In the weeks after Paul Stine's murder, the Bay Area waited for the next strike—but what came next wasn't a confirmed attack. Instead, the Zodiac launched a long, unnerving campaign of letters, ciphers, and threats that kept the region in fear for years. In Episode 7, “The Cipher Years,” we track the communications that defined the next phase of the case: the Dripping Pen card, the infamous Z340 cipher, shifting “scorecards,” and messages that escalated from taunting investigators to threatening mass harm.We also examine major flashpoints from 1969–1970: the letter to celebrity attorney Melvin Belli, the disputed abduction of Kathleen Johns, the “My name is—” cipher, the Mount Diablo map, the “Little List” letter, and the chilling Halloween card sent to journalist Paul Avery. This is the story of how the Zodiac may have paused his confirmed killings—but never stopped trying to control the narrative.00:00 After Stine Fear01:06 Dripping Pen Card01:58 Z340 Cipher Arrives34:43 Building Trust First36:55 Assembling the Review Team37:53 Forensic Rethink and DNA41:23 AI Promise and Pitfalls42:51 Suspects and Linked Crimes44:25 Science in the Field51:31 Why Murders Get Solved54:21 Assumptions and Outliers55:51 Managing Media Tip Floods01:01:36 Ego Games and Wrap UpNext episode: the investigation itself—how multiple agencies coordinated, what evidence they had, and why an arrest never came. The Robert Black Murders mentioned in this episode can be found in season 1 Episodes 3-8You can buy the books mentioned in the podcast's by clicking the links belowTom's Best Selling Book:Ruxton: The First Modern Murder Paperback EditionRuxton: The First Modern Murder Kindle EditionSimon's Best Selling Book:The Ten Percent Paperback EditionThe Ten Percent Kindle EditionOur Website: https://crimetimeinc.com/If you like this show please leave a review. Anthony Albanese was moved from The Lodge to another location around 6pm, as the police investigated a bomb threat. He was able to return once a search has been concluded, after 9pm. Strap in for parental outrage as Clay Edwards breaks down the viral story of Madison dad Shane Saxton in this intense segment from Episode #1150. Amid back-to-back bomb threats at Madison Station Elementary—shutting down classes and traumatizing kids—Shane shows up at the church evacuation site to get his six-year-old and sibling off the bus. School admins stonewall him three times: "Nobody can get their kids." With no clear safety plan in place, Shane declares he's taking them anyway. The vice principal relents, hands over the kids, and other parents follow suit with a quick sign-out. But the drama escalates: Just a quarter-mile down the road, Madison police pull Shane over—someone from the school called, claiming he caused a "disturbance." Shane's raw video (complete with dashcam footage) blasts the absurdity: Why divert cops from a real threat to harass a dad protecting his family? Clay plays the full clip, shares his blood-boiling reaction as a parent, and opens the lines and texts for your takes—was it bureaucratic overreach, poor communication, or necessary protocol? Listeners chime in: "I'd have done the same," "Clean up your own house before calling cops," and debates on "what if" scenarios. Clay owns up to announcing pickup spots on air (potentially tipping off hoaxers) and calls for better school-parent transparency. If you're a parent fed up with system failures, this segment demands accountability and exposes the real chaos in Central Mississippi schools.
On this fiery Friday episode, Clay dives into the chaos shaking Central Mississippi. From back-to-back bomb threats at Madison Station Elementary—leading to school closures and federal involvement—to a mass shooting threat at Hillcrest Christian School, where 38-year-old Abby Nicole Taylor was arrested and charged with terrorist threats on a shockingly low $75,000 bond. Clay breaks down the stupidity behind these acts and questions the low stakes for such serious crimes. Hear the frustrating story of parent Shane Saxton, who defied school admins to get his kids off a bus during the lockdown, only to get pulled over by police afterward for "causing a disturbance." Clay shares Shane's viral video and opens the lines for listener reactions—was it overreach or necessary protocol? Plus, a shoutout to local heroes like the Flora Police Department keeping things safe. Sports fans, celebrate with Clay as he congratulates New Orleans Saints legend Drew Brees on his Hall of Fame induction, reminiscing about epic moments like the Superdome's post-Katrina return game. In hour two, State Auditor Shad White joins to expose a nonprofit focused on human trafficking that's funneling hundreds of thousands of taxpayer dollars to anti-ICE protests—liberal logic at its finest. Then, State Rep. Fred Shanks drops in for the weekly "Under the Dome" segment, covering bills like mobile sports betting, teacher pay raises, and PBM reform moving through the legislature. Clay also touches on local media outrage over changes to a Medgar Evers pamphlet and calls for better parental communication during crises. Packed with texts, calls, and live reactions, this episode fights for the soul of America and demands positive solutions in a broken system. Tune in for raw takes on Jackson's real issues—no holds barred. Listen now and join the conversation!

Today's Headlines: Trump's personal lawyer Alina Habba just got bounced by the 3rd Circuit as New Jersey's top federal prosecutor, because—surprise!—she was never legally appointed in the first place. Meanwhile, Trump picked a fight with Tim Walz, accidentally revealed he got an MRI, then insisted he has no idea what body part it scanned… but definitely not his brain because he “aced” a cognitive test. His doctor then released a memo assuring us his MRI was “pretty normal,” which is exactly what you'd say if it wasn't. Trump is also defending Pete Hegseth, who's accused of war crimes after reportedly ordering a second strike on survivors of a boat attack. House Democrats are digging into FBI Director Kash Patel for allegedly using government jets as his personal Vegas shuttle to visit his girlfriend (and let her take joyrides too). In totally normal news, the administration is also taking an equity stake—yes, equity—in a new chip startup founded by Intel's former CEO, while Costco is suing to get refunds on tariffs that were apparently collected illegally. Additionally, three of Chuck Schumer's offices got MAGA-themed bomb threats. And finally, new research says giving kids smartphones before age 12 dramatically increases their risks of depression, obesity, and terrible sleep. A separate study found that even a one-week social media detox noticeably improves mental health. The show opens with a headline that surprises a lot of listeners: Diddy, while behind bars, organized and funded a full Thanksgiving dinner for 1,000 inmates at FCI Fort Dix, turning a grim holiday for prisoners into a moment of community and solidarity. Then, they shift gears to a controversy involving Russell Wilson, whose former teammate called the Thanksgiving celebration at Wilson’s home “weird,” sparking debate about celebrity privacy, social media morals, and whether public figures can truly separate personal life from public perception. The Messy family weighs in—half siding with privacy rights, half calling it tone-deaf. The tone becomes legal and dramatic when hosts dive into news that Todd Tucker is challenging his prenup with Kandi Burruss, claiming the agreement is “unconscionable,” contradicting terms she originally accepted. The segment explores prenup fairness, community expectations, and what this means for high-profile Black marriages. Finally, the discussion turns political as Chuck Schumer blames MAGA supporters for the multiple bomb threats sent recently to his New York offices — a reminder that threats to democracy still lurk behind partisan noise. Illegal Alien SCUMBAG FINDS OUT after his BOMB THREAT BACKFIRES! FAFO!
Today's Headlines: The FBI is in Utah chasing down leads in the Charlie Kirk assassination, releasing video of the suspected gunman's escape and offering $100K for tips. Meanwhile, Trump plans to award Kirk the Medal of Freedom, VP JD Vance escorted his casket, and MAGA lawmakers are pushing for a Capitol statue. Security scares piled on, too—Capitol Police cleared a bomb threat at DNC HQ and multiple HBCUs went into lockdown after threats, all later deemed not credible. Bloomberg dropped 18,000 Epstein emails showing his tight post-conviction ties with Ghislaine Maxwell, plus a spreadsheet of $1.8M in gifts and payments. Across the pond, Britain's ambassador to the U.S. got fired after Epstein's “birthday book” and emails revealed his buddy-buddy relationship with the disgraced financier. On the economy, grocery inflation hit the highest since 2022—coffee up 20%, beef up 16%, even bananas pricier—thanks in part to tariffs. And abroad, Brazil's ex-president Jair Bolsonaro was convicted of plotting a coup, including assassinations of Lula da Silva and others, and sentenced to 27 years. Unsurprisingly, he's crying “witch hunt” as his supporters riot.
