Rob Edwards is a thirty-year veteran of movies and television who wrote and produced shows including The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, Full House, and In Living Color before writing two classic animated films for Walt Disney Feature Animation: the Academy Awards and Golden Globe nominated The Princess and The Frog, and the Academy Awards nominated Treasure Planet. His new project is the graphic novel Defiant: The Story of Robert Smalls. Rob Edwards reflects on being creative for a living, the difference between tourists and pretenders and being a real professional, and how he feels obligated to both teach and entertain in his work. He also shares what it was like working on such iconic TV shows as Roc and The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air and managing the pressure and responsibility of being one of the few Black creative workers with his range and depth of experience in Hollywood. Rob Edwards also does some sharing about his approach to writing the new Marvel film Captain America: Brave New World and how Anthony Mackie's character “Sam Wilson” (who is now the new “Captain America”) reflects the much deeper history of the long Black Freedom Struggle and the pressure to always succeed in the face of the (near) impossible. On this special Memorial Day episode of the podcast, Chauncey DeVega continues with his annual tradition of reading an account of the first such remembrance day that took place at the end of the Civil War when now free Black Americans buried Union Army war dead in Charleston, South Carolina and honored their sacrifice and victory over the Confederacy with a huge parade. Chauncey also reads an account written by a member of the United States Colored Troops about his experience(s) in the Civil War and doing battle against the forces of the Confederacy who were determined to keep Black people in bondage. And Chauncey DeVega goes on a journey around his neighborhood and has a surreal series of experiences where he was lucky to not be shot by street pirates, learned from a wise honored elder on the bus, and then encountered a young man who claimed to be a time traveler. Between gigs Charles has been employed by the State of Philadelphia for over fifteen (15) years. He enjoys traveling the world making people laugh. Charles Walden was raised in the rough and tough inner city of Philadelphia and had to struggle and survive like any other kid in the inner city. He got No breaks just because he had Cerebral Palsy. He was not babied at all by family, friends, or the community. He had to put his pants on one leg at a time like every other boy or man. He had to overcome many obstacles. There was a lot of mental and physical pain he endured from living and growing up in the inner city of Philadelphia. The death of his mother crushed him, but he kept going. She was his rock. Many years have passed since her death and the pain never goes away but he keeps going. Charles' greatest pleasure is when he's on stage performing as he gives his audiences the most inspirational laughing good time they've had in a long while. Charles is a requested favorite to perform at colleges, universities, comedy clubs, churches and military bases across the Country. David Peisner is a freelance journalist and ghostwriter/collaborator based in Atlanta. His work has appeared in the New York Times, Rolling Stone, New York, Esquire, Playboy, and other publications. His first book collaboration—with “Steve-O,” the legendary co-star of the legendarily out there MTV reality series “Jackass”—grew out of a magazine assignment, taking Peisner on a sidelong career turn he hadn't anticipated. “If you are only going to buy one book this year about an alcoholic, self-abusive, vegan, pyromaniac ex-circus clown with a talent for vomiting on command and stapling his scrotum to his leg, make sure this is the one,” he wrote upon the book's publication. That book, Professional Idiot, became a New York Times best-seller, and led to a follow-up title, A Hard Kick in the Nuts, and a string of ghostwriting projects that helped to supplement Peisner's income as a freelance newspaper and magazine writer. Curiously, those two Steve-O books made headlines in December 2024, when they surfaced on the Goodreads account of suspected “CEO Killer” Luigi Mangione, charged with the murder of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson—a connection that put Peisner's work in an unexpected sliver of spotlight. It also brought his collaborative work to the attention of the similarly-named host of this here podcast, resulting in this conversation. Join us for a reflection on what it takes to build a career as a freelance journalist, and how to walk the fine line between writing about a celebrity subject and writing for a celebrity subject. Marlon Wayans says he's excited for ‘Scary Movie 6,' which the Wayans brothers are currently writing for a slated release in the summer of 2026. However, he denies rumors of a ‘White Chicks 2' movie, saying comments related to the film were taken out of context. Wayans also talks about the creative power of the Wayans family and how projects such as ‘In Living Color' and ‘Scary Movie' weren't the same after they left.
