Aharon felt disappointed that he was not part of the Nesi'im's dedication of the Mishkan, but Hashem reassured him that his role with the Menorah was even greater. The Menorah was unique not only because its western lamp burned miraculously longer than the others, testifying that the Shechinah rested amongst Klal Yisroel, but also because its very creation was miraculous. Fashioned from a single block of gold, it was beyond human ability to produce. Yet Moshe was still required to learn every detail, follow every instruction, and do everything within his power before Hashem completed the Menorah. This teaches a profound lesson in serving Hashem. When something appears achievable, we understand the need to work hard and do our part. But when a challenge seems impossible, we may be tempted to give up before we begin. The Maharal teaches that even miracles require human effort. Our responsibility is to follow Hashem's instructions and do everything humanly possible. When we make that effort, Hashem can bring results far beyond our abilities, just as a beautiful Menorah emerged through a partnership between human dedication and Divine intervention.

Daily Halacha Podcast - Daily Halacha By Rabbi Eli J. Mansour
June 2 second from 2:36 There are many people – including yeshiva students and Talmideh Hachamim – who skip the section of Korbanot, which discusses the sacrifices offered in the Bet Ha'mikdash, and begin with Pesukeh De'zimra, from Hodu or from Baruch She'amar. The Hikreh Leb ( Rav Raphael Yosef Hazan, 1741–1820) considered the possibility that those who devote their days to Torah study are perhaps justified in omitting the Korbanot section. Since they spend their time immersed in Torah learning, they might be excused for saving time by skipping this part of the Shaharit prayer. However, the Hikreh Leb dismisses this possibility, writing that as this is part of the daily prayer schedule, there is no excuse for omitting it. We cannot emphasize enough the importance and value of reading the Korbanot section, whereby we access the atonement and blessings that the sacrifices in the Bet Ha'mikdash bring. This is true of all the Korbanot, but it is especially true of the Ketoret – the section dealing with the incense offering that was brought each day in the Bet Ha'mikdash. The Zohar (Midrash Ha'ne'elam, Parashat Vayera) relates that Eliyahu Ha'nabi once appeared to Rabbi Pinhas, and taught him that the public recitation of the section of the Ketoret has the power to protect against plagues. Rabbi Aha, the Zohar writes, once visited the town of Tarsha, and the residents informed him that a plague had been ravaging the town for seven days, and was increasing in severity. He instructed them to choose the forty most righteous men of the town, and divide them into four groups of ten. Each was to go to a different corner of the town and recite the section of the Ketoret. Afterward, Rabbi Aha urged them to visit those who were on the brink of death, and to read the verses that tell of Aharon ending a plague by offering incense (Bamidbar 17). Sure enough, these patients survived. Elsewhere (Parashat Vayakhel), the Zohar emphasizes the protective powers of the recitation of the Ketoret. It cites Rabbi Shimon Bar Yohai's exclamation that if people recognized just how precious this text is, they would take each word and wear it as a crown on their heads. If one recites the Ketoret with proper concentration, Rabbi Shimon taught, he is spared from punishments both in this world and the next world. The Zohar further teaches that the Ketoret should be recited before the Amida prayer, because it helps clear the pathway to the heavens from the harmful spiritual forces that seek to sabotage one's prayers, ensuring that they reach the heavens. Some explain that the special offerings of the Nesi'im (tribal leaders) which they brought in honor of the consecration of the Mishkan were especially cherished by G-d because they included Ketoret. Moreover, Rabbenu Bahya (Spain, 1255-1340) writes that the moments after the offering of the Ketoret were the most auspicious time for blessings and prayers. This is why the Kohen Gadol would recite a special prayer for the people after offering the Ketoret on Yom Kippur, and why Moshe and Aharon blessed the nation on the day of the Mishkan's inauguration, following the offering of Ketoret. I witnessed the power of the Ketoret recitation firsthand. When my congregation's synagogue was being constructed, we encountered one problem after another. For reasons we do not know, Hashem decided to test us by making the process exceedingly difficult. Nothing was working. We consulted with the great Kabbalist Rav Mordechai Attieh, and he came with ten great scholars. They stood around the construction site and recited the Ketoret. Sure enough, after that point, we were able to move forward and complete the project. The power of the Korbanot section and the rewards offered by its recitation should incentivize all of us to do everything we can to ensure that we read this section each day.
