What a pleasure it was to have and listen to this week’s conversation again. My guest Lizzy Russinko is a dear soul, a wildly talented artist, a loving and conscious mama of two, and a wise woman whose friendship I cherish in my heart. If you’ve been listening to the podcast in the past few months you’ll have heard me reference this conversation over and over – so I’m doubly thrilled to share it! Lizzy and I talk about the importance of community, especially when you’re in the thick of the newborn phase. I love her idea of treating everyone she meets as if they’re new… so she never feels isolated because she’s always welcoming everyone else, including in places she’s never been. It’s such an effective way of including yourself and others. I can’t wait to use it! What most impacted me, though, was when Lizzy illuminated a simple but often-forgotten fact: any time we meet someone, we are only seeing and getting to know them as they are in THAT moment. We have no idea who or how they’ve been in the past, nor how or whom they’ll be in the future. If we approach each other (and ourselves) with curiosity, compassion and forgiveness our relationships will deepen and improve. Who were you before? Who are you becoming? How can you forgive yourself for what you may or may not have done to take loving care of yourself at different seasons in your life? There’s so much juice in this conversation that I just want you to get it into your ears NOW. In fact, this episode deserves to be listened to more than once so you can capture all the goodness within. If you’d like to check out Lizzy’s art or access the other resources we mentioned during our convo, click here. If you’d like to join the conversation we’re having over in the MamaFuel Virtual Village (our free FB community), click here and join us. I’d love to meet you there! ALSO: if you haven’t done it yet, I’d be mega grateful if you’d leave a review and rating over on Apple Podcasts. It makes the world of difference to know you’re listening, that you’re enjoying what I’m sharing here and that it’s helpful to you. Also, the more ratings the podcast gets, the more widely the funky little algorithm will share it with other mamas. And that would be great. Have a gorgeous week!
Lizzy's mission includes beautifully hand lettering words of power and encouragement, and helping women see themselves as always in a process of becoming... She creates retreats that bring your soul comfort, help you find your true self and allows you to continue living your best life. I loved chatting with her, and I know you'll love listening. More about Lizzy: Lizzy Russinko is a wildly passionate, misfit-loving, mama & artist - and an inimitable hugger. After 12 years in higher education, she left her career to parent her newborn daughter full-time, with dreams of emerging as a multi-passionate entrepreneur. Over the last 7 years she has found ways to put all of her amazing higher ed skills to use, as a mama (of course!) and a business owner. This (Un)Scripted Life is her hand lettering studio and retreat series with a focus on sharing Lizzy’s own personal philosophy of flipping the finger to the rules and stomping out your own beautiful path. Retreat Roadmap is an extension of that work, a consulting business that allows her to help other heartcentered, socially-conscious entrepreneurs plan soulful, purpose-driven retreats & gatherings. Everything Lizzy does goes back to human connection (both to ourselves & others) and being brave enough to start and sustain conversations that really matter. “Each of us has that innate ability to attain and maintain our own optimal health” - the real healer lies within. — Avanti Kumar Singh I’m honored to bring this second episode of the fourth season of The Mother’s Quest Podcast with Avanti Kumar Singh, a physician, teacher and guide with a unique ability to open our minds and help us find the healer within through Ayurvedic medicine. The inspiration for this episode with Avanti came during a car ride last August from Camp GLP (Good Life Project) to the Newark airport with two friends I attended the weekend experience with, Lizzy Russinko and Judy Blank Zinnato. We were exchanging notes about our favorite workshops from the weekend and all the lessons we learned, when Lizzy shared the life-changing wisdom she gained from hearing Avanti present. Judy and I were both so sorry we had missed it, and I vowed in that moment to do my best to connect with Avanti and to share her wisdom with you. The conversation, eight months in the making, did not disappoint! I loved the journey we explored together, from the impact of Avanti’s own mother and the Indian traditions that shaped her healthy childhood to her health crisis while studying to be an emergency physician and how that created a spark moment that brought her back to her roots and Ayurveda. Touching on each E.P.I.C guidepost, Avanti shares how Ayurveda can become a powerful lens for living a healthy, reflective life, one where we open our minds, and tap into our own ability to provide counter-balance to the things that are troubling us and support our own healing. Within that frame, we touched on so many topics, from Ayurveda and parenting to menopause, intermittent fasting and how to support our children as they transition