Join us in the latest episode of A to Z Golfing Podcast where we host a Swag Series event and enjoy the breathtaking views at Hammock Beach. Commendations to Danny Hughes and his amazing team at Hammock Beach Resort on the Ocean Course, who put up quite a venue. With top-notch lunch services, vendor support, and excellent coordination, the event ranks high on our list. We talk about Kevin Lewis, a long-time visitor at the place, who, fortunately, found some time to participate in our event with his partner TyCapps. This team played exceptionally well and won the gross division with a final score of minus four. And we can't forget the nail-biting playoff which left us at the edge of our seats. Three teams went head to head in an alternate shot which was won by last year's Swag Series National champions, Dustin and Spencer Dingus. All 3 teams were fantastic golfers and it was a pleasure to watch them play. We also had amazing interactions with some vendors, including Vienna Beef (Chicago-style hot dog), Titos Liquid Death, E-Z-Go and more. We also spent time with First Tee, which was an amazing experience. Followed by the games, we tried our hand at making a TikTok video and braved jellyfish for capturing a unique photo of the trophy on the beach! We conclude the event with adventures for the upcoming Mid-Pines meetup and tons of excitement. Catch all the fun moments and interesting anecdotes in this episode of the A to Z Golfing podcast. Jeremy has a new fairway wood coming in. Then we got into Joe's trip to North Carolina, where there were a few surprises. We wrapped up the show with the odds and our picks for this weekend's PGA Tournament at Torry Pines. Episode 200Wow, it is hard to believe we have uploaded 200 of these now! Thank you to anyone who has listened and encouraged us to keep at it! We may not be the biggest or most popular golf podcast out there, but we love what we're doing and have no plans to abandon this journey! Again, thanks for all the support! We hope you enjoy this episode, and check out our YouTube channel, where we'll post the podcast video each week!Matt brought up what he thinks could be a "fix" for the Sentry Tournament of Champions. It was an interesting take, and the other guys liked it.Matt also has some new irons in the bag. He dropped Srixon like a stanky fish and switched to New Level Golf. The first significant change to his bag this year is his effort to say no to big-brand golf and show some support to the smaller, unique brands out there! The guys also recapped the ODIN Golf interview and dove into more details about the golf license required to play golf in Germany! That's not a typo. You must take a DMV-style test and pass to play public golf in Germany! Unless you're a member at Pebble Beach! HahaJoe is headed to North Carolina with Dan, Trey, and Julien. They have a great lineup, including; Tobacco Road, Southern Pines, Mid Pines, The Cradle, and maybe a few others. We'll be recapping that on next week's show.Matt Gontarek, aka "The Weatherman," makes his Chasing Daylight premier this week. Matt is a local meteorologist at FOX 5 here in Vegas, and he'll be chiming in each week, giving us a preview of the weekend weather from a golfer's perspective! We wrapped up this weeks show with a Vegas Golf Rant about golf courses in the Valley lately and the pricing that's taking place from a not-so-high-end course. Hello all! Excited to chat with Kyle Franz and Mike Koprowski today about Broomsedge Golf Club and the architectural experiences or themes that will carry into this project. Kyle is now a major artery in the industry, restoring important work and building his own, but he was involved in the courses we all consider as great work. Amongst others, he was there at Barnbougle, at Pacific Dunes, The Rio Olympic Course, and Cabot Links before putting his fingerprint on Mid Pines, Pine Needles, Southern Pines, Country Club of Charleston, and more. ((We're also so excited to see Lookout Mountain))Mike has been working with Kyle since the project at Southern Pines began. As a Pinehurst native, he showed interest in the restoration, and has brought a unique skillset to the table ever since. The two have been working together on plans for Broomsedge Golf Club, a site found and purchased by Mike near Columbia, South Carolina. It's a fresh canvas with Kyle's name on it. We're looking forward to seeing it come together. Enjoy the chat!Cheers, - The Tie GuysKyle's Website: http://www.kylefranzgolf.comMore about Mike: https://nlihc.org/resource/nlihc-welcomes-mike-koprowski-national-campaign-director @thetiepodcast on instagram and twitterthetiegolfpodcast@gmail.com@tieguys @tieguytexasranger @tieguyhs on TikTokGoodWalk Coffee: https://goodwalkcoffee.comCODE: thetie for 20% offBDraddy:bdraddy.comCODE: thetie25 for 25% off

For more than 30 years, David Fruchte has been superintendent at Pine Needles Lodge and Golf Club in Southern Pines, North Carolina, the site of this year's U.S. Women's Open, which once was owned by LPGA legend Peggy Kirk Bell. A graduate of the turfgrass program at Purdue, Fruchte learned the trade from the legendary David Stone at the Honors Course in Chattanooga, Tennessee. Since 1990, Pine Needles has become the epitome of resort golf in the highly competitive North Carolina Sandhills region. In this episode of All Stars of Turf, Fruchte discusses what it takes to enjoy such a lengthy career at the same property that included being the four-time host superintendent of the U.S. Women's Open, including this year's event. Fruchte also talks about what it was like working for Bell, an LPGA legend and pioneer in instruction and introducing the game to thousands of women. Fruchte also opens up about the challenges of post-pandemic golf that includes record rates of play and historic labor challenges.