In this Parsha Review Podcast episode on Parshas Nasso — the longest portion in the Torah with 176 verses — Rabbi Aryeh Wolbe explores the profound significance behind the detailed repetition of the identical gifts brought by the leaders (Nesi'im) of each tribe to the Mishkan. Rather than summarizing, the Torah lists every offering individually to teach that even when the external gift is the same, it becomes unique based on the heart, intention, and personal circumstances of the giver. The episode beautifully connects this to core Jewish ideas: every person is completely one-of-a-kind, with their own unique relationship to Hashem, their own way of praying, giving, and serving. Rabbi Wolbe emphasizes that God doesn't want us to be “like everybody else” but to embrace and cultivate our individuality. This message comes right after Shavuot, teaching that true Torah growth happens when we bring our authentic selves — our unique perspective, strengths, and challenges — into our service of Hashem. Rulings and insights from the Lubavitcher Rebbe - Rabbi Chaim Wolosow
Shalom Aleichem. For today, we will do in the middle of Chapter Resh-Kaf, 220. We actually did part of this in the earlier version as we have been doing the Kitzur Shulchan Aruch, but here they added some pieces, so there is also an additional piece which is applicable and timely, because starting with Tuesday that is going to be Rosh Chodesh Nissan. Of course, this Shabbos is Shabbos Mevarchim, so starting with Tuesday we are going to start reading the Nasi. The Nasi refers to when they first built and erected the Mishkan, when the tribes brought their offerings. There were twelve tribes. When we speak of the twelve tribes, we refer to the twelve sons of Yaakov, but we must remember that the tribe of Yosef was divided into two—Menashe and Ephraim. Therefore, when we speak here of the twelve tribes bringing their offerings, it includes Menashe and Ephraim, because the tribe of Levi did not bring an offering at that time together with the others. Each day, starting from Rosh Chodesh Nissan, one of the leaders of the tribes, according to the order described in the pasuk, brought the korban of that day. The Torah records this at the end of Parshas Naso, going through each day: on the first day one tribe with its leader brought its offering, on the second day another, and so on. In fact, each of the korbanos was exactly the same. Since the Mishkan was erected on Rosh Chodesh Nissan, the offerings began on that day. That is why we have the tradition that starting from Rosh Chodesh Nissan, we recite each day's Nasi, reading the portion that describes the offering of that particular tribe. At the end of each section, after reciting the Nasi of the day, we say a special Yehi Ratzon. In this prayer, we ask Hashem that in His great kindness He should shine upon our souls the spiritual lights associated with that tribe. We say, “If I am from that tribe.” For example, on the first day, when the tribe of Yehuda, represented by Nachshon ben Amminadav, brought the korban, we say, “If I am from the tribe of Yehuda,” asking that all the spiritual strengths of that tribe should empower us in Torah and avodas Hashem. The Rebbe, in a sicha in Likkutei Sichos Chelek Lamed-Beis, addresses a difficulty. Out of the twelve prayers, only one would correspond to a person's actual tribe. How, then, can we say “if I am from this tribe” each day, when eleven of those statements would seemingly be incorrect? The answer is that there must be a connection to every tribe. Even if one does not belong directly to a particular tribe, there is still a spiritual connection, and one can receive the spiritual lights associated with it. This is related to the concept of