Jodi Katz sat down with two powerhouse women making waves in personal health: Taryn Shockley, USA Sales & Education Manager at AlumierMD, and Kelly Murphy, General Manager at Lola. What followed was a deep, human, and often hilarious look at ambition, imposter syndrome, reinvention—and the workouts that keep them grounded.Taryn's story starts on the balance beam. A gymnast from age two, she was competing at elite levels by ten and earned a full ride to ASU. But when an injury ended her collegiate career, she made her first major pivot—into skincare. What began as a passion for facials turned into a sales role that demanded she master the art of influence in highly clinical, physician-led spaces. Today, she's navigating a category that's equal parts science and sales—and getting real about how to stay resilient when your numbers (or your self-worth) are on the line.Meanwhile, Kelly dreamt of being editor-in-chief of Seventeen Magazine—a goal she nearly touched when working at Penguin Books. But the realities of New York rent pushed her into digital marketing, where she built a versatile toolkit across SEO, UX, and data strategy at top agencies like Publicis and Havas. Now, she's steering the ship at Lola, a pioneer in clean period care, and facing challenges every modern marketer knows too well: a saturated market, rising media costs, and a pressing need to evolve the brand story. Her secret weapon? Relationship-building. Whether managing a 20-person team or advocating for upper-funnel investment, Kelly leads with connection—and a healthy dose of what she calls “female rage.”While their paths are wildly different, Taryn and Kelly share a trait we see often in the Where Brains Meet Beauty community: the willingness to leap. Whether it's changing industries, stepping into roles they weren't quite ready for, or pushing back on outdated business norms, both women prove that reinvention isn't just possible—it's powerful. Yes, we had fun. From underwater spin classes to soundscape-enhanced yoga, Taryn and Kelly gave us their go-to workouts and how they use fitness as both therapy and mental reset. (Spoiler: one peed on a trampoline, one has a Fuze House membership in every city.)Their stories are packed with honesty, hustle, and the kind of lessons you only learn by leaping before you're ready.

In this episode, I chat with Nic Russo, the Education Manager for the American River Conservancy (ARC), to explore the significance and impact of environmental education in defining places and our connections to them. While previous episodes have been more focused on conservation and restoration, this discussion pivots to the importance of experiential learning, especially in nature, and how it not only compliments the work of land trusts, but acts as a foundation. We talk about the realities of how limiting such opportunities can turn students into quote unquote robots due to the formulaic, memorization-centric traditional education system in the U.S. We dive into Nic's personal and professional experiences, explaining how exposure to nature and outdoor education shaped his career and views; leading to the basis of his current education philosophy, that understanding and engaging with local nature can foster a lasting appreciation and motivate people to protect it. The episode also delves into the historical context of ARC's education programs and highlights the challenges and aspirations for integrating more outdoor educational experiences into the school curriculum. Ultimately, we arrive to the conclusion that environmental education is the essential component that bridges the efforts of conservation and stewardship, answering the so what or who cares questions that come up in this field of work. Warnings to be careful after a string of fires was linked to lithium-ion batteries. Scrap metal company Sims Metal has been fined $30 thousand over a 2023 fire that released toxic smoke near Ōtāhuhu. A massive blaze at a recycling plant near Glenfield last month was also linked to lithium-ion batteries, as well as a number of fires breaking out in rubbish trucks across the city. Fire and Emergency New Zealand's Community Education Manager Tom Ronaldson told Kerre Woodham that lithium-ion batteries are perfectly safe, as long as they're used correctly. He says you should only be charging devices while you're awake, and unplugged as soon as they're fully charged. LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

I visited Siem Reap, Cambodia many years ago, and have a surface-level understanding of the challenges faced there. Aviv Palti not only visited Siem Reap, but together with his family founded an organisation to help break the poverty cycle in Cambodia through the power of education. Aviv Palti is the CEO of Lifestyle Brands and founder of the Cambodia Rural Students Trust (CRST). The journey started unexpectedly when Aviv's 14-year-old daughter, Steph, was rejected from a school volunteering trip to Cambodia. Upset and dejected, the Palti family decided to seize the opportunity as a family mission. Two months later, six of them found themselves in Cambodia, volunteering at a rural school outside Siem Reap. What began as teaching English evolved into a comprehensive program. CRST supports students not only through tuition but also by providing living allowances, healthcare, and mentorship. This support allows them to stay focused on their education and future success. The ripple effect to their extended family is huge, breaking the cycle of poverty that so many Cambodian students are trapped in. Empowering Others: A Leadership Philosophy The philosophy of building others up underscores CRST, rooted in the belief that empowerment is key to sustainable change. Aviv emphasised the importance of leaders knowing when to step aside and support others, especially when they stumble. It's about building resilience and capability rather than merely stepping in to fix problems. Leading by Doing: The CRST Model CRST's innovative model places its students at the helm. From early on, students are taught to lead and manage the NGO. They are given roles equivalent to government positions—NGO Manager, Deputy NGO Manager, Education Manager, etc. This hands-on leadership develops their skillsets and instills in them a deep sense of responsibility and ownership, making CRST a sustainable model that equips the leaders of tomorrow. Building Trust and Sustainability One of the key elements Aviv highlighted was the importance of trust. From the onset, CRST committed to seeing its students through high school and university. This commitment, coupled with transparency and accountability, has built strong relationships with students and their families. Every year, new student selection teams, composed of current students, engage in a meticulous selection process that involves meeting families and village chiefs, ensuring a deep-rooted trust within the community. Make sure you check out Aviv's book, "Empowered," which is designed as a leadership guide. Featuring stories of CRST alumni who worked to become the future social leaders of their country, Aviv's message is that leadership is a set of responsibilities anyone can learn, practise and own. A staggering ninety-five percent of young Australians aged between 12 and 18 are experiencing some level of body image concern, and more than half are unhappy with how their body looks. That's according to Butterfly's second Body Kind Youth Survey. With body dissatisfaction playing a significant role in the development of eating disorders, it's not surprising that this data makes sense in relation to Butterfly's latest Paying the Price Report, which shows 27% of individuals with an eating disorder are aged 19 or younger. It's quite clear there's a problem, but what can we do? How can parents and caregivers reduce risk and support the individual young people they love? In this episode of Let's Talk, we invited our audience to submit their direct questions. Then we asked Helen Bird, Butterfly's Education Manager and Lead on the Survey, to respond. While acknowledging that it's not always easy talking to teens, Helen delivered. “We live in a society where body size matters,” she says. “And people are picking up very strong messages from a young age. It's in the media, in books, in the toys that they're playing with.” The trick is to focus on health-promoting behaviours, that is, ensuring that our teens are eating nutritious food, they're moving regularly, they're getting enough sleep, they're practising self-care strategies, and that they have positive coping mechanisms. These are the things that contribute to our teens' health and happiness; it's not necessarily about their shape and weight. And if you are noticing signs of a problem? “Lean in with compassion and curiosity,” says Helen. “Talk about the things that you've noticed, but in terms of your young person's feelings and moods. Again, try not to focus on weight or eating behaviours because that's quite likely to be met with resistance.” Tune in for more of Helen's wise and empowering tips, even if you might have body image issues yourself. Working to heal your own relationship with your body is not only good for you but also for the people around you, including your teens.
