sind schwer zu bekommen und bringen die gelernte Schneiderin auf die Idee, ihre eigene Reha-Mode zu entwickeln, die besondere Menschen in ihren individuellen Bedürfnissen unterstützen sollen. Individualität mit praktischem Nutzen im Alltag Im Podcast erzählt Kerstin Thompson von den Besonderheiten, die mit der Geburt ihres Sohnes erforderlich wurden. Im Alltag merkte sie schnell, wo die Defizite klassischer Kindermode liegen, wenn das Kind beispielsweise von Inkontinenz oder motorischen Einschränkungen betroffen ist. Das Gespräch mit anderen Eltern zeigte die Schwachstellen in all ihrer Vielfalt. Als gelernte Näherin konnte sie für Ihr Kind Verbesserungen in der Alltagskleidung sowie in diversen Textilprodukten wie dem Schlafsack einbinden und selbst modische Vorlieben berücksichtigen. Schnell erfragten auch Freunde und Bekannte ihre Hilfestellung. Heute hat sich die energiegeladene Schneiderin auf stylische Reha-Mode spezialisiert, die den praktischen Nutzen mit moderner Optik kombinieren. Jedes Produkt wird bei ihr individuell gefertigt, um den Anforderungen des Nutzers beispielsweise mit Nässesperren oder geeigneten Schließmechanismen entgegen zu kommen. So erklärt sie im Podcast, wie sie die Herangehensweise an jedes einzelne Produkt für sich entwickelt hat und welche Aspekte sie im persönlichen Kontakt via Telefon oder Email mit ihren Kunden klärt: "Es ist für mich wichtig zu wissen, ob Inkontinenz oder ein Stützkorsett da ist. Ob Orthesen da sind und welche Art von Orthesen. Doch dann ist für mich auch wichtig zu wissen, wie weit ist die Person auch motorisch? Kann er sich allein einen Reißverschluss oder einen Knopf zu machen?" Im Gespräch mit Jörg Dommershausen von Reha-Management Oldenburg erläutert Kerstin Thompson daher nicht nur die Entstehung ihrer Firma, sondern auch die Funktionalität der farbenfrohen Kleidung für behinderte Menschen über die praktische Nutzung hinaus. So erwähnt sie neben der bestmöglichen Gewinnung und dem Erhalt der Selbständigkeit durch Barrierefreiheit. Listen to Parlour's convivial afternoon of conversation and connection over a glass of wine. Casual and welcoming, their spring salon was the first of Parlour’s seasonal salons—supported by Parlour partner AWS—that gave an opportunity for the women of Melbourne architecture to meet, form new networks and relationships. Emerging or established, all are always encouraged to join in at MPavilion. This salon began with a short public conversation between two women of different backgrounds and shared experiences, Kerstin Thompson of KTA and Clare Cousins of Clare Cousins Architects who ‘set the scene’ before the conversation opened up.

Kerstin Thompson is Principal of Kerstin Thompson Architects, Professor of Design in Architecture at Victoria University Wellington and Adjunct Professor of Architecture at RMIT & Monash Universities. Located in Melbourne, Australia, KTA was started in 1994 and has established itself as a significant and innovative reference point in Australian architecture and urban design. Kerstin is a writer and lecturer with close links with schools of architecture and professional institutes in Australia and overseas. She plays an active role not only within the profession, but also in promoting quality design in the wider community through her role as Panel member on the Office of the Victorian Government Architect’s Design Review Panel. She was Creative Director for the 2005 RAIA National Conference and the 2008 Venice Biennale and a member of the Federal Government’s BEIIC. Kerstin has also been an elected National Councillor for the AIA and was elevated to Fellow by the Institute in 2013. The practice focus is on architecture as a civic endeavour with an emphasis on the users’ experience and enjoyment of place.