ibbur, that a person can pass through and be connected to levels beyond their own. The Rebbe explains further that when one actually belongs to a given tribe, the connection is revealed and powerful. However, even when one does not belong to that tribe, the statement “if I am from that tribe” is still meaningful, because there is an underlying connection. Moreover, the very act of saying it may help reveal that connection and draw down the spiritual influence of that tribe. This explains why even Kohanim and Leviim, who clearly know their lineage, were instructed by the Rebbe Rashab to recite these prayers. Although they are not from the other tribes, there is still an indirect connection, and therefore they too can draw from those spiritual influences. The Rebbe concludes that the twelve tribes represent twelve distinct pathways in the service of Hashem. By reciting all twelve Nesi'im, one connects to all these paths. On the thirteenth day, although there is no additional tribe, we read the section of the Menorah, corresponding to the tribe of Levi. Aharon, the leader of the tribe of Levi, did not participate in the offerings, and Rashi explains that he felt distressed about this. Hashem responded, “Yours is greater than theirs,” referring to the lighting of the Menorah. Therefore, we include this section on the thirteenth day, completing the cycle of spiritual influence. Through these twelve days and the thirteenth, we encompass all the spiritual energies of the tribes, drawing inspiration and holiness as we prepare for Yom Tov. Additionally, although not mentioned explicitly in this sicha, we know from Shulchan Aruch that we do not say Tachanun during the entire month of Nissan. Since each tribe's offering was like a personal Yom Tov, one might ask why this affects all of Klal Yisrael. The answer is that even though it was one tribe's celebration, it impacted the entire Jewish people, expressing the deep unity of Klal Yisrael—regardless of individual lineage, we are all truly one. Summary The Nesi'im reflect twelve paths in serving Hashem, and through reciting them, every Jew connects to all. Even without direct lineage, a spiritual connection exists. This highlights the unity of Klal Yisrael, where each tribe's light and celebration extend to all. https://www.torahrecordings.com/shulchan_menachem/orach_chayim/220_005
The Rebbe explains why we commemorate the Nesi'im: their offerings established an eternal foundation for all Jewish service. Through reading the Nasi and Yehi Ratzon, every Jew receives spiritual strength from all tribes, impacting Torah study, fear of Hashem, and daily life. https://www.torahrecordings.com/likutei-sichos/032/002_001

Good morning and Chodesh Tov. Today is the first of Nisan, the month of miracles, renewal, and revealed Divine light. In this teaching, we explore the deep meaning of Rosh Chodesh Nisan, the day the Mishkan was finally established and the Shechinah rested among Israel in a revealed way.We look at why the entire month of Nisan is so elevated that we do not say Tachanun, the custom of reciting the section of the Nesi'im during the first twelve days, and the deeper insight brought in Hayom Yom about how even a Kohen or Levi may be connected to another tribe through ibur neshama. The class also continues the Tanya theme that through mitzvot, Torah learning, and prayer, a person draws down the Shechinah not only upon themselves, but upon their portion in the world and ultimately upon all of creation. Torah is not only studied. It is a calling. Through true Torah learning, we call to Hashem and invite Divine light into our lives.A Chodesh Tov teaching on miracles, the Mishkan, the power of mitzvot, and how Torah becomes the way we draw G-d close in truth.
