In celebration of the thirtieth anniversary of Tachyon Publications, we invited publisher Jacob Weisman to join us in a fascinating exploration of the independent publisher whose list of authors includes classic tales from Stanley Weinbaum, A.E. Van Vogt, and even Mary Shelley, as well as major work from contemporary writers like Peter S. Beagle, Patricia McKillip, Michael Swanwick, Terry Bisson, Jane Yolen, Ellen Klages, Eileen Gunn, Joe Lansdale, Nalo Hopkinson, James Morrow, Lavie Tidhar, and Daniel Pinkwater, and newer writers such as Mary Thompson, Austin Habersahw, Martin Cahill, and Josh Rountree. We touch upon the challenges of building an independent press in a rapidly changing marketplace, the importance of anthologies in identifying and preserving trends in the field, and what to expect next from Tachyon.

Jason O' Toole has sat down for 40 + hours of interviews with one of Ireland's most notorious criminals, drugs traffickerJohn Gilligan. The result was a gripping and facasinating book called "The Gilligan Tapes" and a 3 part documentary which is airing now.I spoke to Jason about how the their initial meeting came about in 2008 when he interviewed Gilligan in a maximum security prison and how this would eventually led to his most recent project.I asked Jason if he feels he knows Gilligan as a man after all this time, whether he's a psychopath or not, if he genuinely feels remorse for this past crimes and how honest Jason felt Gilligan was being with him. We discussed Gilligan's life-long gambling habit, his sense of humor about grave situations and if he may have a "Napoleon" complex about his short stature. Jason gives insight into Gilligan's opinions of Gardai, Martin Cahill, the members of his old crime gang and who Gilligan claims shot the journalist, Veronica Guerin.TIMESTAMPS00:00 Intro, how Jason met John Gilligan 9:53 Does Jason know John Giligan as a person10:43 Gilligan's use of humor- genuine or a front?12:13 Does Gilligan have a “Napoleon Complex” ?14:43 Gilligan's relationship with MARTIN CAHILL “THE GENERAL” 17:33 Gilligan's view of Gardai 20:53 Did Gilligan come across as an “underworld-figure” type in person?23:30 Martin Cahill's assassination 25:15 Gardai II 26:33 Gilligan's peak as a multi-millionaire 30:37 WHO SHOT VERONICA GUERIN 36:43 Gilligan's claim that Veronica Guerin shot herself in the leg37:43 Is Gilligan BROKE & ADDICTED TO GAMBLING??44:53 Gilligan's view on legalization of drugs 46:23 GILLIGAN'S NEAR-ASSASSINATION 47:33 How honest did Gilligan's seem? 52:13 Any hidden motives for doing the book/doc ? 54:33 Does Gilligan believe he's going to hell?55:53 Is Gilligan a “NARCISSIST” or a “PSYCHOPATH” ??1:07:15 GOVERNMENT MINISTERS ATTACK THE DOCUMENTARY 1:10:33 Would Jason do this type of project again?***PLEASE SUBSCRIBE & LEAVE A REVIEW IF YOU ENJOY THE EPISODE***JASON'S BOOK (Must read!!!) https://amzn.to/44LICTYGOOD LISTENER PODCAST YOUTUBE PAGE https://www.youtube.com/@thegoodlistenerpodcast/featured

Colin Farrell might only be in this movie for thirty seconds, but we're still gonna break two hours talking about it. This week, Above the Title takes a look at the only cameo of Colin's career (we're pretty sure) and the capper to his early association with Joel Schumacher - it's crusading journalist biopic and failed Cate Blanchett Oscar play Veronica Guerin! We can't agree on whether this movie is good but we do both love Colin's performance here. Topics include the Nicole Kidman AMC promo, the complicated history of skinheads, the Mount Rushmore of Blanchett performances, and, weirdly, a return to cinematic depictions of Dublin crime boss Martin Cahill. Connor gets a lot of mileage out of his Eddie Brock impression. Cole speaks a controversial truth about nepo babies. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

When the Asphodel Queen decides she'll die to save our people from her ex-husband's tyranny, she commands me to build her a coffin, the very first in our world's history. Her ageless face of ivory and emerald is water on a windless day; her stillness betrays nothing of her decision. As the Senate screams in sorrow, I am held by her imperial glare, the enormity of my task sinking in like sunlight on skin. “Me, Your Majesty? I'm but a humble craftsman.” Her voice rises above the growing din, as panic races through data-vines and across the crystal-network. | Copyright 2022 by Martin Cahill. Narrated by Stefan Rudnicki.

Thursday, 18th August 1994. The 15th Commonwealth Games opens in Victoria, Canada. "Love Is All Around" by Wet Wet Wet is #1 in the UK charts. In Rathmines, Dublin, Martin Cahill is assassinated in his car. So begins 1998's THE GENERAL (well, apart from the first two things), written & directed by John Boorman and starring Brendan Gleeson as Mr Cahill. Also appearing are Jon Voight as his Kerryman garda nemesis and Adrian Dunbar as his goodbuddy pal. It's part heist movie, part outlaw biopic, part rumination on insitutional abuse and societal shift in Ireland, or as Calum most eloquently states, "This is Ireland, for better or worse". Next up: MESSIAH OF EVIL, 1973.

The godmeat stank of hibiscus and saltwater. Its noxious divinity threaded through the kitchen, the air itself feeling suddenly buoyant in its wake. If Hark closed his eyes, he could almost imagine himself on the beach where Spear had killed the Sea Mother; pale green water lapping at his feet, miles of white sand stretching into the distance, while pink blossoms bobbed in the surf. He could almost see Spear standing on top of the godthing, her weapon shimmering with the blue blood of the dying Beast. | Copyright 2018 by Martin Cahill. Narrated by Stefan Rudnicki.
