On deck: (6:33) It's time to witness and experience the Madness! The NCAA Tournament commences today. I'll have a complete breakdown and analysis of the top storylines (Does UNC have a run in them? Will all 1 seeds meet in the Final Four? Who'll get picked off first?) Among other intriguing topics, including my Final Four and National Champion predictions as we'll go in full sprint over the next three weeks to see who ends up in San Antonio April 5-7. (39:22) The NBA will take a backseat to college basketball over the weekend. It's been rather quiet in the Association. Do I discuss Paul George being shut down in Philly? I'll peep the standings and schedule to check the latest in the playoff seedings as we're three and a half week from the season concluding. (49:21) On the ice, things are looking like their basketball counterparts as there's nothing to uncover, despite the wild card races in both conferences starting to heat up. (57:11) Baseball season is underway, but we're still a week away from Opening Day throughout the sport. The Dodgers are 2-0 after two wins in Japan over the Cubs. Is this team going to be a juggernaut? Or sleepwalk until October? Plus, a surprise regarding where I'll have my forthcoming 2025 MLB Preview that you won't want to miss. (1:04:49) Wake me up when Aaron Rodgers either retires or signs on with a team. Besides that, I don't want anything to do with him. The Houston Texans re-sign a couple of their own defensive players. And I make a brief mention of Rory McIlroy winning the TPC in a playoff and what that means with The Masters three weeks away. How DARVO Silences Victims

Private Practice Skills

DARVO was coined by Dr. Jennifer Freyd in the 1990s and stands for “Deny, Attack, and Reverse Victim and Offender.” DARVO is a common defense strategy by perpetrators, narcissists, and offenders of both criminal and noncriminal harm when they wish to deflect accountability for their actions.Despite how common DARVO is both individually in relationships as well as on a larger scale (e.g., corporate and government level), it isn't talked about very often. DARVO is highly effective at silencing victims. But I'm hopeful that by sharing knowledge of how DARVO operates, we can empower ourselves and our society to combat it.In this episode, we discuss the dynamics of DARVO, as well as the ways it can suppress whistleblowers and negatively impact their wellbeing.I know it's a weighty topic for this episode, but it feels highly useful for all of us to have this knowledge handy, whether to advocate for ourselves or to better support our clients in identifying DARVO and successfully holding others accountable. You can find the shorter, less in-depth version of this episode here:https://youtu.be/zhAZfcin3YYNational Domestic Violence Hotline:https://www.thehotline.org/Crisis Text Line:https://www.crisistextline.org/"How to Handle the DARVO Method"https://sentientcounselling.co.uk/2023/03/21/how-to-handle-the-darvo-method/Thank you to Paubox for sponsoring this episode. From Chronic Pain to Passion

Play Episode Listen Later Feb 28, 2025 46:35

This episode is a little different from what I usually share. It touches on current events that may feel triggering, but at its heart, it's about something deeply universal: how to work through the shame that silences us and reclaim our voice when fear threatens to shut us down.In the aftermath of the events of October 7, 2023, I received an email from a non-Jewish former client. In this email, she claimed that, as an ethnic Jew, I had a moral obligation to publicly align with her political beliefs. The tone and content of her message felt like an attack on my personal identity and an attempt to weaponize my ethnicity as a test of my moral worth. And it shook me to my core.I felt instantly afraid, ashamed, and confused, and that swirl of emotions silenced me. I didn't tell anyone about the email—except for my husband—for months. I didn't even tell my life coach or best friend. I was so afraid that if this one person thought I wasn't a good person, maybe everyone thought the same. The email struck such a vulnerable place, dredging up layers of internalized anti-Semitism I didn't even know were lodged so deeply inside me. Looking back, I realize that because it touched on an unhealed wound carried through generations, through my grandparents' history of escaping the Holocaust, it triggered a core, primal fear: the fear of not being loved or accepted because of who I am.I want to share how I worked through this experience and used it as an invitation to heal this deep layer of fear and shame. And part of what helped me recognize what was happening was the timing: I received this email one week before stepping on stage to tell a different story that I had carried shame around for over 20 years, which you can hear in its entirety in episode 42 of this podcast. That story, about an experience with non-consensual touch in my teens, had silenced me for so long. The shame had stifled my creativity, my clarity, and my life energy. And as I prepared to share that story on stage, I realized how the email was triggering the same fear and the same impulse to silence myself again. But this time, I knew better, and I had tools. I wasn't going to let fear and shame bury me for another 20 years. Instead, I used my tools to turn this into an opportunity for inner healing and growth. And that's what I want to share with you today: how you can use the fear of rejection, judgment, or misunderstanding as a powerful invitation to heal yourself, build deeper self-trust, and free up the life energy you need to share your incredible gifts with the world. You can find me at:Instagram: @anna_holtzmanEmail: anna@annaholtzman.comWebsite: www.annaholtzman.com