Parshas Vayakhel teaches that true unity is created when people not only gather together but also give of themselves for a shared holy purpose. The missing yud in Nesi'im teaches that even good intentions must not be delayed, and that holiness is built through eager and united action. https://www.torahrecordings.com/classes/by_parsha/002_shemos/010_vayakheil/008

The Torah was specifically given in this world, in order to connect physical matter with Hashem and to imbue the world, which by nature is subject to time, with the quality of eternity, “freedom from the angel of death.” Therefore, the birth of Moshe (whose role is to bring Torah into the world, and thereby bring eternity in the world) “atones for” and nullifies the effect of the “day of death.” This idea that birth nullifies death was seen visibly in the case of Moshe (one of the unique individuals whom the Sages tell us “did not die”) because at the moment of his birth, “the entire house became filled with light” (the light of Torah), showing that his very essence is Torah (eternity). Therefore Moshe inherently “lives and endures” in “his offspring who are alive,” through those ordained one from the other going back to Moshe Rabbeinu and through the Nesi'im in every generation. Accordingly, we can also understand why the miracle of Purim – when “they upheld what they had already accepted” – occurred specifically in the month of Adar, the month of Moshe's birth.Excerpt from sichah of Purim 5719 For a transcript in English of the Sicha: https://thedailysicha.com/?date=24-02-2026 לזכות שניאור זלמן הכהן בן רוזה חנה שי' ליום ההולדת שלו ז' אדר – לשנת ברכה והצלחה, ואריכות ימים ושנים טובותנדבת אביו ר' אברהם הכהן שי'

The Alter Rebbe writes that on a tzaddik's yom hilula, “the work in which he worked” ascends above etc.; citing a verse from the haftorah of Parashas Va'eira, which discusses the transformation of kelipah to holiness, which is the general purpose of the soul's decent into the body in general, and its decent into exile in particular. And this what prepares for the time when “I will also bring you up again,” upon the true and complete Redemption. On this Shabbos we bless the new month with the six expressions, “for gladness and for joy…,” and we conclude with “and let us say Amen,” which confirms it an eternal reality even in this world; therefore, the way to prepare for this is also to decide firmly and resolutely to “never to return to foolishness again.” The path for this service has already been paved by the Nesi'im of the Jewish people, going all the way back to the three Avos – “I appeared to Avraham, etc.”; meaning, as Rashi explains, “to the Avos,” emphasizing that what is relevant to the Exodus from Egypt and the future Redemption is the quality shared equally by Avraham, Yitzchak, and Yaakov – the fact that they are the Avos of every Jew.Excerpt from sichah of Motza'ei Shabbos Parashas Va'eira, 5739 For a transcript in English of the Sicha: https://thedailysicha.com/?date=16-01-2026

Teens are forming emotional bonds — not just online, but with AI companions. In this episode, Dr Justin Coulson talks with Brown University psychologist Dr Jacqueline Nesi, author of Techno Sapiens, about the fast-growing world of AI “friendships” and what they mean for kids’ mental health. They also unpack Jackie’s latest research revealing how often teens check their phones — and how it’s shaping their moods. It’s a must-listen for parents navigating the blurred lines between connection, distraction, and dependence in the digital age. KEY POINTS 72% of teens have used an AI companion; over half use one regularly. AI chatbots are designed to keep kids engaged — often prioritising screen time over wellbeing. For some vulnerable kids, AI chats can feel like friendship or therapy — but they aren’t replacements for real connection. Australia’s new social-media age-limit laws may help, but implementation and design flaws remain. Teens check their phones an average of 112 times a day — once every 10 minutes! At the end of this week's Parashat Naso , the Torah goes into great detail describing the donations brought by the Nesi'im to inaugurate the Mishkan. Remarkably, each Nasi brought the exact same offering, yet the Torah repeats the full list of items again and again—spanning about 56 pesukim . Why such repetition? The Torah is teaching us a profound lesson: Hashem treasures the efforts of every individual . Even when people perform a mitzvah as part of a group, Hashem values the actions of each person separately. In a shul, there might be hundreds of people reciting the same words, but to Hashem, every word uttered