Today on Truth in Politics and Culture, Kamala Harris and President Trump appear on Fox News with very different results. In a combative interview with Brett Baer, Harris deflects tough questions, refusing to answer and pivoting to Trump. The FBI engages in a stealth revision of its 2022 statistics on violent crime, and the Biden Administration appears to pressure Israel about Iran to influence the race for the White House.
Trump was supposed to have a town hall last night and take questions from the audience. Instead, he stood on stage and swayed to music for 40 minutes. Democrats need to listen to working class voters. And too many people still don't know who Kamala Harris is. All that and more, here. Have a listen. Hosted on Acast. The costume designer Jenny Beavan has won three Academy Awards for three very different films: the elegant Merchant Ivory drama Room with a View; the post-apocalyptic Mad Max: Fury Road; and most recently the Disney film Cruella, for which she created a huge, vibrant parade of 1970s-inspired fashion. She's received a further nine Oscar nominations across her 40 year career. She found just the right top hat for Colin Firth in the King's Speech and ditched the deerstalker in favour of a bowler for Robert Downey Jr in Sherlock Holmes. And despite claiming she has “never been interested in fashion”, she re-created striking Dior outfits for Mrs Harris Goes to Paris. Jenny's music choices include Handel, Mendelssohn, Sondheim and - with a nod to the film the King's Speech - Beethoven. Presenter Michael Berkeley Producer Clare Walker

The VP stepped away from the teleprompter last night and the result was…word salad. She and President Biden —quite obviously impaired— greeted returning hostages at Andrews Air Force Base and none of it was reassuring. Hugh discusses that with Ben Domenech and Sarah Bedford and also provides an intro to “Duane's World”: The new podcast from Hugh's senior producer of 25 years Duane Patterson. For the first time in 40 years, a Californian is set to become a major party's presidential nominee. Meanwhile, governor Gavin Newsom issues an order to remove homeless encampments from city streets and continues to push back against critics of California's $20 minimum wage for fast-food workers who claim that the new standard is a job-killer. Hoover senior fellow Lee Ohanian and distinguished policy fellow Bill Whalen, both contributors to Hoover's California on Your Mind web channel, discuss the Golden State including why vice president Kamala Harris' ascent to the top of the Democratic presidential ticket upsets the political order in her home state (would Newsom accept a cabinet post should she win?), plus upcoming milestones for two US presidents with California ties – the 50th anniversary of Richard Nixon's White House resignation and Herbert Hoover's 150th birthday.

Over the years Melanie and I have had a lot of conversations about college football, but I don't think she has ever been as fired up about her Aggies as she is this week. That is to say: our friend is a smidge angry. We process some of that anger before we move into Side Eyes and I See Yous, and then we do a little catch-up on the non-football things that have happened this past week. You may pick up on the fact that non-football life has been a much more consistent source of joy. We also do a quick summary of what we've been reading / watching / listening to, we marvel at so many things related to Taylor Swift, and it's Melanie's turn for Five Favorites.
