Summary Amy introduces Dr. Adam Rosen, an orthopedic surgeon and author of "OR Confidential: Confessions of a Gen X Surgeon," highlighting the book's exploration of the challenges and mental health struggles faced by physicians, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic. She emphasizes the book's relevance to both medical professionals and patients seeking to understand the physician's journey, its consequences, and recovery . 00:00:02 Dr. Rosen shares his lifelong aspiration to become an orthopedic surgeon, detailing his training and career until his mental health crisis in 2023, which led to a year-long absence from work. He reflects on the initial desire to help people that drives many into medicine, contrasting it with the systemic pressures that erode empathy and compassion over time . 00:01:38 The discussion shifts to the impact of COVID-19 on surgical teams and patient care. Dr. Rosen describes the efficiency and synergy of his pre-COVID team, where experienced members anticipated his needs, leading to streamlined procedures. He contrasts this with the challenges of working with traveling staff during the pandemic, who, despite being highly paid, lacked familiarity with the hospital's systems and procedures, causing frustration among permanent staff . 00:04:47 Dr. Rosen elaborates on the emotional toll of striving for perfection in an environment of constant staffing and supply chain issues. He recounts his hypervigilant state, driven by the need to ensure optimal patient care amidst systemic challenges, which ultimately led to his mental health breakdown. He also mentions a quote in his book from the Hip and Knee Society about the high percentage of doctors still facing supply chain and staffing issues years after COVID . 00:08:57 Dr. Rosen describes the red flags he missed leading up to his breakdown, including chronic sleep deprivation, increased alcohol consumption, cessation of exercise and meditation, and social withdrawal. He acknowledges the feeling of being trapped by financial obligations and professional responsibilities, which prevented him from addressing his deteriorating mental health . 00:11:17 Dr. Rosen recounts the events leading to his breakdown, triggered by a combination of hospital issues, electronic medical record stress, insurance demands, a patient complication, and a lawsuit. He describes waking up one Friday unable to get out of bed, experiencing a sense of detachment at work, and ultimately being unable to move, leading to a three-week period of isolation . 00:14:34 Dr. Rosen reflects on a prior panic attack, which he initially dismissed, and contrasts it with the overwhelming fear and inability to function that characterized his breakdown. He credits his wife and therapist for intervening and initiating his treatment, highlighting the importance of support systems and access to mental healthcare . 00:18:43 Dr. Rosen discusses his experience with psychiatric treatment, including medication and an intensive outpatient program involving cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and group therapy. He describes the challenges of accepting the healthcare system's limitations while striving for optimal patient care, and the difficulty of admitting the need for help due to stigma . 00:26:26 Dr. Rosen emphasizes the importance of continuous self-assessment and seeking help, recounting how sharing his experiences has become easier over time. He notes the surprising number of older colleagues who have privately struggled with similar issues, underscoring the prevalence of mental health challenges in the medical profession . 00:35:06 Dr. Rosen details the tools and strategies he has adopted to manage his mental health, including mindfulness meditation, regular exercise, nutritious eating, social interaction, and creative outlets like writing and YouTube. He shares a personal anecdote about reframing frustrating situations by rewarding himself with a treat, illustrating his approach to managing stress . 00:36:50 Dr. Rosen discusses the principles of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), including identifying and challenging negative core beliefs and cognitive distortions. He recounts his experience in group therapy, where he had to confront his belief that he was a failure and reframe his narrative . 00:41:16 Dr. Rosen describes his current activities, including his YouTube channel, which provides information and support to patients undergoing knee replacement surgery. He also mentions his plans to resume work on a fictional medical crime thriller . 00:50:24 Amy commends Dr. Rosen for his openness and advocacy, highlighting the value of his resources for patients and healthcare professionals. She also acknowledges the unique challenges faced by female surgeons and expresses appreciation for initiatives supporting them . 00:54:51 Chapter Introduction to Dr. Adam Rosen and His Book 00:00:02 Amy introduces Dr. Adam Rosen, highlighting his book "OR Confidential: Confessions of a Gen X Surgeon," which explores the mental health challenges faced by physicians, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic. This week in Sea of Thieves, there's not much news to cover so I take some time to talk about some of the things I think could use a refresh. No surprise for folks who listen to the show but it's about UI. Commendations need to have an overhaul on where they're located and how they should be labeled. I also go into some thoughts about the QA for the game and some concerns I have as a result of chatting with DavrimTV from Pirate Talk Radio. Letters From Jesus: Revelation 2-3