by each person is uniquely precious. There is no such thing as Hashem getting "bored" of repetition. He cherishes everything we say and everything we do—every tefillah, every act of kindness, every mitzvah. The same applies when we experience His presence in our lives. Even when similar moments of hashgachah peratit repeat, each one feels new and meaningful. We're often moved by others' stories of hashgachah , and they awaken in us a desire to see Hashem's hand in our own lives too. Sometimes, we think: Those stories are inspiring, but they never happen to me. Yet we are encouraged to always hope and pray that they do. About a month ago, a story circulated about a chatan who wished to feel his late father's presence at his wedding. Miraculously, around that time, someone from Israel arrived in New York with a letter that the chatan's father had written decades earlier. Through an incredible sequence of events, the letter ended up in the hands of this chatan —dated with the exact date of his wedding. The letter, addressed to a chatan on his wedding day, was written by his father years earlier on that very same Hebrew date. The message felt as though it had come directly from his father, offering blessings from shamayim . This story was shared at a siyyum on Masechet Bava Metzia . In the crowd sat a man named *Yaakov. Hearing the story, he silently wished that he too could receive something from his late father, who had passed away over 20 years ago. The very next day, as Yaakov opened his mail, he noticed an envelope that looked like another routine request. But inside, to his astonishment, was a handwritten letter—written by his father 50 years earlier to a close friend. That friend had just discovered the letter while cleaning for Pesach and thought it would be meaningful to send it to the son of his old friend. Yaakov was overwhelmed. He couldn't stop reading the letter. As he reached the bottom, he noticed a few words written in the opposite direction—a postscript from his father asking his friend where he was up to in Masechet Bava Metzia . Yaakov was stunned. He had just returned from a siyyum on Bava Metzia , where he had wished for a message from his father. Still in disbelief, Yaakov went to his sefarim shelf and opened his Gemara Bava Metzia . Inside was a sticky note marking that he still had to complete pages 50 through 54. It was as if his father was reminding him: Your siyyum isn't complete yet—finish it properly. In that moment, he felt a powerful connection, a personal hashgachah that touched his soul. Yes, the stories we hear really can happen to us. Hashem treasures everything we do, and we are uplifted when we recognize His presence in our lives. May we always feel close to Hashem. May we always sense His guidance. And may we continue to be inspired by the miracles—big and small—that surround us every day. Shabbat Shalom.
The Torah in Parashat Naso tells of the special gifts and sacrifices brought by the Nesi'im – the leaders of the tribes – in honor of the inauguration of the Mishkan. To celebrate this event, the Nesi'im donated wagons to be used by the Leviyim to transport the Mishkan during travel, and then each tribal leader offered a series of sacrifices one day. Each day for twelve days, a different Nasi brought these sacrifices. The Torah introduces this account with the words, "Va'yehi Be'yom Moshe Kalot Moshe Le'hakim Et Ha'Mishkan" – "It was on the day when Moshe finished erecting the Mishkan…" (7:1). Rashi observes that the word "Kalot" resembles the word "Kalla" – "bride." This allusion, Rashi explains, indicates to us that on this day, the day when the Mishkan was completed and began functioning, Beneh Yisrael were like a bride entering under the wedding canopy with her groom. This was the day of Beneh Yisrael's "wedding" with G-d. Rashi's comments must be reconciled with the well-established tradition viewing Ma'amad Har Sinai – G-d's revelation to our ancestors at Mount Sinai – as our nation's "wedding" with the Almighty. Indeed, several customs we observe at weddings commemorate aspects of Ma'amad Har Sinai. For example, we adorn the Hupa with flowers, just as Mount Sinai grew beautiful flowers at the time of the Revelation. And it is customary for the groom to leave the Hupa and walk toward the bride to greet her as she makes her way to the Hupa, as G-d is described as coming from Mount Sinai to greet the people as they made their way from the camp to the foot of the mountain ("Hashem Mi'Sinai Ba" – Debarim 33:2). If our "wedding" with the Almighty occurred on Shabuot, the day of Matan Torah, then how can Rashi speak of the day of the