New Study: Retirees with Annuities Spend MORE than Those Who Rely on Investments Alone

The Power Of Zero Show

David McKnight looks at a recent study on retirees that seems to tell a different story compared to what many people in the U.S. tend to believe.  Americans often view guaranteed lifetime income annuities skeptically – they're perceived as a drag on the growth of their stock market portfolio. According to the study by retirement researchers David Blanchett and Michael Finke, retirees with guaranteed lifetime income spend about twice as much as their counterparts who rely on stocks and bonds alone for income in retirement. Those who rely purely on investments alone in retirement end up spending less because they fear running out of money in advance of life expectancy. David explains that “retirees with annuities spend more, not because they are wealthier, but because they have a form of wealth – a guaranteed income – that encourages them to spend.” Comparing two couples, a risk-averse couple with a risk-tolerant couple, Blanchett and Finke's study found a 1.1% difference in them taking an annual withdrawal rate from their portfolio. David couldn't have been any clearer: “If you want to spend more in retirement, taking an investment-only approach is usually the worst way of going about it.”     Mentioned in this episode: David's upcoming book: The Guru Gap: How America's Financial Gurus Are Leading You Astray, and How to Get Back on Track David's books: Power of Zero, Look Before You LIRP, The Volatility Shield, Tax-Free Income for Life and The Infinity Code DavidMcKnight.com DavidMcKnightBooks.com PowerOfZero.com (free 3-part video series) @mcknightandco on Twitter  @davidcmcknight on Instagram David McKnight on YouTube Get David's Tax-free Tool Kit at taxfreetoolkit.com David Blanchett Michael Finke

The ‘Rumours' are true... screen superstar Cate Blanchett and director Guy Maddin are joining Simon this week to give us the gossip on their surreal new satire—once they've finished fangirling over the music of Sparks, that is. Following decades of avant garde work that's made him one of Canada's most celebrated filmmakers, ‘Rumours' is the biggest movie to date from the Winnipeg weirdo—its star-studded cast featuring Charles Dance and Alicia Vikander alongside Blanchett. Set at a G7 summit called to address an ‘unnamed-crisis', it follows the hapless world leaders as they are beleaguered by bronze-age bog bodies come to life in some sort of apocalypse situation. There's also a giant brain. It's as odd as it sounds. Mark reviews this bizarre object of a film, along with ‘Merchant Ivory', a documentary deep dive on the filmmakers responsible for all those most quintessentially British of period dramas from ‘Room With A View' to ‘The Remains of the Day'—and ‘Nightbitch', Marielle Heller's dark comedy where Amy Adams plays a new mother at her wits end who transforms into a dog. Fattar man idiotbeslut kan man inte kosta på sig att stå för dem. Hur är det med hets mot folkgrupp: bra med skärpning, eller en tveksam idé från början? Vi enas om att vara oense. Och så alla tips på bra musikfilmer: Commitments, Dig!, The Heart is a Drum, Stop Making Sense, Made of Stone, I'm not There och så vidare. Johan bidrar också: CBGB:s, The Last Waltz, Quadrophenia, Control och 24 hour party people. The ensemble cast also features Kevin Hart, Jack Black, Édgar Ramírez, Ariana Greenblatt, Florian Munteanu, Gina Gershon and Jamie Lee Curtis. The film was announced in August 2015, with Lionsgate Films developing it with Ari and Avi Arad producing, and Leigh Whannell in talks to direct. Casting took place from May 2020 to April 2021, with Blanchett cast first and others the following year. Principal photography began in April 2021 in Budapest, Hungary, during the COVID-19 pandemic, and wrapped in June. Two weeks of reshoots took place in early 2023, directed by Tim Miller due to Roth's commitments to Thanksgiving (2023). That June, Mazin removed his name from the project and was replaced by Joe Crombie.Borderlands premiered at the TCL Chinese Theatre in Los Angeles on August 6, 2024, and was released in the United States by Lionsgate on August 9. For over twenty-five years, Cate Blanchett has been as vital as any performer we have. In the lead-up to this Sunday's 96th annual Academy Awards, we're returning to our special talk with Cate. To begin, we unpack her femme fatale turn in Nightmare Alley (6:06), the way director Guillermo del Toro wrestles with truth and deception in the neo-noir (9:34), the first time Blanchett understood her gift for shapeshifting (11:18), the lasting presence of her late father (14:46), an early job as a script reader that changed how she approached her craft (19:14), the challenge of getting comfortable with “being seen” (22:40), a prophetic encounter with a psychic while filming The Gift (25:46), and how becoming a parent clarified her purpose (31:58). On the back-half, we sit her work in I'm Not There (34:52) and Manifesto (38:54), her affinity for the Eastern philosophy of imperfection (42:33), words of wisdom from dancer Martha Graham (48:00), and how she's beginning to accept the “divine dissatisfaction” of being an artist (51:54). Michelle Williams - The Fabelmans - In 2023 Michelle Yeoh became the second woman of colour in the 95 year history of the Oscars to win Best Actress in a Leading Role for the critical smash hit, Everything Everywhere All at Once. This was one of the most exciting Best Actress Oscar races in recent memory. In my opinion it really came down to Yeoh, Blanchett, and Riseborough (the dark horse nominee of the century). I think a lot of people were expecting Riseborough to be the upset since her nomination shocked everyone, including the Academy, and called for a recount and investigation, which turned out to be above board. Blanchett as Tár is arguably one of Blanchett's greatest performances on screen. Yeoh was utilizing all her skills in this powerhouse performance in EEAAO. It was a real nail biter! I think the correct winner was Yeoh however when it comes down to personal taste, I have my opinions. I'm sorry to say I don't think Williams or de Armas had a real shot at this trophy. Not this year. Who do you think should have won? Join host Kyle Brownrigg with guest host Cathryn Nailer as they discuss.