to college and beyond. Avanti gives us a challenge to explore our daily routines, identify any trouble spots and then apply the teachings of Ayurveda to craft our own remedies. And after we finished recording, Avanti offered to share an even deeper exploration of Ayurvedic principles, give us a chance to ask her questions, and share what we’ve uncovered about our daily routines through a Master Class that we’ll be offering on April 30th. Sign up for email updates at mothersquest.com and join the facebook group and you’ll be notified on the date and time so you can join us. This conversation is just the beginning for how we can tap into the power of Ayurveda in our own healing. I’m feeling so grateful to start along this path with Avanti as our guide. Much appreciation, P.S. Check out the announcements below and pay this forward to a friend who may be interested. The last few weeks where I live, in California, have been a challenging time. Wildfires raged in Southern and Northern California, taking lives and destroying so much (including my beloved childhood summer camp, Hess Kramer) and causing us to stay indoors or wear masks due to the unhealthy air quality. Through it all, I found myself coming back to the lessons on choosing gratitude in this “Revisited” episode with Nancy Netherland and the dedication from my friend Lizzy Russinko. Just over a year ago, challenged by another wildfire in Sonoma County, Lizzy found reprieve in the connection and hospitality of a neighbor and made a commitment of her own to reach out. If you, like me, are getting ready to gather with family or friends, I encourage you to find some time to listen to this episode with Nancy, to think about where you can find magic and meaning during even the most difficult times, and to join Lizzy in her commitment to pay forward kindness in some way to those who are suffering right now. In Northern California, much needed rains have come and the air has been clearing. I’m grateful for many things…. to breath a little easier, for my family, for women like Nancy Netherland and Lizzy Russinko who inspire me with their own E.P.I.C. life stories, and for the opportunity to reflect on the meaning in my own life, with members of the Mother’s Quest community like you. Feeling thankful for so much and sending wishes for you to “choose gratitude” today too. XOXO, In This Episode You’ll Hear About: Lizzy’s story of connection and commitment amid the wildfires last year Resiliency and mindfulness during traumatic events The importance of creating magic in our lives “Gratituding” as a verb and how to “choose gratitude” Nancy’s favorite book “Man’s Search for Meaning” Advocating for your children’s health The importance of community, especially as a caretaker Building deep relationships with people of differing viewpoints Resources Mentioned: Gratitool Choosing Gratitude Hepatitis C information Man’s Search for Meaning by Viktor Frankl Commonweal – where Nancy learned her framework for self-care Clinical Trials a site that is open to the public to find life saving clinical trials UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital These Inspirational Notecards that Lizzy and her family will be passing around to her community This Episode’s Challenge “Revisited” Building on Nancy Netherland’s story, this challenge came last year from Lizzy Russinko who committed to leave note cards of encouragement and hope around town for her neighbors to find and give, as their community in Sonoma County coped with the wildfires last year. This was their little way of injecting magic and meaning into a time of significant adversity and change. Lizzy invites us to do something special to bring comfort in our neck of the woods. Hello and welcome to this Episode #30 of the Mother’s Quest Podcast, a conversation I’m releasing for the second time with healer, artist, healthcare advocate and mom to two incredible girls Nancy Netherland. Between the hurricanes and the continuing devastation in Puerto Rico, the mass shooting in Vegas, and most recently the wildfires near where I live in the San Francisco Bay Area, I know so many people are struggling with how to find gratitude and meaning in the midst of adversity. I noticed myself coming back to the lessons I learned about finding magic, even in the most challenging circumstances, from Nancy’s stories about her and her daughters in this episode, originally #10. In our conversation, we explored how Nancy’s parents instilled a sense that anything is possible, something she has needed to draw on as she faced the loss of her husband and the serious, chronic illnesses of her daughters. And, she shared how she and her girls cultivate generosity and pay that generosity forward through something they created called “gratitools.” I decided to re-release the episode this week with a new dedication and challenge for all of us from my friend and colleague Lizzy Russinko. Lizzy recently moved with her family from Philadelphia to Petaluma in Northern California where they found themselves in the midst of the devastating wildfires. In her dedication, she shares a story of connection amid uncertainty and her commitment to engage her children in sharing some love and healing in her community. As we listen to this episode with Nancy, I invite us to