POPULARITY
On today's edition of Flashback Friday's, we're going to be highlighting a record that came out in 2007. 2007 was an interesting year for music. I rejoined a band after spending two years not playing music or being in a band. I was 23 years old, still trying to figure out who I was. I think this particular year was kind of like the year 1995. I think the music landscape was changing a bit, especially within the scene. I think people were getting a little tired of sad and dark music with similar themes. People were craving something a little more upbeat, positive, and catchy. This shift resulted in pop punk and pop rock really having a resurgence. Bands like All Time Low, Boys Like Girls, Mayday Parade, The Maine, and A Day to Remember burst onto the scene. Many with very popular debut records. But I want to highlight a lesser-known band and album that came out in 2007. This is a bit of sad and dark record, too. Perhaps that's why people missed it. Even the title is a bit of a downer. The album I'm highlighting today is "Hiding Inside the Horrible Weather", the second full length from My American Heart. Hiding Inside the Horrible Weather is My American Heart's second and final album, released on June 26, 2007, by Warcon Records. The album was produced by James Paul Wisner, and the artwork was designed by Don Clark of Invisible Creature.[1] Two music videos for the album's single "The Shake (Awful Feeling)" were released. This was a band finding their sound and hitting their stride with their first fully realized album. The first album "The Meaning in Makeup" is fun and a good rock and roll album, but Hiding is them solidifying who they were as a band. I love the eclectic nature of the record. There's pop rock, there's aggressive rock songs, there are speakeasy sultry blues-esque songs, and there are subdued tracks. This record takes you on a journey. The lyrics are introspective and somewhat dark. The singer must have been finding himself throughout the journey of writing this songs and you can hear catharsis and longing in his words.
Before we start, feel free to support the podcast if you’ve been listening for a while by signing up for my Patreon for $1 and I will love you forever. Emanuel started out as "Emanuel Nice" in December 1998. They kept that moniker until 2004 where they decided to drop the Nice but keep the full line up while updating their sound which would get them signed to Vagrant Records. They released their first album, Soundtrack to a Headrush, in March 2005 on Vagrant and toured extensively with bands like Jimmy Eat World, Thirty Seconds to Mars, Aiden, Keating, From Autumn To Ashes, The Bled, My American Heart, Lorene Drive, Moneen, The Audition and many more. I reconnected with Mr. Matthew Breen, got him on the Skype, and this is what we talked about, Starting the band off as Emanuel “Nice” The Louisville music scene Their song Make Tonight Brian’s bass sound on the record Getting courted by records labels How they signed to Vagrant Their crazy sponsorships How their record getting leaked fucked them Their tour with the Suicide Girls How big did Vagrant think they were going to be The band Recover Black Earth Tiger Getting over addiction And a ton more Check out my new book The Couples' Checklist for my webcomic dailyBred. In this week's episode of Punk Goes Pod, Emma and Sam get a lesson in all things California... well, the cities *in* California, at least. They also discuss the early-2000s trend of dying one's hair pee-yellow; Sam runs through his exhaustive belt buckle collection; and the pair present a challenge to their listeners. Oh, and they also discuss 'California Love' by 2Pac and Dr Dre, as covered by My American Heart for Punk Goes Crunk.
Singer-songwriter Lilli Lewis is the embodiment of peace, love, joy, optimism, and selflessness through her life-practice of "radical decency." A classically trained musician, Lilli has now found a home in music that has been called “like listening to light” by actor and singer Mandy Patinkin. Her music is an eclectic mix of folk, blues, jazz, gospel, and soul. Based in New Orleans, Lewis has a band, The Lilli Lewis Project, and serves as VP and A&R Head at the Louisiana Red Hot Records record label. Lilli stopped by to take a deep dive into musical journey as well as her current projects and her new album My American Heart. We discuss her work in the last year with the Movement Voter Project, Folk Alliance International, and writing a song called "Mask Up! Covid Down!" to help encourage the people of New Orleans to wear their masks to help stop the spread of Covid-19. We also talk about navigating the music industry during a time of heightened conversations around cultural equity, race and social justice coupled with a global pandemic. In this episode I interview Larry Soliman (lead singer of My American Heart) we discuss his upbringing, My American Heart signing a record deal and touring.
Buzz Osborne is front man for legendary rock outfit, The Melvins. For the past 30 years, King Buzzo and company have consistently put out numerous records and toured incessantly all over the world. While Melvins have largely gone unrecognized by mainstream media and audiences for most of their career, it has never once bothered the underground icon. He prefers to play for his true, faithful audiences and make the music he wants to make while not catering to trends or desires of industry types. One of the most influential bands on the planet, it is hard to name any rival or peer group of The Melvins. Keith Rich is the drummer for breakout Des Moines sludge-metal collective, Druids. From a young age, Keith started jamming in bands all around central Iowa. He has played in many groups over the years and toured around the world with psychedelic rockers, Radio Moscow as well as San Diego pop punkers, My American Heart. While his past resume' is impressive, its these days in Druids that he is more dedicated than ever to create and explore his true potential behind the drum kit. If Druids remains focused turning out quality records and grinding as they have been, it is no doubt more success will come to fruition.
Eclectica Episode 7: Audible AnomaliesI've been sitting on this episode for a bit; trying to decide whether or not to publish it as-it was when I first "finished" it, on the night of its creation. Since my microphone woes have not quiiite yet been resolved (though a remedy is fast approaching on the horizon- with the help of UPS ;)), it occurred to me to try something new for a change, and put a little twist in the mix. What exactly? Well, I thought I might let my screen reader speak for me this time, as our temporary show announcer! ^_^ I thought it'd be something neat, new and unique, you know? But in the end, I decided to go with the advice of a more seasoned podcaster. Therefore, in lieu of letting Jorgan the Electronic Voice Announcer speak up for me (to save you all from having to bear with my cruddy microphone), I chose to re-produce it, w/my own (hopefully pleasing & endearingly oddball) voice. :)As for the rest of the show's content; a couple of weeks ago I got a "bee in my bonnet" to suddenly make an impromptu, relatively short podcast centered around all of these great bits of music that have not (as yet) fit into any particular show or theme on Eclectica. Therefore, they're the show's "anomalies" as it were. :) -This is NOT so say that these pieces or bands are weird or bizarre or freakish in any negative sense of the words. Not one bit. These artists & their music all rock considerably (otherwise, why the heck would I feature them here??). They are all just so good, their music could go just about anywhere. And thus, mehopes you see my problem. ;)But I'll let the music speak to you for itself. :)As always, if you have any thoughts or ideas you might like to relay to me regarding the show, I'd love to hear from you; my rockin' public. :D You can always feel free to contact me (via my new e-mail addy; djselchie@gmail.com) about programming, artists whom you might like to hear featured on Eclectica, etc., or for any other reason if you wish. And musicians, bands, recording artists etc. are (again, as per usual) most welcome to submit their music for potential use on the show. :)Aaaanyhoo..! All that being said, on to the music!!I truly hope you enjoy what you hear. ^_^Hugs to All,DJ SelchieTrack List1. Metro Station - California2. Shanghai Restoration Project - Preface3.