On episode 4 of the Director Watch Podcast, they are joined by Kevin Jacobsen, Entertainment Weekly Content Update Editor and host of the And the Runner Up Is podcast, to discuss the latest film in their Todd Haynes series, Carol (2015). After making I'm Not There, Haynes stepped away from feature films for a lengthy eight years to focus on other projects, most notably the 2011 Mildred Pierce mini-series for HBO. But in 2015, Haynes returned to the big screen with a dazzling, romantic period drama that is considered to be one of the best films of the last decade, Carol. Working off a script written by Phyllis Nagy adapted from Patricia Highsmith's groundbreaking novel, the film follows two women, a young inspiring photographer (Rooney Mara) and an older housewife (Cate Blanchett) going through a divorce, who begin a forbidden affair that forms into a beautiful, heartbreaking love story over the course of the film. On this episode, Ryan, Jay, and Kevin dive into these two fascinating performances by Mara and Blanchett, Nagy's perfect screenplay, the expert work by everyone in the crafts departments, why the film was nominated for Best Picture, and most importantly, Haynes's evolution as a director as a filmmaker who specializes in making memorable period pieces. "Tár" is a film driven by paranoia from the titular character. I liked the theme about being the talk of the town to almost a half-recognized talent. And all of it is due to allegations to where we see this character scramble for some type of security. In her world, there isn't any. People in her field of work and expertise all play a role where they all back stab each other. I dug "Tár" for it's unique screenplay of a pretentious Lydia Tar trying to make delusional sense of what's crumbling around in her life. I also like how the sound design play a large in the mood of the scenes as they slowly creep up on us for a suspenseful experience because as we watch the film unveil itself we wonder exactly where these events are taking. It's almost feels like we're watching a windowed life of characters that some of us will never experience when it comes to classical music and its experience that it gives to those who ask for it. I discuss how well the characters play into each other's lives.I give this film four out of four tokes.

Disclaimer: SPOILERS!! Juan, Marc, and Kevin sync up and get in tune to review the 2022 film "Tár", directed by Todd Field and starring Cate Blanchett. Lydia Tár (Blanchett) is one of the most famous classical music conductors/maestros in the world, who is also at the top of her game. She keeps a busy, jet-setting schedule and balances a lot of plates. She also has an inclination for control, domination, power, and playing people like the symphonies she so famously conducts. Among its nominees are Todd Field (In the Bedroom, Little Children) for both writing and directing, along with two-time Oscar winner Cate Blanchett for Best Actress for her memorable performance as the eponymous Lydia Tar.  Tar is a renowned American composer/conductor leading an orchestra in Berlin - she's a worldwide celebrity with an impeccable reputation as a musical genius.  But her life soon becomes engulfed in both scandal and a looming sense of danger.....and we follow her on this admittedly wild ride!  The film also stars Noemie Merlant and Nina Hoss - let's see if it lives up to the hype.  Host: Geoff Gershon Editors: Geoff and Ella GershonProducer: Marlene Gershonhttps://livingforthecinema.com/Facebook:https://www.facebook.com/Living-for-the-Cinema-Podcast-101167838847578Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/livingforthecinema/Letterboxd:https://letterboxd.com/Living4Cinema/
