Experiencing trauma tests the human spirit in ways that are very hard to put into words. But Melbourne based duo Legless and Blind AKA Ben Pettingill and Mike Rolls do. Renowned for their Tough Talk, these two men have faced dramatic health diagnoses that completely altered their life trajectory, but ultimately they made the same choice- to pick themselves up as best they could and try and help other people do the same. The dynamic duo is coming to Beef2024 to host two seminars as part of the Beef Australia Seminar Program that are not only heart wrenching, tough talking, insightful, and vulnerable but absolutely hilarious. In this episode of What's Your Beef we have a sneak peek at what you can expect from these two and be warned, while the name Legless and Blind may seem like a flippant remark, they are anything but!

The tables have turned, and I've sat in the interviewee seat in this episode. Former guests and absolute legends Mike Rolls and Ben Pettingill have recently launched a brilliant podcast, Talkin' Tough... it's a podcast redefining what it means to be tough and where tough is in the talking. And well, I'm all for being tough and for talking about the tough so here we are doing just that. If you love what Mike & Ben are all about be sure to check out their podcast too, it's raw, relatable and these blokes are an absolute hoot! Based on the episode title, it's actually not what you think... We're not having a chat about driving under the influence. The legless and blind duo are back and every bit as brilliant as ever. Mike Rolls (the bloke with no legs) and Ben Pettingill (the bloke with no sight) have been mighty busy, not just by both having children since our last chat, but also hitting the road for 'Mates On A Mission' to open the men's mental health conversation around rural Victoria. I can't think of a better couple of humans to embark on this topic with as we laugh through what can often be a difficult conversation to open up about. Amidst the seriousness, these two apparently make a killer winning team for a game of pool and Mike's raised his hand to jump in the ring with me for a boxing fight, so stay tuned for that yeah! When you see the title Legless & Blind, I will forgive you for assuming I have a couple of rollicking piss-heads behind the mic with me... But alas, the title is literal. I have two of the most fun, quick-witted and inspiring legends I've met joining me for a candid banter about life sans 98% vision, two lower limbs, a number of fingers, toes and a little bit of nose. They make up for all that and more with incredible substance and personality... I'm stalking them until they tell their friend that I'm their friend too (shhh, don't tell them, that would be awkward) Enjoy. In September 2001, at the age of 18, Mike’s life changed forever. He contracted one of the deadliest diseases on the planet, Meningococcal Septicemia while on an end of season Football trip. Mike’s chances of survival were as little as 5%. His family were told to say goodbye on more than one occasion as he fought for his life. He spent the next 6 months in hospital where he was given the sobering news that it could take years to achieve even the most basic tasks, such as walking and driving, as well as the devastating realisation that sport may not be a possibility. This week on ListenABLE Dylan Alcott and Angus O’Loughlin talk to Mike Rolls about his journey back to health, an adaptive mindset and a conscious decision to embrace challenge and change. His determination to live a happy, fulfilling life is evident in his accomplishments as a double amputee, like running again after many years, representing Australia in golf, climbing one of Australia’s tallest buildings and passionately advocating and supporting other amputees who experience similar circumstances See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

After contracting one of the deadliest diseases on the planet, Meningococcal Septicemia, at age 18, Mike Rolls was left with horrific internal and external injuries and the amputation of his left leg. He made a slow and arduous journey back to health, and 8 years after falling ill, made the terrifying decision to amputate his other leg, as further infections in the bones made it even more difficult for him to move freely and go about his daily life. As he recovered, he found new opportunities began to open up for him. His determination to live a happy, fulfilling life is evident in his accomplishments as a double amputee, like running again after many years, representing Australia in golf, completing the Eureka climb (one of Australia’s tallest buildings) and passionately advocating and supporting other amputees who experience similar circumstances. Now, Mike is a professional speaker who inspires people to be resilient and to ‘amputate’ the dead weight from their lives, in order to empower themselves and create room for more positive, beneficial elements to take their place.
