De val van Jeruzalem was het gevolg van aanhoudende ongehoorzaamheid aan God, ondanks herhaalde waarschuwingen via de profeet Jeremia. Koning Zedekia kwam in opstand tegen Babel, wat leidde tot een zware belegering, hongersnood en uiteindelijk de verwoesting van de stad. De tempel werd geplunderd, het volk werd in ballingschap weggevoerd en Juda verloor alles wat het had.Toch eindigt Gods boodschap niet met oordeel. Door Jeremia beloofde God herstel, vergeving en een nieuwe toekomst voor wie zich bekeert. Le phénomène n'est pas nouveau, mais depuis une vingtaine d'années, il est en plein essor : certains groupes en Afrique subsaharienne assurent être des descendants des Tribus perdues d'Israël, exilées vers Koush (la terre des Hébreux en Afrique) ; d'autres se sont identifiés au judaïsme par conviction, parfois par conversion personnelle, s'estimant plus proches de cette religion que du christianisme imposé par la force par le colonisateur. Certains ne recherchent pas la reconnaissance par Israël, d'autres au contraire la souhaitent et ne veulent plus être ignorés par les communautés juives. Malgré des cultures et traditions ancestrales riches liées aux ancêtres, certains de ces groupes revendiquent leur appartenance au judaïsme et parfois leur filiation au peuple juif. Un essor étonnant qui ne semble pas fléchir ni subir les conséquences de la situation à Gaza et la guerre menée par Israël. He tells the story of Dreyfus's early life in Paris, his promising career as a French officer, the false accusation leading to his imprisonment on Devil's Island, the fight to prove his innocence that divided the French nation, and his life of quiet obscurity after World War I.Samuels's striking perspective is enriched by a newly available archive of more than three thousand documents and objects donated by the Dreyfus family. Unlike many historians, Samuels argues that Dreyfus was not an “assimilated” Jew. Rather, he epitomized a new model of Jewish identity made possible by the French Revolution, when France became the first European nation to grant Jews full legal equality.
