When the Mishkan was inaugurated on Rosh Chodesh Nissan, all twelve Nesi'im united in one offering of “six covered wagons and twelve cattle”; only afterward did each Nasi bring his individual offering on his designated day. The lesson is that on Rosh Chodesh Nissan every Jew is empowered to unite with the entire Jewish people, and together as one to take part in erecting the Mishkan etc. (2) One should increase in studying the Halachos of Pesach. As the Arizal states, even the slightest amount of chametz on Pesach affects one's conduct for the entire year; therefore, one will surely spare no effort to avoid chametz, by studying the relevant halachos etc.2 excerpts from sichos of Rosh Chodesh Nissan 5742 For a transcript in English of the Sicha: https://thedailysicha.com/?date=30-03-2025

Lake Garda, Italy's largest and most picturesque lake, is not just a scenic marvel but also a hub of exceptional wines. Thanks to its unique microclimate and diverse soil composition, this region produces some of Italy's most distinctive and celebrated wines. From refreshing whites to complex reds, Lake Garda's wines offer something for every palate. One of the best ways to visit the enormous Lake Garda and its wineries is to ferry hop from one lakeside town to another. Nestled on the western shores of Lake Garda, the Valtènesi wine region is an enchanting destination for wine lovers looking to discover something truly special. This area, with its stunning landscapes and rich winemaking history, remains relatively unknown outside of Italy, but that is changing—thanks to ambitious winemakers like the dynamic duo behind Conti Thun Winery. This is a re-release of a 2021 episode that digs even deeper into the Valtènesi and Lake Garda wines.

Shabbat Zachor: Remembering Amalek with Reverence and Responsibility

Daily Halacha Podcast - Daily Halacha By Rabbi Eli J. Mansour

On "Shabbat Zachor," the Shabbat before Purim, we take two Torah scrolls from the Heichal. After reading the regular Torah portion from the first Torah, we open the second scroll and read for the Maftir reading the final verses of Parashat Ki-Teitzei (Devarim 25:17-19) which command us to recount Amalek's attack on Benei Yisrael. According to many Halachic authorities, including the Shulchan Aruch, the annual reading of these verses constitutes a Torah obligation. The Zachor reading differs in this regard from the standard Torah reading, in that it is a Torah obligation. In light of the unique status of the Zachor reading, is it proper for the congregation to read along with the Ba'al Koreh (reader) from their Chumashim as he reads Zachor? Although some Rabbis indeed encouraged reading Zachor along with the Ba'al Koreh, Chacham Ovadia Yosef, in his work Chazon Ovadia (Laws of Purim, p. 4), rules that to the contrary, this practice is inappropriate. Firstly, he notes that the Torah introduces the obligation to recall Amalek's assault with the term "Zachor" (literally, "Remember") – the same term with which the Torah introduces the obligation of Kiddush on Shabbat (Shemot 20:8). The Sages understood the word "Zachor" as a reference to verbal recitation, thus requiring that one verbally declare the sanctity of Shabbat every Shabbat, and verbally recall the incident of Amalek once a year. As we know, one can fulfill his obligation of Kiddush by listening to its recitation from somebody else. The Halachic principle of "Shomei'a Ke'oneh" establishes that by carefully listening to somebody else's recitation, one is considered to have personally recited the given text. Therefore, one is not required to personally recite Kiddush on Shabbat, and it suffices for him to listen to its recitation by another person. Similarly, the obligation to read the Zachor section can be fulfilled by listening to the reader, and there is thus no need for the congregation to read the verses of Zachor along with the Ba'al Koreh, as they satisfy their obligation by carefully listening to his reading. Furthermore, Chacham Ovadia adds, the Zachor obligation requires reading this section from a proper Torah scroll. Therefore, the congregation can fulfill their obligation only by listening to the Ba'al Koreh's reading, whereby they are considered to have themselves read the Zachor section from a Torah scroll. If they read from their Chumashim, then they do not fulfill their obligation. It is therefore appropriate for the congregation to remain perfectly silent during the Zachor reading and carefully listen to each word read by the Ba'al Koreh. There is some discussion among the Halachic authorities as to whether or not women are included in the obligation to hear the Zachor reading, and therefore