Mishkan's inauguration – which happened nearly ten months later – as the "wedding day"? The answer lies in the tragic event that transpired in between Matan Torah and the inauguration of the Mishkan – the sin of the golden calf. We might say that the day of Matan Torah marked the first stage of the wedding process – what we call "Kiddushin" (betrothal). This is the stage when the groom gives the bride a ring and designates her as his wife. The marriage is completed with the stage of "Nisu'in," when the bride and groom go into private for the first time. The "Nisu'in" between Beneh Yisrael and Hashem was to occur forty days after Ma'amad Har Sinai, on the 17 th of Tammuz, when Moshe came down the mountain with the two tablets. This day was to have marked the completion of the "wedding," whereby our nation was fully "married" to the Almighty. In the interim, however, Beneh Yisrael had betrayed G-d – like a bride who was unfaithful to her groom – by worshipping a foreign deity. Under such circumstances, of course, the "wedding" could not continue. Beneh Yisrael needed to repair the relationship through repentance and through the building of the Mishkan. Once the Mishkan was completed, the "wedding" could now be resumed. Therefore, Rashi writes that on the day of the Mishkan's inauguration, Beneh Yisrael resembled a bride going into the Hupa – because this day marked the renewed "wedding" which had been discontinued as a result of the sin of the golden calf. Not coincidentally, Parashat Naso is almost always read shortly after the celebration of Shabuot, the day which celebrates the beginning of our "marriage" with G-d. Parashat Naso tells of the completion of the "wedding," how our nation succeeded in recovering from the tragic failure of the golden calf, in rebuilding our trust and faithfulness, so we could again be worthy of "marrying" Hashem, of entering into a unique, intimate bond with Him. The story of the Mishkan's completion teaches us that we need to earn this special relationship through loyalty and devotion. If we prioritize other interests and concerns over the Torah, if we choose to place our trust in people and forces other than Hashem, then we are betraying Him and thus become unworthy of His special protection and blessings. If we want to benefit from our relationship with G-d, we need to earn it through unbridled fealty to His commands, and by remaining uncompromisingly and unflinchingly committed to the Torah, without being misled by the alluring "golden calves" that threaten to pull us away from our loyalty to Hashem.

When the Mishkan was inaugurated on Rosh Chodesh Nissan, all twelve Nesi'im united in one offering of “six covered wagons and twelve cattle”; only afterward did each Nasi bring his individual offering on his designated day. The lesson is that on Rosh Chodesh Nissan every Jew is empowered to unite with the entire Jewish people, and together as one to take part in erecting the Mishkan etc. (2) One should increase in studying the Halachos of Pesach. As the Arizal states, even the slightest amount of chametz on Pesach affects one's conduct for the entire year; therefore, one will surely spare no effort to avoid chametz, by studying the relevant halachos etc.2 excerpts from sichos of Rosh Chodesh Nissan 5742 For a transcript in English of the Sicha: https://thedailysicha.com/?date=30-03-2025

Daily Halacha Podcast - Daily Halacha By Rabbi Eli J. Mansour
On "Shabbat Zachor," the Shabbat before Purim, we take two Torah scrolls from the Heichal. After reading the regular Torah portion from the first Torah, we open the second scroll and read for the Maftir reading the final verses of Parashat Ki-Teitzei (Devarim 25:17-19) which command us to recount Amalek's attack on Benei Yisrael. According to many Halachic authorities, including the Shulchan Aruch, the annual reading of these verses constitutes a Torah obligation. The Zachor reading differs in this regard from the standard Torah reading, in that it is a Torah obligation. In light of the unique status of the Zachor reading, is it proper for the congregation to read along with the Ba'al Koreh (reader) from their Chumashim as he reads Zachor? Although some Rabbis indeed encouraged reading Zachor along with the Ba'al Koreh, Chacham Ovadia Yosef, in his work Chazon Ovadia (Laws of Purim, p. 4), rules that to the contrary, this practice is inappropriate. Firstly, he notes that the Torah introduces the obligation to recall Amalek's assault with the term "Zachor" (literally, "Remember") – the same term with which the Torah introduces the obligation of Kiddush on Shabbat (Shemot 20:8). The Sages understood