 Martin Mc Guinness. A Reflection.Friday the 21 March was the eighth anniversary of the death of our friend and leader Martin McGuinness. Like many others, I am sure, I was perplexed as it dawned on me that eight years had passed since we lost him. In my head I thought it was five or six years ago. But as we people of a certain age should now know time waits for no one. I remember as if it was yesterday dashing to the hospital. Even though we were anticipating his death there was nonetheless a numbness, a shock to be told that Martin was gone. A Courageous Advocate for PalestinianMs. Francesca Albanese is the Special Rapporteur for the United Nations in the Palestinian territories. She is a remarkable champion for human rights and international law whose moral integrity and deep rooted humanity are an inspiration. Her leadership on Palestinian rights, her unremitting and courageous criticism of Israel's decades long illegal occupation of the Palestinian territories, is an example for all of us who seek a just peace between the peoples of Palestine and of Israel.Last week Ms. Albanese was in the South of Ireland addressing Universities, giving interviews, attending the massive pro-Palestinian march in Dublin on Saturday and meeting a wide range of individuals and groups.  The only answer is UnityThere are at least 50,000 people in Belfast reliant on PIP (Personal Independence Payment). Given that levels of disadvantage and poor health indicators are higher in west Belfast it is safe to assume that many thousands of families in that part of the city are especially vulnerable to British government cuts to the PIP system.Over the years Labour governments have shown scant regard for their socialist roots. Often they are just a pale imitation of the Tories who care even less. They especially show no empathy when it comes to the North. Year after year the British block grant fails to meet our basic public service requirements whether in the provision of health, education, housing, agriculture or the environment. The Executive scrambles to stretch a finite budget.

My Internment by Roseleen WalshRoseleen Walsh is one of 36 women who were interned in the early 1970s. Her latest book – My Internment – tells the very personal story of her life as a young woman in west Belfast in the late 60s and early 70s. Of the constant pressure and danger of living under British occupation and of her time as an internee in Armagh Women's Prison.Roseleen has been writing for many years, including during her time in Armagh Prison. She is a writer of great skill including of poetry, plays and books. She is also a very determined individual as her account of her first days in Armagh makes clear. When her cell door was opened for the first time she remembers that “there before me was, not a mess, but a blank canvass. Immediately I knew white walls would suit me best for I intended making those walls a work of art! I would surround myself within the comfort of my own words.  Since I was young, I had found it hard to express myself to others until I discovered that poetry was a wonderful way to articulate what I meant… The walls were to become like pages of a diary.”Climate CrisisJanuary was a month of climate opposites. Storm Éowyn is now believed to have been one of the worst to ever hit the island of Ireland. It broke wind-speed records; forced the cancellation of flights and ferries; and within hours had cut power supplies to over one million households and businesses north and south.  Tens of thousands were also left without water as treatment plants lost power.Although last month Ireland was colder than usual January was still the hottest month ever recorded across the world. More worrying it is the 18th month out of the last 19 when the average global temperature was greater than that set by the world's governments.  The World Stands at a Tipping PointIn the months leading up to the invasion of Iraq by American and British forces and others in March 2003 Martin McGuinness and I warned Tony Blair and President Bush not to invade. We pointed out that it would be a breach of international law. At one particular meeting in Mr. Blair's office in Downing Street Martin and I urged the British PM to learn the lessons of British involvement in Ireland and in other conflicts. We told him and his officials they were living in cloud cuckoo land; “if you go into Iraq it will be another Vietnam and it will be a huge mistake.”One British official told us that it would all be over in a matter of months. Martin told him “... given the previous history of successive British military expeditions to Ireland, that certainly would not be my view of how the situation in Iraq is going to move in the next short while." The Israeli genocide in the Gaza Strip and the pogroms against Palestinian towns and villages in the west Bank strike a similar note today and a lesson for the international community. The support of the British Government and the White House for the Zionist assaults on the Palestinian people is shameful. It is also, like the war in Iraq, short sighted and counter-productive. Over 60,000 Gazans have been killed – mostly women and children and 80% of the infrastructure of Gaza has been destroyed; a thousand are dead in the west Bank; south Lebanon is ablaze; Israeli forces have moved deeper into Syria, and the US President is seeking to expel the Palestinian people of Gaza from their homeland. The world stands at a tipping point amid the real risk of a possible wider conflagration.

