In today's episode, you'll learn: Why "aim small, miss small" may not always serve you in golf (this part of the conversation fascinated me!) The role of presence and adaptability in your pre-shot routine. How to reframe failure to build confidence and momentum. Why focusing too much on your full swing may be holding you back. Presence Over Perfection: Your pre-shot routine should anchor you in the moment without rigid repetition that leads to overthinking. Expand Your Target, Reduce Your Stress: Instead of aiming for tiny, high-pressure targets, widen your focus to reduce anxiety and stay fluid. Short Game is Key: Invest more time in improving your shots within 100 yards—it's the quickest way to lower your score. Fairway Bunker Practice: Practicing in fairway bunkers improves your contact and ball striking on grass significantly. Daily Confidence Deposits: Revisit your best shots and great rounds to build belief in your abilities, especially after mistakes. Let Play Be Your Teacher: Approach practice with curiosity and experimentation rather than fear of mistakes. Key Quotes: "Your goal is to make the current shot as great as you possibly can." "Consistency is not achievable—progress is."  "Your pre-shot routine should help you flow, not control."  "Hitting a bad shot doesn't mean you're broken."  "Lay your head on the pillow and replay your great holes."  "The ball isn't your bullseye—the ground in front of it is."  "You're practicing something every time you play—make sure it's helpful self-talk."    Time Stamps: 00:00 The Power of Presence in Golf 02:57 Developing a Pre-Shot Routine 06:02 The Myth of Consistency in Golf 09:00 Understanding Pressure Points for Golfers 11:51 The Importance of Short Game 15:04 Rethinking Target Selection 17:57 The Role of Play in Learning 20:54 Embracing Imperfection in Golf 26:44 Embracing Failure as a Learning Tool 31:17 Shifting Mindsets in Golf Instruction 36:05 The Importance of Ground Contact in Golf 41:34 Building Confidence Through Positive Reinforcement

If you're interested in learning more about how mindset coaching and hypnotherapy can help you get unstuck from the proverbial bunker of poor performance on the course and in your business, click here to schedule a coaching discovery call with me.  Key Points: Simplifying the short game involves managing expectations and focusing on technique. Many golfers have unrealistic expectations based on professional highlights. The yips can stem from both physical flaws and mental fears. Proper grip and setup are crucial for successful putting. Club-focused instruction aligns with how the brain learns motor skills. Slow motion practice can help identify and correct swing issues. Strategic pauses in the swing can prevent manipulation of the club. Becoming a scratch golfer requires significant time and dedication. Coaching should prioritize understanding the person behind the golfer. Key Quotes: “I believe that the improvement you make and the goals you achieve in golf will reflect the time and effort you commit to the game.” “Focus on what you want to do as opposed to what you fear might happen.” “The difference between a scratch golfer and others is the amount of time they spend playing and practicing the game.” “Most players have too high of expectations, thinking they should make all their putts within 10 feet or hit it close with a wedge every time. Tempering expectations reduces stress and allows you to play more freely.” “Slow-motion swings can help you identify whether you're executing correctly. In golf, where precision matters, slowing down can make all the difference in building a repeatable and effective swing.” Subscribe to the More Pars Than Bogeys Newsletter. Transform Your Golf Game: Unlocking Power, Perfecting Swing Sequence, and Mastering the Short Game

(00:01) Power and Putting in Golf This chapter explores the fundamentals of generating power in a golf swing, focusing on the crucial role of ground force. We examine how energy originates from our interaction with the ground and is transferred through our bodies to enhance swing speed. Through practical examples, like push-ups and spinning in a chair, we illustrate how pushing into an immovable object—like the ground—creates propulsion. We clarify misconceptions about timing, emphasizing that many golfers apply this force too late in their swings, reducing effectiveness. Insights from recent power schools highlight how understanding and timing ground force correctly can lead to improved swing performance and lower scores. (14:41) Golf Swing Sequencing Tools and Tips This chapter focuses on the importance of proper sequencing in a golf swing and how common issues can arise when the arms move faster than the torso. To address this, we explore simple and accessible tools to improve swing sequencing. We emphasize the benefits of using a rope to practice swings, as it naturally encourages the correct sequence from the lower body to the torso and arms, unlike other tools that allow for pushing. Additionally, we introduce a homemade device made from PVC pipe and a swim noodle to enhance the traditional method of using a club across the shoulders. This innovative tool provides comfort and a springy effect to help golfers rotate their chest effectively without discomfort. Through these practical solutions, we aim to help golfers achieve a more synchronized and powerful swing. (26:07) Improving Distance With Tour Striker This chapter highlights the importance of not just clubhead speed but also ball speed, spin, and launch angle in achieving greater distance in