Best CDMX Neighborhoods Compared Choosing where to live in Mexico City is not as simple as picking the neighborhood with the best restaurants or the most attractive photos online. Most guides give you the same three answers: Roma. Condesa. Polanco. Those neighborhoods are popular for good reasons, but Mexico City is much more complicated than that. The right neighborhood depends on what you actually care about. Are you looking for nightlife? Do you want a large expat community? Would you rather live somewhere quiet and residential? Is public transportation important? Are you worried about earthquake risk? Are you buying real estate and hoping for appreciation? Are you planning to use the property part-time and rent it on Airbnb? Or do you simply want somewhere comfortable to live without paying a premium for the most famous address? Mexico City offers very different answers depending on your priorities. Start With Your Priorities Before comparing individual neighborhoods, it helps to identify what matters most to you. Trying to optimize for everything at once usually leads nowhere. A neighborhood with excellent nightlife may be noisy. A neighborhood with excellent earthquake characteristics may be farther from the social center of the city. A neighborhood with strong investment potential may feel less polished today. A highly popular expat neighborhood may also have higher prices and more competition for housing. Here are some useful starting points. If You Want a Large Expat Community Look first at: Colonia Juárez Condesa Roma Norte These neighborhoods have some of the most visible concentrations of foreign residents in central Mexico City. The trade-off is that these areas are also among the neighborhoods most affected by rent increases, Airbnb saturation, and local concerns about gentrification. If You Want Nightlife and Restaurants Consider: Juárez / Zona Rosa Roma Norte Condesa Juárez offers the strongest traditional nightlife environment. Transportation: Do Not Just Look at the Metro Map One of the easiest mistakes to make when choosing a Mexico City neighborhood is looking at a transit map and assuming a neighborhood is convenient because a metro line appears nearby. That is not always true. What matters is the actual walking distance from your building to the station you will use. A 15- or 20-minute walk can make the difference between using the metro every day and relying mostly on Uber or other transportation. Coyoacán Coyoacán is a good example. The neighborhood is famous and well connected to the broader city, but the historic center itself is not directly on a metro line. Stations such as Coyoacán, Viveros, and General Anaya are located around the edges of the area. Depending on where you live, the walk can be substantial. San Ángel San Ángel has a similar problem. [Video] Un incendio forestal sin precedentes devoró el 10% del bosque de Fontainebleau, el pulmón de biodiversidad ubicado a media hora de la capital francesa. Los ingenieros forestales llaman a buscar alternativas a los pinos, un tipo de árbol que puede arder más rápido durante las olas de calor, cada vez más frecuentes e intensas por el cambio climático. Con millones de visitantes al año, el bosque de Fontainebleau es el más concurrido de Francia. Para muchos parisinos, este pinar es un oasis verde donde muchos se reconectan con la naturaleza, hacen senderismo, bicicleta y escalada entre rocas y arenas finas. Pero este bosque mostró este año su vulnerabilidad. En julio, dos incendios arrasaron con 220 hectáreas de vegetación. Según los primeros elementos de las investigaciones, uno de los incendios habría sido causado de manera intencional por un joven bombero voluntario, mientras que el otro se habría desatado por una imprudencia de dos obreros que usaron una amoladora para cortar una valla de seguridad en la carretera que atraviesa el bosque. El fuego devoró el 10% del bosque y obligará a repensar la presencia del pino, una especie que fue sembrada en el siglo XIX para convertir el suelo arenoso cubierto por brezo, en el bosque que conocemos actualmente. Sin embargo, la multiplicación de las sequías convierte el bosque en material particularmente inflamable: el pino es un árbol que se quema más fácilmente que otras especies y que hace el bosque más propenso a los incendios en contexto de cambio climático. 