Before building an entire real estate portfolio, Matthew Garland was laid off from the TSA. He went from searching for contraband in your suitcase to searching for jobs ASAP. He had no degree, no office job experience, but he was good at connecting with people.  He got a job as a loan officer and was making money hand over fist. Then the market crashed, his savings dwindled, his credit score plummeted, and he even got foreclosed on. It was time to build something real. That's when a rich client of his introduced him to the “wealth hack” that helped him rebuild his life through rental properties. Now, you probably know Matthew as MG the Mortgage Guy, sharing as many insider lending secrets as possible so you can buy your next property. In this episode, he's doing the same, telling YOU how to get preapproved now, what you need to get a lender to take you seriously on your first deal, and how he rebuilt his life, one property at a time.  If you think you can't build a real estate portfolio because you're starting from zero, MG will show you how to get ahead and into your first deal, even if you feel way behind the starting line.  In This Episode We Cover The “wealth hack” of the rich that gets you investment properties with little money down How to rebuild your financial foundation with real estate investing (even if you have little money or low credit) Why you never overleverage yourself and why scaling quickly (probably) isn't worth the stress  Four things you need to get preapproved for a mortgage (and what to do if you're missing one or all) When to call a lender: Do you need to have perfect credit before you start? He told them they were idiots and hung up. That call is the reason Optigy exists in its current form.   Steve and his co-founders rebuilt the company in 48 hours. No clients, only partners. No vendor relationships, no race to the bottom, no "send us reqs and we'll send you names." It cost them roughly $3.5M in walked-away deals in year one. It also got them in a room with one of the largest healthcare organizations in the country, where they built the first physician healthcare recruitment team in the ACO space — on a $400 website, an ATS they didn't own, and a phone they hadn't bought yet.   Year one: $1.1M off six months of real building. Year two: $3.7M. Year three, closing January 2027, on track for $19.4M. 53 partners, 84% close rate, only two partners lost in two years. A private equity deal closed December 2025 that changed what's possible from here. This episode is the operator's playbook behind that arc. Why "partners, not clients" isn't marketing — it's a P&L decision. What broke in Q1 of year two when the credit card bills came due. What Steve learned in-house at a company that saved his life five months after a heart attack he didn't see coming. And the line his older brother gave him that reshaped how he thinks about time: "I have lived longer than I have left to live."  If you've been waiting for the right moment to bet on yourself, this is the one to listen to twice.  What You'll Learn: Why "partners, not clients" is the model that scaled Optigy from zero to a $19.4M run-rateThe exact moment Year 1 broke — and the leadership shift that fixed itHow to walk into a 2,200-location healthcare org with no website and no ATSWhat in-house recruiting teaches you that no agency seat ever canThe five-part call structure and where 90% of recruiters fall apart on the transitionWhy "work works" is the only input that matters early — and what replaces it as you scaleThe diligence questions that protect founders from the wrong PE partner

Resumes never tell the full story. The candidate who casually mentioned she's open to relocating, the manager who said he wants a four-day week, the senior dev who's quietly looking — that detail gets buried in notes and forgotten. Atlas changes that. It's the AI-first recruitment platform built to eliminate admin, capturing every conversation automatically and turning it into something you can actually search. With MagicSearch you can ask Atlas "who talked about relocating?" or "who mentioned a four-day week?" and it pulls the answers instantly across your entire database. Atlas also makes BD easier with opportunity tracking and client relationship tools powered by generative AI, plus smart dashboards that give you full pipeline visibility across the business. Atlas customers report 40%+ EBITDA growth and 80%+ increases in monthly billings after adoption. It's built for agencies that want to grow without adding more manual work. https://recruitwithatlas.com April 24, 2020. Catiana Ibarra Aponte was handing layoff letters to her own team when her own letter came. Her director's parting line: "If we had more recruiting, you'd still be here." She heard what she'd been hearing her whole life. Not good enough. This wasn't her first no. Her father, a second-generation pharmacy owner, told her she couldn't take over the family business — she was a girl, she'd have other roles. Her master's professor told the class on day one they weren't degree material. Now her employer was saying the same thing during a global pandemic. She cried for four hours. Then she built a plan. In this episode of The Elite Recruiter Podcast, Catiana — now CEO and Brand Manager of PeopleLift, an HR staffing and AI consulting firm serving clients across Puerto Rico, Latin America, and the United States — walks Benjamin Mena through one of the most resilient career arcs in recruiting. Surviving Hurricane Maria with six months of no electricity while still trying to fill jobs. Bouncing through four contract roles in two years. Driving