think about where we can find magic and meaning during these difficult times. And to join Lizzy in her commitment to pay forward love and kindness in some way to those who are suffering right now. Topics discussed in this episode: How Nancy’s parents influenced her childhood by teaching her that anything is possible Resiliency and mindfulness during traumatic events The importance of creating magic in our lives “Gratituding” as a verb Nancy’s favorite book “Man’s Search for Meaning” Advocating for your children’s health The importance of community, especially as a caretaker Building deep relationships with people of differing viewpoints Resources mentioned in this episode: Gratitool Choosing Gratitude Hepatitis C information Man’s Search for Meaning by Viktor Frankl Commonweal – where Nancy learned her framework for self-care Clinical Trials a site that is open to the public to find life saving clinical trials UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital These Inspirational Notecards that Lizzy and her family will be passing around to her community This Week’s Challenge: Building on Nancy Netherland’s story, this challenge comes from Lizzy Rossinko who dedicated the episode. Over the next month Lizzy’s family is going to leave note cards of encouragement and hope around town for her neighbors to find and give, as their community at Sonoma County copes with the wildfires. This will be their little way of injecting magic and meaning into a time of significant adversity and change. Lizzy invites us to do something special to bring comfort and home in our neck of the woods. Announcements Mother’s Quest Circle Pilot You’re a mindful mother. Something magical happens when people gather together in the same space. Something that can’t happen in online gathering spaces in quite the same way. Gatherings take many forms: Retreats, workshops, conferences. Walk-outs, protests, sit-ins. Tea parties, play groups, picnics. But the one unifier is that buzz, the energy, that each person feels when they’re there. A buzz they’ll each carry with them long after. That’s what I’m talking about with this week’s guest, Lizzy Russinko of The Brave Gatherers and A Life Unscripted. Lizzy is a bold change maker. A hand lettering artist, an activist, and a community gathering creator. She literally makes space for transformation and connection. Lizzy creates amazing retreats and also guides other message-driven, soulful business owners who want to make intimate in-person gatherings a part of what they offer in business too. In this episode, Lizzy and I discuss: How organizing movements and disruptions became a foundational experience for Lizzy and showed her that something powerful happens when people gather together. Journaling, word making, accepting our weirdness, and the impulse to share. Where the real, magical, vibrational energy that amazing retreats create comes from. What in-person conversations can do that internet communities can’t. How motherhood has fed and informed the trajectory of Lizzy’s business. What it means to have conversations that matter. The role of vision boards and creative action in what we do. Creating a safe container for community and what happens to that community after the retreat. What you, as someone who creates in-person gatherings, communicate to the world about who you are and how this can resonate deeply with others. What happens when you make every single guest feel valued and an essential part of the experience from start to finish. What you need to know about yourself before you ever begin planning a gathering. Find Lizzy Russinko online at TheBraveGatherers.com to get connected with her community of new and seasoned gatherers and access her Great Conversations interviews and resources. You can also find her at RetreatRoadmap.com or view her inspired hand lettering on her Instagram handle, this_unscripted_life. Have you thought about hosting a retreat for your followers? What about creating a local event for women in your area? Today's guest, Lizzy Russinko, will help you create plans or cultivate a new desire for an in-person gathering. Lizzy is the go-to person to help soulful entrepreneurs plan their first one-day retreat. She believes that women everywhere are craving in-person connection, and retreats are an incredibly powerful way to elevate your voice and build your community. Retreat Roadmap makes the whole retreat planning process easy, fun, and super simple, giving you the tools and inspiring the confidence to carve out a unique space for your business in the retreat landscape. IN THIS EPISODE 0:17 Lizzy is the go-to person to help soulful entrepreneurs create their own retreat. 1:34 I, Tonya, am a mindset coach, doesn't mean that I don't have mindset blocks. It's been really fun working with you Lizzy to see you break through blocks and create treats. You've helped me break through my blocks around having a retreat. 2:55 Lizzy has a background in higher education and was a faculty member before her journey into motherhood. She did a lot of crisis response which helps her while planning for everything that can happen during retreats. After leaving her job and having a baby, Lizzy still felt the need to have a community. She started a community called Inspired Family and through that, she realized she wanted to create intimate experiences for women. 