George Waters is originally from Long Island, NY - his first tentative steps into the business of golf were at St. George's Country Club on Long Island where he worked on the greens team during summer breaks. George would go on to work on the maintenance teams at Royal Dornoch, Merion and The California Club. While studying an economics undergraduate degree, George contacted Tom Doak of Renaissance Golf Design who urged him, over an number of years, to travel as widely as possible, gain on-course experience and consider post-graduate study of landscape architecture. While at the University of Guelph George was accepted as an intern with Renaissance Golf Design, this move would ultimately mean exposure to restoration and design/build projects such as Yeaman's Hall, Mid-Ocean, Pasatiempo, Barnbougle Dunes, Rock Creek Cattle Company, Sebonak, The Renaissance Club and the Strand 9 at Rosapenna. George would go on to work on the Coore and Crenshaw restoration at Pinehurst #2, Kyle Philips' historical renovation at The Cal Club and on the reimagining of Mid Pines in conjunction with Kyle Franz. George now works for the USGA Green Section as Education Manager - given the scope of his expereinces to date he is the ideal guest to explore the intersection of golf course design and maintenance. www.georgewatersgolf.com Special Guest: George Waters.
Kelly Miller had no idea what he was getting into when he married one of Peggy Kirk Bell's daughters and moved to Southern Pines in 1982. “The Bell family and Pine Needles kept me in the game of golf,” Miller says. “I wanted to get into business of some kind, I wasn't sure what.” Miller grew up in Indiana and attended the University of Alabama to play golf, and there he met Peggy Ann Bell, the middle child of Peggy and Warren “Bullet” Bell, the owners since 1953 of the Pine Needles Lodge & Golf Club that featured a 1928 Ross course. Since the Bells' oldest daughter, Bonnie, was traveling the country with her husband, Pat McGowan, on the PGA Tour, and son Kirk was just entering college, it fell to Kelly and Peggy Ann to follow in the footsteps of Peggy and Bullet in running the golf course and lodge. The timing was made further prescient by the fact that Bullet was diagnosed with cancer in early 1984 that passed away that May. “I was an early riser—I'd get here at six in the morning and then Peggy Ann took the night shift,” Miller says. “She would work from three to 11 or whatever it took. We tried to do the same things Peg and Bullet had done for so many years—mingle with the guests, make sure they felt welcome and had a great experience.” Kelly eventually became general manager and along with his mother-in-law led the family and resort to taking their spot in the Sandhills and Pinehurst-area explosion of the 1990s. In 1991, Pine Needles was awarded the U.S. Women's Open for 1996 (and it would further host the event in 2001 and 2007 with a fourth coming in 2022). The family partnered with three individuals in buying the Mid Pines Inn & Golf Club across Midland Road in 1994. Miller struck a deal in 2012 with an eager and creative golf course construction worker and aspiring architect named Kyle Franz to renovate the 1921 Mid Pines course, and that project was roundly applauded by the golf world in 2013, leading Franz to supervise similar work at Pine Needles over the following years. “It's been quite a ride,” Miller says. “I've been here 40 years now, so it's pretty amazing. We've been hosting these championships now for 25 years. Time goes quickly. But it really did start with the 1991 and '92 Tour Championships at Pinehurst No. 2. That spawned the '94 Senior Open, the '99 U.S. Open and everything that's come since. It's hard to imagine.
In this installment of The Americans in Pinehurst Series, Matt, Fred and I discuss the new Southern Pines Golf Club experience. In the hands of a new ownership group, which also owns nearby Pine Needles and Mid Pines golf course resorts, Southern Pines has undergone a significant renovation and restoration effort from noted architect Kyle…
The Carolina Hickory Golf Association is dedicated to preserving the traditions of the ancient game of golf. Conceived in 2004, and formalized in 2005, it is one of the first—if not THE first—regional hickory golf association in the United States. The fortunate few who call the Carolinas their home know what it's like to play on sandy soil with whispering pines and a layer or two to keep the morning chill from your shoulders. I would argue—as I believe Donald Ross must have—it is one of the most ideal places in all of North America for the sport. CHGA grew from the legendary origins of the Mid Pines Hickory Open. In fact, the pro at Mid Pines was a co-founder of the Association, and is a guest in this episode. It was a treat to spend some time with founding captain "Lang Willie" Engelson, current captain Richard Schmidt, and PGA professional, Rob Pilewski. We spoke of their evolution, their association with LPGA member and World Golf Hall of Fame inductee, Peggy Kirk Bell, the estimable contributions of Jay Harris, Frank Boumphrey, and so much more. When a guest in the Carolinas, you're treated right. These three exemplify this culture and are a credit to the growth of hickory golf in the United States.