golf. We emphasize that striking the center of the clubface is crucial, as faster clubhead speed is ineffective if the ball is hit poorly. I introduce the Tour Striker club, designed by Martin Chuck, which helps golfers improve their striking by ensuring proper contact and de-lofting, resulting in better launch angles and smash factors. We also discuss how newer golf clubs might offer more forgiveness, but ultimately, skill in hitting the ball correctly remains key to maximizing distance. By practicing with specialized training tools and focusing on proper technique, anyone can improve their golf game and hit the ball farther without relying solely on the latest club technology. (35:43) Mastering Short Game and Putting This chapter explores the intricacies of improving short game performance in golf, particularly focusing on the importance of mastering wedge shots and putting techniques. We discuss how honing wedge shots can lead to better performance with longer irons, emphasizing the same fundamental principles. The conversation highlights common pitfalls in putting, such as overactive wrists and poor grip, which often lead to missed shots. I share insights on calming the wrists and achieving a more stable stroke by adjusting the grip to fit natural arm positions, thus minimizing face twists. Additionally, we address the debate over whether putting strokes should be straight back and through or arcing, clarifying that it can be a combination of both, depending on individual technique and putter design. (45:14) Improving Pitching Leads to Successful 5-Iron This chapter shares an anecdote about the significant improvements in golf skills, particularly in pitching, following Jeff's guidance. I recount how, despite previous struggles with the 5-iron, applying Jeff's advice on improving wedge shots has translated into better performance across other clubs. I describe a moment of success when hitting a 168-yard shot onto the green with the 5-iron, a club that had remained unused all season. The experience highlights the broader impact of honing specific skills on overall gameplay.

Meet Melvin Beard a 30-year Golf Professional, Certified Level II Science in Motion Instructor, Certified Adaptive Golf Coach, and Certified Golf Mental Coach. Oh, he's also a four-handicap with eight hole in ones. Evenmore, he also happens to be that guy who gave me unsolicited swing advice one Friday morning, spent 30 minutes working with me (because he's that type of guy), and the same Coach Melvin I ended up hiring a few weeks later to help me achieve my goal of becoming a scratch golfer.  In today's episode, you'll learn: What Man Theory is - and why it's ruining your performance. The power, importance, and need to prioritize the correct grip of the golf club.  How to augment your practice to produce confidence and better results. How to use your entire body to facilitate more power and distance in your swing. Why the mental game matters when it comes to finding focus, flow, and attention to detail in each aspect of the game. What to focus on to be a significantly better putter And much more. Get your pencils ready and start listening.  More About Melvin Melvin C.Beard lll is the CEO and Owner of A-Swing Golf Academy. He's been a Golf Professional for over 30 years and holds numerous certifications and credentials, including Certified Level II Science in Motion Instructor, Certified Adaptive Golf Coach, and Certified Golf Mental Coach. He's also a First Tee Youth Program Lead Coach. Key Takeaways: Golf is predominantly a mental game, comprising 98% mental and 2% physical. Grip and equipment play a significant role in a golfer's success. 'Man theory' can hinder a golfer's performance and should be avoided. Golfers should focus on their own game rather than comparing themselves to others. There is no single solution to improving your golf game. Many golfers mimic what they see on TV without understanding the process. Having a short memory is vital for maintaining confidence in golf. Taking notes during lessons can significantly enhance learning and retention. Finding a coach who emphasizes mental and physical aspects of the game is important. Key Quotes: "This game is 98% mental." “You gotta build from success that you have each single time for them to be able to kind of check it because soon as they're mental, as soon as it comes out their mouth, your ears are recording basically of I stink. I this - this happened.” "Pressure busts pipes, but pressure also makes diamonds." “If you can aim at something small, you can hit something small. I think that was the Little Red Book. And in that small tee going in the ground, you push it all the way down into the ground. So it's like you're hitting the ball off the ground, but you actually now you have a little target.” “As long as you can feel that target, you have to listen to your hands and understand your hands are the only thing that's grip that's a vice on the actual golf club. So if your grip is wrong your swing is wrong. It's that simple.” Subscribe to the More Pars Than Bogeys Newsletter. We've received so many great questions about improving our short game that we decided to answer 4 more questions in a full episode.   