the word "Zachor" as a reference to verbal recitation, thus requiring that one verbally declare the sanctity of Shabbat every Shabbat, and verbally recall the incident of Amalek once a year. As we know, one can fulfill his obligation of Kiddush by listening to its recitation from somebody else. The Halachic principle of "Shomei'a Ke'oneh" establishes that by carefully listening to somebody else's recitation, one is considered to have personally recited the given text. Therefore, one is not required to personally recite Kiddush on Shabbat, and it suffices for him to listen to its recitation by another person. Similarly, the obligation to read the Zachor section can be fulfilled by listening to the reader, and there is thus no need for the congregation to read the verses of Zachor along with the Ba'al Koreh, as they satisfy their obligation by carefully listening to his reading. Furthermore, Chacham Ovadia adds, the Zachor obligation requires reading this section from a proper Torah scroll. Therefore, the congregation can fulfill their obligation only by listening to the Ba'al Koreh's reading, whereby they are considered to have themselves read the Zachor section from a Torah scroll. If they read from their Chumashim, then they do not fulfill their obligation. It is therefore appropriate for the congregation to remain perfectly silent during the Zachor reading and carefully listen to each word read by the Ba'al Koreh. There is some discussion among the Halachic authorities as to whether or not women are included in the obligation to hear the Zachor reading, and therefore many women indeed make a point to come to the synagogue on Shabbat Zachor to hear this reading. Many communities conduct a special Zachor reading on the afternoon of Shabbat Zachor for women who are unable to attend synagogue services in the morning. Some Rabbis discouraged this practice, arguing that it is inappropriate to take the Torah scroll from the Heichal for this reading, since no Beracha is recited over this reading and it is unclear whether or not it is in fact required. Chacham Ovadia Yosef, however (In Chazon Ovadia – Laws of Purim, p. 10), encourages this practice, claiming that reading the Zachor section for women is indeed a worthy enough purpose to warrant removing the Torah from the Heichal. He draws proof to his position from the practice of Rabbi Moshe Greenwald (early 20th-century author of the "Arugat Ha'bosem") to remove the Torah from the Heichal each morning during the first twelve days of Nissan and read from the section of the "Nesi'im" in the Book of Bamidbar (7:1-8:4). Even though reading from the "Nesi'im" section during this period is not required by Halacha, and is merely a Minhag (custom), this practice is deemed worthwhile enough to allow removing the Torah from the Heichal. Certainly, then, it is proper to conduct a special Zachor reading for women in deference to the view among the authorities that the Zachor obligation applies to both men and women. Why is no Beracha recited over the Mitzva of reading Zachor? Many Mitzvot that we perform require the recitation of a Beracha. Seemingly, then, before the Zachor reading we should recite the Beracha "Asher Kideshanu Be'mitzvotav Ve'tzivanu Li'zkor Ma'aseh Amalek." Why did the Rabbis not require the recitation of a Beracha before the performance of this Mitzva? Chacham Ovadia (Chazon Ovadia – Laws of Purim, p. 11) cites those who answer this question on the basis of the Gemara's comment in Masechet Megila (10b) that the Almighty does not rejoice in the destruction of the wicked. Although the wicked people in the world must be eliminated, their death should not be a cause of joy and celebration. Thus, for example, when the ministering angels wished to sing a song of praise upon the drowning of the Egyptians in the sea, God exclaimed, "My creatures are drowning at sea – and you wish to sing a song of praise?!" Therefore, even though we must conduct a special reading to recall the obligation to destroy Amalek, the Sages chose not to require the recitation of a Beracha, which would express a feeling of joy and excitement over the destruction of the wicked. Summary: On the Shabbat before Purim we read for the Maftir reading the section of "Zachor" from a separate Torah scroll. The congregation should remain silent during the reading, rather than read along with the Ba'al Koreh (reader). Some authorities require women to hear this reading, as well. Many communities therefore conduct a special Zachor reading during the afternoon of Shabbat Zachor for women who cannot attend the morning services, and this is a proper practice.