many women indeed make a point to come to the synagogue on Shabbat Zachor to hear this reading. Many communities conduct a special Zachor reading on the afternoon of Shabbat Zachor for women who are unable to attend synagogue services in the morning. Some Rabbis discouraged this practice, arguing that it is inappropriate to take the Torah scroll from the Heichal for this reading, since no Beracha is recited over this reading and it is unclear whether or not it is in fact required. Chacham Ovadia Yosef, however (In Chazon Ovadia – Laws of Purim, p. 10), encourages this practice, claiming that reading the Zachor section for women is indeed a worthy enough purpose to warrant removing the Torah from the Heichal. He draws proof to his position from the practice of Rabbi Moshe Greenwald (early 20th-century author of the "Arugat Ha'bosem") to remove the Torah from the Heichal each morning during the first twelve days of Nissan and read from the section of the "Nesi'im" in the Book of Bamidbar (7:1-8:4). Even though reading from the "Nesi'im" section during this period is not required by Halacha, and is merely a Minhag (custom), this practice is deemed worthwhile enough to allow removing the Torah from the Heichal. Certainly, then, it is proper to conduct a special Zachor reading for women in deference to the view among the authorities that the Zachor obligation applies to both men and women. Why is no Beracha recited over the Mitzva of reading Zachor? Many Mitzvot that we perform require the recitation of a Beracha. Seemingly, then, before the Zachor reading we should recite the Beracha "Asher Kideshanu Be'mitzvotav Ve'tzivanu Li'zkor Ma'aseh Amalek." Why did the Rabbis not require the recitation of a Beracha before the performance of this Mitzva? Chacham Ovadia (Chazon Ovadia – Laws of Purim, p. 11) cites those who answer this question on the basis of the Gemara's comment in Masechet Megila (10b) that the Almighty does not rejoice in the destruction of the wicked. Although the wicked people in the world must be eliminated, their death should not be a cause of joy and celebration. Thus, for example, when the ministering angels wished to sing a song of praise upon the drowning of the Egyptians in the sea, God exclaimed, "My creatures are drowning at sea – and you wish to sing a song of praise?!" Therefore, even though we must conduct a special reading to recall the obligation to destroy Amalek, the Sages chose not to require the recitation of a Beracha, which would express a feeling of joy and excitement over the destruction of the wicked. Summary: On the Shabbat before Purim we read for the Maftir reading the section of "Zachor" from a separate Torah scroll. The congregation should remain silent during the reading, rather than read along with the Ba'al Koreh (reader). Some authorities require women to hear this reading, as well. Many communities therefore conduct a special Zachor reading during the afternoon of Shabbat Zachor for women who cannot attend the morning services, and this is a proper practice.

ג' חלקים משיחת ט"ו אלול ה'תנש"א ל"הנחה פרטית" או התרגום ללה"ק של השיחה: https://thedailysicha.com/?date=18-09-2024 Synopsis We know that Tomchei Temimim was established upon the suggestion of my father-in-law the Rebbe to his father, even though his father was the Nasi at the time, and there is only one Nasi at a time, especially in Chabad, and “Chabad” (embodied in the establishment of the yeshiva) involves Chochmah, Binah and Daas. The yeshiva was founded on 15 Elul, the third day from 13 Elul, the wedding anniversary of my father-in-law, the Rebbe; the verse states “…on the third day He will set us up, and we will live before Him,” and this is achieved by the founding of Tomchei Temimim, whose students' role is to be “shining lights,” such that those whom they influence also become shining lights themselves. In other words: every one of them should make his four cubits and his personal home resemble Tomchei Temimim. Since every Nasi is the successor of the Nasi before him, it emerges that in our generation we have the revelation of all eight generations of Nesi'im, and we receive Torah teachings from them all, like the well-known story about the seven teachings heard from the Baal Shem Tov in Gan Eden. When every one of us learns and repeats the words of Torah said in Gan Eden, which causes “his lips to move” in Gan Eden – this is akin to “seeing your World in your lifetime” in this physical world.3 excerpts from sichah of 15 Elul 5751 For a transcript in English of the Sicha: https://thedailysicha.com/?date=18-09-2024 לע”נ מרת חי' איידל בת ר' אברהם דוד ע"ה לעבאוויטש ליום היארצייט שלה ט"ו אלול. ת.נ.צ.ב.ה.

