Fiqh 01-04: Utensils in Islamic Jurisprudence: Purity, Usage, and Rulings | Insights from Shaykh Assim Al-Hakeem | Zad Academy Audio | Blogpost by Zayd HajiIn Islamic jurisprudence (Fiqh), the chapter of utensils (Al-Aniyah) comes right after the discussion of water. The reason is clear: water—the foundation of purification in Islam—is usually stored or carried in containers. Therefore, scholars examine whether the container itself affects the purity of water or not.Halal Animals:If the animal (e.g., cow, camel, sheep) was slaughtered Islamically, its hide is pure whether tanned or not.If the animal died naturally, its skin becomes impure until it is tanned. Once tanned, it becomes pure and permissible to use.Haram Animals:Skins from pigs, dogs, or predatory animals remain impure (najis) and cannot be used, regardless of tanning.Abdullah b. Abbas said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) say: When the skin is tanned it becomes purified.Sahih Muslim 366ahttps://sunnah.com/muslim:366aNarrated Shu'bah bin Al-Hakam: "I heard Ibn Abi Laila narrating that Hudhaifah asked for water, so someone brought him a vessel made from silver. He threw it, and said: 'I have indeed forbade him, but he refused to stop! Indeed the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) prohibited drinking from silver and gold vessels, and from wearing silk and Dibaj, and he (ﷺ) said: "If is for them in this world, and for you in the Hereafter."He said: There are narrations on this topic from Umm Salamah, Al-Bara', and 'Aishah.[Abu 'Eisa said: ] This Hadith is Hasan Sahih.Jami` at-Tirmidhi 1878https://sunnah.com/tirmidhi:1878“The Prophet ﷺ had a cup which broke, and he repaired it with a silver wire.” (Sunan al-Tirmidhi 1878, sunnah.com)While the act of using gold/silver utensils is sinful, if one performed wudu using water from such a container, the wudu remains valid, since the water itself is pure.Utensils of Non-MuslimsAbu Tha'labah al-khushani said that he asked the Messenger of Allah(ﷺ): We live in the neighbourhood of the People of the Book and they cook in their pots(the flesh of) swine and drink wine in their vessels. The Messenger of Allah(ﷺ) said: If you find any other pots, then eat in them and drink. But if you do not find any others, then wash them with water and eat and drink (In them).Sunan Abi Dawud 3839https://sunnah.com/abudawud:3839Abu Tha'laba al-Khushani reported: I came to Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) and said: Allah's Messenger, we are in the land of the People of the Book, (so) we eat in their utensils, and (live) in a hunting region. where I hunt with, the help of my bow, and hunt with my trained dog, or with my dog which is not trained. So inform me what is lawful (Halal) for us out of that. He (the Holy Prophet) said: Regarding what you have mentioned of the fact that you live in the land belonging to the People of the Book and so you eat in their utensils, but if you can get utensils other than theirs, then don't eat in them; but if you do not find any, then wash them and eat in them. And regarding what you have mentioned about (your living) in a hunting region, what you hunt, (strike) with the help of your bow, recite the name of Allah (while shooting an arrow) and then eat; and what you catch with the help of your trained dog, recite the name of Allah (while letting oil) the dog and then eat it, and what you get with the help of your untrained dog, (if you find it alive) and slaughter it (according to the law of the Shari'ah), eat it.Sahih Muslim 1930ahttps://sunnah.com/muslim:1930aImportant NotesSkins of halal animals → pure if slaughtered properly, otherwise pure only after tanning.Skins of haram animals → always impure, cannot be purified.Gold and silver utensils → strictly prohibited for eating/drinking. Silver may be used for repairs.Utensils of non-Muslims → permissible if pure; wash if doubtful.Modern utensils/appliances → apply the same fiqh rules on purity.

Just wrapped an incredible podcast episode with Jasim, the visionary behind a $100M/year Amazon brand—starting from selling college textbooks at 15 to now acquiring, scaling, and partnering with top e-commerce brands. Here are 5 game-changing takeaways from our conversation: From Arbitrage to AcquisitionJasim started by flipping textbooks, then scaled to wholesale, and now buys and partners with brands—offering inventory financing, full-channel management, and explosive growth on Amazon, Walmart, and Target. Pitfalls of Hyper-GrowthExpanding too fast cost him early on—warehouse leases, hiring missteps, and siloed teams. Now, standardization, communication, and KPIs are non-negotiable. The Power of PartnershipsUnlike typical agencies, Jasim's team buys inventory upfront and manages end-to-end for brands. Their sweet spot? $1M–$20M brands hungry for scalable growth. AI as a Force MultiplierFrom translating global team comms to generating ad creatives and split-testing ideas, AI has supercharged their efficiency. (P.S. Google's real-time translation tool is a game-changer!) The Future of Amazon SellersWith Amazon increasingly going direct-to-manufacturer, Jasim's focus is on adding unmatched value—through supply chain mastery, data-driven creative, and inventory dominance. Final Wisdom:“Double down on what works. Cut the 80% of SKUs that don't move the needle. And build teams that run toward challenges, not away from them.”

In this week's first segment (2:54 to 13:57), hosts Brent Butterworth and Dennis Burger opine about a new report from Strata-gee.com about consumer trends in difficult economic times, and speculate about what all of this may mean for hi-fi, especially given how luxury-focused our hobby has become.  Next up (14:27 to 28:28) they springboard off an article about the 60th anniversary of Stereophile to discuss how that publication changed the way we read and write about audio, how the industry has changed since the magazine launched, as well as how much it has changed since John Atkinson became editor in the late 1980s.  Finally (29:09 to 47:43), they dig into SoundStage! This week we look at why OLED TVs are losing the price war to Mini-LED and share some of the winners of the Expert Imaging and Sound Association EISA Awards. Plus we read your emails and look at the week's news. News: Roku Channel adds Scripps, NBC local stations to lineup Streaming Overtakes Cable in July, Leads Platform Rankings for the First Time MoviePass returns from the dead—again—on Labor Day Google TV Touts Performance and Storage Improvements Why OLED TVs Are Losing The Price War To Mini-LED The picture quality benefits of the best OLED TVs are widely known and rightly lauded – if you want images with perfect blacks and detailed shadows, OLED has long been a go-to for discerning viewers. (Full article here…) No budget OLED  Pricing levels for OLED panels remain prohibitively high and that's even with the recent addition  of Samsung Display to the supplier mix. The current situation simply doesn't work for a budget b brand, one that's focused on establishing market credentials while maintaining pricing aggressive enough to sway buyers over. Enter mini-LED: the OLED alternative Hisense expects to sell its 65-inch U8H mini-LED ULED TV for $950-$1,000. Samsung's mini-LED-backlit QN90B Neo QLED TV displays deep blacks and detailed shadows – kind of like an OLED TV for $2500. That is $500 less than LG's 77” C1 (2022). Note - there are other OLED models that are in the same price range or less than the Samsung QLED. Also you can buy a 2021 model of the C1 for about the same price as the QLED.  Competition Competition will always force manufacturers to be more efficient and price competitive. Competition is coming at OLED on two fronts, other suppliers of OLED panels and mini-LED. One thing to consider is that Mini LED is new and thus has more room to improve the process and cost. This translates to really inexpensive mini-LED panels that may be too difficult for OLED to attain. Regardless of which technology wins, this is good for consumers. Either platform will provide you with an experience reserved only for the highest end consumers of just five years ago, EISA awards The Expert Imaging and Sound Association is the community of 60 technology magazines, websites and social media commentators from 29 countries, specializing in hi-fi, home theater, photo and video, in-car and mobile electronics.