alone to a hotel during COVID lockdown for a first interview she suspected might be a kidnapping. Getting publicly attacked in a company-wide Slack channel by a teammate who compared her to a dog chasing a bone. Building the trust with clients that eventually moved her from talent acquisition manager to CEO. This is an episode for any agency recruiter, executive search professional, or staffing firm owner who's ever wondered whether they have what it takes to become an operator, a partner, or a CEO. It's also for any recruiter who's been told no — by a client, a candidate, a boss, a family member — and needs to hear from someone who turned every one of those nos into the next chapter. What you'll learn: Why being told "no" is the single most useful career fuel for an agency recruiterHow Catiana rebuilt her career across four contract roles before landing the CEO seatThe after-5pm work that took her from TA manager to operator to CEOHow to spot top billers who can become leaders — and which top billers should stay individual contributorsThe change-management playbook she used to push new processes through resistant teamsWhy one-service staffing firms are at risk and how PeopleLift expanded into fractional HR and AI consultingThe mindset shift that transformed her client retention and BD resultsWhat recruiters who dream of becoming operators or partners need to start doing tomorrow

Just got laid off in 2026? Whether you're trying to figure out what to do after a layoff, how to job search after being laid off, or how to land a better job without taking a pay cut, this episode breaks down exactly what to do in the first 48 hours after receiving the news. For most who experience a layoff, their first instinct is to fix it fast. Polish the resume. Post "open to work" on LinkedIn. Start applying Monday morning. That instinct is the exact move that turns a 3-month job search into a 9-month one, and the reason most laid-off professionals end up taking a pay cut instead of a pay raise. The first 48 hours after a layoff decide the next 9 months of your career. Most laid-off professionals make the same mistakes in those first two days, and those mistakes cost them months and thousands of dollars. A small percentage do the opposite, and they often end up earning more in their next role. In this episode, we unpack the 3 biggest mistakes laid-off professionals make and the 3 actions that actually move you forward. Whether you're navigating a tech layoff, corporate layoff, or any career change after being laid off, this is the layoff recovery guide for 2026. What you'll learn What to do in the first 48 hours after a layoff (and what NOT to do) The 3 layoff mistakes that add 6 months to your job search How to negotiate severance and avoid signing away leverage How to job search after a layoff without taking a pay cut How to turn a layoff into a pay raise and a career upgrade   Our book, Happen To Your Career: An Unconventional Approach To Career Change and Meaningful Work, is now available on audiobook! This week's episode is part three of the layoff series, and it's focused entirely on the employee side of the experience: what to actually do when you or someone you know is the one getting laid off.Spoiler alert: Over 40% of Americans have been laid off at least once in their careers. Statistically, this conversation is more relevant than most of us want to admit. This is a greatest hits episode worth another listen because the layoff conversation almost always centers on the company executing it. Traci flips the lens and walks through what employees actually need to know in the aftermath, from the immediate questions that surface in that first conversation to negotiating your severance, protecting your intellectual property, and separating your sense of self from your employer. What We Cover:That initial shock and what it might actually be telling youThe questions you should absolutely ask in that roomSeparation agreements and why everything is negotiableThe age 40 rule that changes your review timelineHealthcare continuation and what to ask for before COBRA ever enters the pictureWhat your former employer can and can't say about why you leftThe intellectual property clause you might have already signedWhy your resume should never be an emergencyUntangling your identity from your job titleFinancial resources and moves worth having on your radarConnect with Traci here:https://linktr.ee/HRTraciDisclaimer: Thoughts, opinions, and statements made on this podcast are not a reflection of the thoughts, opinions, and statements of the Company by whom Traci Chernoff is actively employed. Please note that this episode may contain paid endorsements and advertisements for products or services. Direct Marketing Solutions is shutting down its Portland production facility, resulting in 106 employees losing their jobs. The company, which has operated in Oregon for more than 40 years, says the closure will affect workers in production, warehouse, mailing, and inventory positions. The facility near Portland International Airport has been a major hub for the company's direct mail operations, producing more than a billion mail pieces each year.In this video, we break down what led to the closure, which jobs are being affected, and what it could mean for Portland's local economy. We also look at the company's WARN filing, the timeline for the layoffs, and whether workers may receive severance or relocation options. With Oregon's unemployment rate still above the national average, the shutdown raises concerns about how quickly displaced employees will be able to find new work.