The Rich Zeoli Show- Full Episode (07/29/2024): 3:05pm- Venezuela autocrat Nicolas Maduro has been “elected” to his third consecutive six-year term as president. According to reports, Maduro won 51% of the final vote though there were, unsurprisingly, numerous irregularities which have led many to question the legitimacy of the results. Notably, the Biden-Harris administration limited sanctions on Venezuela and the Maduro regime in exchange for fair elections. It certainly doesn't seem like policy worked. 3:10pm- Kamala Harris' Prosecutorial Failures: In 2019, Vice news wrote “Jamal Trulove...was wrongfully convicted of murder and sentenced to 50 years to life in prison, despite no physical evidence linking him to the crime. Trulove recalls then San Francisco District Attorney Kamala Harris ‘showed up at the two most pivotal times…she wanted to be present for a celebration of a conviction.' He was eventually exonerated and freed after over six years in prison, and won $13.1 million from the city of San Francisco.” You can read more here: https://www.vice.com/en/article/3azy98/kamala-harriss-office-sent-this-innocent-man-to-prison-now-hes-voting-for-her 3:15pm- While appearing on Fox News with Trey Gowdy, former Democrat Presidential candidate Tulsi Gabbard explained that Kamala Harris is more dangerous than Joe Biden—because she is an “ideologue.” 3:20pm- Packing the Supreme Court: In a newly recirculated clip, Kamala Harris says she is open to expanding the size of the Supreme Court. 3:30pm- Democrats have unveiled a new line of attack to hammer Republican Vice Presidential candidate JD Vance—“he's weird!” Governor JB Pritzker (D-IL), Governor Gretchen Whitmer (D-MI), Congressman Eric Swalwell (D-CA), and Congresswoman Barbara Lee (D-CA) all echoed the same criticism of Vance while appearing on television over the weekend. 3:45pm- Tommy Pigott—Strategic Communications Director for the Republican National Committee—joins The Rich Zeoli Show to discuss Kamala Harris' past pledge to ban fracking. How will that impact her campaign in Pennsylvania specifically? Plus, a new Washington Post story warns that it could take days for Pennsylvania to declare a winner in the presidential race. 3:55pm- Secret Service Security Failures: Haley Willis, Aric Toler, David A. Fahrenthold, and Adam Goldman write: “Nearly 100 minutes before former President Donald J. Trump took the stage in Butler, Pa., a local countersniper who was part of the broader security detail let his colleagues know his shift was ending. ‘Guys I am out. Be safe,' he texted to a group of colleagues at 4:19 p.m. on July 13. He exited the second floor of a warehouse that overlooked the campaign rally site, leaving two other countersnipers behind. Outside, the officer noticed a young man with long stringy hair sitting on a picnic table near the warehouse. So at 4:26 p.m., he texted his colleagues about the man, who was outside the fenced area of the Butler Fair Show grounds where Mr. Trump was to appear. He said that the person would have seen him come out with his rifle and ‘knows you guys are up there.' The countersniper who sent the texts confirmed to The New York Times that the individual he saw was later identified as the gunman.” You can read the full article here: https://www.nytimes.com/2024/07/28/us/politics/trump-shooting-thomas-crooks-secret-service.html 4:05pm- Google Autocomplete Erases Trump Assassination Attempt: Chris Nesi of The New York Post writes: “A key Google feature is failing to show results for the attempted assassination of Donald Trump—drawing claims from the former president's son that Big Tech companies are trying to influence the election. Rich notes that if Democrats feel as though Harris is incapable of defeating Trump, they won't hesitate to replace her as their candidate. Currently, Harris appears to be polling slightly better than Biden had been—though, Trump still leads in most swing states as well as nationally. 5:10pm- Karens for Kamala! According to Reuters, more than 160,000 people joined a “white women for Kamala Harris” Zoom call. Independent journalist Michael Shellenberger notes, “I thought this was a joke at first but it's not: Kamala Harris' campaign is segregating its volunteers by race. While speaking on behalf of Kamala Harris' presidential campaign, Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro alleged Donald Trump intends to “use the department of justice to attack people who don't think like him.” He also inaccurately claimed Donald Trump wants to confiscate tips from waiters and waitresses, despite Trump's campaign pledge to end taxes on tips. It sounds like Shapiro desperately wants to be selected as Harris' running mate. 5:40pm- J.D. Tuccille of Reason writes: “Imagine you're a prominent ‘disinformation expert' once hired to head a government board to fight alleged untruths but unceremoniously dumped from the position when the board was dissolved amidst public outcry. Smeared oh so cruelly as