This was originally a Members Only episode that lived behind our paywall, so this is the first time it's ever been shared publically. Questions:Matthew Etter of Durham, NC: What is the recommended approach for handling "flier" lies around the green? In my area we have a lot of bermuda grasses, and when cut high there can be a lot of space between the ball and the ground. Should you still try to hit down on the ball to impart spin? It seems to me that there's no way you're going to compress the ball when it's sitting up so much, but trying to scoop the ball with an ascending blow doesn't seem like the right approach either. Any alternatives?Matt McElroy of Brentwood, NH: How do we know which scoring club to use from the sand? Are different types of sand a factor?Ron Hampel of Portland, OR I'm fairly new to golf, having taken up the game about 18 months ago. My play from tee to about 120 yards or so is really coming along (around 70-75% driving accuracy). But, what's holding my scoring back is what happens from inside 120 or so yards. My short game distance control is all over the place. Why will adding a wedge or two to my set at that end make my distances any more accurate? In other words, is my lack of consistency due to the skills of someone new to the game or incorrect club gaps?Martin Baker of Peregian Beach, Queensland Australia i still use your old wedges and listened intently to the podcast especially around the grip. I sent a photo of my glove - from the photo you may be able to work out am I holding the club too much in my hand instead of my fingers as you advocate? I was also intrigued by your comments about keeping the grip light on the club - I think this would naturally relax the forearms and therefore give a more relaxed looking swing like the professionals?Follow @golfsmarter on Instagram, X, Facebook, TikTok, YouTube for daily highlights and helpful insights from our interviews on the podcast. (00:00) Improving Golf Scoring Techniques This chapter is all about improving your golf scoring by mastering the ups and downs of the short game. Jeff Smith, a Golf Magazine Top 100 teacher, explains the importance of having two key shots: the firm-handed scrape (or bump and run) and understanding how to position yourself on different slopes. We explore how to maintain a stable base on various terrains, focusing on the importance of aligning your shoulders with the slope and adjusting your posture before determining the length of the club. Jeff emphasizes the significance of balance and stability, especially when dealing with upslopes around the greens, to ensure precise and predictable shots. (13:39) Effective Short Game Techniques This chapter delves into the nuances of controlling hand and wrist movements in various activities, such as tossing a tennis or golf ball, throwing a dart, or shaking hands. We explore the concept of maintaining a balance between being too loose and too stiff, emphasizing the importance of the "Goldilocks zone"—a middle ground where movements are neither too rigid nor too floppy. By examining how this principle applies to golf, particularly in shots like the "firm-handed scrape" or "bump and run," we discuss how to achieve a stable and balanced setup. This approach helps to avoid common pitfalls like thin and fat shots, resulting in more consistent, crisp contact. The importance of prioritizing balance, club length, and ball position is also highlighted as key factors for successful execution. (23:57) Mastering Golf Short Game Techniques This chapter focuses on the techniques required to execute precise short game shots around the greens, especially from challenging lies like bunkers or slopes. We explore the critical concepts of establishing a stable base by planting the downhill leg firmly and matching the shoulder line to the slope. Two primary shot techniques are discussed: the firm-handed scrape and the hinge and thump. The hinge and thump shot involves hinging the wrists to get the club vertical on the takeaway and then unhinging to thump the ground at the lowest point of the swing, typically near the front hip joint. This technique allows the ball to pop up softly, making it ideal for high, soft shots like lobs or flops. We emphasize the importance of ensuring the club gets below the ball, whether in grass or sand, to achieve the desired shot outcome. (34:12) Enhancing Putting Skills for Lower Scores This chapter is all about improving your golf score by focusing on two lifesaver shots—the firm-wristed scrape shot and the hinge and thump shot—and honing your putting skills beyond just stroke technique. We emphasize the importance of speed control, advocating for putts that stop just past the hole to avoid negative feedback from missed putts. By practicing putting to the fringe, golfers can develop better distance control without the discouragement of missed holes. We also explore the importance of aiming and consistent putting mechanics, suggesting drills like hitting the flagstick from two feet away to ensure straight putts. Finally, we discuss effective green reading techniques, highlighting the importance of keeping your eyes level to accurately assess the tilt of the green. (42:55) Improving Green Reading Techniques This chapter emphasizes the importance of holistic green reading in golf, particularly using the Aimpoint method. We explore the necessity of assessing the entire terrain between the ball and the hole, not just the immediate ground. By reading with your feet and feeling the slope through various parts of your body—legs, hips, torso, and overall body lean—you can gain a better understanding of the green. We address common resistance to this method and explain how defending ineffective green-reading techniques can hinder improvement. For those seeking to lower their golf scores, adopting this approach is crucial. A reference to a previous detailed episode on this topic is also mentioned for further learning.

