Justice David Souter has died.  Souter was one of the most private, low-profile justices ever to have served on the Supreme Court. He rarely gave interviews or speeches. Yet his tenure was anything but low profile. Deemed a “home run” nominee by Republicans, Souter defied partisan expectations on the bench and ultimately ceded his seat to a Democratic president. As we reflect on his legacy, we wanted to share this episode again.  Produced two years ago, this episode tells the story of how “No More Souters” became a rallying cry for Republicans and inspired a backlash that would change the Court forever.Voices in the episode include:• Ashley Lopez — NPR political correspondent• Anna Sale — host of Slate's Death, Sex & Money podcast • Tinsley Yarbrough — author and former political science professor at East Carolina University• Heather Gerken — Dean of Yale Law School and former Justice Souter clerk• Kermit Roosevelt III — professor at University of Pennsylvania School of Law and former Justice Souter clerk• Judge Peter Rubin — Associate Justice on Massachusetts Appeals Court and former Justice Souter clerk• Governor John H. Dylan Weisman spent the pandemic "in the lab," pouring over numbers that few had ever bothered to look at before when it came to the game of PLO. While solvers had been in use for years by high-stakes pros for no-limit hold'em, pot-limit Omaha had been largely ignored, and Weisman saw an opportunity.  The work has paid off in a big way, with more than $6 million in recorded earnings since the summer of 2021. Of that, $4.4 million has come in some form of Omaha, putting him at no. 2 on the PLO all-time money list behind only Finland's Eelis Parssinen. The 32-year-old has earned wins at the PokerGO Cup, PGT Kickoff Series, U.S. Poker Open, PGT PLO Series, and PGT Mixed Game Series, as well as two World Series of Poker bracelets. In March, he chopped the Triton Montenegro $100,000 PLO high roller for nearly $2 million.  As a result of his stellar year on the circuit, which includes five titles and 14 final tables, the California native now sits just outside the top 10 in the Card Player Player of the Year race.  Highlights from this interview include cards with grandma, robotics academy, Dr. GTO can play the harmonica, being the youngest product of Moneymaker boom and gambling at 13, jobs for former poker players, $15 an hour after busting his roll, gravitating to Galfond, a model of business intelligence, teaching in Vietnam, burning out in Chicago leads to candles in Los Angeles, this seat is not open, six-figure buy-ins, ranking PLO players, keeping strategy secrets, the difference between your first and second bracelet, how long solvers actually take, heads-up vs. Blez for $200k, a bad beat that sent him to the ground, almost dying in a garage, and a hoodie that you can execute well inside of.

Send us a Text Message.Have you ever found yourself caught in the crossfire between the pursuit of wealth and the necessity of health? As your guide on this journey, I, Dr. Sapna Shah-Haque, invite you to join me in a heartfelt exploration of this tug-of-war that so many of us face. This episode isn't just a theoretical debate; it's an intimate conversation about realigning our priorities, sparked by a personal experience that brought home the ephemeral nature of life. We'll traverse the complexities of why our society often values financial success over physical well-being and discuss how to dismantle the barriers, whether self-imposed or external, that keep us from choosing health first.Drawing from the wisdom of Dr. Weisman and Dr. Teri Baydar [next week's episode] we delve into the transformative power of incremental improvement and the art of self-compassion. Together, we'll recognize that the truest riches we can amass are the bonds we forge and the memories we create. So, let's embrace the unpredictable roller coaster of life, cherishing each twist and turn with those who matter most. I promise you'll walk away with a renewed perspective on what constitutes wealth in its purest form. Share this conversation with someone who needs a reminder of the value of health, because when it comes down to it, we truly are all in this together. What You'll Learn:1. Why do we prioritize wealth vs health?2. Outlining what truly matters and why.3. Optimizing how to thrive in the storm of life.Though I am a physician, this is not medical advice. This is only a tool that physicians can use to get ideas on how to deal with burnout and/or know they are not alone. In this episode with award-winning author and journalist Alan Weisman, we discuss his 2013 book Countdown: Our Last, Best Hope for a Future on Earth? capturing his journey to over 20 countries over five continents to ask what experts agreed were probably the most important questions on Earth, and also the hardest. ‘How many humans can the planet hold without capsizing?' This wide-ranging and immensely stimulating interview captures how growth-biased cultures, religions, nationalities, tribes, and political systems are collectively undermining our ability to live within planetary limits, and also offers inspiring examples of people finding ways of better balancing our needs with those of the planet's and humanity's future - examples which could provide ways of imagining how we might better get through this bottleneck century. We discuss the intended and unintended consequences of the Green Revolution which pushed us grossly beyond Earth's carrying capacity, while causing irreparable harm to natural ecosystems. Weisman unpacks the ethnic, religious, and political complexities and history of the Israel-Palestine conflict and how pronatalism and ecological overshoot factor into it. We also chat about some of the most successful family planning programs across the world, such as in Iran, Thailand, and Costa Rica, as well as outliers with the worst programs, including in China and India. The controversial role of the Catholic Church in pushing for large families not just across the West, but also in Africa, as well as in shunning the population conversation in environmental conferences, is also highlighted. Today I'm excited to launch our new-for-2021 Productive Living series. We'll talk about topics relevant to health, relationships, money, mindset and self-care, homemaking and home management, and creativity and fun. This week we'll be looking at the other topical area: career, as I share with you my conversation with physician and life coach Errin Weisman.  As a female physician who almost gave up medicine, Errin found herself in the pit of burnout in 2014. From the outside, it seemed like she had it all–a successful career, children, a new home–but internally she was numb. And she was ready to do whatever it took to feel better. She thought she had done everything right, so why did she feel so bad? She wondered if something was wrong with her. As she began her journey to wellness, she realized she wasn't the only one feeling this way and decided she wanted to help others. 2 WAYS TO GET INCREDIBLE HELP AT LOW-COST!!! David Souter is one the most private, low-profile justices ever to have served on the Supreme Court. He rarely gives interviews or speeches. Yet his tenure was anything but low profile. Deemed a “home run” nominee by Republicans, Souter defied partisan expectations on the bench and ultimately ceded his seat to a Democratic president. In this episode, the story of how “No More Souters” became a rallying cry for Republicans and inspired a backlash that would change the Court forever. Roseann Quinn was a young, single school teacher working at St. Joseph's School for the Deaf and pursuing a graduate degree that would help her advance her career. She was independent and had a bright future. Then on January 2, 1973, she was brutally murdered in her New York apartment by a man she met at a neighborhood bar. Her death would become a talking point for those against the Woman's Liberation Movement—citing her "high risk" lifestyle as the catalyst for her own demise. Of course we know that the only one to blame here is the vicious killer himself, and Roseann Quinn was merely a symbol for his rage.Associated Press. 1973.