We saw a ton of recognizable, and established, actors stop by Boy Meets World as a guest star through the first 5 seasons of the show - but it’s possible none were as interesting, and inspiring, as this week’s guest. In addition to playing “Jump Master” in the newly G.O.A.T.’d Season 5 episode, “Raging Cory,” this familiar face has worked with Spike Lee, Bong Joon Ho, Wes Anderson and the Coen Bros., where he stole one of the most intensely dramatic (and funny?) scenes in film history. Oh, and did we mention he was a cast member on In Living Color? He’s legendary, internally evolved and a pioneer when it comes to racial equality and standing up for what you believe in. Even when it’s hard to do. This week on Pod Meets World - it’s Stephen Park!See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

We couldn't let the big SNL50 weekend pass without revisiting our debate pitting Saturday Night Live against In Living Color. So without further ado ... which sketch comedy show is better: Saturday Night Live or In Living Color? Writer and performer Carma Anderson says it’s SNL while storyteller and director Jameer Pond votes for In Living Color. Carma says SNL’s longevity is proof of its superiority and argues that it’s produced more stars and has showcased a diverse array of cast members over its 50-year run. Jameer says In Living Color had better quality, brought Black culture into the mainstream, and created cultural icons. After a heated debate, it’s up to Ronald Young Jr. to cast the deciding vote to determine this week’s winner. Follow Carma @goodcarmawon on Instagram and Jameer @jameerpond on Twitter and Instagram. It's the 50th anniversary of Saturday Night Live, which means it's been approximately 50 years since any of us watched it. Still, we'll always cherish the memories. We'll also cherish the memories of SCTV, In Living Color, and other things that aren't SNL but also basically are. But you know what Tim likes the most? Kids getting proper upbringings. We see careers in the acting world come and go at a rapid pace. If you ask any random person to name their favorite 10 actor or actresses, they will most likely struggle to even name 10 at all. But the subject of today's show will most likely make the top ten list for a lot of people and has made his name one to remember. Jim Carrey blasted on to the scene when he joined the cast for In Living Color and it blossomed into a movie career that has spanned decades and made him a ton of money. If you go through his list of hits, you may not be human if you don't love at least 2 or 3 of them. But what was like as a kid for Jim, growing up in Canada? How did he get his start in comedy? And can he answer the question we all asked, “will you face really get stuck like that?” We'll dive into all this and more in the Jim Carrey episode of AHC Podcast. It is Wednesday on The Rickey Smiley Morning Show Podcast. In this episode, the RSMS crew discusses a variety of topics. Beyoncé has been named the Pop Artist of the 21st century. While an artist like Taylor Swift may have better numbers than Beyoncé, it is Beyoncé's twenty-five years of cultural relevance that makes her the top artist of the century. Jennifer Lopez has credited Jamie Foxx for helping her early in her career. When J. Lo first started out, she was a Fly Girl on the show In Living Color, and said she would not have been able to stay on the show if it weren't for Foxx's encouragement. Also, Christian Combs, son of Sean Diddy Combs, has officially been served with a lawsuit for sexual assault. A woman by the name of Grace said that Combs sexually assaulted her during a yacht party where she was working during the party in Miami. This was one of my favorite conversations over the last year or so. Figured it'd be nice to share it again... We are joined in this episode by Writer, Producer, Actor and Mentor, LARRY WILMORE! We discussed what drew Larry to comedy, writing, acting and producing; and, yes, we did talk about the WGA strike; why, as a kid, he was compelled by the work of such greats as Houdini, Buster Keaton, the Marx Brothers and Flip Wilson; rebounding from professional setbacks and keeping a healthy mindset; his thoughts on the "TP&R question" - how to be better at talking about politics and religion across our differences; and we got pretty deep with the concept of consciousness, meaning and why humans have a desire to have a life of meaning. Emmy Award winner Larry Wilmore is a prolific producer, actor, comedian, and writer. He is also the host of the excellent podcast Larry Wilmore: Black on the Air. Larry is perhaps best known for his role as host of Comedy Central's The Nightly Show with Larry Wilmore and as the “Senior Black Correspondent” on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart. Off-screen, Larry serves as co-creator and consulting producer on HBO's Insecure, and helped to launch ABC's black-ish as an executive producer and is a co-creator of the spin-off Grownish. Previously, he has written for In Living Color, The PJ's (which he co-created), The Office (on which he also appeared), and The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. He also served as creator, writer, and executive producer of The Bernie Mac Show, which earned him his Emmy for “Outstanding Writing for a Comedy Series” and a 2001 Peabody Award. If you don't get excited to see David Alan Grier, then something is seriously wrong. Like, please, go figure that out… we'll wait. David's got 40 years of experience on the stage and screen - the craftsman of both comedy and drama with the awards to prove it. He didn't start out as a Tony-winning actor, though… David tells Dan about how his upbringing shaped his lifelong curiosity, from getting his start in comedy as a class clown, to his father's history as a Black activist and David's own attempt to join the Black Panther Party. David reflects on the incredible legacy and enduring magic behind “In Living Color”, his approach to the art of balancing comedy and drama today – and how both, coupled with kindness, can help us get through dark times. David stars in the new NBC hit comedy, “St. Denis Medical”, streaming now on Peacock. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

