In episode #2 of the Best of Career Crossroads series, we revisit my interview with Kait.Kait's journey to her current career took her through a winding road in her late teens and early 20's. She tried multiple educational paths and finally settled on fashion as her career of choice. But the path to being a Merchandising Manager was bumpy, and she turned to a more stable office administration role where she thrived. With a constant urge to better herself, and with the support of her colleagues and friends, she moved across the country, again, to begin a marketing program at Humber College. Going back to school as she was turning 30, she wanted to have the traditional student experience she had heard about and joined the Humber College First-Year Experience program; a decision that proved to be very beneficial to her long term. After two lectures with her Organizational Behaviour professor, she had a conversation that changed the whole path of her degree. Listen now to how Kait ended up in a career in Human Resources.___________________You can find Career Crossroads at careercrossroads.ca or follow us on social media: Instagram: @career_crossroadsLinkedIn: Career Crossroads PodcastFacebook: Career Crossroads PodcastTikTok: @jonathancollaton

Episode 82: Jon Farriss; A Special Relationship. In this modern world where times have been tougher than ever “true friendships” are golden. So today we celebrate the enduring relationship between Jon Farriss and Britain's Simon Yeo whose lives cross paths in the early 1990s and has stood the test of time and distance! Simon Yeo was a Merchandising Manager with Polydor Music and got acquainted with the entire band through this role. A chance follow-up meeting with Jon through mutual friends in Hong Kong sowed the seeds for a lifetime connection that saw him become Simon's best man at his wedding, play live at his 50th birthday with other INXS members and go on tour through the USA on the Elegantly Wasted Tour. Simon never betrays the confidences of Jon and the band's inner secrets however does delve deep into numerous fascinating anecdotes such as a dangerous night out with mobsters, the struggles that Michael seemed to be dealing with late in his life, and the distinct lack of record support for INXS' Elegantly Wasted release vs their sycophantic love for U2's miserable nadir album release the same year POP. Forever erudite and full of love and admiration for INXS' globe-trotting ways, Simon went from a passing interest in the band to a fully-fledged appreciator of what it took for them to climb to international fame and the resultant toll it took out of each band member. As always, Access all Areas tries to take you back in time to a place with people we love and provide a retrospective understanding of what took place at the time good, bad or ugly. We thank Simon Yeo immensely for his honesty, insights, and passion in recounting an era once lived but a “special relationship” that endures. Face it, we all miss meeting in-person; the ability to see, touch, taste products, feeling the energy of people when you are sitting across the table face to face, and sharing a joke with them over cocktails during a networking function. Last year I've been to almost 20 ECRM Food & Beverage sessions as well as other industry events, and like everyone else, I've had to accept the fact those personal connections will not happen for quite some time. However, being forced to adapt to a virtual world has forced us to embrace new technologies, and in doing so we've learned the efficiencies they can deliver. Brian Ferrier, Merchandising Manager for Giant Eagle is a case-in-point. While he loves meeting with vendors in person, he admits that virtual tools have driven efficiencies into his day-to-day activities, particularly his participation in ECRM's recent Candy Planning: Easter & Valentine's Day Virtual Session. In this episode, I speak with Brian about how he's adpted to this new virtual word, how it's helped give him some time back to focus on strategic initiatives, and where he sees virtual playing a role in the future. He also share for suppliers on what he likes to see in virtual presentations.

The Chinese toy market is on the rise! With an average annual growth rate of almost 20% and the implementation of the two-child policy many in the industry are looking to develop hit toys for the over 236 million children under age 14 on the mainland. Today I interview China market expert Kirsten Ytterbo to discuss the opportunities and challenges of selling to China. Previously she spent almost 5 years in Shanghai and Hong Kong as a Merchandising Manager for Toys R Us and she is the former Senior VP of King Bee Toys. She has immersed herself in the culture and has some great advice to share! Listen in as we discuss what brands resonate with the Chinese market and what cultural faux pas to avoid. In contrast to the US adult collector market why is the China market comprised almost entirely of purchases for children? Learn why top brands in China are splitting into 2 pricing tiers. We also discuss the impact of Tmall.com and online shopping in China. Listen, learn and enjoy the show!