Having taken family members of two bank officials hostage, an armed gang forced the workers to help them steal used and unused pound sterling banknotes. The money was loaded into a van and driven away in two trips. This was one of the largest bank robberies in the history of the United Kingdom.The Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI), the Independent Monitoring Commission (IMC), the British government and the Taoiseach all claimed the Provisional Irish Republican Army (IRA) was responsible. This was denied by the IRA and by Sinn Féin. Throughout 2005, the police forces in Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland made arrests and carried out house searches. A sum of £2.3 million was impounded at the house of a financial adviser, Ted Cunningham, in County Cork and Phil Flynn was forced to resign as chairman of the Bank of Scotland (Ireland), because he was a director of one of Cunningham's companies. Cunningham was convicted in 2009 of money laundering, had his conviction quashed in 2012 and was convicted at retrial in 2014. Chris Ward, one of the bank officials threatened by the gang, was himself arrested in November 2005 and charged with robbery. The prosecution offered no evidence at trial and he was released.Northern Bank announced soon after the heist that it would replace its own bank notes, in denominations of £5, £10, £20, £50 and £100. Alongside the murder of Robert McCartney in 2005, the robbery adversely affected the Northern Ireland peace process. It caused a hardening in the relationship between the Taoiseach Bertie Ahern and the Sinn Féin representatives Gerry Adams and Martin McGuinness. RespectOn Sunday last I spoke at the 40th Anniversary Commemoration of the killing by the SAS of IRA Volunteers Henry Hogan and Declan Martin in Dunloy County Antrim. Declan was 18. Henry was 20.I was also the speaker at the funerals in February 1984. At that time hundreds of  RUC  and scores of landrovers surrounded Henry Hogans wake house and myself, Martin McGuinness, Danny Morisson and Owen Carron linked arms with other mourners to create a human barrier around the house and the funeral to shield them from the RUC. That is the way many republican funerals were conducted in those days.A Window on the PastAsk almost everyone you know about the date when internment was introduced and the 9 August 1971 will be the popular answer. .That was the day 342 men and boys were dragged from their homes in the early hours of the morning to be beaten, interrogated and interned. Fourteen were the victims of planned torture – the Hooded Men.Ceasefire NowThe European Union's Foreign Policy chief Joseph Borrell took issue with US President Joe Biden and his remarks that the Israeli state's offensive against the Palestinian people had been excessive. “If you believe that too many people are being killed maybe you should provide less arms,” Mr. Borrell said…”If the international community believes  that this is a slaughter, that too many people are being killed, maybe they have to think about the provision of arms.”

Agreement 25The three days of the conference to mark Agreement 25 at Queens University, a quarter of a century after the Good Friday Agreement, was an opportunity to meet again many of those who were there when the Agreement was thrashed out in 1998. I was particularly happy to see George Mitchell. He was in great form and for me his speech was the highlight of conference. Lucid, reasoned, futuring and compelling. The absence of John Hume, Ian Paisley, Martin McGuinness, David Trimble, Seamus Mallon and David Irvine and others was a reminder of the transient nature of life and the permanency of death.  Voting for the PresidentThis is not the only matter that the Irish Government is failing on. Dublin Castle was the venue last week of “Together Again – Le Chéile Arís” – the third of the Irish government's Global Irish Civic Forums. These events bring together representatives of the Irish diaspora from across the world to promote a conversation on issues of concern and interest to the diaspora.In Praise Of Tulips. I bought a bag of assorted tulip bulbs before Christmas. I was looking for daffodils and picked up the tulips by mistake. When I discovered this I was disappointed. I love daffodils. Now I love tulips as well. They are in full bloom. In pots. Beautiful bright colours. Pinks and reds.Earth Day – defending our natural environmentLast Saturday was Earth Day. The theme was ‘Invest in Our Planet' with the emphasis on encouraging businesses and people to use sustainable practices in their everyday work.The first Earth Day took