Send us a textEver wondered how authoritarian groups like Scientology manage to exert such control over their members? Renowned author Jon Atack joins us for a riveting exploration of Scientology's psychological grip and the arduous journeys of those who break free. Jon's book, "Let's Sell These People a Piece of Blue Sky," serves as a pivotal resource for many former members seeking to heal, and in this episode, he recounts his meticulous writing process to ensure its accuracy and impact. From his own entry into Scientology in 1974 to his departure through the independent movement, Jon reveals the manipulative tactics of guilt, fear, and thought-terminating clichés crafted by L. Ron Hubbard to enforce compliance. But it doesn't stop there. Listen as Jon shares personal anecdotes that peel back the layers of Scientology's inner workings. Ever hear of the Operating Thetan Committee, UK? Jon's unexpected stint as chairman offers a unique lens into the organization's structure and the fervor of its followers. We touch upon the creation of the Reconnection newsletter, a beacon for disaffected members, and the contentious history of Scientology, which includes internal conflicts and the reworking of Hubbard's controversial texts. Through Jon's extensive research and collaborations with other experts, we piece together a complex and often contradictory narrative of Scientology's past. And what's a discussion about Scientology without addressing its darker aspects? We cover the harrowing case of Lisa McPherson, the deceptive strategies used by the organization, and the legal battles faced by publishers. Intriguingly, we also examine the influences on L. Ron Hubbard, including his curious mix of admiration and condemnation for Freud. This episode provides invaluable insights into how to encourage critical thinking among Scientologists, fostering open dialogue without coercion. Tune in for a comprehensive look at how former members navigate the challenging path to recovery and the importance of maintaining free and open communication.Support the showBFG Store - http://blownforgood-shop.fourthwall.com/Blown For Good on Audible - https://www.amazon.com/Blown-for-Good-Marc-Headley-audiobook/dp/B07GC6ZKGQ/ref=tmm_aud_swatch_0?_encoding=UTF8&qid=&sr=Blown For Good Website: http://blownforgood.com/PODCAST INFO:Podcast website: https://www.buzzsprout.com/2131160/shareApple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/blown-for-good-behind-the-iron-curtain-of-scientology/id1671284503 Spotify: ...

Peek behind the curtain of Scientology's top-tier with Claire and me as we unravel the enigma of Jenny Linson, a stalwart of the church's inner circle. Discover the trajectory of a woman who rose through the ranks to implement the edicts of the enigmatic David Miscavige. Our series begins with a foray into Linson's early days, her ascent to the Watchdog Committee, and an insider's perspective on the intense logistics behind the scenes of high-profile Scientology events. As the conversation steers into darker territory, we recount the climate of fear Linson navigated, charged with executing Miscavige's orders during some of the church's most controversial moments such as the Lisa McPherson case. Witness through our experiences the pressured atmosphere surrounding initiatives like the "Golden Age of Technology," and hear firsthand accounts of the violence and control that define life at the Gold Base for Sea Org members. In our final reflections, we tackle the volatility within Scientology's upper echelons, including the Linson family's brush with the Reed Slatkin Ponzi scheme and its ramifications. Could the key to unraveling one of the most baffling puzzles of the modern era lie hidden within the secluded compounds of the Church of Scientology? Join my husband, Marc, and me as we follow the breadcrumbs leading to Shelly Miscavige's disappearance – an enigma that has captivated and confounded the world since 2005. Explore with us the clandestine corners of the church's operations, from the alleged Twin Peaks holding site to the remote reaches of Petrolia, California, as we dissect the church's tactics of information control and person management. With the help of Google Earth, we scrutinize the geographic isolation that seems to be a strategic choice for Scientology's most secret bases, and we ponder the chilling implications of such an existence for someone like Shelly Miscavige. This episode pulls back the curtain on Scientology's carefully constructed facade, revealing a pattern of obfuscation apparent in high-profile cases like that of Danny Masterson and Lisa McPherson. Our conversation takes an unexpected turn when our own son's voter registration throws a spotlight on the opaque inner workings of the institution. We connect dots that might otherwise go unnoticed, from enigmatic symbols visible only from the sky to the controversial decision to build near fault lines. This is not just an investigation into the whereabouts of a missing person; it's an eye-opening journey into the heart of an organization that goes to great lengths to protect its secrets and its members – willingly or not.Support the showBFG Store - http://blownforgood-shop.fourthwall.com/Blown For Good on Audible - https://www.amazon.com/Blown-for-Good-Marc-Headley-audiobook/dp/B07GC6ZKGQ/ref=tmm_aud_swatch_0?_encoding=UTF8&qid=&sr=Blown For Good Website: http://blownforgood.com/PODCAST INFO:Podcast website: https://www.buzzsprout.com/2131160/shareApple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/blown-for-good-behind-the-iron-curtain-of-scientology/id1671284503 Spotify: ...

