The recent retrenchments at Agoda have stirred debate after clauses in its severance terms drew criticism from unions and the Ministry of Manpower. The saga highlights bigger questions facing workers in Singapore: What should employees expect in a layoff, what rights do they retain, and where are the boundaries of employer obligations? So how are severance agreements usually structured, what recourse exists if workers feel pressured, and should Singapore move towards stronger legal protections on retrenchment benefits? Ian Lim, Partner, TSMP Law Corporation and head of TSMP’s Employment & Labour team, joins the Breakfast Show to break down the legalities and what this means for both workers and employers.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

When host Jenny Dempsey got laid off back in 2022, she had no clue what I was doing. She was crying on her couch, trying to figure out who she even was without my job. No one hands you a guide for that kind of loss. It honestly felt like the ground fell out from under her.And then along comes Steve Jaffe. Turns out, he literally wrote the book I wish I had back then: The Layoff Journey: From Dismissal to Discovery.Steve's been through four layoffs (yes, four!) and instead of letting it crush him, he mapped out the stages of grief that come with job loss. Reading his book brought up so many of my own memories, everything from the shock and shame to that messy process of rebuilding your identity. It made me cry, it gave me hope, and it reminded me I'm not alone. In this conversation with Steve, we talk about:Why losing a job takes you through the grieving process. The awkward shame we carry after a layoff, and how to drop it.Why slowing down to process before jumping into the job hunt can change everythingThe “baggage” you might unknowingly carry into your next role. And what you need to hear if you just got laid off yesterday. This one hit so close to home for me, and if you've ever been laid off, or even just wondered who you are without your job, I think it'll resonate with you too.Connect with SteveGrab Steve's book The Layoff Journey on Amazon: The Layoff JourneyLearn more at: thestevejaffe.comFollow Steve on Instagram: @stevejaffethelayoffjourneyConnect with Steve on LinkedIn: Steve Jaffe on LinkedIn Thanks for tuning in to The Career Flipper! If this episode made you think, laugh, or feel a little braver about your own flip, do me a favor:

Title: The Power of Reinvention: From Laid Off to Lit Up with Karley StewartThis week on The Goode Guide, we're getting real about career curveballs, identity shifts, and what it means to reinvent yourself—not just professionally, but personally.I'm joined by the incredibly insightful and resilient Karley Stewart, a powerhouse leader whose career spans Nordstrom, Louis Vuitton, and Amazon. Carly and I first bonded over our shared corporate roots—rare in LA's sea of creatives—and today's conversation feels like chatting with a future version of myself. We cover it all: layoffs, leadership, letting go of old plans, and learning to love the pivots.Carly opens up about her unexpected layoff just two weeks after relocating to New York, the emotional unraveling that followed, and the clarity she gained from hitting pause and leaning into self-discovery. Her story is an empowering reminder that your job may be what you do, but it's not who you are—and that some of our biggest breakthroughs come wrapped in what first looks like breakdown. From LA to the Corporate Grind [2:24] Shanarra shares what it was like moving to LA and not finding many peers in traditional 9–5 roles—until she met Karley, who mirrored her own corporate path and ambition.Carly's Early Career + Dream of Shoe Entrepreneurship [6:03] Karley reflects on her early days in retail, her original dream of opening a shoe store, and how Nordstrom fast-tracked her leadership journey. The Three P's That Shaped Her Leadership Style [10:35]Karley introduces her “Three P's”—People, Passion, Product—and how they became the north star for her leadership philosophy. From Luxury to Tech: Transitioning to Amazon [15:12] We talk about the culture shock of moving from Louis Vuitton to Amazon and why her first role at Amazon didn't quite fit—but still taught her invaluable lessons.Boomerang Back: Why She Returned to Amazon [20:45] Karley shares what brought her back to Amazon and how working under two powerful women reignited her leadership confidence.Layoff in a New City: When the Plan Falls Apart [27:19] Just weeks after moving to NYC, Karley was laid off. She opens up about the emotional fallout, identity loss, and what it taught her about self-worth beyond titles.Rebuilding Through Reflection [33:31] From journaling to soul-searching, Karley walks us through the internal work she's done to reconnect with what she truly wants.Confidence and Curiosity: What She Wishes She Knew at 25 [39:12] Karley reflects on the advice she'd give her younger self—and why confidence and curiosity are the keys to long-term growth. The Power of Your Network [44:00] We talk about the importance of building strong relationships, especially when you're in transition—and why your network can often open more doors than your résumé.

Welcome to a special solo episode of The Career Flipper Podcast! It's the podcastaversary! One year ago, I hit publish on the very first episode of this show, having no idea what I was doing and definitely not realizing how much it would change my life. What started in the messy aftermath of a 2022 layoff (and 400+ job rejections) became a permission slip to rebuild, to reimagine success, and to start over without a map.In this episode, I share the behind-the-scenes of how this podcast came to be, how flipping furniture helped me flip my identity, and how conversations with guests like:Nick Musica, a former SEO guy turned animal psychicTrish Jasinski, who bought a chateau in the south of France and left corporate to open a retreat spaceCat Cheng, a former music teacher turned Netflix-featured baker (hi, tres leches dreams)And Case Sandberg, who I met at a farmer's market and learned had just left his software engineering job to become a chocolate maker…helped me feel less alone and more alive.Oh and I'm sharing a piece of my music. I wrote a song called Just Wait, about getting laid off, getting lost, and learning how to come back to yourself.Skip to 14:28 if you want to jump straight to the song.Whether you're in the middle of your own career flip, cocoon season, or identity unraveling, I hope this episode reminds you that you don't need permission from anyone else to change your life. You can give it to yourself.

Employment to age 65 used to be a given. If not a career run at the same company, non-profit, or government agency, a worker armed with a skillset and expertise honed over decades could be reasonably assured that the acquired knowledge remained marketable. Recently, that assumption has been turned on its head, especially in the technology sector. But there is also opportunity. Here are three stories about being laid off at 55+ and finding the “what's next.” Krista was a 25-year veteran in software management at a major healthcare insurance company. She was months away from eligibility for Medicare when her job was suddenly sent to India. Her “what's next” was a scramble for short-term health coverage. Mike was trained in User Experience (UX), attaining a master's degree in the field in 2004. After 18 years, he was laid off in his late 50s.  His “what's next”? Broaden his skill set, strategically update his resume, and pledge loyalty as he seeks his next employer.  Lee, at 71, brings a long history of career adaptation. He transitioned from sales to technical research and writing in his late 60s; he now works in AI content curation for a Global Top 10 tech corporation. Link Mike's Medium article:https://medium.com/crows-feet/i-may-never-find-a-full-time-job-again-one-year-update-e73fbc51af3fSupport the show
