Sallie & Danielle speak to Mary Thompson. She shares her perspective of learning of her husband Spencer's same-sex attraction and why they decided to share their story publicly. Mary processes things through writing and shares many experiences on her blog, which is available to read. One of our favorite things to do on many #FranchiseFriday shows this year is catchup with friends from the franchise space who we haven't seen since before the pandemic. Mark and Mary Kay Liston share what they've been up to since retiring from Neighborly ... or as Mary Kay calls it, "graduating!" We discuss how to prepare for what's next, plan for your successor to succeed, and have an exit strategy that helps everyone involved. We'll also get into the current challenges they see for franchisees, how small business owners can navigate these issues to survive and thrive, and what they both see as key characteristics of great leaders. > Shout outs today to Mary Thompson, Dina Dwyer Owens, and Joe Bourdow! > Thanks to Serviceminder and Exults.

This week's episode I got to speak to a wonderful Ayurvedic Teacher Mary Thompson, who has been teaching Ayurveda for over 20 years. She has a wealth of knowledge and has taught me so much about women's health, the importance of digestion, fertility and living in alignment. We speak about Ayurveda's perspective around women's health, hormonal balancing and especially fertility, pregnancy, digestion, the mind-body connection, the dosha's and how to understand when they are out of balance. You will learn about how to optimize your fertility health journey through bringing the doshas into balance, and the key to improve your fertility health is Ayurvedic cleansing, something that I love teaching and guiding women through on my 4-week one on one Digest Your Life program. We hope you love this episode and it gives you the guidance and inspired action to learn and integrate Ayurveda as a part of your daily lifestyle. Mary Thompson has been an experienced educator and a heart-centered mentor to Ayurvedic practitioners. Having taught Ayurveda for over twenty years, she found joy in supporting her students as they stepped into their professional lives as Ayurvedic Health Counselors and Ayurvedic Practitioners. As a teacher at the California College of Ayurveda for many years, she introduced Ayurvedic principles to adults who wanted to become practitioners. She left teaching there in 2018 to develop her own business supporting and mentoring practitioners. Never far from the classroom, she began collaborating with a number of schools and programs, preparing curriculum and teaching both on site and online. Now retired, she enjoys finding ways to continue to support students and practitioners through podcasts, workshops and online continuing education. We often find ourselves in situations where we react with frustration. Mary and Cate chat about the potential that we all possess to transform our frustration into a much better alternative: amusement. The truth is that we all have “buttons” that trigger emotional responses in a patterned way. By taking the initiative to become aware of our triggers and reactions, we can encounter a new perspective. Mary discusses her own experience with developing a new understanding of her own negative reactions. By knowing her own triggers and what made them worse, she discovered the possibility of redirecting that negative energy into amusement instead. Cate addresses the fact that we often are engendering those negative emotions with foods that bring out the worse. There are many factors that influence our reactions, and the more that we do to minimize those factors, the more likely it is that a change in perspective will make a positive impact on our level of frustration What you’ll get out of tuning in: How we can better deal with frustration Why our diet can influence emotions How our perspective impacts our reaction Links Mentioned in Episode Mary's website Mary's facebook Discover more about Body Thrive Body Thrive Book Show Highlights: 31:40 – In modern life, we are often pulled in so many different directions that we don’t have time to just sit and relax. We have an opportunity to build strength in our core and get more grounded and centered by simply changing our perspective. 35:55 – When it comes to our very intense emotions, stirring them up can reveal a deep reaction pattern. We can take advantage of this realization to become more aware of what it is that is triggering us to react in a certain way. 38:30 – Everyone walks around with “buttons” that can easily be triggered by those around us. We must become aware of those triggers that exist in order to address our reactions. 40:40 – Emotions can be addressed by looking at our diet patterns. By avoiding foods that engender those negative emotions, we can gain more control about how we interact with the world around us. Favorite Quotes: “We just get tired of going in so many different directions.” – Mary Thomspon “It’s always already available.” – Cate Stillman ”I think so often we think that something outside of us is causing our frustration.” – Mary Thompson “If I am still blaming someone else for my emotions, there is something that I don’t know.” – Mary Thompson “It goes from frustration to amusement to amazement.” – Mary Thompson Guest BIO: Mary Thompson has been teaching Ayurveda for more than 20 years. Driven to find answers after a health challenge, Mary found them in the Ayurvedic principles. She then committed to sharing these principles with others so they, too, could find a path to better health on all levels.
When it comes to getting better sleep, Ayurveda has a lot to teach us. With more than 20 years of experience learning and teaching Ayurveda, Mary Thompson has a wealth of information to share about how we can utilize Ayurveda to address the rampant sleep issues we are seeing in our society. Sleeplessness and sleep issues are now not only an issue in adults, but also in kids. How can we address this detrimental and widespread issue? Cate and Mary chat about the culmination of our various lifestyle habits that lead to sleep deprivation, especially regarding electronics and diet. Most of the serotonin that helps us stay asleep is produced in the gut, and when we disregard our digestion, we face disruptions in our sleep. Stimulants like coffee make this issue even worse and only add to the loss of sleep over time. Adding technology makes the issue even worse. Overuse of bright screens on phones and laptops, especially late at night, disrupt our natural sleep rhythm. Mary identifies habits we can use to address these issues in our lives, rather than masking the issues with sleep aids. Tune into this episode to learn how you can take the step to get better sleep! What you’ll get out of tuning in: How habit formation affects sleep Why diet consistency is key to improving sleep How technology affects sleep Links Mentioned in the Episode: Mary Thompson’s Website Discover more about Body Thrive Body Thrive Book Show Highlights: 1:55 - When the lights go down, not everyone finds it easy to get a good night’s rest. Modern lifestyles often lead to an imbalance in our serotonin and norepinephrine level, which can make it difficult to fall asleep and stay asleep. 5:30 - Ayurveda maintains that health issues begin in the gut - and disordered sleep is no different! If our diets are not conducive to our health, then we will not produce enough of the chemicals we need to fall asleep. 10:15 - The light from our “sticky” addictive electronics target our pineal gland, which is what produces melatonin. With this light exposure, our brains still think it is daytime! 17:50 - When we reach for stimulants such as coffee, the downward spiral in our sleep continues by causing an acidic gut for the probiotic population. This unhealthy environment makes it even more difficult to produce the chemicals we need for restful sleep. 23:55 - When it comes to change our diets, the best advice is to start with consistency in one meal. We increase our chances of success and the potential to thrive by not making too many changes at once. Your Favorite Quotes: “What am I doing that’s creating the imbalance?” - Mary Thompson “Whatever tendencies we have get aggravated or they get emphasized.” - Cate Stillman. “Who do you really wanna be, how do you really wanna show up?” - Cate Stillman Guest BIO: Mary Thompson has been teaching Ayurveda for more than 20 years. Women’s friendships take a lot of work: hangouts, texts, emails, phone calls, and even gift-giving. Amanda Herbert says all those expectations about what it means to be a good girlfriend to your girlfriends, might have carried through from the 18th century, when no less than the British Empire depended on them. And: With the evolution of social media, communication styles have changed. Anand Rao is working with college students to develop best practices for the world of Facebook, Instagram, and anonymous platforms like Yik-Yak. Later in the show: An online database of Grimm’s fairy tales reveals the evolution of these stories. Robert Godwin-Jones created the database and says the earlier versions were often violent and sexually suggestive. Plus: Pro-choice advocates often complain about the way abortion is talked about—or not talked about—in pop culture. Mary Thompson says that two kinds of books, mommy memoirs and mother-daughter memoirs, are tackling the tough topic of abortion in new ways.