the would-be chief censor of a government body tasked with policing people's speech, you sue your critics for defamation to set the record straight. Guest Kari L. Jordan Panelist Richard Littauer Show Notes In this episode of Sustain, host Richard welcomes guest Dr. Kari L. Jordan, the Executive Director of The Carpentries, to discuss the organization's mission, challenges, and strategies for fostering an inclusive community that teaches data and coding skills. We explore topics like sustaining open source projects, the importance of teaching open source tools and practices, and how The Carpentries contribute to the ecosystem. The conversation dives into the funding strategies, volunteer engagement, accessibility, and the future goals of The Carpentries, including spreading skills in data science and coding across diverse linguistic and geographical communities. Also, we'll touch on broader issues such as equity in tech and the potential avenues for increasing participation of underrepresented groups in open source and data science. Press download to hear more! [00:02:03] Richard asks Kari about The Carpentries work, and she gives her elevator pitch, emphasizing their mission of teaching inclusive data and coding skills. [00:03:23] Kari discusses how The Carpentries incorporates open source principles in teaching various aspects, including community management and code of conduct. Also, she outlines the adjacent communities to The Carpentries, mentioning rOpenSci and the Center for Scientific Collaboration and Community Engagement. [00:05:15] Richard jokes about The Carpentries being well-funded, and Kari clarifies their actual funding sources and the crucial role of volunteers. [00:07:15] Kari details how the nine paid staff of The Carpentries structure their work across curricula development, workshops and instruction, and community engagement. [00:08:59] A question comes up about The Carpentries success metrics, and Kari speaks on their goal to build global capacity in essential data skills for informed decision-making. [00:11:56] Discussing the ethical use of data, Kari explains The Carpentries alignment with the FAIR Principles to ensure data management is equitable and accessible. [00:14:47] Kari highlights the importance of recognition and appreciation in open source contributions, and speaks about the diversity in forms of appreciation, from LinkedIn badges to DOIs for contributions, and the necessity of different incentives. [00:17:34] Kari acknowledges the divide and discusses how individuals in The Carpentries often pick a focus, be it teaching or lesson development, though some do cross over between data and open source contributions. [00:19:37] Richard probes into the potential contribution of ‘data people' to the burnout of open source maintainers and whether they should also contribute to the maintenance. Kari agrees on the correlation but suggests it might be a confidence issues and emphasizes the need to educate these individuals on the importance of their contributions. [00:21:12] Richard seeks a clearer definition of what constitutes a contribution within The Carpentries, and Kari responds by referring to their Code of Conduct which clarifies that contributions are welcome as long as they adhere to it. [00:22:45] What is Kari's long-term vision for The Carpentries? She envisions their lessons being taught in hundreds of languages and spreading their educational model without a reliance on strong internet connections and mentions currently having a multilingual open source glossary called Glosario. [00:25:26] Kari talks about the hardest part of her job, which is that volunteer capacity and revenue generation are current organizational priorities. [00:28:29] What would Kari focus on in open source if she wasn't with The Carpentries? She expresses her desire to concentrate efforts on equity and inclusion, specifically increasing the involvement of people of color in open source within the U.S. [00:31:20] Richard asks Kari what she's really excited about for the future of The Carpentries. She shares her enthusiasm about potential strategic alliances with other organizations to share resources and thrive together, and the creation of resources for communities to run their own inclusive events. [00:32:58] Find out where you can follow Kari online. Quotes [00:06:46] “We've supported workshops in over 64 countries, and it's because of our volunteers.” [00:09:31] “We know that decisions that impact our lives are made with data.” [00:10:48] “Before I came on staff at The Carpentries, I had never heard of R, Python. I had never heard of GitHub, and I have a PhD.” [00:16:07] “Appreciation is different depending on what's important to you.” Spotlight [00:33:55] Richard's spotlight is Nisha Ghatak, from NeSI, who ran two of The Carpentries workshops he attended in New Zealand. »

Parashat Teruma- Don't Be Lazy

