Esperanza and Irwin talk about the Shinnecock Summer School of Art, the first outdoors Art School in the US, founded in 1891. Students had the opportunity to learn from the renowned artist William Merritt Chase. Now, Chase was and is a well known Artist. But it was the Art Village cottages, grouped near the studio in the Shinnecock Hills, that is the off-radar part of the story. These properties, in different styles on curving streets created its own sense of wonder. What presented itself was almost whimsical, a storybook like setting. Best of all, it exists to this day. Listening is believing!

Since 1963, a sprawling 84-acre stretch of Shinnecock Hills has had a college presence, first as Southampton College, then, starting in 2006, as the Southampton campus of Stony Brook University. Over the years, some things have stayed the same — the campus is a focal point for marine science and a bastion of the arts — but the vision for its future has varied. Today, Stony Brook has plans to build a new $300 million hospital on the site, which could spark a new era for the campus. In the meantime, the condition of some buildings have critics crying foul and worrying about Stony Brook's vision — or lack thereof. Several key leaders from the Stony Brook University administration joined Assemblyman Fred W. Thiele Jr., a key critic of the state of the campus, State Senator Anthony Palumbo, and former U.S. Representative Tim Bishop, a former Southampton College provost, to discuss the present and future of Stony Brook Southampton.
Reporter Stephen Kotz joins the editors to discuss the first in a three-part series appearing in Express News Group newspapers looking at the college campus in Shinnecock Hills once known as Southampton College and now known as Stony Brook Southampton.
Jaeger Kovich joins this week to discuss his career as a golf course architect. Born as a New Yorker, Jaeger was exposed to Shinnecock Hills early in his teens for what he calls his "aha moment". A few books later, the aha moment became a persistent chase to work for Tom Doak. That push included many emails, uncertainty, and nights studying mandarin in hopes of getting the next job in China. He got that job, eventually worked with Gil Hanse & Jim Wagner for many years, eventually as an associate, where he experienced the boom of restorations and new builds we all know and love. The security of those jobs did not stop him. He put everything into what once was a vehicle for contracting work, Proper Golf, and has been at work consulting for clubs in the Northeast. Because he's seen so much, worked with so many talented shapers, superintendents, associates, architects, owners, and clubs, the stories are endless. We kept it brief today and happy with what we covered. Hope you all enjoy!Cheers,- The Tie GuysWebsite:https://www.thetiepodcast.comInstagram:https://www.instagram.com/thetiepodcast/?hl=enTwitter:https://mobile.twitter.com/thetiepodcastGoodWalk Coffee:https://goodwalkcoffee.comCODE: thetie for 20% offBDraddy:bdraddy.comCODE: thetie25 for 25% off

We recount some of the more important and entertaining moments in each championship, discuss what golf looked like in 1995, who had close calls, and a ton more.
Mike Keohan has been a friend of EarthWorks for close to thirty years and has built a few golf courses over his impressive career. He has recently taken the position of Golf Course Superintendent at the iconic Sebonack Golf Club in Southampton NY. Sebonack is on the east end of Long Island NY, arguably where the best golf courses in the world reside. His is walking neighbors with Shinnecock Hills and the National Golf Links. As the club's website reports “Jack Nicklaus and Tom Doak, two designers with dramatically different styles, have used the natural contours and features of the land to create a unique look.” It is a very impressive property where the touch of both architects can be seen from the first tee and beyond. Mike talks to us about the environmental sensitivity of the property with seven monitoring wells that record pesticide and fertilizer run off. His work experience spans the entire East Coast from Vermont to Florida! With his home now solidly set in Southampton, Mike is ready to finish his career strong. Not the Swing, but Visibility, Member Service and Access is Paramount for any Department Head Visibility is crucial for a Director of Golf and Pat Gunning understands that. His daily ritual as Director of Golf at the famed Noyac Golf Club takes him to the club to greet the members teeing off at 6.30am. His day is basically set up to make himself as visible to the members as possible. Although at the club most of the day, he limits the number of hours he teaches, so he remains available to the membership, and sometimes more importantly, to his staff. Tee Times for Management Flow “Starting times, tee times, it really allows you to anticipate what is going to happen better. It makes the flow of the day that much easier,” says Gunning who has worked at clubs with and without tee times. Covid, says Gunning, really ended the "Caddy Yard" – and with Covid and starting times changing people's thought processes on tee times, it allow caddies to be reserved and also get on with their work and with their day too rather than just hanging at the caddy barn. “The Little Things Take Care of the Big Things” Pat Gunning, Director of Golf at Noyac Golf Club, Sag Harbor, NY Pat realizes that golf and tennis professionals, and really anyone in the club business, are in the hospitality business. He learned the above quote from one of his mentors, Jack Druga, who is Director of Golf at Shinnecock Hills. And, recently retired Bob Ford who served as Director of Golf at both Oakmont and Seminole, always told Pat to treat members as if they were guests in your own home. Pat says keeping these two thoughts in his mind during a fast-paced summer season allows him to succeed. Is it the Era of Reconstruction for Golf Courses? Clubs want to create a better and more memorable experience and the design of the golf course falls into making that playing experience better. Having viewed changes across the nation by some of the best golf course architects, Gunning believes that the best changes are tweaks and modifications which make the golf course harder for the A and B player but slightly easier for the C and D player. The architects, Gunning says, are masters at making holes playable for all level of players. Golf course design and modification is part of a long-term strategy. Gunning adds that long-term strategic planning is really all about idea creation. Timelines may be either adopted or changed or completely shelved by the Board, but it's imperative to keep new ideas flowing through the strategic plan, believes Gunning. Planning for next year is essential and reviewing the calendar, event by event, is a crucial exercise to do post-season. It helps keep the season flowing and allows to avoid staff burnout and member boredom. Pat Gunning joins the BeyondTheBaselines.com podcast as one of the leading Directors of Golf in the country.

