In Part 2 of Episode 30 I'm joined by a pair of Tim's...Simpson and Gaestel. Tim Simpson is known for being one of the all-time great ball strikers. He won 5 times on the PGA Tour, had 82 Top 10s, and the GOAT Jack Nicklaus even marveled at how frequently Tim would shoot low scores. Tim has overcome several physical ailments throughout his playing career. He won Comeback Player of the Year on the PGA and Champions tours. He beat Lyme disease and now he's battling a rare form of blood cancer. You'll hear how his positive attitude is going to lead him to beating it plus his thoughts on the PGA Championship, his relationship with his father, how Raymond Floyd intimidated players with his eyes, remembering Payne Stewart's 1999 US Open victory, and working with the great Sam Snead. Tim Gaestel is a former Sergeant with the 82nd Airborne Division of the US Army. As fate would have it, Tim was being sworn into the military on September 11th, 2001. Hear him talk about how that day unfolded and becoming even more driven to charge into the fight. We hear about his deployment to Afghanistan and the IED that exploded and sent shrapnel into his back as he and his peers were headed to Baghdad. Tim also talks about how golf saved his life when he returned home, how the game brought him and his father back together, his experience playing alongside show favorite Scott McCarron, and his fight to save a local municipal course, Lions Municipal Course, in Austin, Texas. 5-27-2023 Passed Ball Show. John talks about Aaron Boone getting thrown out of baseball games and wonders if he is overdoing it because the MLB manager has such limited responsibility in regards to impacting the game. John believes a digital strikezone in some form (perhaps through instant replay) is coming to MLB soon. John hopes the corrected ball/strike calls can be as instantaneously put into play as we see with our own eyes through the MLB.com app. John shares his excitement over the fact that catcher's cheating (he means “framing”) will become a thing of the past once a digital strikezone (replay or otherwise) is implemented. John then talks about the once 3-0 series deficit the Boston Celtics faced and why it seems like they can pull it off with a game six (6) victory in Miami against the Heat. John believes whomever wins Game 6 will win the series and if Boston takes this game, they will not only win Game 7 in Boston, but sweep the NBA Finals against the Denver Nuggets. John then speaks of a similar possibility happening in Dallas, as a Game Five (5) victory in Las Vegas, as a win sets them up for the return of their suspended Captain Jamie Benn with the potential game being played on the Stars home ice. During today's #savingsportshistory segment, John talks about Dan McGann, Carl Hubbell, George Halas, the Indy 500, Sam Snead, Walt Kiesling, Jackie Slater, Frank Thomas, Frant Grant, Ezzard Charles, Maurice Richard, Bill Buckner, and Craig “Iron Head” Heyward.

For this mid-week PGA Championship episode, we go back to 1938, when the tournament was still a match-play competition. In that year's final match, a 26-year-old Sam Snead, one of the most imposing ball-strikers the game has ever seen, faced off against the diminutive, short-hitting Paul Runyan. What happened that day is at the heart of Little Poison, John Dechant's new biography of Runyan. John joins Garrett to discuss Runyan's hardscrabble childhood, unusual playing style, short-game genius, success on the Depression-era PGA Tour, and showdown with Slammin' Sammy in 1938. Nick O'Hern and Mark Allen are back with another episode of Talk Birdie To Me, and it starts with a disagreement. Mark loves the matchplay when there is World Cup style groups prior to the Top 16, Nick isn't a fan and prefers 1v1. Ironically, Mark reckons Nick is the reason why it is the way it is given he knocked out Tiger twice.Oh they don't get to that until after a bit of chardonnay chat. Ridiculous. This