place in April 1970 in the USA. Our guest is Chiara Sangiorgio, Death Penalty Adviser at Amnesty International, who tells us about the history of the death penalty and its effectiveness. The programme begins with two perspectives on capital punishment: Yoshikuni Noguchi recounts his time as a prison guard on death row in Japan in the 1970s; then we hear archive recordings of Albert Pierrepoint, Britain's most famous hangman. Poland's former-Minister for Foreign Affairs, Radosław Sikorski, describes how close he came to death in the 2010 Smolensk air disaster, in which the country's President was killed. Paul McLoone, the frontman of The Undertones, a punk-rock band, tells the bizarre story of how he became the broadcasting voice of IRA commander Martin McGuinness when the organisation was banned from British airwaves in 1988. In this episode I'm delighted to welcome John Crawley to the show. John was born in Long Island, New York, in 1957, the son of a Co. Roscommon father and a Co. Kerry mother. Two years later the family moved to Chicago and, in 1972, John moved to the town of Castlerea, Co Roscommon, to live with an aunt. It was During this time he decided to become an active member of the republican movement and resolved to return to the US and join the Marine Corps in order to attain as high a level of military expertise as possible, with express intention of putting those skills to use for the republican cause during the Troubles by joining the Provisional IRA. His recently published memoir is titled The Yank: The True Story Of A Former US Marine in the Irish Republican Army and it is available from Penguin RandomHouse. The ‘broadcasting ban' on 11 Northern Irish organizations including Sinn Fein was finally lifted by Prime Minister John Major on 16th September, 1994, one fortnight after an IRA ceasefire had been achieved. The regulations, implemented six years earlier by Margaret Thatcher and her Home Secretary Douglas Hurd, prevented British TV networks from broadcasting interviews with Gerry Adams and Martin McGuinness, lest they drum up sympathy for Republicanist terrorism. So the broadcasters found a workaround: they employed voice actors to dub over the interviews. A backdrop of shelved whiskey bottles fronted by a no-nonsense wooden counter which separated myself and the only other barman from the clienteleDavid TrimbleDavid Trimble became First Minister along with Seamus Mallon as Deputy First Minister shortly after the referendum that endorsed the Good Friday Agreement. It was December 1999 before other Ministers were appointed. Among them were Martin McGuinness and Bairbre de Brún as Sinn Fein's first two Ministers to the power sharing Executive.

This panel features Sound Recordist and Mixer Mary Harkin; Editor Fionnuala Ní Chíobháin and Camera/Producer Christine O'Connor and is moderated by our Vice-Chair DOP Jaro Waldeck. This event has been made possible with the support of the BAI. Mary Harkin – Sound Mary started her professional career with Telegael, a film, TV and animation production company, based in Galway. There, she worked as a location sound recordist, and also as a post-production sound mixer in the studio. Mary has been a freelancer for over 20 years, working on a wide variety of productions, predominantly documentaries (Ireland's Dirty Laundry, Lá i 1916, Martin McGuinness), entertainment and lifestyle programmes (Rotunda, Bailte, Big year in big school), and also various shows and feature films (Aithrí, Corp agus Anam, Rós na Rún). Mary has also worked in third-level education, providing practical workshops in location sound recording to Communication students. Her work has featured on domestic broadcast channels (RTÉ, TG4, Virgin Media) and also on international channels (BBC, NBC, Golf Channel, ARD, CH4) Christine O'Connor – Camera Christine's career began in the Media industry 31 years ago. Initially working with the technical dept in Cameras and Lighting, shooting and Directing shows for RTE and TG4, Christine moved onto Production in the mid-2000. Having travelled substantially Worldwide on these shows Christine began working with the TG4 Soap Ros na Rún where she began work as Production Co-ordinator and worked up the ranks to become Production Manager with added responsibility for the scripting process. After a number of years Christine moved onto Line Producer with many features and series and was also Network Manager of the Greasán na Méan Skillnet for 7 years developing specific media and technical training. In 2013 Christine began working with Telegael in Spiddal as their Live Action Producer and also in development. To