After 13 years as a federal employee, Kara Cochran was laid off with five months of runway, no direction, no industry experience outside federal service, and a job search timeline half as long as the average. This is how she made a career change after a layoff, switched industries fast, and landed a senior Chief of Staff role she never applied for.   What you'll learn How Kara used an ideal career profile to go from "I don't know what I'm looking for" after a federal government career change to landing a chief of staff role she originally told herself nobody would ever hire her for — and the ChatGPT job search move that gave her a starting point she never expected Why every dead end Kara hit while navigating a career change after layoff — exploring nonprofits, clean energy, and management consulting — was actually sharpening what she really wanted the whole time, and how getting radically honest about her non-negotiables transformed her search from scattered to focused The unexpected strategy Kara used to land a senior role with no network and zero cold applications — how letting her work speak for her in a low pressure context turned a throwaway comment into a dinner with senior leadership and created a chief of staff role that did not exist before she walked in the door   Our book, Happen To Your Career: An Unconventional Approach To Career Change and Meaningful Work, is now available on audiobook! Today, as we read more stories about various layoffs (often using AI as an explanation), I'd like to suggest a big idea. AI Agents, defined as “Talent Redeployment Agents,” may be one of the most powerful new use-cases for AI in HR. No I'm not talking about AI randomly selecting people and zapping them by email based on financial results (that could happen I suppose), but something much bigger. Listen in as I explain how the “decoupling” of workers from their employers has led to a new era of dynamic employee redeployment, which is only possible with AI. FREE Master Class: The Farm Marketing Fix Sign Up HERE What does it actually take to turn a struggling farm into a profitable, joy-filled business? In this episode, we hear from Judith, a sheep and lamb farmer who joined the Farm Marketing Mastery program in April and sold out of her lamb entirely by the end of the year. She opens up about the mindset shifts that changed everything: moving from feeling like she was "throwing good time after bad" to waking up at 5am, excited to get to work. She talks about learning to see herself as the CEO of her farm, using the Sunday Start Strong planning method to stay focused and organized, and why she believes the confidence she gained is more valuable than any marketing tactic. Her story also touches on the guilt many farmers — especially women — feel about investing in themselves, the power of being surrounded by a community of like-minded farmers doing the mindset work, and her plan to double her sales while raising prices this year. If you're a farmer on the fence about getting help, questioning whether you're "worthy" enough to invest in your business, or wondering if a profitable farm is even possible — this episode was made for you. Key Takeaways: Why mindset coaching is inseparable from farm marketing success How the CEO mindset transforms the way you manage and grow your farm The role community plays in sustaining motivation and momentum How to scale incrementally while protecting profitability Click HERE and Let's Meet! About nine thousand tech workers in the Seattle area have lost their jobs in the past year. That could be nine thousand people competing for a shrinking pool of tech jobs. This year started off with the most layoffs we’ve seen in a January since the Great Recession, and the lowest hiring on record. Many companies are now citing artificial intelligence in their layoff announcements. On today's episode, where have all the laid off tech workers gone? 750 layoffs a day. No, that's not a typo — and it's not slowing down.Brett sits down with Steve Jaffe, marketing veteran and author of The Layoff Journey: From Dismissal to Discovery, to talk about what most career books completely skip: the emotional and psychological toll of losing a job — and why processing that first is the key to what comes next.Steve was laid off four times over a 30-year career. His first layoff took him years to recover from. His last one in 2023? Water off a duck's back. The difference? He finally understood what he was actually experiencing: grief. This one is for anyone who's been laid off, is worried about being laid off, or is watching colleagues get cut and wondering when it's their turn.In this episode:Why January 2026 had the highest single-month layoffs since 2009 — and why the job market isn't bouncing backHow layoffs became a business strategy instead of a last resort (and what that means for your career security)The stages of grief that apply to job loss — and why skipping them is costing people months of their job searchWhy the "myth of meritocracy" is one of the most dangerous things to believe in corporateThe identity crisis that hits when your job title is your identity — and how to separate the twoWhat Gen Z is getting right about corporate that older generations sacrificedSteve's pivot from laid-off marketing exec to published author — without a Plan B in place firstWhy having a side hustle isn't just a trend — it's now a survival strategyAbout Steve JaffeSteve spent 30 years in marketing and advertising — from West Coast ad agencies to in-house brand roles, including work on the iconic What Happens in Vegas Stays in Vegas campaign. After being laid off four times, he channeled those 10,000 hours of experience into his book, The Layoff Journey: From Dismissal to Discovery — a practical, grief-informed guide to navigating job loss without losing yourself in the process.Resources mentioned:
