The downtown Seattle Starbucks location at Fifth Avenue and Pike Street is in its last week. A note on the door from the District Manager and Store Manager said the permanent closure would happen on Sept. 30, but a reason was not given. "We would like to thank you for being part of our store community. It has been a great pleasure to connect with you every day,” the notice said. More than a month ago, the company closed its popular First Avenue and Pike Street locations. A company spokesperson said the store will re-open again, but the timeline is vague, as is the reason for the closure. The now vacant site is at First Avenue and Pike Street, just across from the Pike Place Market, where cruise ship passengers swarm the streets.

Yesterday, we celebrated the grand opening of Store 8861, our brand-new Walmart Neighborhood Market in Santa Rosa Beach, Florida! A grand opening is always filled with excitement, and this one was particularly special. It represents the first of the 150 new stores we're planning to build or convert in the next five years along with our ongoing efforts to remodel hundreds of our existing stores to better serve our customers. In this episode of The Huddle, I had the pleasure to chat with Brandon, the Store Manager, at this beautiful new location. His journey with Walmart has been truly inspiring. When we was a Support Manager, he had the opportunity to assist in opening a new store in Gulfport, Mississippi, and has dreamt of opening a store as a Store Manager ever since. Today, he is living that dream and is thrilled to serve the Santa Rosa community! We talked about the unique aspects of this new store, including its proximity to the beach and the capacity to cater to both locals and tourists with a larger square footage, extensive assortment, and standout pharmacy. We also talked about all the amazing long-term associates who have transferred from other stores to support this new location, bringing a wealth of experience to help the new team thrive. We're thrilled to bring nearly 100 new jobs to the area and look forward to providing outstanding service to all of our customers on Florida's Gulf Coast. Whether you're a local or visiting over the summer, we'd love to have you stop by and check out our new store!

Mike Pompei grew up in a big Italian family just outside of Buffalo NY. His family was very musical and it seemed to rub off on Mike, who currently plays wineries and breweries throughout Sacramento. At the age of 12, just as his generation of pop music was becoming a priority, the Pompei family moved to the sunny enviorns of Sacramento, California. Following in his older brother's footsteps, Mike eventually went on to work at Tower Records Watt Avenue where Ken Sockolov was the Store Manager. Alternating between working at Tower Records locations and Tower Posters, Mike found his niche. Running the Tower Posters store on the 3rd floor of the Westwood (L.A.) location, Mike received a call one day from Dick Harris, the Division Manager for Posters. Told to “shut it all down” and ship the posters product back to Sacramento, Mike wasn't told what his future was. It was then that Westwood Store Manager Chris Hopson told Mike to stay and work with him. When Chris Hopson left Westwood to start up Tower Advertising in Sacramento he took Pompei with him, where Mike worked for 18 years. On this episode Mike Pompei tells us the various roles he assumed in Tower Advertising, the stress of meeting deadlines, dealing with newspapers and radio stations, his travels visiting stores and media markets, meeting face to face with record label brass at NARM and a hilarous enccounter with a member of Aerosmith at one of the Tower Annual Conferences.

I loved my chat with Rachel Morgan. She gives us so many good nuggets that we can apply not only to sales, but to life! Rachel has worked in retail sales both as a sales associate and Store Manager for a combined 13+ years. While she has worked mostly within the fine jewelry industry, she also has experience in clothing and beauty both online and in-person. As a Store Manager, she led her team to nine record sales months, trained assistant managers, mentored new managers, and also taught an onboarding workshop to managers in a corporate setting. Rachel brings her frontline retail knowledge from working on the sales floor, proven techniques and strategies to boost sales and train sales teams, and tools to train teams to sell with enthusiasm and excitement to this session to help you learn to increase your sales and drive long-term growth in your business. I encourage you to follow her. She is always providing such value! "You were right about one thing, Master. The negotiations were short." -Obi Wan Kenobi On today's episode Abby and Margot welcome their next guest, Jesse Bartel. Jesse is the Store Manager of BookHampton in East Hampton, NY. In his free time, he likes to take photos of street lights at night and write about nerdy things. He has an MFA from Sarah Lawrence and spends much of his time indoors. Jesse shares that his journey with anxiety began with panic attacks in his teen years, and followed him into adulthood. It manifested in a variety of ways such as: imagining social situations before they happened, being overwhelmed in visually stimulating or loud spaces, being stuck in negative thought patterns and more. In his 20's he would often "quiet the brain" by self medicating. After starting down a path of sobriety, tapping into a range of coping skills, and being more self reflective he was able to see anxiety as an opportunity to learn more about himself and be truly authentic. Jesse shares so many powerful and useful tips and anecdotes and reminds the Warriors that we can negotiate with anxiety and be proactive as we go. No matter where our associates are in life when they join Walmart, there are so many opportunities to grow and develop a career – and we are committed to investing in our people to help make their dreams a reality. Carvon Smith's story is an amazing example of this. Carvon started working at Walmart in 2015, taking a part-time role in maintenance while he was in school. He soon took on a bigger role – and then another – and in January Carvon became the Manager at Store #530 in El Dorado, AR! In this episode of The Huddle, I talk with Carvon at his first Year Beginning Meeting as a Store Manager about his journey, and his advice for others looking to grow in their career. He shares great insight about the importance of building on your strengths, learning from others, and keeping a positive mindset when leading teams through challenges. I am so impressed by Carvon, and we can all learn something from his “fire and desire” to make the difference.