Anyone who has attended a fundraiser and browsed through the dinner journal knows that the largest donations are always featured first. The journal begins with the special full-page ads, and ends with the small quarter-page ads and smaller ads which cost much less. In Parashat Teruma, it seems, a different policy was used. The Parasha begins with Hashem listing the eleven materials that Beneh Yisrael needed to donate toward the construction of the Mishkan. As we would expect, this list begins with the precious metals – gold, silver and copper, in that order. But by the time we reach the end of the list, we find something surprising. The most expensive materials which were donated are mentioned last. These were the “Abneh Miluim” and “Abneh Shoham” – precious stones which were affixed to the special garments worn by the Kohen Gadol. These were far more expensive even than the gold, and yet, they appear last in this list of materials (25:7). This question was addressed by the Or Ha'haim (Rav Haim Ben-Attar, 1696-1743), who offered several different answers. One of his answers is based on the Midrash's discussion of these precious stones which were donated for the garments of the Kohen Gadol. Later, in Parashat Vayakhel (35:27), the Torah tells that these stones were donated by the Nesi'im, the leaders of the tribes. The Midrash explains that the Nesi'im did not think that the people would donate everything needed for the Mishkan, and so they decided to wait and see what would still be missing after the people brought all their contributions. They would then bring whatever was still needed. As it turned out, the people donated so many materials that Moshe needed to tell them to stop donating (36:6). All that remained were the precious stones, and so this is what the Nesi'im donated. Upon reading this account, we would, at first glance, feel great respect and admiration for the Nesi'im. They essentially “underwrote” this project, promising to donate everything that was lacking after the rest of the nation brought their donations, and they ended up bringing the most expensive items – the precious stones. Surprisingly, though, the Midrash is critical of the Nesi'im for delaying their contribution, donating only at the very end, after everyone else brought their donations. The Midrash comments that because the Nesi'im delayed, and brought their donation only at the end, the word “Nesi'im” is written in this verse (35:27) without the letter “Yod,” indicating that their contribution was deficient. For the same reason, the Or Ha'haim writes, the Torah mentions this donation last in its list of materials needed for the Mishkan. Although these stones were the most valuable of all the materials, nevertheless, since this donation was tainted, they are placed at the end of the list. We must understand, what could possibly be wrong with the Nesi'im's decision? They generously volunteered to donate whatever was needed, and brought the most precious materials. Why did the Sages find this improper? The Rabbis of the Mussar movement explained that the Nesi'im's decision was, indeed, generally noble, but it was marred by a slight tinge of laziness. G-d determined that the Nesi'im's plan was partially motivated by laziness, by the convenience of delaying their donation. There was nothing inherently wrong with the decision per se, but the motivation stemmed, if only somewhat, from a desire to comfortably wait, rather than rushing to come forward and donate. This insight, then, teaches us of the unique importance of Zerizut – alacrity – in the performance of Misvot, and the gravity of laziness. Even if we do something intrinsically noble – even generously underwriting a project and giving the largest donation! – the action is deficient if it is done with some degree of laziness, without passion and zeal. The Gemara (Berachot 47b) teaches that one should endeavor to be among the first ten people to arrive in the synagogue for the Shaharit prayer in the morning. No matter how many people arrive after the first ten, the Gemara states, each of the first ten receive rewards equal to them all. The work Ateret Zekenim mentions a custom practiced by some especially pious individuals to observe a fast on a day when they failed to be among the first ten in the synagogue. It is important not only to come to the synagogue and pray with concentration and feeling, but also to come with Zerizut, without delay, promptly, showing our enthusiasm and passion for the Misva. We all, thank G-d, are involved in “building” a “Mishkan” throughout our lives. We all perform many Misvot, and are involved in many wonderful projects, and we should take pride in the beautiful “sanctuaries” that we are privileged to build. The Or Ha'haim's comments remind us, however, that we must approach every Misva we perform with alacrity and zeal, rushing immediately to seize every opportunity that comes our way, thus showing Hashem – and our children – how much we value and cherish the Misvot, such that we do not want to delay any Misva for even a single moment.