In this sermon, Pastor Chris Romig delves into Revelation chapters two and three, focusing on the seven letters from Jesus to the churches in Ephesus, Smyrna, Pergamum, Thyatira, Sardis, Philadelphia, and Laodicea. These often-overlooked letters, historically distributed across present-day Turkey, contain Jesus' commendations, criticisms, commands, and promises, which Chris notes are just as relevant today as they were back then. Chris emphasizes that these messages serve as a wake-up call for modern churches to maintain purity and doctrinal integrity against contemporary threats. By comparing these letters to Paul's New Testament epistles, he underscores their enduring relevance and applicability. The sermon concludes with a prayer for openness to God's word, encouraging believers to grow through Jesus' loving guidance.

And all the churches will know that I am he who searches mind and heart, and I will give to each of you according to your works. 24 But to the rest of you in Thyatira, who do not hold this teaching, who have not learned what some call the deep things of Satan, to you I say, I do not lay on you any other burden. 25 Only hold fast what you have until I come. 26 The one who conquers and who keeps my works until the end, to him I will give authority over the nations, 27 and he will rule them with a rod of iron, as when earthen pots are broken in pieces, even as I myself have received authority from my Father. 28 And I will give him the morning star. 29 He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches.' The economic case for a second longevity revolution, with Andrew Scott

The public discussion in a number of countries around the world expresses worries about what is called an aging society. These countries anticipate a future with fewer younger people who are active members of the economy, and a growing number of older people who need to be supported by the people still in the workforce. It's an inversion of the usual demographic pyramid, with less at the bottom, and more at the top. However, our guest in this episode recommends a different framing of the future – not as an aging society, but as a longevity society, or even an evergreen society. He is Andrew Scott, Professor of Economics at the London Business School. His other roles include being a Research Fellow at the Centre for Economic Policy Research, and a consulting scholar at Stanford University's Center on Longevity.Andrew's latest book is entitled “The Longevity Imperative: Building a Better Society for Healthier, Longer Lives”. Commendations for the book include this from the political economist Daron Acemoglu, “A must-read book with an important message and many lessons”, and this from the historian Niall Ferguson, “Persuasive, uplifting and wise”. Selected follow-ups:Personal website of Andrew ScottAndrew Scott at the London Business SchoolThe book The Longevity Imperative: How to Build a Healthier and More Productive Society to Support Our Longer LivesLongevity, the 56 trillion dollar opportunity, with Andrew Scott - episode 40 in this seriesPopulation Pyramids of the World from 1950 to 2100Thomas Robert Malthus - WikipediaDALYs (Disability-adjusted life years) and QALYs (Quality-adjusted life years) - WikipediaVSL (Value of Statistical Life) - WikipediaThe economic value of targeting aging - paper in Nature Aging, co-authored by Andrew Scott, Martin Ellison, and David SinclairA great-grandfather from Merseyside has become the world's oldest living man - BBC, 5th April 2024Related quotations:Aging is "...revealed and made manifest only by the most unnatural experiment of prolonging an animal's life by sheltering it from the hazards of its ordinary existence" - Peter Medawar, 1951"To die of old age is a death rare, extraordinary, and singular, and, therefore, so much less natural than the others; 'tis the last and extremest sort of dying: and the more remote, the less to be hoped for" - Michel de Montaigne, 1580Music: Spike Protein, by Koi Discovery, available under CC0 1.0 Public Domain DeclarationThe Neil Ashton PodcastThis podcast focuses on explaining the fascinating ways that science and engineering...Listen on: Apple Podcasts Spotify

Join us in the latest episode of A to Z Golfing Podcast where we host a Swag Series event and enjoy the breathtaking views at Hammock Beach. Commendations to Danny Hughes and his amazing team at Hammock Beach Resort on the Ocean Course, who put up quite a venue. With top-notch lunch services, vendor support, and excellent coordination, the event ranks high on our list. We talk about Kevin Lewis, a long-time visitor at the place, who, fortunately, found some time to participate in our event with his partner TyCapps. This team played exceptionally well and won the gross division with a final score of minus four.  And we can't forget the nail-biting playoff which left us at the edge of our seats. Three teams went head to head in an alternate shot which was won by last year's Swag Series National champions, Dustin and Spencer Dingus. All 3 teams were fantastic golfers and it was a pleasure to watch them play. We also had amazing interactions with some vendors, including Vienna Beef (Chicago-style hot dog), Titos Liquid Death, E-Z-Go and more. We also spent time with First Tee, which was an amazing experience.