Wayne Morrison is the author of The Nature Faker, a monumental biography of William Flynn. It's safe to say that no one on earth knows more about Flynn, the architect behind Shinnecock Hills and many other great courses. In this episode (which is the first of a few we have planned on specific architects), Wayne goes in depth with Andy Johnson on Flynn's life and work during the Golden Age of golf course design. Wayne talks about how he became interested in Flynn and how his massive book came together. He and Andy also touch on Flynn's involvement with many courses that have stood the test of time, including not only Shinnecock but also Pine Valley, Merion East, Cherry Hills, Rolling Green, Lancaster, and Indian Creek. You can order your own copy of The Nature Faker by emailing Wayne at wsmorrison@hotmail.com.

Inness, a King-Collins design-build project condensing the old Rondout Golf Club from 18 to 9 new holes, opened in June with Anthony Minniti at the helm. It wasn't easy. Minniti came over from The Creek and Shinnecock Hills to grow in and polish the new resort course Accord, NY, in the upper Hudson Valley between the Catskill and Shawangunk Mountains. Weather, short staffing and lots of clay and rock stood in the way. Anthony Pioppi chats with Minniti about the challenges and the accomplishments at Inness.
Since we started the Podcast in early 2020, this weeks guest has been in our Top 5 bucket list players to chat to. We are thrilled to have the great South African Retief Goosen on this weeks Pod. We chat the early years, the infamous lightening strike & military service with his good buddy Ernie Els. As we build towards the US Open next week, this two time winner (2001 & 2004) talks us through the three putt on the 72nd hole in 2001 which consequently led to an 18 hole Play-off victory over Mark Brooks. Arguably Retief's greatest win was in 2004 when he took on Phil Mickelson, the partisan New York crowds and a near unplayable Shinnecock Hills to claim his second US Open. Commonly referred to as “The Iceman”, Retief chats on how to thrive under pressure and we also get his refreshing opinions on the distance debate.
Golfer Matt Parziale joins me for this pod to talk about playing in major championships, his mental game, life as a big time amateur golfer, his preparation for events, his schedule, his plans for golf down the road, and more. Matt has won the Mass Amateur Championship, the Mass Mid-Am, the US Mid-Am, and was the winner of the low amateur at the 2018 US Open at Shinnecock Hills.

How much can a golf course's conditions really affect the scores for a tournament? My Parents are the Best Humans in the World This is a segment of a keynote presentation I did at Golf Academy of America in Orlando. I talk about a phase of my college and amateur golf career where I had a debilitating bout with the putting yips. I told my dad over a pizza that I was going to quit golf forever. For context, quitting golf for me at that time was not really feasible. I had earned a golf scholarship at Florida Southern College - by the way we won the Division II NCAA National Championship that year. I was also the defending champion of the Maine State Amateur...at the age of 19. There were a ton of expectations around my golf...my life was all about golf. My parents matter in this equation for one simple reason - they were cool with what I wanted to do. That's it. No convincing. No discussions on the costs of my education. No chats about what all their friends at our home club would think. It was cool either way. I had support. Fast forward the tape 4 years to me wiping my face full of tears, thinking of that slice of pizza with my dad, standing with my brother Jake on the 1st tee at Shinnecock Hills in the US Open Championship. Cheers my friends. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/golf-essentials/message

