This week, we're discussing the Twilight Zone episode "King Nine Will Not Return." Captain James Embry is waking up into a nightmare--face down in the African sands, B-52 bomber crashed in front of him, and no sign of his crew. All that is left to do is try and figure out exactly what happened here. For Jame Embry, played by actor Bob Cummings, this is going to be a tale directly out of both the Twilight Zone and Sherlock Holmes. In our analysis, we'll talk about whether or not understanding deductive and inductive reasoning would have helped Captain Embry; we'll get a bit speculative about time and space; and I'll reveal my moment of awe, which has to do with how our brains tend to fill in the gaps of particularly traumatic events. So, grab your keys, and let's unlock this door to the fifth dimension. As always, spoiler alert. If you have note seen the episode, go check it out and then come back here for the analysis. We're walking through Rod Serling's class Twilight Zone series and asking difficult questions about life. So, if you love The Twilight Zone, science fiction, or even just philosophizing about life, consider joining us on this journey. There's always room for more. It just so happens that awe is exactly what we need in these difficult, divisive times. So, join me, Joe Meyer, and let's walk through the fifth dimension with Rod Serling. Along the way, we'll discuss big questions and relate them back to our Twilight Zone episodes.Opening and Ending theme: by Jacob Williams @jakeproduces on Fiverr#twilightzone #rodserling #scifi #zone #outerlimits #sciencefiction
It takes a gifted actor to be able to pull off a single-actor episode. When executed well - such as Agnes Moorehead's "The Invaders," the episode can become legendary. Since we've already covered that episode, this month we look at two other single-actor episodes. First up is Robert Cummings' season 2 premiere, "King Nine Will Not Return." Cummings portrays a US Air Force pilot who was unable to pilot what ended up being a fateful flight that took the lives of his entire crew. Next up we look at Mickey Rooney's season 5 episode, "The Last Night of a Jockey." Rooney plays Grady, a jockey who wishes he were big after being suspended for fixing races and doping. Each of these episodes was written for their respective leads by Rod Serling himself. While they haven't risen to the top of the Zone echelon like Moorehead's "Invaders," they both showcase top-level performances and offer up lessons on issues that are still very relevant today: mental health. Certainly the lessons Rod penned sixty years ago are ones we need to be reminded of and learn today.
