Non è possibile parlare della preghiera cristiana se non alla luce dell'incarnazione del Figlio di Dio, il quale ha voluto assumere la natura umana per dare all'uomo la possibilità di entrare nel mondo di Dio. Per Cristo, con Cristo ed in Cristo noi diventiamo creature nuove, figli adottivi di Dio, e siamo introdotti nell'intimità della Santissima Trinità. La vita cristiana, pertanto, si risolve nella comunione con le tre Persone divine: Padre, Figlio e Spirito Santo. La Chiesa, i sacramenti, la preghiera e l'esercizio della carità fraterna, che da essi sgorga, hanno lo scopo di educare "trinitariamente" la nostra anima; ci abituano a relazionarci con Dio nostro Padre; permettono a Cristo di prendere possesso della nostra esistenza; consentono allo Spirito di istruirci interiormente e di guidarci alla Verità. Nel cristianesimo, dunque, tutto viene dall'Alto. Anche la preghiera. Non a caso il Compendio del Catechismo della Chiesa Cattolica, parlando della preghiera in generale, afferma che «essa è sempre dono di Dio» (§534). Con questo dono Dio «nel suo immenso amore parla agli uomini come ad amici e si intrattiene con essi, per invitarli e ammetterli alla comunione con sé» (Dei Verbum, §2).Gesù parlando della preghiera ha posto l'insistenza sulla «necessità di pregare sempre, senza stancarci» (Lc 18,1; cfr. 1Tess 5,17). Non ha detto nulla in merito alla perfezione della preghiera. Conoscendo la fragilità umana, Egli sa che la nostra preghiera è disturbata da pensieri, preoccupazioni, affanni. Il Catechismo della Chiesa cattolica riconosce che «la difficoltà abituale della nostra preghiera è la distrazione» (§2729). Il Signore, dunque, non pretende da noi risultati perfetti, ma chiede la perseveranza, chiede cioè di non arrenderci, coltivando il desiderio di offrire a Lui il nostro tempo ed il nostro cuore perché lo purifichi.San Luigi Maria Grignon de Monfort insegna che le distrazioni - sta parlando della preghiera del Rosario - si combattono «continuando il tuo Rosario, quantunque senza alcun gusto e consolazione sensibile: è un combattimento terribile ma salutare all'anima fedele». Santa Teresa di Lisieux ci invita a sfruttare le distrazioni e confessa: «Anch'io ne ho molte, ma appena me ne accorgo prego per le persone il cui pensiero sta distraendo la mia attenzione, e in questo modo loro traggono beneficio dalla mia distrazione».In conclusione, è bene ricordare che se la preghiera richiede attenzione, essa non va confusa con una tecnica di concentrazione mentale. La pretesa di conseguire un raccoglimento assoluto - dove sono assenti ogni forma di dispersione e distrazione - rappresenta un errore che può portare allo scoraggiamento, produrre inquietudine e abbandono della preghiera. Tale errore è oggi sempre più presente vista la diffusione di alcune pratiche, spesso provenienti dalla cultura asiatica, che non sono spiritualmente neutre. Dobbiamo, dunque, essere consapevoli della specificità della fede cristiana e della sua differenza rispetto a proposte che sono particolarmente insidiose. La vera risposta al problema delle distrazioni nella preghiera non risiede, infatti, in una maggiore concentrazione della mente, ma nel riconoscere la presenza di Dio, che nel suo infinito amore entra in dialogo con me per dirmi qualcosa che giorno dopo giorno cambierà la mia vita. Il Signore ci chiede di "rimanere" con Lui e di ricondurre a Lui, dopo ogni distrazione, il nostro spirito. Con questo combattimento, come insegna il Catechismo, noi dichiariamo la nostra scelta di amare il Signore e di donare a Lui il nostro cuore.