Nicole Salaver is the kind of person I wish I had met long before that happened. In this episode, meet Nicole. She's the program manager at Balay Kreative these days. But her San Francisco roots go way, way back. Her maternal grandfather came to the US in the 1920s. He was one of the first Filipinos to own a restaurant and pool hall in Manilatown (please see our episode on Manilatown Heritage Foundation). He was a manong who lived at the International Hotel. Stories that Nicole's mom has told her were that he was more or less a mobster, paying off cops to keep his place safe. Nicole's maternal grandmother came to the states in the Fifties with her first husband. But he was an abusive alcoholic, and so her grandmother divorced him. She turned to the government for help for her and her four kids. They sent the single mother and her family to live at what turned out to be a brothel. But she wasn't aware of that at the time. The two met at the I-Hotel, where Nicole's grandmother helped the manongs with anything involving English—paperwork for green cards, lawyers, visas, etc. It was just a side hustle to her job at the US Postal Service. She knew all the manongs, but fell in love with Nicole's grandfather. They married and had three kids, including Nicole's mom. Her mom was born in the Sixities and grew up in the Seventies in San Francisco. Her dad's parents arrived in the US in the Fifties, after World War II. Her paternal grandfather was a merchant marine who cooked on a Navy ship. He met Nicole's grandmother on one of his voyages back to the Philippines and brought her back to the US. They had two boys—Nicole's dad and her uncle. Nicole says that her dad grew up a hippie in Sixties San Francisco, and retained that sensibility throughout his life. He worked for SF Recreation and Parks, smoked weed, and made art. He met Nicole's mother at a collage party while playing guitar in his brother's band. More on Patrick Salaver, Nicole's uncle, later. Nicole, an only child, was born at St. Luke's hospital in 1980. Her mom and dad lived in the Excelsior, where Nicole grew up. She went to Guadalupe Elementary. Her parents were agnostic, but her Catholic grandmother enrolled her in a Catholic school without telling them. Nicole's mom pulled her out on Day 1 and got her into public schools. She was supposed to go to Balboa High School, but it was the Nineties and that school was going through a rough time (see our episode with Rudy Corpuz from United Playas for more on that story). And so the family moved down to South San Francisco. From here, we sidebar to talk about The City of Nicole's youth, in the late-Eighties and early Nineties. She laments the massive loss of art and community that tech money wiped out. And she reminisces about taking Muni all over town. They went to film festivals, galleries, museums, restaurants. In her high school years, Nicole and her friends came to the Haight a lot. She'd also attend as many Filipino events as she could—Pistahan, Barrio Fiesta, and more. Her mom was a dancer and her dad a musician. They pushed her to do one of those two things or visual art. Of them, she gravitated toward art, but as she got to her teen years, she decided that acting and writing were more her jam. That all started when her uncle, Patrick Salaver, gave her a video camera when Nicole was 12. Nicole was and is a fan of "Weird" Al Yankovic. She says she digs quirky humor. She watched lots of SNL, In Living Color, Golden Girls. Using the camera her uncle gave her, she and her cousin created soap operas, commercials, talk shows, SNL-type sketches, and more. But despite loving creating that stuff, she saw that her parents' art was just a hobby. It didn't seem possible that it could be a career. It wasn't until her dad passed away suddenly that Nicole decided to pursue her art. She shares that story with us. She'd been performing a one-woman show about her grandmother, who had Alzheimer's, at Bindlestiff. She was taking classes from W. Kamau Bell and doing stand-up comedy, opening for big names like Jo Koy, Ali Wong, and Hassan Minaj. Then she got a call: "Your dad is in the ER. You should go." During a botched tracheotomy, his heart stopped. By the time doctors got his heart beating again, he was brain dead. Prior to that, not knowing that it would be the last time she saw her dad, she recorded him. He told her that she should move to New York, follow her dreams, and never work for "the man." One of the last things Nicole's dad said to her was, "If you stop doing art, you will die." Three months after her dad's funeral, Nicole quit her job and moved to NYC. Check back next for Part 2 with Nicole Salaver. Photography by Mason J. We recorded this episode at Balay Kreative in October 2024.