I'm just not sure that the rest of this campaign includes much besides that.'” You can read the full article here: https://www.nytimes.com/2024/07/29/us/politics/kamala-harris-2020-positions.html 4:45: The Carpet Doesn't Match the Drapes: What the hell did former U.S. Congressman Patrick Murphy just say on Fox News? 5:05pm- In the week since President Joe Biden dropped out of the 2024 presidential race and selected Kamala Harris to be his successor, clips have emerged of Harris advocating for some truly bizarre policies—including a ban on fracking, a mandatory gun buyback initiated via executive authority, placing a limit on red meat consumption, providing taxpayer-funded health care to undocumented migrants in the country illegally, and the complete abolition of private health insurance. Rich notes that if Democrats feel as though Harris is incapable of defeating Trump, they won't hesitate to replace her as their candidate. Currently, Harris appears to be polling slightly better than Biden had been—though, Trump still leads in most swing states as well as nationally. 5:10pm- Karens for Kamala! According to Reuters, more than 160,000 people joined a “white women for Kamala Harris” Zoom call. While speaking on behalf of Kamala Harris' presidential campaign, Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro alleged Donald Trump intends to “use the department of justice to attack people who don't think like him.” He also inaccurately claimed Donald Trump wants to confiscate tips from waiters and waitresses, despite Trump's campaign pledge to end taxes on tips. It sounds like Shapiro desperately wants to be selected as Harris' running mate. 5:40pm- J.D. Tuccille of Reason writes: “Imagine you're a prominent ‘disinformation expert' once hired to head a government board to fight alleged untruths but unceremoniously dumped from the position when the board was dissolved amidst public outcry. Smeared oh so cruelly as the would-be chief censor of a government body tasked with policing people's speech, you sue your critics for defamation to set the record straight. And then…the judge tosses out your case, saying you and your stillborn board really were created to engage in censorship, and descriptions to that effect are accurate. Ouch, Nina Jankowicz. [00:17:34] Kari acknowledges the divide and discusses how individuals in The Carpentries often pick a focus, be it teaching or lesson development, though some do cross over between data and open source contributions. [00:19:37] Richard probes into the potential contribution of ‘data people' to the burnout of open source maintainers and whether they should also contribute to the maintenance. Kari agrees on the correlation but suggests it might be a confidence issues and emphasizes the need to educate these individuals on the importance of their contributions. [00:21:12] Richard seeks a clearer definition of what constitutes a contribution within The Carpentries, and Kari responds by referring to their Code of Conduct which clarifies that contributions are welcome as long as they adhere to it. [00:22:45] What is Kari's long-term vision for The Carpentries? She envisions their lessons being taught in hundreds of languages and spreading their educational model without a reliance on strong internet connections and mentions currently having a multilingual open source glossary called Glosario. [00:25:26] Kari talks about the hardest part of her job, which is that volunteer capacity and revenue generation are current organizational priorities. [00:28:29] What would Kari focus on in open source if she wasn't with The Carpentries? She expresses her desire to concentrate efforts on equity and inclusion, specifically increasing the involvement of people of color in open source within the U.S. [00:31:20] Richard asks Kari what she's really excited about for the future of The Carpentries. She shares her enthusiasm about potential strategic alliances with other organizations to share resources and thrive together, and the creation of resources for communities to run their own inclusive events. [00:32:58] Find out where you can follow Kari online. Quotes [00:06:46] “We've supported workshops in over 64 countries, and it's because of our volunteers.” [00:09:31] “We know that decisions that impact our lives are made with data.” [00:10:48] “Before I came on staff at The Carpentries, I had never heard of R, Python. I had never heard of GitHub, and I have a PhD.” [00:16:07] “Appreciation is different depending on what's important to you.” Spotlight [00:33:55] Richard's spotlight is Nisha Ghatak, from NeSI, who ran two of The Carpentries workshops he attended in New Zealand. »