Our guest this week is Dennis Walters, star of the Dennis Walters Golf Show! Dennis is one of only eleven honorary lifetime members of The PGA of America. Earlier this year, the USGA awarded Dennis with the Bob Jones Award during the U.S. Open at Shinnecock Hills. Next year, Dennis will be inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame. Dennis was an exceptional collegiate player, but before he was able to chase down the dream of playing on the PGA Tour, he had a tragic accident that left him paralyzed. As you'll find out in this episode, that didn't stop him from finding a different way to play golf. Eventually, he developed the Dennis Walters Golf Show and has been on his OWN tour for over 40 years. He's performed over 3K shows all over the world. His trick shot artistry may be the glitz and glam of the show, but most importantly....he provides a message of positivity and hard work to his audiences. Todd Lewis, The Golf Channel, calls in to start the show off talking about the Greenbrier Classic and the upcoming Open Championship from St. Andrews. Danny Lee won the Greenbrier Classic for his first win on the PGA Tour by outlasting three others and winning on the second hole in a sudden-death playoff. He won the U.S. Amateur Championship and now knows he can win on the PGA Tour. At the Greenbrier, Robert Streb putted with his wedge after damaging his putter during the final round of the tournament. Holly asks Todd about Bubba Watson, a resident at the Greenbrier Classic. Todd says that when a player wins he's mentally fatigued among many other things. Holly G asks Todd about Rory McIlroy announcing that he will miss the Open Championship due to an ankle injury he suffered while playing having a kick about with his friends. Todd feels that it is very smart of Rory to do this and give his body a chance to heal, especially after all that Tiger has tried to push through his pain and injuries. Todd said that he had injured his own ankle just by stepping off a curb while at the Dubai Championship. Jordan Spieth opted not to go to St. Andrews and scout the course for the upcoming Open Championship, but instead play the John Deere Classic. Todd says that there are a lot of birdies to be had at this course. Holly and Todd spoke about the fact that some people believe that he should be at St. Andrews scouting the course and prepare to win his third consecutive Major championship. Todd says that Spieth feels a loyalty to John Deere since they gave him a sponsor's exemption that led to a victory and launched his career. Holly and Todd also mention that Spieth is the favorite according to Vegas now that McIlroy is out. "He's not the longest off the tee ... but he has two big things that make him an elite player, there is no better clutch putter on the PGA Tour, his will, determination and heart is unmatched on the PGA Tour," said Lewis. Tony Leodora, GolfTalk Live and Golfstyles Magazine, calls in from the site of the U.S. Women's Open Championship at the Lancaster Country Club, Pa., to talk about this week's Major Championship event. Tony says that the course is a William Flynn designed golf course. Flynn has also designed other notable courses like Shinnecock Hills in Long Island and Cherry Hills in Denver. Tony said that Flynn was quarantined in the Philadelphia area for about 10 years during an outbreak of Tuberculosis. So Flynn worked in the Philadelphia area and spent some of his time designing several golf courses. As for the U.S. Women's Open this week, Tony mentioned that there have been torrential rains in the central Pennsylvania area and heavy rain was falling while he was on the phone with Holly G. Tony pointed out that 10 former women's open champs are playing in the this year's tourney as well as 10 former second place finishers like Stacy Lewis, Morgan Pressel and Suzann Pettersen. So it is sure to be an exciting week of golf. If you aren't in Lancaster for the tournament this week, you can watch it on Fox Sports and Fox Sports1, so check your local listings. Golf Digest Top 50 Coach @GaryGilchrist calls in from the #USWomensOpen in Lancaster, Pennsylvania to talk to Holly G about all things golf and his FREE Summer Golf Camp Session at the Gilchrist Golf Academy at Mission Inn Resort & Club, Howey in the Hills, Fla. Listeners can sign up on The Golf Insiders home page for the Gilchrist Golf Academy Fantastic Giveaway worth $1,850. Gilchrist coached Yani Tseng and helped he ascend to become the #1 ranked women's golfer in the World. Now one of his LPGA players he is coaching is Shanshan Feng. Gary feels that Feng is one of the most consistent ball strikers in the world. Gilchrist says that the women will have to learn how to putt the greens, especially with all the rain this week. Holly and Gary talked about the Swingclick training aid that he had a chance to test recently. I'm really impressed with the product, it's something that you can take to the range and it you don't have to put it on your club and make it heavier, but it attaches to your forearm and really helps you get your left arm in the correct position at the top of the backswing. Gary said that the Swingclick also helps you with your tempo and rhythm as well as helping you wind your body. Gary pointed out that too many golfers don't set up the correct way and Swingclick will help you with that too. From the John Deere Classic, Adam Schupak, Golfweek, calls in to wrap up the show. Holly and Adam talk about last week's win for Danny Lee and how this win might serve as a big breakthrough for him on the Tour. Danny won the U.S. Amateur Championship so young and everyone had great expectations for him. Holly and Adam also discuss Jordan Spieth honoring his commitment to play the John Deere instead of traveling over to Europe and getting acclimated to the time change and the scope of St Andrews. No one has one the first three legs of the Grand Slam on the PGA Tour since Ben Hogan did it in the 1950s. Adam said that he had been talking with former PGA Champion Lee Trevino, and Lee said that he liked to play in a tournament the week prior to a major championship so he would be able to figure out what is working and what was not. Lee didn't want to wait to get to the Major and try to figure it all out then. Holly asks Adam about Phil Mickelson's chances with all of the legal drama going on in the background. Adam mentions that Phil has played so well on links golf courses for the past couple of years. Of course Phil played terrific at Muirfield at won in 2013. Adam feels that if St. Andrews plays fast that it could work well for Phil. we really haven't seen very much from Phil lately. Since Mickelson won the Scottish Open in 2013 the week prior to winning the Open Championship the following week, Adam feels that we may find out more about Mickelson's game and his chances after this week's Scottish Open.