Could you imagine the uncertainty of not knowing where your family member is for over a decade? That's the painful reality for our guest Sterling Tompkins, who joins us in this stirring episode to discuss the puzzling case of Shelly Miscavige, the wife of the Scientology leader, David Miscavige. Shelly, once an ever-present figure, has been conspicuously absent from public view since 2005, stirring a whirlpool of questions and theories. Sterling, Shelly's brother-in-law and nephew, lends a unique perspective to our conversation as we traverse the complex family dynamics and the enigma encircling Shelly's absence. This isn't just a chat about a disappearance; it's a deep dive into the intricacies of our shared experiences within the Church of Scientology. We reminisce about our respective families, our upbringing within the institution, and the strains on our relationships triggered by David Miscavige's influence. We recall the memories of Shelley and David and how the aftermath of Lisa McPherson's wrongful death in 1995 marked a significant turn in their relationship. But our chat doesn't end there. We take a moment to reflect on the present and the future - how our past experiences have molded us, and the importance of recognizing those who've managed to do good despite the Church's practices. We open the floor to our audience, inviting you to engage with us in our ongoing conversation about our experiences and the different perspectives they bring. This video describes the core doctrine of Scientology which is IMPLANTS. OT 2 to OT 8 is excorcism which is ritual and procedures to get rid of the spirits attached to the body or the host spirit of a body. When a person goes criminal after achieving OT 7 and OT 8 they are labelled "by-passed case" which means they did not REALLY do the procedures and they are ordered to redo everything over again AT THEIR EXPENSE. Mike Rinder continues his account of his life in Scientology, focusing this week on the first years ashore in Florida, when Scientology began buying property in Clearwater, posing as the fictious “Southern Land Development Corporation”. In between some fascinating tangents and comparisons to Clearwater's more current experiences with Scientology, Mike and Jon discuss the organization's legal battles of that era, particularly with Clearwater mayor Gabe Cazares and other early critics. An astonishing series of revelations about Scientology's abuse of its members. Mike Rinder describes his arrival on Scientology's flagship the Apollo at the tender age of 18. Sent from Australia for management training, after handing over his passport, he found he'd been traded in a typical case of Scientology's human trafficking. Conditions for the "elite" Sea Org under Hubbard's direct control were deplorable. As Mike says, the former cattle hold which had become the men's dorm was like "the black hole of Calcutta" and the food was "garbage". Mike was tasked with "baby-watching" the first victim of the Introspection Rundown (on which Lisa McPherson later died), which Hubbard claimed would cure insanity. Mike was also the only Scientologist left on the island of Madeira after the notorious "rock festival", where locals hurled bricks and cobblestones at the Apollo, and was lucky to escape with his life. links: ex-Scientology kids: http://exscientologykids.com the Aftermath Foundation: http://theaftermathfoundation.org

This week: two disturbing stories regarding Scientology. One involves the tragic death of Lisa McPherson. As always...thanks for listening!
In 2007 I knew Scientology was some kind of new age religion. I figured it was harmless, who cares if they want to believe in some crazy Sci Fi stuff? Then I saw the BBC Panorama film Scientology and Me with John Sweeney and boy was I wrong! This documentary, Lisa Mcpherson, Going Clear and Leah Remini all led to me doing this very podcast. For me and many others speaking against the methods, pain and the destruction of Scientology...it starts with John Sweeney. Also, Clearwater does right by it's residents and my odd visit to the Orlando Scientology Org. Did John know just how aggressive Tommy Davis would be? Was Scientology cause for more PTSD than being behind enemy lines under cover? Will I remember "Tommy Davidson" is that comedian from In Living Color and start using the proper name for Tommy Davis? I have always had a morbid fascination with cults. Perhaps because I was born on the day of the Jonestown Massacre. So when I first heard about Scientology I read everything about it and was shocked at the nefarious activities they get away with. I was as giddy as a schoolgirl when "Wise Beard Man" himself, Mark Bunker, of XENUTV.com, agreed to be a guest. He's one of the main forces trying to take the corruption out of Scientology. Comedian Jake Weisman, whose fascination with the group is even greater than mine, lends us his thoughts and outrage on the matter. Jake also reveals he may be harboring anti-Scientologist cats. We get into it all, including the life of L. Ron Hubbard and his rise after writing Dianetics. You'll get a lesson on what Scientology is and learn about the tragedy of Lisa McPherson. We also discuss the mad genius behind the tactics Scientologists use to get into people's heads. You may wonder, "What's geeky about Scientology?" It's full of sci-fi and bad tech so what's not geeky about it! There's so much information it had to be split into two parts. Are we worried that the Scientologists will come get us? YES!
