In 1923, Jewish union activists affiliated with the Workmen's Circle bought a plot of land in Hopewell Junction, New York, aiming to provide working-class children with an escape from the city. The camp, which was founded with a commitment to Yiddish and to instilling leftist values, broke with the socialist Workmen's Circle several years later, as it came to be affiliated with the Communist Party. Over the years, everything that touched the left made its mark on the camp—from the Spanish Civil War to McCarthyism to the emergence of the New Left. In honor of Kinderland's centennial, editor-in-chief Arielle Angel spoke with longtime Kinderlanders (and JC councilmembers) Judee Rosenbaum and Mitchell Silver about the legacy of Communism in camp, the difference between education and indoctrination, what's changed at camp in the last 100 years, and why it's survived this long. Season 2 concludes with running enthusiast and urban planner Mitchell Silver. When Mayor Bill de Blasio named Mitchell as New York City's Parks Commissioner, he called him “a visionary.” The Mayor went on to say: “He has a passion for fairness and equality. He understands that we have to ensure that parks and open spaces are available in every community and are well-maintained in every neighborhood in this city.” At NYC Parks, MItchell streamlined the capital process by 6 months allowing the public to enjoy renovated parks sooner. He introduced a new public realm strategy called “Parks without Borders,” launched a capital project tracking system and initiated a Framework for an Equitable Future to improve the parks system that included a $318 million campaign to transform 67 of the City's most neglected parks. The $50 million “Parks Without Borders” program earned national and international recognition for its innovative approach to urban design and helped make parks safer and more accessible. Both the Community Parks Initiative and Parks without Borders is being replicated in the United States and abroad. Follow his story on IG @mitchell_silver. Mitchell Silver's drive and determination is the kind of story that inspires generations. The kid from Brooklyn who dropped out of high school after just two years, made his way back to earn degrees in architecture and urban planning, the first black president of the American Planning Association to then become New York City Parks Commissioner. His road had many turns and valleys, and deeply marked by the his mother's death at a young age, and the death of his brother and best friend Sam as an adult. His legacy as a runner and Parks and Recreations Commissioner will be felt for generations to come. His goal at the helm of the agency was to make public spaces more equitable. His decision to rename the Central Park loop after Ted Corbitt, the co-founder of New York Road Runners and its first and only black president is one of the many outdoor spaces he renamed under his tenure. Silver is training for the Chicago and New York City marathons in 2021, and memories of running with Harlem Run and the diverse NYC running community is what keeps him going.

Mitchell Silver, FAICP, thinks parks are more than just islands of green spaces — much, much more. As Commissioner of the New York City Department of Parks and Recreation, Mitch makes it his mission to understand how people use these critical urban spaces, and he aims to ensure that children, adults, seniors, and everyone in between have access to a quality 21st-century park system. Courtney caught up with Mitch during the 2018 National Planning Conference in New Orleans, Louisiana, and the two discussed not only how he was shaped by a childhood spent blocks away from Brooklyn’s Prospect Park, but also how seriously he takes public engagement when working with residents on park projects. He touches on some of the initiatives under way in his department and highlights a few of the less well-known examples of park success stories in New York City, including St. Mary's Park in the Bronx and Highbridge Park, home to the city’s oldest standing bridge. Mitch reflects on his time in Raleigh, North Carolina, where he served as Chief Planning & Development Officer and Planning Director and sought to encourage growth in a community once hesitant to change. He also shares his views on equity, which he defines simply as fairness, in a bid to eliminate the jargon planners can sometimes employ when discussing the subject.