Brian Harnetty's recent record, Words and Silences, takes voice recordings made by the famed American Trappist monk Thomas Merton and sets them within Harnetty's musical compositions. The meditative and revealing result has been lauded by critics in The Wire, MOJO, and Aquarium Drunkard.  In this episode, we share a Phantom Power exclusive: a brand new narrative piece that Brian created about the making of his record. “Words and Silences: The Thomas Merton Hermitage Tapes” is much more than a behind-the-scenes look at Brian's process. Harnetty's audio diary is its own moving meditation on Merton, solitude, sound, media, and the self.  This is the second piece that Brian has shared with Phantom Power–you may remember his Forest Listening Rooms episode. Like that episode, this is something special. We highly recommend taking a walk in the woods or finding a quiet space to listen to this beautiful meditation. And after we listen, Mack talks to Brian about what we've heard.  (And, of course, we'll have a longer version of the interview and our What's Good segment for our Patrons.) Who was Thomas Merton? Thomas Merton was an author, mystic, poet, and comparative religion scholar who lived from 1915 to 1968. It's hard to imagine a spiritual superstar quite like Merton appearing in America today. His first book, 1948's “The Seven Storey Mountain,” became a best-seller and led to a flood of young men applying to join Catholic monasteries.  Merton had a major influence on spaces such as the progressive Catholic church Mack grew up going to. He was outward facing, committed to leftist causes, and fascinated by other religions, but at the same time, he retreated from his fame into his hermitage in KY. In The New Yorker, Alan Jacobs called him “perhaps the proper patron saint of our information-saturated age, of we who live and move and have our being in social media, and then, desperate for peace and rest, withdraw into privacy and silence, only to return.” Brian Harnetty Brian Harnetty is an interdisciplinary sound artist who uses listening to foster social change. He is known for his recording projects with archives, socially engaged sound works, sound and video installations, live performances, and writings. His interdisciplinary approach has been compared to “working like a novelist…breathing new life into old chunks of sound by radically recontextualizing them” (Clive Bell, The Wire). Brian is currently a Faculty Fellow at Ohio State University's Global Arts and Humanities Discovery Theme (2022-23), Harnetty is a two-time recipient of the MAP Fund Grant (2021, 2020), and received the A Blade of Grass Fellowship for Socially Engaged Art in Contemplative Practices (2018) and the Creative Capital Performing Arts Award (2016). When a city government uses the courts to silence a newspaper, it's not just an attack on one publication—it's an attack on press freedom itself. That's exactly what happened in Clarksdale, Mississippi, where a judge ordered the Clarksdale Press Register to remove an editorial questioning the transparency of a proposed tax initiative. The ruling, widely condemned as an egregious violation of the First Amendment, has ignited national concern among journalists and legal experts. In a recent episode of Palestine Declassified, hosts Chris Williamson and David Miller were joined by The Grayzone editor Max Blumenthal to dissect the controversial role of the Center for Countering Digital Hate (CCDH). The discussion centered on the CCDH's efforts to suppress pro-Palestinian voices on social media, particularly under the leadership of Elon Musk. The episode shed light on the organization's ties to Zionist interests and its broader agenda to silence dissent against Israeli policies. The first segment featured Latifa Abouchakra, who detailed The Grayzone's investigative work exposing the CCDH as a dishonest entity masquerading as a watchdog. The report revealed how the CCDH, despite its claims of combating hate speech, systematically targets and erases content supportive of Palestinian rights, effectively aligning itself with the Zionist regime's propaganda efforts. The second segment delved into the CCDH's extensive network of connections, including its links to the British Labour Party, the Community Security Trust, the Pears Foundation, and the Anti-Defamation League (ADL) in the United States. These ties underscore the organization's role as a tool for advancing pro-Israel narratives while undermining legitimate criticism of Israeli actions. The episode highlighted how these relationships enable the CCDH to wield significant influence over digital platforms, shaping public discourse in favor of Zionist interests.Overall, the program provides a critical examination of the CCDH's activities, exposing its role in the broader campaign to delegitimize and suppress pro-Palestinian advocacy. By connecting the dots between the CCDH and its institutional backers, Palestine Declassified offered a compelling case for how digital censorship is weaponized to serve political agendas, particularly those aligned with the Zionist movement. This episode is a must-watch for anyone concerned about free speech and the ongoing struggle for Palestinian rights.Read The Grayzone's reporting on leaked emails from the CCHD

TVC 672.3: Part 2 of a conversation that began just before the holidays with Steve Randisi, author of Penny Singleton: A Biography, a comprehensive look at the life and career of the actress who not only achieved worldwide fame in the 1930s and '40s as the star of the Blondie movie series from Columbia Pictures (and, later, to TV audiences as the voice of Jane Jetson on the original Jetsons TV series and, later, the Jetsons movie), but who made history in 1958 when she became the first female president of an AFL-CIO union, the American Guild of Variety Artists. Topics this segment include how Singleton was nearly fired from the first Blondie picture because of an incident over a cigarette; the values she formed while growing up in South Philadelphia; and how her longtime connection with Rod Serling resulted in her appearance opposite John McGiver in the Twilight Zone episode “Sounds and Silences.” Penny Singleton: A Biography is available from Bear Manor Media.
