This week, no harm ever came from reading a book, and we test out if the same is true of watching a movie as we discuss 1999's The Mummy on the day it returns to theatres for a 25th anniversary re-release. The Mummy is written and directed by Stephen Sommers, and stars Brendan Fraser, Rachel Weisz, John Hannah, Arnold Vosloo, Patricia Velasquez, Oded Fehr, Kevin J. O'Connor and Erick Avari. Hayley has put this one up for canon consideration, as it is once again the last Friday of the month and we just might be adding another title to the illustrious pod pantheon. It's a movie that did big business on home video, and may just do decent business at the weekend box office again 25 years later this weekend. If you'd like to watch The Mummy before listening to our discussion, it is currently streaming on Netflix, Amazon Prime, Tubi and Starz at the time of publication. Not sure how! But it is. Other films discussed on this episode include Defending Your Life, The Good Place, Live By Night, Veronica Guerin, The Fifth Estate, BlackBerry, Bon Cop Bad Cop, Stronger, The Exorcist: Believer, Valkyrie, Inglourious Basterds, Oblivion, Knight & Day, The Beekeeper, Suicide Squad, Raiders of the Lost Ark, Blast From The Past, Stargate, The Mummy Returns, The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor, Batman ('89), The Amazing Spider-Man, The Rocketeer, Mr. Deeds, Daredevil, Speed Racer and Spider-Man 2. We'll be back next week to kick off a new month, as David Leitch's TV adaptation The Fall Guy hits the big screen. And you know what else falls? Domino...s. Yes, we're going back to the well with our man Tony Scott as we watch his 2005 thriller Domino, starring Keira Knightley, Mickey Rourke and Edgar Ramirez, which is sadly not streaming anywhere. Until then, we'll see you at the movies!!

Above the Title: A Colin Farrell Podcast

Colin Farrell might only be in this movie for thirty seconds, but we're still gonna break two hours talking about it. This week, Above the Title takes a look at the only cameo of Colin's career (we're pretty sure) and the capper to his early association with Joel Schumacher - it's crusading journalist biopic and failed Cate Blanchett Oscar play Veronica Guerin! We can't agree on whether this movie is good but we do both love Colin's performance here. Topics include the Nicole Kidman AMC promo, the complicated history of skinheads, the Mount Rushmore of Blanchett performances, and, weirdly, a return to cinematic depictions of Dublin crime boss Martin Cahill. Connor gets a lot of mileage out of his Eddie Brock impression. Cole speaks a controversial truth about nepo babies. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Why in the world was this file so important? I had to know. And so this week, we have the bizarre tale of the unsolved murder of Father Niall Molloy. No quiero hacerlo cuanto tenga 60 años.

Welcome to The B-Side, from The Film Stage. Here we talk about movie directors! Not the movies that made them famous or kept them famous, but the ones they made in between. Today we pay our respects to Joel Schumacher, who passed away on June 22, 2020. A costume designer-turned-director, Schumacher made a name for himself with St. Elmo's Fire and The Lost Boys in the mid-to-late 1980s. As demonstrated in those hit films, the filmmaker had an unparalleled eye for young talent. We examine four of lesser-remembered pictures: Cousins, Dying Young, Flawless, and Veronica Guerin. There's plenty of tangents here, as Schumacher was quite an outspoken sort. There are many interviews to reference and admire. We discuss his championing of young star Julia Roberts during her tumultuous rise to fame, the deep love he reveals for his characters (as evidenced in Cousins especially), the passionate failure of Flawless, and the complicated canonization of the title character in Veronica Guerin. We also take the time to celebrate good pal Jason Bailey's piece in which he reminds his readers that Schumacher saved Batman for a moment there. Veronica Guerin took on Ireland's booming gangland criminals in 1994, who were flooding the country with cannabis and other illegal substances and engaging in an all out war with their competitors. When she approached John Gilligan, the man in charge, at his home, she set in motion a series of events that would lead to her death, and to the downfall of the criminal set she had set her eyes on. The events of 1994 changed the landscape of organised crime in Ireland forever, as well how the authorities would attempt to curb their enjoyment of their assets. But would they be held responsible for Veronica's death? Podcast Promo this week is from Tara and Barney over at Bloody Murder! In the 1990's, Ireland saw a boom in organised crime and the importation of drugs that it had not experienced before. Criminals set themselves up at the head of drugs empires and reaped the benefit of their crimes to the tune of millions of pounds a year. Gardai struggled to keep up with these developments, and had no recourse to the extravagant spending of the crime bosses, who set up shell companies and owned expensive homes, vehicles and lived lavish lifestyles. When Veronica Guerin, crime correspondent for the Sunday Independent, began asking questions of these gangsters, she found herself in the firing line. Quite literally. It is said that every Irish person remembers where they were when crusading journalist Veronica Guerin was killed. But when the Cate Blanchett movie about Veronica was released, it seems that not enough people remembered to go to the cinema… Despite being a Jerry Bruckheimer/Joel Schumacher Hollywood production, the film has some estimable Irish credentials: authentic Dublin locations, an impeccable accent from Cate… and Brenda feckin’ Fricker as her Mam!!! Not so much a “bad” movie as a horribly worthy one, it does feature small pleasures like Colin Farrell’s sexy neck tattoos and Cate’s Princess Diana hairdo. Brian learned a lot about the Irish underworld, but Seán still can’t get the maudlin sounds of “Fields of Athenry” out of his ears. Saint Veronica, pray for us!! Our Schumacher mini-season concludes with the 2003 biopic VERONICA GUERIN. For a second week running (savour it), we're largely in agreement with our reviews of the film, and then we talk about how these events passed us by, the difficulties in bringing a real life to screen, and the parallels between the protagonist and a quite surprising tortured genius.