date Christine has produced the most recent Jack Taylor 3×90 mins (2016) TV feature length dramas for ZDF in Germany and Content Media International, currently finished the second series of the RTE/Seven Australia kids comedy drama series Drop Dead Weird 26x 24mins. Christine was the Irish Producer with the ARD Germany comissioned 4 x 90” German Drama series, Der Irland Krimi shot on location in Galway city and county throughout 2019 and 2020. Christine also continues to work on Live Sport OB's in cameras, working on such events as HRH Queen Elizabeth's 2nd visit, both George Bush & Barak Obama's visits, President Michael D. Higgins Inaugurations, EU Summits, European Cup Rugby, 6 Nations Rugby, National Football & Hurling Championships & Leagues, International Soccer, Snooker, Swimming amongt others. Amongst career highlights were interviewing Nelson Mandela when he was President of South Africa in his residence in Capetown and also getting to operate and get a Camera credit on the U2 Live in Slane video 2000. Fionnuala Ní Chíobháin – Edit Fionnuala Ní Chíobháin is an editor of TV programmes and works mainly in the genres of documentary and light entertainment. Over a 15-year career to date, and often working in the Irish language, she has edited celebrated documentaries such as The Story Of Yes, Síle Seoige: Deireadh Tochta and Ar an Oileán as well as documentary series like Big Life Fix, Cumhacht an Nadúr, Idir Mná, Framing Democracy, and What are you Eating. Fionnuala has also had a hand in a wide range of entertainment series such as Room to Improve, Operation Transformation, The Great Irish Bake off, Taithí Gan Teorainn, Pioc do Ride, Masterchef Ireland and Voice of Ireland. Fionnuala hails from Corca Dhuibhne and is a native Irish speaker, she speaks Irish to her family, to her horses and also to herself.

In the Spring of 2019, Scottish police launched investigations into incidents at two football matches. In the first, Aberdeen fans were accused of using colorful language to suggest that English football manager Steven Gerrard was an Orange man. A few weeks later, Aberdeen's own manager Derek McInnes was targeted with similar chants from Celtic fans. The fact that fans from Aberdeen – a largely secular city could find themselves on either side of this type of incident is indicative of the fact that many of us have little understanding of the subject. For one thing, when you remove the accompanying pejoratives, any actual member of the Orange Order would be quite proud of his membership and his heritage. But it's this kind of conflict, based around misunderstanding and prejudice that I was all too familiar with having grown up in the 1980s. On one hand, we saw in the news how the IRA a nominally Catholic terrorist group would plant bombs and do battle with nominally protestant groups like the UVF. But somehow, in the back and forth, amid accusations of doing right and wrong, a group of people known as the Orange Order would get drawn into the conflict seemingly just for holding commemorative marches. Meanwhile, outspoken firebrand protestant politician Ian Paisley was often held up by rivals as the archetypal Orange man even though he had long since left the group. Incidentally, the apparently extremist Paisley went on to form a close friendship with former IRA leader Martin McGuinness. The stereotypes you hear are of presbyterian, Scots Irish doing battle with Irish Catholics. But anyone with even a cursory knowledge of Irish history could tell you this was an inaccurate oversimplification. As someone with mixed Irish and English, Catholic, and Protestant heritage, I've always been curious to learn more about the Orange Order. Who they are, what are their origins, and what they actually believe. And above all, to understand the group in the context of its origins versus what it represents today. For much of the last three decades there have been ongoing solidarity links between Sinn Féin and the ANC. During the years of armed struggle, according to ANC leader and Government Minister, the late Kadar Asmal, the IRA assisted MK, the ANC' s army. MK was founded by Nelson Mandela and others in December 1961.In the 1990s as our own peace strategy evolved Sinn Féin and the IRA called its 1994 cessation Sinn Fein leaders, including myself and Martin McGuinness, Rita O'Hare and others travelled to South Africa. After the Good Friday Agreement was achieved in 1998 ANC leaders, including the current President of South Africa Cyril Ramaphosa travelled to Ireland to speak to the republican grassroots and went into the prisons where they met Republican POWs.