Meet Chris Ardolina - a multi-award-winning teaching professional at Cove Cay Golf Club in Clearwater, Florida. Chris became a scratch golfer at - wait for it - the age of 14. After deciding not to pursue professional golf, he decided to give teaching a go. He immediately fell in love with it and the rest is history. In today's episode, you'll learn: How to identify the root cause of your struggles AND develop an effective practice plan to overcome them. How to infuse both intention and purpose into your practice sessions to accelerate results.  How to approach the mental and physical aspects of your warm-up and what differes compared to when you practice. The three-step accelerated improvement framework Chris uses with all of his clients to meet them where they're at and get them to where they want to be - fast.  Plus, Chris shared the top priority to focus on when you're trying to break 90, break 80, and shoot scratch. Get your pencils ready and start listening.  More About Chris Chris grew up in central New Jersey and started playing golf at the age of 12. By age 14, he started shooting "par" at his local public course and earned recognition as one of the top junior golfers in the area. Throughout high school, Chris played 4 years of varsity golf, and his 9-hole score of 3 under par 33 remains tied for the lowest in school history. Chris's pursuit of a golf-focused career led him to Methodist University in Fayetteville, North Carolina where he majored in Business Administration with a concentration in Professional Golf Management. After graduating, he embarked on a journey with the Jim McLean Golf Schools in Miami, Florida, where his passion for teaching blossomed.  He now owns and operates the Chris Ardolina Golf Academy out of Cove Cay Golf Club located in Clearwater, Florida.  Beyond golf, Chris finds joy in playing ice hockey, tennis, yoga and biking along the scenic Tampa/Clearwater trails.  Teaching Accolades:  2021-24 Golf Digest Best Young Teachers In America  2024 NFPGA West Central Chapter Youth Player Development Awar 2022-23 GRAA Top 100 Growth of the Game Teaching Professional 2023 NFPGA West Central Chapter Teacher of the Year  Connect with Chris: Website: www.chrisardolinagolf.com Instagram: @ardogolf  Youtube: @christopherardolina7330 Key Takeaways: Identify the root causes of your struggles in golf to develop effective practice plans. Practice with intention and purpose, starting with small drills and gradually progressing to more challenging exercises. Create a focused warm-up routine to bring confidence and clarity to the first tee. Follow a three-step process for improvement: understand the current state, identify areas for improvement, and implement changes. As you progress in golf, shift your focus to more specific aspects of the game. Consistency is key for golfers looking to break 100. Eliminating big numbers and focusing on reducing penalty shots can lead to significant improvement. To break 90, golfers should work on their approach shots and aim for consistent distance control. Being able to get close to the green and give themselves a chance to make par or bogey is crucial. Breaking 80 requires hitting more greens and having a solid short game. Golfers should aim to make more pars and reduce the number of putts. Becoming a scratch golfer involves paying attention to the details and making good decisions on the course. Strategy and course management become more important at this level. Playing in tournaments requires practicing under pressure and being familiar with the rules. Many golfers struggle in tournaments because they are not used to playing with the same level of pressure and adherence to rules. Key Quotes: "You can go from hip high to shoulder to full swing all within that singular practice session" "I want you to take one to two practice swings for every ball that you hit" "The biggest thing that can help them create consistency and help them lose less golf balls or take less penalty shots." "Breaking 90 comes down to a lot of approach shots and consistent distance control." "To break 80, you need to hit more greens and have a solid short game." What a fun episode we have today with Evan Singer and Matt Cermak from The Par Train podcast joining us. We are filling you in on 5 ways you can be miserable on the golf course – this is a must-listen! Key Highlights: Expecting what you do on the range to happen on the course. A warm-up is just that: a warm-up. Your best swing or putt is an outlier, not an average. Trying to shoot your best score. When was the last time you actually shot your best score when you “tried” to shoot your best score? Don't reinvent a past victory. Instead, recommit to earn a new victory. That is, don't look at the finish line. Focus instead on the process—the journey—that will result in a win. Trying to impress others. Since we're only human, we can't help but care what others think; but, when we let the opinions of others influence our performance on the golf course, we end up doing worse than if we just put aside that insecurity. Assume you won't make mistakes. Just because your last round was perfect doesn't mean this round will be perfect. Golf is a game of recovery. Don't get too high, and don't get too low. Take care not to rest on your laurels after every good shot and beat yourself up after every bad shot. If you get too high, you create unnecessary pressure on yourself come the next swing; and if you get too low, you gradually lose the confidence and motivation to go on.   Check out The Par Train here: The Par Train   To join the Desert Classic Interest List, click here.     Don't forget about the T-Time Swag Giveaway!