6:11 Her goal became digging deep and creating an impact through retreats. 8:36 She realized as she started planning retreats she came at it differently. She created the experience and created retreats to step away from life, connect with others and nourishment. Getting deep with yourself and getting deep with others. She realized you can go to or plan one-day retreats that are life changing for your business and clients. 11:14 Lizzy is all about creating retreats that are accessible and doable for everyone, not just the top people who can afford them. She also realizes that women have babies and partners who can't take that time off to support and allow women to take time off. 12:30 Being an introvert or an empath, or someone who needs time away, finding ways to recharge and replenish energy is important. One day retreats sound great to me. The one day and capitalizing on that energy, it's a lot easier to do. 16:18 Replenish is an important part of a retreat is to relax. You can offer a journey that women can go on with themselves and a few other women and have these beautiful shifts in the time with themselves and others. 18:06 We all need to be creating retreats to our tribes so we can get them in front of ourselves, meeting them face to face and show them how much we appreciate them. There's an elusive desire and then the question of where do I start? In your case Lizzy, you're providing a blueprint for that question of where you start. 19:28 If you have a vision and a purpose and you know who your target market is, all you need to do is a little research and find a location. Start with your business. Retreat planning is the easy part. If you're questioning if you want to plan a retreat, you've already built your business and done the hard work of growing as yourself. 20:56 What is so cool about retreats that once you plan a retreat, you can do it again. You can plan a one or two day retreat four times a year if you've got your location and the relationships with sponsors. Someone isn't just going to stumble upon your website and drop $5,000 on a trip with you, but if it's more reasonable, they're going to join you. 24:06 One of Lizzy's clients doesn't have her followers close to where she's at location wise. Lizzy says that she's told her client that even if she's got followers all over the world, it's still possible to find 15 people to join you on a local journey with you. 15:11 The purpose of doing retreats is seeing your work in action. It also builds credibility when you see it on the website and know that a person who is having a retreat values intimacy and connection. Retreats also give you the ability to position yourself as an expert because you're showing yourself on stage. 27:35 For your first retreat, Lizzy encourages co-collaboration and co-creation so if you're new at hosting a retreat, you're not alone. Working with partners is valuable because meeting people and connecting with women. You're also able to ebb and flow and have some down time if you have a partner. 29:25 Lizzy helps you create a day that's a journey and where meal placement goes and other events happen. She can break the event down and work through your fears and unknown. 31:29 Lizzy just finished her most recent event. It was her last official east coast retreat because she and her family moved from Philidelphia to Sonoma County, California. Leading up to the retreat, her caterer canceled, but because she had planned, she had her backups and it wasn't a change of plans, it was just a shift. She ended up with the caterer she really wanted. The shift can bring us back to where we're supposed to be and teach us something. There are times when there's something better when something doesn't go as planned, but you can say thank you for the events that happen. 39:06 Lizzy will teach you through her challenge how to build sponsor relationships as you explore your answer to if you're ready for to jump into a retreat. She's had people go through her challenge thinking they'll do an event in 2018 and after that challenge, they'll change their mind to fall 2017. 41:50 There's something happening right now with women rising up to share their message. Now is the time to share and go on a journey together. There's something different happening in this online space. There's a lot of realizing that there's enough money, buys, work and that's causing people to come together and build community. A rising tide lifts all ships. Women all over are craving support, connection and purpose. 45:37 You help others connect online and in person is how you will get sales. There's nothing better than building relationships to build businesses. People want you to sell to them because you're doing good work that matters. 46:30 All of the places you can find Lizzy are below and we'll be checking in with Lizzy next year to see how many women used her to help plan their first retreat. [bctt tweet="Abundance is possible once you realize what it means for you." username="tonyarineer"] KEY TAKEAWAYS Lizzy is the go-to person to help soulful entrepreneurs create their own retreat. Her goal became digging deep and creating an impact through retreats. The purpose of doing retreats is seeing your work in action.