golf podcast is going downhill fast. But back to the golf, and it's all about The Masters. The boys are excited about the results of the matchplay - in particular, from an Aussie perspective, Jason Day's performance. Mark asks Nick if Jason can win The Masters, and if he is mentally capable of winning. They boys discuss. From a guy who has played the course, Nick outlines the hardest walk on the course - it may not be the one you'd expect. Mark talks about the involvement of Annika Sörenstam, he's a fan and reckons it's wonderful. Nick loves the ceremonial aspect of the event, and Mark tells a great story about meeting the legendary Sam Snead - a hilarious story about Sam being tanked in the bar at The Masters. Mark is excited about Justice Bosio and asks Nick if she were to win would that be back page on every paper in the country? It should be.We've got feedback asking Nick and Mark about Cam Young from the weekend. The boys discuss. Moves into a discussion about line of sight relief and disqualifications - Nick tells a great story about abusing rules officials from Wayne Riley - very funny. We get an update on Mark's performance in the Pro Am at Box Hill last week, where he had predicted he'd shoot a 64 or 65. Spoiler alert, he didn't. But Jay Mackenzie shot a 61 to win. What a performance! And we get an update on Nick's Pro Am performance at Eynesbury at the weekend. This leads to a chat about Graham Marsh and his secret career, he's a golf legend, and also from a famous sporting family. Mark wants to get him on to chat about his career, and that sets some homework for Nick to arrange.Mark's Top 5 is a cracker. This week it's the Top 5 things that amateur golfers do, copying from pro's, that they shouldn't. And this leads to Mark's Masterclass this week, which is on maths, okay not quite, but sort of. Mark talks about using the aim line on your ball from 30+ feet, and he's going to use maths to prove that you shouldn't do it and it's a waste of time. On the aim line on your ball, Nick gives Mark a different idea on how to do it - which Mark has never done.Nick talks us through the results this week. Matt Wallace wins on the DP World Tour, not a great week for the Aussies at the Puntacana Championship in the Caribbean. In the Asian tour, Travis Smythe has won a spot in the Open after his Hong Kong performance. And Gabi Ruffles with another strong performance, not a win, but a strong performance. Locally the Women's NSW Open in Foster/Tuncurry with a great win from Kiwi Momoka Kobori, and this week....what a week coming up....The National, the final event on the PGA Tour of Australasia, and Nick and Mark are commentating on Kayo/Fox Sports, and Nick is playing the Pro Am with Elvis Smylie.Talk Birdie To Me, new episodes weekly wherever you get your podcasts. If you've got a friend who is into golf, we'd love you to share the podcast with them, and rate and review us wherever you get your podcasts. There are four major tournaments in golf: The Masters, The US Open, The British Open and The PGA. Most of us aspire to go and watch one of these tournaments, to simply to get to SEE the likes of a Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson or Justin Thomas today, Jack Nicholson, Arnold Palmer in past eras and names like Ben Hogan and Sam Snead in the history books. For most professional golfers, the dream of playing in one of these tournaments resides far out of reach. For Montauk native Paul Dickinson, that dream came true last year when he qualified for, and played in, the PGA Championship at Southern Hills Country Club in Tulsa, Oklahoma. The road to the PGA was not a straight one, and with a family and a full time job that's not playing the Pro Tour, it was about as hard as it could be. But he did it. Join Paul and me as he recounts the long, seemingly impossible journey from playing with cut-off clubs at Montauk Downs, to the highest ranks of professional golf.

