Justin Mandon has been a guest on the podcast in the past, and we wanted to bring him back to discuss the reconstruction of the Alister MacKenzie-designed Pasatiempo Golf Club in Santa Cruz, California. This may be one of the best reconstructions we've seen in years, but it was not without its challenges. The work was broken into two parts: the front nine was completed first, and a year later, they worked on the back nine.Justin talks about selecting and testing the greens mix both at the mine and on-site when the mix arrived, along with the challenges he faced there. The front nine did suffer some salt damage that was very difficult to identify. It wasn't the total amount of salt in the water, but rather that the salt was the predominant element, overpowering all others and causing the young seedlings to wilt.He also discusses the EarthWorks amendment package he incorporated into the greens mix, which allowed him to grow the entire project using under three pounds of nitrogen. Restoring the architecture of a classically designed course is different from simply building a modern golf course; it's time-consuming and requires meticulous attention to detail to preserve the original MacKenzie layout. Justin and his architect, Jim Urbina, accomplished that and then some.Visit EarthWorks at: https://www.earthworksturf.com Podcasts: https://www.earthworksturf.com/earthworks-podcasts/ 2 Minute Turf Talks: https://www.earthworksturf.com/2-minute-turf-talks/

Doug is the Director of Golf at Titirangi Golf Club, and has recently been on a trip to the Monterey Peninsula to attend the MacKenzie Gathering at esteemed Cypress Point Golf Club.

Escríbenos un MensajeEn este episodio te contamos nuestros pasatiempos, las cosas que nos apasionan y nos regalan momentos de recarga en nuestras vidas. Como en cada episodio estaremos tomándonos una cerveza, en este caso es la Ponte en Quatro.Recomendaciones de la Semana;

George Waters is originally from Long Island, NY - his first tentative steps into the business of golf were at St. George's Country Club on Long Island where he worked on the greens team during summer breaks. George would go on to work on the maintenance teams at Royal Dornoch, Merion and The California Club. While studying an economics undergraduate degree, George contacted Tom Doak of Renaissance Golf Design who urged him, over an number of years, to travel as widely as possible, gain on-course experience and consider post-graduate study of landscape architecture. While at the University of Guelph George was accepted as an intern with Renaissance Golf Design, this move would ultimately mean exposure to restoration and design/build projects such as Yeaman's Hall, Mid-Ocean, Pasatiempo, Barnbougle Dunes, Rock Creek Cattle Company, Sebonak, The Renaissance Club and the Strand 9 at Rosapenna. George would go on to work on the Coore and Crenshaw restoration at Pinehurst #2, Kyle Philips' historical renovation at The Cal Club and on the reimagining of Mid Pines in conjunction with Kyle Franz. George now works for the USGA Green Section as Education Manager - given the scope of his expereinces to date he is the ideal guest to explore the intersection of golf course design and maintenance. www.georgewatersgolf.com Special Guest: George Waters.
After a recent visit to Pastiempo Golf Club in Santa Cruz, California, Andy Johnson and Garrett Morrison figured it was time to dedicate a full podcast to this brilliant (and publicly accessible!) Alister MacKenzie design. From the underrated front nine to the controversial finishing holes, Andy and Garrett dig into the features that make the course a must-visit for any golfer. They wrap up their chat by turning an eye to the future and discussing their hopes and concerns regarding last week's news that Pasatiempo will undergo major rebuild of its heralded MacKenzie greens.
Keith and J-Teal are back in studio to break down all the week's golf action, including Jordan Spieth's playoff win (PLAYOFFS?!?!?!) over Pat Cantlay at Harbour Town! But to kick things off, J-Teal provides a little teaser of the YSO's upcoming pod mini-series titled "Miles of Maxwell", where the guys interview some golf dignitaries at some of Mr. Maxwell's most iconic course across Oklahoma! Next, the guys breakdown Spieth's win, despite his awful putting; Shane Lowry's "wet" chip; and ol' Tommy-lad putting together a solid weekend for the first time in a while... After that, it's all about college golf where the guys recap the Western Intercollegiate at J-Teal's favorite place, Pasatiempo, and the Sooners' big win in the desert at Papago, a record-tying 5th tourney victory for Coach Hybl's squad! The guys then get into the "Fairway Files", and we check in with a Supercell "major" champion winner, an epic fourball slugfest at Lincoln West, as well a terrific charity event at Oak Tree earlier in the day. And lastly, of course, the guys make their picks for the "fun format" Zurich Championship down in Nawlins this weekend! So Kyle Porter of CBS joins to add some of his perspective from his week on the ground at Augusta National, focusing on the winner, runner-up, Tiger, and other odds and ends from his notebook. Then they get to the shhhedule for the week, where Kyle saddles Andy with a one-and-done pick and there's an amusing tale about Kyle not getting to play Pasatiempo, site of this week's Western Intercollegiate. They close with news, which is on the Shark, Greg Norman, resurfacing with more comments about his impending league and the report of five committed names, including Bubba Watson.

It's surely the cathedral of courses. That church of azaleas at Augusta National has the eyes of the world focused on it this week as The Masters once again gets our seasons under way. It was designed, of course, by Dr Alister MacKenzie, whose incredible body of work also includes those paradise must-play venues of Cypress Point, Pasatiempo and Royal Melbourne. But do you know his first course was much closer to home for us in the UK - in West Yorkshire no less. The original can be found in Leeds, at Alwoodley - a fabulous heathland that's a fixture of both NCG Top 100s England and GB&I lists. So what sets this layout apart and can we find any echoes of Alwoodley in MacKenzie's masterpiece in Georgia? To discuss this wonderful course, and to explore those Augusta links, Dan Murphy and Steve Carroll chatted with Alwoodley course manager Matthew Brighton and consulting architect Clyde Johnson in the first episode of our new series of the NCG Top 100s Podcast.