'Puesto avanzado del cambio climático' “Esta zona geológica es única. Pueden ver que está cubierta por arena. El suelo es arenoso, no retiene agua, entonces es el bosque de la región de París más expuesto a la sequía y a las olas de calor. Es un puesto avanzado del cambio climático", constató Novak durante una inspección de la zona tras el peor fuego que vivió Fontainebleau en medio siglo. Según las proyecciones más optimistas de los climatólogos, habrá cinco veces más días de calor extremo a finales del siglo en Francia, lo que aumentará la frecuencia de los incendios. Hoy vamos a hacer una excepción. Le vamos a pedir un esfuerzo titánico al Seat 131 Supermirafiori. Vamos a cruzar media España, bajando todo el sistema ibérico y Despeñaperros para abajo, para meternos casi 700 kilómetros entre pecho y espalda. Gonzalo ya me ha dicho que el coche huele a ferodo quemado, pero hemos llegado a la provincia de Granada, concretamente a la comarca del Valle de Lecrín. Nuestro destino oficial es el municipio de El Pinar, pero no os encariñéis con el nombre, porque El Pinar es un invento administrativo de 1976. Es el "Frankenstein" de ellos, formado por la fusión de Pinos del Valle y nuestro verdadero protagonista de hoy: la pedanía de Ízbor. El municipio en total tiene unos 870 habitantes, pero en Ízbor viven, según el último recuento y si no se ha ido nadie a por tabaco, unas 300 almas. Geográficamente, estamos en el Valle de Lecrín, que viene del árabe Iqlim al-Qassab, que significa "Valle de la Caña de Azúcar", aunque los románticos dicen que es el "Valle de la Alegría". Vamos, La Comarca de los Hobbits de ellos, pero con más cuestas y menos pelo en los pies. Pero hablemos de Ízbor. Porque, amigos, con ese nombre, Ízbor no parece un pueblo de Granada. Ízbor suena a fortaleza de la Tierra Media. Suena a Isengard, a Erebor, a Mordor con geranios. Tú escuchas "Ízbor" y esperas ver orcos saliendo del Ayuntamiento o a Saruman asomado al campanario. Su gentilicio es izboreño o izboreña, aunque yo propongo oficialmente "Uruk-hai". El pueblo está encaramado en una ladera que ríete tú de la escalada al Monte del Destino. Si no os habeis dado cuenta todo esto va a estar lleno de chistes de El Señor de los Anillos e Izbor. Las calles son tan estrechas y empinadas que aquí no sube el butano, aquí el butano se teletransporta. Es un entramado urbano de herencia claramente musulmana, porque recordemos que esto fue territorio Nazarí. De hecho, su nombre original era Hisn Isbur, que significa Castillo de la Torre, o literalmente Castillo de Ízbor, del que apenas quedan restos bajo las casas actuales, porque el pueblo se lo comió. Pero si hay una cosa que define a Ízbor son sus puentes. No tienen uno, ni dos... tienen una colección. Tienes el viaducto nuevo de la autovía (que es el futuro), el puente de hierro de los años 90, y el famoso Puente de Isabel II, una obra de ingeniería del siglo XIX que fue clave para bajar a la costa. Pero ojo, que debajo de este, casi escondido como si fuera la entrada secreta a Moria, está el verdadero Puente Viejo de Ízbor. Es un puente de piedra de un solo ojo, chiquitito, que data de finales del siglo XVI o principios del XVII. Aunque todo el mundo allí te dirá que es romano porque en este país cualquier piedra vieja es romana hasta que se demuestre lo contrario, la realidad es que servía para el paso de arrieros. Tú te pones en medio de ese puente, con el barranco debajo, y te faltan el bastón y la barba para gritar: "¡No puedes pasaaar!". Su patrimonio religioso lo encabeza la Iglesia Parroquial de San José. Nada de Purísimas (aunque en algún documento antiguo la llamaran Concepción), aquí manda San José. Es un templo construido a mediados del siglo XVI por dos currelas llamados Cristóbal y Álvaro de Miranda. Es humilde como ella sola. De hecho, hay un informe de 1621 que decía que la iglesia era tan pobre que no tenía ni Santísimo Sacramento ni pila bautismal. Vamos, que era una iglesia low cost. Tiene una armadura de madera de par y nudillo (lo que se llama estilo mudéjar, para que nos entendamos) y una torre donde está la entrada. Las fiestas patronales se celebran en pleno agosto, concretamente el primer fin de semana, en honor a San Cayetano. Ahí no hay orcos, pero hay verbena, procesión y la "noble tradición" de hacer concursos de postres y carreras de cintas. San José tiene su día el 19 de marzo, pero tenemos un dato dramático: en 2024 se planteó cancelar la procesión porque no había gente joven suficiente para cargar el santo. El drama de la España vaciada, o mejor dicho, la España sin costaleros. Como curiosidad final, a este municipio pertenece el pueblo fantasma de Tablate, que está al lado. Es la puerta de la Alpujarra, un sitio abandonado con su propia iglesia y su puente estratégico, ideal para rodar una de miedo o para que Iker Jiménez se pase una noche.

Cristina García's new novel, “Vanishing Maps,” is a sequel to her widely acclaimed debut, “Dreaming in Cuban,” published 30 years ago. The novels follow the del Pinos, a Cuban family disconnected by political allegiances, borders, and immigration. In “Vanishing Maps” the family has scattered beyond Cuba and New York to distant corners of Berlin, Los Angeles, and Moscow. The younger generations are far removed from Cuba, but the island remains a central force in their longings for home and family. García, who was recently a visiting professor at University of San Francisco and resident playwright at Central Works Theater in Berkeley, joins us to talk about how her characters forge bonds and confront borders –- both real and imagined.