Tom Patri shares his thoughts on some of the all-time great swings, players like Sam Snead, Fred Couples, Tom Weiskopf, Tom Purtzer, and Adam Scott. On the opposite side of that coin, Tom talks about how you go about fixing it when a player with an unorthodox swing starts to struggle. I also get Tom's thoughts on Sergio withdrawing from the BMW Championship and showing up on the sidelines at the Texas/Alabama game. Harvey Brownstone conducts an in-depth interview with Legendary Actor, Producer and Author, Robert Wagner About Harvey's guest: Robert Wagner is one of the most popular and successful stars in the entertainment industry, boasting three hit television series and an impressive list of both feature and television films.  He has acted in over 100 films and made hundreds of television appearances in his 70+ year career.   As a young man under contract to 20th Century Fox, Robert Wagner was cast by Darryl F. Zanuck in With a Song in My Heart. Although the part lasted a scant minute, his performance as a crippled soldier responding to the song of Susan Hayward's Jane Froman brought immediate public reaction to the studio. Spencer Tracy saw his performance in Beneath the Twelve Mile Reef and requested Wagner for the role of his son in Broken Lance. Tracy was so impressed with Wagner, he cast him again as his brother in The Mountain. A small sample of Wagner's numerous film credits includes Dragon: The Bruce Lee Story, The Pink Panther, The Curse of the Pink Panther, Midway, The Towering Inferno, Banning, Harper, Prince Valiant, The True Story of Jesse James, and All the Fine Young Cannibals. He starred with Joanne Woodward in her film debut, A Kiss Before Dying.  Antonio Banderas directed Wagner in Crazy in Alabama.  In the 1990s, he was introduced to a new legion of fans with the role of Number Two, the villainous henchman to Dr. Evil, the archenemy of Mike Myers' title character in the Austin Powers trilogy.  On television, Wagner starred in three long-running series.  He was nominated for an Emmy for his role as suave cat-burglar Alexander Mundy in It Takes a Thief with Malachi Throne and Fred Astaire.  He portrayed con man-turned-detective Pete Ryan in Switch with Eddie Albert and Sharon Gless.  And Wagner became a fan favorite as the debonair and charming millionaire/amateur detective Jonathan Hart in Hart to Hart with Stefanie Powers. Other illustrious television performances include starring with Jaclyn Smith in the top-rated miniseries, Windmills of the Gods — based on Sidney Sheldon's best-selling novel; Angie Dickinson in the miniseries Pearl; Audrey Hepburn in Love Among Thieves; Lesley Anne Down in Indiscreet; and Elizabeth Taylor in There Must Be a Pony, which he also executive-produced. He appeared alongside such notable names as Philip Casnoff, Kyle Chandler, Cathy Lee Crosby, Leslie-Ann Down, and Billy Dee Williams in North and South: Book 3, Heaven and Hell.  Sir Laurence Olivier chose Wagner to star with him in the television adaptation of Cat on a Hot Tin Roof.  Wagner's wife, the late Natalie Wood, co-starred with them. In addition to his film and television ventures, Robert toured the world performing in A.R. Gurney's Love Letters with Stefanie Powers.  They were the first to launch the tour internationally. After his tour with Powers ended, Wagner enjoyed the play so much, he continued performing it at charity events and around the world with his wife, actress Jill St. John. Away from the acting world, Robert Wagner has long been a fan of golf and boasted a five handicap. He once beat professional golfer  Sam Snead in a head-to-head competition.  Footage of this win is posted in the Video section of this page under Additional Videos.  For more interviews and podcasts go to: https://www.harveybrownstoneinterviews.com/https://www.robert-wagner.com/ https://www.facebook.com/groups/277363364879/ https://www.instagram.com/robertwagnerofficial/#RobertWagner    #harveybrownstoneinterviews

36 times Lloyd Mangrum collected the winner's check on the PGA TOUR. He set the course record at The Masters. Won the U.S. Open in 1946 (almost won it again in 1950, but lost in the famous playoff to Ben Hogan). Twice he finished third in the PGA. Twice he finished second at The Masters. He was the TOUR's leading money winner in 1951 and won the Vardon Trophy twice (1951 and 1953). He was inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame in 1998. Yet, after he retired from the game, many of the newer generation of golfers (1990s), guys who knew Hogan, Byron Nelson, Sam Snead, golfers whom Mangrum competed with and beat, were asked about Mangrum and they didn't know who he was. Incredible. Mangrum had an illustrious career. In addition to all the aforementioned facts, he also played on four Ryder Cup teams, was the team's playing captain in 1953 and compiled an overall record of 6-2-0. How can he be forgotten? Off the course, Mangrum was the recipient of two Silver Stars, two Bronze Stars and two Purple Hearts and was a Staff Sergeant in the Army during World War II. Lloyd Mangrum was not boisterous. His nickname, "The Icicle", represented his steely mannerisms on the golf course. he was tough. He was focused. He was great. On this episode of Sports' Forgotten Heroes, golf writer and author, Peter May, whose recent book, "The Open Question" from Rowman and Littlefield is a must-read for all fans of the sport, joins the podcast for an in-depth discussion about a golfer whom time has forgotten, but whose accomplishments deserve significantly more recognition.