Daily Halacha Podcast - Daily Halacha By Rabbi Eli J. Mansour

Starting thirty days before Pesah, one must ensure not to handle Hametz in such a way that it might stick to something and thus be difficult to remove before Pesah. Although one is not required to begin ridding his property of Hametz thirty days before Pesah, it is proper already then to pay attention how Hametz his handled in anticipation of the need to eliminate all Hametz from his property. This is mentioned by the Bah (Rabbi Yoel Sirkis, Poland, 1561-1640) and the Magen Abraham (Rabbi Abraham Gombiner, Poland, 1635-1682), in Siman 436.Likewise, starting from Purim one should avoid bringing books near food, as some small crumbs of Hametz might fall into the book, and this book may then be brought to the table on Pesah. One Rabbi was of the opinion that it is worthwhile to ensure to never bring a book near food at any point during the year, and that one thereby fulfills the Misva of remembering the Exodus. Whenever a person considers bringing a book to the table and refrains from doing so because this book might be brought to the table on Pesah, he remembers the holiday of Pesah and the commemoration of the Exodus, in fulfillment of a Misva. Although this is not required according to the strict Halacha, it is an admirable practice to observe. The Meiri (Rabbi Menahem Meiri, 1249-1310), in his commentary to Masechet Aboda Zara (5), writes that it is proper to begin making preparations for Pesah already thirty days before the holiday. This includes shopping for the materials needed for Pesah and making practical arrangements. It is customary among many to observe the Yom Kippur Katan service on Ereb Rosh Hodesh Nissan, even among those who do not observe Yom Kippur Katan on Ereb Rosh Hodesh throughout the rest of the year. According to one view in the Talmud, the world was created on Rosh Hodesh Nissan (as opposed to the first of Tishri), and thus this day is a kind of "Rosh Hashanah," warranting a process of Teshuba in preparation for this day. Therefore, many have the custom to fast either the entire day or part of the day of Ereb Rosh Hodesh Nissan. There is also a custom to visit cemeteries on this day.Tahanunim and Nefilat Apayim are omitted from the prayer service starting on Rosh Hodesh Nissan. It is customary during the first twelve days of Nissan to read the section of the offerings brought by the Nesi'im (twelve tribal leaders). On each day, the verses referring to the offering brought that day are read. This custom is mentioned by the Shela Ha'kadosh (Rabbi Yeshaya Horowitz, 1565-1630). Some have the practice of conducting this reading from a Sefer Torah, whereas the custom in our community is to read this section from a printed Humash or Siddur. It is customary to begin the reading on the first day of Nissan from the section of Birkat Kohanim, which appears immediately preceding the section of the Nesi'im. On the 13th of Nissan, the custom is to read the opening verses of Parashat Beha'alotecha – until the words "Ken Asa Et Ha'menora" – which correspond to the tribe of Levi. Before the daily reading of the Nesi'im section, one should give some money to charity – or pledge to give some money – in memory of all the souls from that day's tribe in need of a Tikkun (rectification). This practice is mentioned in the work Kav Ha'yashar (chapter 85). Although this custom is not commonly observed, it is a worthwhile practice to follow, as one of the important benefits of this reading is bringing merit to the deceased souls of each day's tribe.
