The new documentary "Maintenance Artist" tells the story of public artist Mierle Laderman Ukeles, the first New York City Sanitation Department artist-in-residence, a title she still holds today. Ukeles used her position in the 1970s to make public statements about essential workers and about feminism. Katy has built and managed non-profit research organizations for leading academic institutions for the past decade. She was the Executive Director of NYU School of Law's Criminal Justice Lab, and prior to this, she was Executive Director of Crime Lab New York, a criminal justice research organization based at University of Chicago. She was also Executive Director of Reentry Services at the NYC Department of Corrections and a staff attorney at Legal Aid Society in the Criminal Defense Division. New York City is going car-free this summer, turning normally congested streets into pedestrian and cyclist-friendly roads. “Summer Streets is an opportunity that we have to give a break to our streets, not to have cars and trucks and those vehicles and open the streets for fitness, wellness, cultural, entertainments, walking,” Ydanis Rodriguez, Commissioner of the New York City Department of Transportation, said. The annual tradition began in 2008 in Manhattan, closing almost 7 miles along Park Avenue and Lafayette Street to motorized vehicles. Summer Streets has expanded to all five boroughs. This year, the program has added over 22 miles of car-free roadways. NYC Summer Streets kicked off in Queens and Staten Island in July. “Now all New Yorkers of different socio-economic and ethnic backgrounds, they also can use our streets, not only to ride the bike, but also to walk, and also to enjoy the different cultural expression that are a big part of our city,” Rodriguez said. Summer Streets is part of a broader effort by the NYC Department of Transportation (DOT) to prioritize equity in transportation. The event includes free fitness classes, bike-riding lessons, art installations, and performances, fostering a sense of community and promoting active lifestyles. Colby Oliver biked in from neighboring Long Island City and liked the idea of carless streets. “I think just the freedom to get on your bike, walk, run, whatever you want to do and not worry about cars in the way,” Oliver said. The streets are car-free from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m., rain or shine. “I think it's something I look forward to every single summer,” Erik Edeen said. “I'm a big runner and cyclist, and I like to be able to see the city from different angles that you usually don't get to see when you're constrained to just the sidewalks or some of the running paths.” This article was provided by The Associated Press.

How can you find a mentor?   For this Women of Color Rise episode, I speak with Veronica Conforme, Co-Founder and Co-CEO of Greenhouse E3, a national nonprofit developing diverse pipelines of future education leaders. Veronica describes herself as a rebel—she turned down her father's advice to become an accountant and instead set out to change the world. Her career includes serving as COO of the NYC Department of Education, leading UP Education Network in Massachusetts, and serving as Chancellor of the Education Achievement Authority of Michigan.    Veronica credits mentorship as a key to her success—but not as luck. It came through clarity, purpose, and values-aligned work. “You have to be really clear about what you're trying to achieve,” she says. “I grew up in the South Bronx, saw inequity firsthand, and knew I wanted to disrupt systems and change outcomes for communities like mine.”   Because she led with purpose, mentors found her through the work. “I wasn't from the education sector, but when I helped principals rethink how to use their budgets to serve their communities, people noticed. They'd say, ‘Come work with us.' That's where mentorship happened—in the work, through shared values.”   Veronica offers this advice for finding a mentor: Get clear on your mission. What change do you want to make in the world? Be open. Stay open to help, new relationships, and new perspectives—even if they come from unexpected places. Do the work. Lead with your values, show what you're about, and opportunities will follow. Make it mutual.