You only die once.You live everyday.I first met Martin McGuinness shortly before he & I travelled to London in 1972 as part of a delegation to negotiate with the British govt. Martin would have been seventy on the 23 of May. He lived a very full life & he lived it well. We kick off the interview by speaking about Dundalk, a town close to the Northern Irish border and how lucky Aidan is to have not taken the accent, nor that one of close rivals Drogheda. In Ireland the areas around the border are known lovingly as "Bandit country" so we spoke about that and the death of Martin McGuinness, former IRA leader and Sinn Fein politician. Aidan teachers English as a foreign language so we speak about that and the commonalities between teaching and stand-up comedy. We speak then about what he likes about the job and how he got into it. We speak about how and why Aidan got into comedy and he tells a brilliant story about his first gig. We talk then about how Aidan used to be a bit nervous before his first few gigs and it led us on to something interesting; Aidan tells me that he's not the kind of comedian that can tell the same joke twice, always trying to improve on them from set to set. A few weeks ago, I met Aidan while recording in Dublin and saw his set, he speaks about having a new joke in it and how 'it seemed to scare a few people'. We speak then about Aidan's comedic influences growing up and the comedy shows he used to watch on tele. Aidan tells me that while gigging over St Patrick's weekend he reveals to his audience a little-known fact about St Patrick; he was a giant racist. And finally then we get talking then about JuiceBox Comedy, Dundalk's comedy club in The Spirit Store and Aidan's role in running it.

The Tory party was in crisis over the election expenses scandal after it was fined a record £70,000 for breaking the rules and its former treasurer was reported to the police. The Electoral Commission said the party had failed to record correctly a total of £275,813 at the 2015 general election and three by-elections in 2014. Sparkbrook has become synonymous with Islamic extremism; one in ten of all Britain's convicted Islamic terrorists, we now know, have come from Sparkbrook and four adjoining council wards. The BBC has been blasted for not cutting off a paedophile who rang in a phone-in to say how his eight year old daughters enjoyed being raped by him. This week, ITV’s late-night car-crash of a programme, The Nightly Show, hit a new low when its ratings slumped below a million. For the 10pm slot, it’s an embarrassing figure. Mind you, with potty-mouthed Davina McCall in the chair — following comedians David Walliams’ and John Bishop’s less than glorious turns at hosting — is anyone surprised? The Nightly Show is a pathetic creation: puerile, witless and embarrassing to watch. The presenters try their hardest, in a desperate sort of way, but what happened to the script? Where are the jokes?

Regulation is one way tackle so-called vulture funds, says Sinn Féin finance spokesperson Pearse Doherty, but it is not clear whether there is a will at government level to introduce it.The Donegal TD told this week's Inside Business podcast that he believes the government still wants to use these funds to “clean up the carcasses” of the commercial property sector.Deputy Doherty was speaking after last night's RTÉ documentary, The Great Irish Sell Off, which reported that giant US investment funds paid miniscule amounts of tax despite making enormous profits on their Irish investments.Irish Times markets correspondent Joe Brennan has reported widely on these funds, and spoke to the podcast about the main players in the market, the assets and loans that they have acquired and the structures they have used to pay very little tax.One of those investment funds, Cerberus, hit the headlines over its controversial purchase of NAMA's Project Eagle portfolio. Barry O'Halloran took us through the details of that and he also raised questions about whether the government may have accidentally done the wrong thing by closing the Section 110 loophole.Also on the podcast, Pearse Doherty spoke about the resignation of Martin McGuinness as Deputy First Minister of Northern Ireland. Sinn Féin were left with “no choice” he said, after talks between McGuinness and the DUP First Minister Arlene Foster came to naught. At the launch of the 'Atlas of Donegal' on Saturday, Martin McGuinness told the audience about the power of Heaney's words literally bringing opposite sides together. He recalled giving Ian Paisley a hand-written Heaney poem as a retirement present and his subsequent surprise at seeing it on the wall when visiting Paisley's office some months later. It's a simple anecdote, but it shows how the late poet and his words managed to be a great leveller. Apologies for the sound quality – I was down the back of the hall, but the good news is the poem itself is gloriously recited in stereo by Liam Neeson at the end. The map shows the location of Bellaghy Bawn, which was opened to the public in 1996. The centre has resources on site including a film made for the bawn as well as a collection of Heaney's broadcasts and poetry. Bellaghy lies in the heart of the County Derry countryside where Heaney grew up on a farm in Mossbawn, a place his wife Marie says holds the key to her husband. "It's his paradise, his Eden, all he's ever wanted to do is go back."
